The thing that I appreciate the most about Story of Minglan is how pro-active its female characters are. It’s not just a show meant to highlight the exploitation and vulnerability of women in the context of the Song Dynasty society (although we certainly get to witness that); but one that lets their fierceness and determination and agency shine. It’s so remarkable that the majority of the plots in the show are centred around women and resolved by women. Even when it comes to the case of antagonists like Lin Qinshuang, Xiao Qin-shi, Old Madam Wang, the empress dowager etc, they are imposing figures with complex motivations that contribute to all the important developments. When little Minglan gets orphaned, it’s Hualan’s advice to Wang Ruofu that appeases the Wei family and Old Madam Sheng who steps up to take Minglan under her wing when her own father wouldn’t. When Molan has an affair, it’s up to Wang Ruofu and Old Madam Sheng to take the initiative to speak to the Liang family about a possible marriage. When Gu Tingye proposes marriage to Yu Yanhong, it’s her mother the one who needs to give the final approval and in the end cuts him off. When Qi Heng gets threatened, again it’s Princess Consort Yong pulling the strings. Consort Rong decides to murder the Yong Family (the family of the prince about to inherit the nation, mind you) to get revenge for the rape and death of her younger sister. Shulan’s divorce is negotiated by her own mother and grandmother, and not her father. When Auntie Kang is killed, it’s Old Madam Wang the one going to imperial palace to scheme against Tingye. Minglan gives up on ever expecting her father to give her justice so she steps up and takes extreme measures to get revenge for her mother’s death, and her contribution is what helps Yanran, Shulan, Kang Zhao’er, Zhang Guifen, and finally Old Madam when she gets poisoned. Even Concubine Wei, who always insisted on keeping a low profile, was ready to go to the Kaifeng Court to prove Xiao Die's innocence (so you see where Minglan gets it from). And Lady Bai was ready to divorce her husband and walk away with her children after finding out how she was used. Even that small moment of Mingyue asking to have her family’s slave contracts returned to them so she can escape being forced to become a concubine to a man she doesn’t like is so satisfying to see. It’s just so great to get a show like that that’s not just trying to make a point about the suffering of women, but actually lets its female characters be active participants in their own stories and take control of their lives instead of being subservient to male character, or reducing them to the role of the love interest or a passive sufferer.

Synopsis :

Can a young man find his mother’s killer and return peace to the martial arts world?

Xiao Yan (Leo Wu) is a helpless 9-year-old when his mother is killed by evil enemies. Despite his best efforts, Xiao Yan’s martial arts abilities are not developing as his family had hoped. But all that changes when he accidentally summons the Medicine Lord, Yao Chen (Baron Chen), with his mother’s ring when he is 15. With the help of Yao Chen, Xiao Yan becomes a great martial artist who is intent on bringing his mother’s killer to justice.

With the loyal Xiao Xun'er (Lin Yun) by his side, can Xiao Yan defeat the evil forces and restore peace to the land?

“Fights Break Sphere” is a 2018 Chinese drama series directed by Yu Rong Guang. It is based on the novel Doupo Cangqiong by Tian Can Tu Dou, the author who also wrote the novel that the 2018 drama series “Martial Universe” is based on.

My thoughts on this drama :

Have you ever started a drama because you knew who participated in the OST? Well, I did, for Fight Break Sphere. I knew Hua Chen Yu had participated with Jackdaw Youth title, and I wanted to see what kind of scenes they put it on. It ended up being played only once in 45 episodes so count me disappointed. To be honest, I was pretty hooked for the 15 first episodes, but then, it began to slow down, it was always the same thing happening over and over again and became boring. I watched the final 10 episodes on 'very' fast forward. You know what shook me though? Xiao freakin' Zhan is part of the cast... How am I supposed to get over The Untamed if he's everywhere? His character, Lin Xiuya is pretty useless in the show (sorry darling) but he's a sight for sore eyes so I'll take it anyway. The main actor is young but very good at his job. However, almost all the other characters gravitating around him were bland, annoying even. I especially think about his cousin/adoptive sister Xun'Er, who's like the worst leech ever. She was that annoying little sister who's always screaming Xiao Yan Ge Ge like in kdrama with their cringeworthy 'Oppa!" Urgh... She is one of the reasons I rated it so low. The others being major plot holes and inconsistencies.

Xiao Shunyao is a Chinese actor , singer, dancer and Gen 1 Idol (member of the band M.I.C , full. Made In China) and Model.

As an ACTOR : He has remarkable acting history and mentionable performance as Di Feisheng in Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Sima Shi in Advisor's Alliance, Rong Ning code named "Eagle" in 8848 , Tantai Minglang in Till The End Of The Moon. Other than this his other works are : Falling Down 2, The Locked Room, People's Policeman Lao Lin , The Blue Whisper , Strength to fly, Legend of Awakening and Where the lost ones go.

There are few upcoming expected dramas where Xiao Shunyao's brilliance in acting is once again being anticipated. One being 'Shui Long Yin' where he plays 'Shen Langhun' and 'Hero Legends' where he plays 'Qin Zhonghai'.

As a SINGER : His versatile voice facilitates playing around with different musical genres fluently such as Rap, Rock, Opera and Pop. (Give his music a go and you'll realise). Including his Idol group songs, which are about at least a decade old at this point and his recent solo albums and singles, he has kept his musical journey continuous throughout the years.

He is a talent worth checking out about!

Some of his excellent songs that are worth mentioning are - 山 (Shan) , 繁华 (Fan hua or Prosperity) , Never Stop, 我和我自己 (Me and Myself), To My Own Road etc.

Bonus point : HE IS HOT, Funny and Adorable.
