Turin headcanons go

OKAY. this got long so im putting it under a cut lmao

so firstly, i headcanon for him that despite coming from a mannish household for the first half of his childhood, and his father having a beard (presumably) that after spending all of his adolescence with elves, once he starts growing his beard he’s EXTREMELY self-conscious. like he feels different and othered enough, he doesn’t want to be reminded about how he doesnt belong, and more than that he doesnt want to be considered gross or ugly.

so he shaves consistently and what at times maybe obsessively? im sure being a greasy teenage human boy did GREAT things for his self esteem when he was surrounded by timeless, flawless, beautiful elves.

after he has wandered in the wilderness for a while after his exile, he sees his reflection in some water and is like “oh jesus” because he’s never actually seen his face with a beard. its unsettling and he feels, kind of ugly, to be frank. but he left in such a rush, he has little more than his sword on him to even try shaving. so he doesnt.

and then he gets the idea that he is growing it specifically to rebel towards the elvish ideal. he left that all behind him, he no longer adheres to their standards. his beard PROVES he is a man.

maybe when he meets the guarwaith he shaves once or twice during that time, or at least trims. just to keep neat. but when beleg comes? that night he shaves. he doesnt even think about it, he just does it. because he doesnt want beleg to think of him as any more of a wild man than he already has made himself appear. (and maybe because he doesn’t want beleg to find him unattractive, but he wouldnt say that)

he shaves every day until beleg leaves, and then again, stops shaving. maybe he continues for like a week or so after because he had gotten so back into the habit but then he’s like. wait why am i bothering with this? why did i do this in the first place?

by the time he sees beleg again he’s got a thick winter beard that he’s let grow without trimming longer than ever. again, that night he shaves. and he shaves every day until the siege of amon rudh, and then after he’s rescued, after beleg’s death, he never shaves again.

PART 2

i also have some similar, stupidly complex headcanons about his hair.

So the length of it, while living in doriath on the marches, is probably around shoulder length. think movie aragorn. long enough to pull back and keep out of his face with ease, but short enough that it doesnt require too much maintenance. except that he doesnt maintain it Literally At All. he forgets, maybe, that he does not have the silky seemingly untangle-able hair that beleg and the other wardens have. if he pulls a comb through it and it gets stuck, then oh well its time for his trim.

its not that he doesnt care about his appearance, but like. he’s got morwen’s thick waves, and even beleg has to take his time and work through it for him sometimes. its just hard. shaving is easy, keeping his hair brushed is a hassle. he’s never had someone with hair like his to teach him how to take care of it, since when he left his mother it was far shorter and she always combed and washed his hair. he cant decide if having a borderline rat’s nest or just shaving his whole head would be uglier. 

but after saeros. after his exile. he takes his time every single morning to carefully comb through, and wet it if he can. he takes excellent care of it. Not because saeros made him feel bad or ugly necessarily, but because turin is a creature of pure fucking spite and just wants to prove that “oh yeah? you think im wild? i will Prove You Wrong.”

and he lets it grow! by the time he and beleg are living together on amon rudh it comes nearly down to the middle of his back after two years of growth. and its beautiful, and beleg loves coming his hair for him now more than ever, and does it sometimes just to savor the feeling of the comb being able to glide through without a single snag. beleg thinks maybe its the only good thing to have ever come of his stubbornness.

aftrer beleg’s death, he stops taking care of it. he hasn’t even attempted to take a comb to it in weeks, and gwindor actually has to end up cutting it because it’s so tangled. when he sees himself in the pools of Ivrin, his hair shorn and with a beard for the first time in months, he doesn’t like what he sees. this is someone different.

he grows his hair out again, though. by his time in brethil he has settled into a distinct look of long haired and thick bearded. maybe he never lets it get too long, probably between his shoulder blades. 

anyway those are my big headcanons that are stupidly complex for just being literally about his hair..... thanks for listening to me ramble folks

Then i fell for my frenemy my senior year, but he neber knew and it was just a phase for me I guess it didnt last long
