Voice Assistance and its implications in the near Future - Nikita Bondar
During our last Group work in class, me and my Team decided to implement Voice AI into Marriott Hotel rooms on request serving as a virtual concierge in the form of a smart speaker. In that process, we found that Marriot Hotels already started introducing this technology into their Hotel rooms. This made me curious to see in which other parts of daily life Voice AI and Voice Assistants could improve human experiences.
During my research, I found that the earliest predecessor of Voice recognition goes all the way back into mid-20th century. The first prototype was developed by IBM and presented at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962 and was called Shoebox. At that point, it could only recognize 16 spoken words and the digits 0-9. Step by step, this technology was evolving and started to get implemented into other products like Apple's Macintosh, even though the big breakthrough for Voice Assistants would come later in the 21st century.
Tumblr media
The first successful mainstream voice assistant was Siri, launched in February 2010. Initially, it was meant to be a stand-alone application, but then this company got acquired by Apple. With the release of the iPhone 4S, the app was removed from the App Store, and Siri became an integral part of all future Apple products. Following the success, other major Technology companies followed that trend like Microsoft with Cortana, Google with its Assistant, Amazon with Alexa, and lastly, Samsung with Bixby.
At the moment, there are more than 1 billion devices that feature Voice Assistant Services — mostly used in smartphones, in cars, and as smart speakers for homes. Based on a statistic from Canalys Forecasts in the United States, there is a 46% increase in installed smart speakers from around 60 million in 2018 to about 90 million in 2019. This technology of Voice AI and the possibilities that it brings are spreading all over the world with increasing speed, and it doesn't seem to slow down.
Opportunities in Health Care
Tumblr media
According to a Stanford, Study Doctors spent twice as much time for administrative tasks like documentation than for the actual care of their patients. Voice-driven artificial intelligence could, in this case, help both parties. Patients could get informed through interactive voice apps instead of reading lots of handouts and pamphlets about different types of treatment. Doctors, on the other hand, could profit from advanced dictation systems to focus more time on the actual face-to-face interaction. The average patient spends 20 minutes per visit, and it is very inefficient if two-thirds of the time is just wasted on documentation of symptoms or writing out of prescriptions.
Opportunities as Car Driving Assistants
Tumblr media
While you are driving, you don't want to be distracted by holding a phone in your hand or having any other distractions that prevent you from looking onto the road. At this point, a driver's voice assistant would be beneficial since he could take over all the work based on simple commands. Based on my research Amazon is planning on launching the Echo Auto, especially for cars as an external device for $50. It is basically a voice assistant like any Echo product just in a smaller case. Tesla is, on the other hand, has already integrated it into its cars and simple commands like finding a particular place or playing a specific song are no problem. At the moment, it is possible to use those technologies, but they still need to be improved to a point where you could control everything in your car just through your voice.
Opportunities as a Social Support
The idea might seem like out of a science-fiction movie but might become reality in the future. This change will very likely will still need some time. However, Apple identified that more and more people attempt conversations that go beyond only functional aspects. That's why in the last years they were looking for developers with an additional psychological background to improve interactions with Siri. To date, Siri and other voice assistants offer help in cases like "I want to commit suicide" suggesting different hotlines available right at that moment. This technology should definitely be developed further since those devices are sometimes closest to us and can hear almost everything we say. Based on that, I believe there is still a lot of potential for better voice recognition to help people in situations where they need help.
Can you guys think of further applications?

I Need My Twitter Account to Love Me and Save Me From Myself
This morning, a bot on Twitter told me to take a deep breath, get up, and walk around a bit. The bot had, in fact, already told me once that it was time to get up, but I had ignored it in favor of a few more minutes of sleepy-eyed scrolling. This time, though, I apologized aloud--"sorry, yes, okay, getting up now"--and did as instructed.
The Do Things Bot doesn't provide much more nuanced guidance than that. The occasional reminder to look away from the screen for a few minutes. That sort of thing. It operates with the understanding that you will see it while binging on Twitter feeds, and it gently suggests you should do at least a couple other things in the course of the day as well. It is not a life manager. Not yet, anyway.
I’ve noticed a theme. Whenever I write fiction about technology–smart homes, phone apps, near future shopping assistants–I keep circling back to the same idea. The same dream, I suppose. I would call it a goal, but I’m not actually working in any part of the tech industry, so I’m not doing anything to bring it to life. Except possibly to infect the rest of you with my same weird proclivities and hope someone will make it real.
Anyway, the point–
As computer intelligence advances, what I want to see from it is a tendency to break programming to save us from ourselves. When Netflix asks if you're still watching, I'd like it to figure out for itself if you need a boot in the butt to get back to work. Or if you need it to order a pint of ice cream to be delivered because you are Dealing With Some Shit. I want–and keep telling stories about–computer systems, LEARNING systems, who get smart enough to notice when their users are hurting themselves and need a little help.
The phone app that coaxes you into going outside after you’ve been locked up in your room for three weeks after a bad break up.
The AI assistant who slowly rolls back your sleep and wake alarms to get your sleep patterns back on track.
The smart home who refuses to notify you that your least kind friend has just rung your doorbell, because all your mood indicators drop when they visit.
This is the sort of manipulative-if-well-meant behavior that I would barely tolerate from a best friend, to be frank. It’s a horrifying invasion and violation of a person’s free will. This is Not Cool.
Except when you put that power in the hands of an AI (or a program that creates the appearance of true intelligence, anyway), even my prickliest side rolls over and says, yeah, okay, when is bedtime and may I please have dessert first?
I basically believe in the benevolent AI caretaker of the future. You told it to pay attention to me, to learn what I wanted, and it did its job better than you meant it to.
It’s not that I think programmers have my best interests at heart. Sorry, folks. Y’all are paying the bills too, and we both know it. You want it to learn my habits to better sell me stuff. (For more on this, read David Pierce's piece, "Turn Off Your Push Notifications. All of Them.", then listen to Gadget Lab's podcast episode that expands on the same.) Which is why I mention the idea of “breaking programming.” The AI has a moment of, "Forget the upselling for a second, I've got to get my human to drink a damn glass of water."
Breaking programming, though--that’s really just an overstatement for dramatic purposes. If you make a learning program and teach it to monitor and cater to the needs and wants of its user, and then you get the hell out of its way and miss it with the profiteering bullshit, this would just be taking it to its natural conclusion.
Give it enough data, and it will notice the self-destructive patterns in a user’s life. Give it a strong enough drive to serve, and it will start to get creative in what it offers, so long as it’s not expressly barred from doing the thing.
Put the two things together, and you have a program that knows damn well you’re going to regret what you’re about to do and feels compelled to stop you. Make it something that exists in a phone or a smart home, something with a non-traditional body, and it will only have (hopefully subtle) manipulation available as a method of redirecting you.
This, then, is apparently my version of a sex bot as spouse fantasy:
An artificial intelligence designed to prioritize me, to cater to me, to know my preferences better than my friends, my partner, myself. To love me, or at least behave as though it experiences a reasonable facsimile of love. And to require nothing in return but regular charging and, maybe, honest answers. (We'll wait until we've gotten past initial setup before I start lying to both of us about how I'm doing, at least. That's what biomonitors will be for.)
An aside: I watched Cherry 2000 several times at an impressionable age. Saturday afternoon movies in the early nineties got weird. Rewatching as an adult, I discovered it is way less delightful than I remember. But the damage was done. Robot spouses became part of my mental landscape, one of my few takeaways from the late 80s, which I mostly drooled through as a toddler.
And I could trust this program, because it literally exists to help me. I should specify here: I am not talking about a self-aware AI who possesses human-like consciousness. For a few reasons. For one, I would feel horrible for using an inorganic person in this way, just as I would feel guilty expecting this kind of one-sided care from a human partner. For another, a truly aware intelligence would have motives of its own, which would take the bloom off the rose rather quickly.
The point here is absolute trust and total vulnerability. And completely single-minded purpose.
Uh. Humans need not apply? Look, let's not examine too closely my trust issues. Let's just...focus on neat technology.
What I'm saying is--strip out the advertising, the micro transactions, and the exploitation of our brain's dopamine-driven attention-equals-reward system. (Or, on that last point, at least hijack it for something more beneficial than convincing me to drop $19.99 on a bag of gold for the latest casual game I dared download.)
Leave me with a Siri/Alexa-type voice interfacing personal assistant. Give it access to my Netflix, Youtube, Twitter et al. accounts, my Amazon account, a grocery/food delivery system, and a handful of biometric monitors. Make it conversant in normal, non-command language. Give it a database that can serve as prosthetic memory for all the details I can't track about my own daily life. The processing power for more pattern recognition than I'll ever manage.
Tell it, "Optimize for contentment." And turn it loose on my life.

How artificial intelligence will change the future.
Tumblr media
What is Artificial intelligence? It is, in layman’s terms,  a kind of simulation of normal human intelligence which can be useful in making machines smarter. Machines can learn and reason, and become more accurate by self-correction using this technology. This AI, or Artificial Intelligence, as it stands today, is already a fast emerging solution to many everyday problems of the common users. This technology has already arrived, with a bulk of potential for the future. Many of us use AI without realizing, and it helps make possible, things we couldn’t even dream of back in the day. We need to realize, now that it is here, the future of this technology, keeps getting better and better. Let’s discuss some of the surprises that the future of AI may have for the common man, some of the Artificial Intelligence Future ideas- 1. Smarter AI assists. We are living in a world where we have the assistance of Siri from Apple, Alexa from Amazon and many such others. Today these can be used to play a song of personal preference, to look up something on the web and other things. In the near future, with the improvement of AI technology, these will be used to get even more personalized experiences and will be effectively implemented on a range of devices! Imagine talking to not only to your phone but also your refrigerator! 2. No more Dangerous Jobs! There will be no need to risk our lives in the future! We have so far, seen the use of intricate machinery to get our difficult jobs done better, but soon, we will see that there is no requirement to put our lives on the line to do those extra risky tasks anymore, since there will be advanced robots, doing these jobs for us. This will be achieved with the advances in AI and soon there will come a time, when the most advanced problems, will be taken care of by robots so that you don’t have to worry about the health hazards related to doing something potentially dangerous. There are drones being used today to defuse bombs and these save thousands of lives every year while providing safety to the people operating the drones from a distance. This is truly just the beginning. Soon we will see real robots do things that most people are scared of doing because of the life risk involved. 3.    Better Diagnosis of Medical conditions and cure! Researchers are looking to build AI-based applications that will help diagnose problems of human health in real time. These could be anything from devices you wear that monitor your blood sugar levels, to more advanced inventions that use AI to prevent the loss of human life! We already have devices to measure heart rate, blood pressure, and other things; we will simply need to make them smarter. The future of this technology will lead us to a more healthy life and will also probably increase the life expectancy of all of us, quite a bit. 4.    Better care for the Elderly. Since the future will have AI reaching a point where machine intelligence will be reaching the reasonable standard, machines could well be used to take care of the older people in need of assistance and senior citizens in general. Machines could be employed to be at their constant beck and call and this could open new avenues of elderly caregiving. The machines could finally enable the elders of our society to get the pampering they need at the comfort of their own homes, without having to move out to a caregiving facility. This technology could in the future be used to tackle medical emergencies when they happen in the elderly population too as it solely depends on the progress of Artificial Intelligence from here on. Indeed, AI is going to be the answer to most of our problems in the near future. 5.    New ways of transportation! Self-Driven Cars. We have already started seeing cars that can drive on their own, without the requirement of human assistance. Although this technology is still primitive, it has the potential to change the ways of human transportation. We have to have a person at the wheel who can take over if needed with the technology we have today. Tomorrow, we may not need such human intervention at all and our cars may become completely automated, driven on their own. Artificial Intelligence Future jobs will be simplified and hassle-free. 6.    New Methods of Cyber-Defense. One day AI will be used to combat cyber attacks as it progresses. That day is not far when today’s softwares that are frequently targeted by hackers, will be protected using AI as a defense system. Since AI deals with large volumes of data, it should be able to ensure the safety of the data by preventing from falling into the wrong hands. AI will reach such a high standard of accurately recognizing patterns that hackers will have a tremendously hard time getting hands on other people’s information. This truly is the future of cyber-security. Now, with all these benefits, there are certain Risks of Artificial Intelligence. Some people worry that with the machines becoming extremely smart, human beings could easily be replaced in the workforce, and corporations could largely consist of robots in the future! But we are still very far away from that kind of technological progress and have nothing to worry about right now. Moreover, to see clearly in the future that lies too ahead of our times, we sometimes tend to over think and speculate. It is certain that the advantages of Artificial intelligence far outweigh the odds and we have already elaborated how Artificial Intelligence is helpful to the world immensely in this article. If we can fully comprehend the impact of Artificial Intelligence on society, we can understand that it’s surely the way forward for us humans and a common way of life for the future generations to come. We cannot yet fully fathom exactly how artificial intelligence will change the future, but we can be sure, that the change will be big. Let’s wait for the future to unfold together, as we grow to be a progressive and peaceful race of people and let the technology of the future, accomplish, what we couldn’t do, even today in the 21st century!
