For those seeking profound healing and growth, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who is also a Certified Hakomi Therapist (CHT) offers a unique and holistic approach to psychotherapy. Here are 14 compelling reasons to consider such a professional for your therapeutic needs.
1. Expertise in Psychotherapy and Counseling

Relationships are complex and often require professional guidance to navigate challenges. An LPC skilled in marriage counseling can help couples improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their emotional connection. This service is invaluable for couples seeking to build a healthier and more fulfilling relationship.

By integrating mindfulness and somatic awareness, they help couples identify and shift ingrained patterns that hinder their relationship. This method promotes deeper emotional intimacy and understanding between partners.
4. Innovative Ketamine Therapy
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine therapy is an emerging treatment for severe depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues. LPCs who offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy have specialized training to safely administer and monitor this treatment. Ketamine can facilitate rapid and profound changes in mood and perception, providing relief where traditional therapies may have fallen short.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is the difference between a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Certified Hakomi Therapist (CHT)?
Answer: A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is a mental health professional who has met the licensing requirements set by their state, which typically includes a master’s degree in counseling, supervised clinical experience, and passing a licensing exam. LPCs are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of mental health issues.
A Certified Hakomi Therapist (CHT), on the other hand, specializes in the Hakomi Method, a mindfulness-centered somatic approach to therapy. This certification involves extensive training in techniques that integrate mindfulness and body awareness to uncover and heal deep-seated issues. Combining these two qualifications, a professional can offer a unique, holistic approach to mental health care.
2. How does Hakomi Therapy work?
Answer: Hakomi Therapy is a mindfulness-based somatic psychotherapy that helps clients become aware of their body’s sensations and emotions. It involves creating a safe and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their inner experiences. Through mindfulness, clients can access unconscious patterns and beliefs, which are then gently processed and integrated. This approach allows for deep healing and personal growth by addressing the root causes of emotional and behavioral issues.
3. What issues can be addressed with Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
Answer: Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) has shown effectiveness in treating a variety of mental health issues, including severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, and treatment-resistant conditions. Ketamine can facilitate rapid changes in mood and perception, providing relief where traditional therapies may not have been effective. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who have not responded well to other forms of treatment.
4. What is Psychedelic Integration Therapy, and who is it for?
Answer: Psychedelic Integration Therapy is designed to help individuals make sense of and integrate their psychedelic experiences into their everyday lives. This type of therapy is beneficial for those who have used psychedelics recreationally or in a therapeutic setting and need support to process their experiences. Integration therapy ensures that the insights gained from psychedelic experiences contribute positively to one's mental health and overall well-being.
5. What can I expect during an individual therapy session?
Answer: During an individual therapy session, you can expect to work collaboratively with your therapist to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Sessions typically involve talking about your current issues, setting goals, and developing strategies to address them. If you are working with a Certified Hakomi Therapist, the session may also include mindfulness exercises and somatic techniques to help you become more aware of your body’s sensations and emotions. This holistic approach can lead to deeper insights and more effective healing.
6. How does couples therapy differ from individual therapy?
Answer: Couples therapy focuses on the dynamics between partners and aims to improve the relationship as a whole. It involves addressing issues such as communication, conflict resolution, emotional intimacy, and relationship patterns. That's because in western culture, there's a strong imprint about what the holidays should and should not look like, Merryl Rothaus, LPC, a licensed professional counselor and board-certified art therapist in Boulder, Colorado, who specializes in grief, loss, and trauma, tells Health. "We're conditioned to believe this season should be happy, cozy, and joyful. So if we're not feeling these things, we tend to think, There must be something wrong with me. And that tends to make grief feel even stronger." This type of thinking can also result in a cascade of shame and lead to isolation, adds Rothaus, as well as other mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety.
///
Holidays have always been rough for anyone feeling lonely or stuck. Myself included. It’s tough seeing the same things as others, and we must try to be as helpful as we can to make them remember the holidays with warmth. Nothing is guaranteed in this world, and it us up to us to check up on others.

Denver is full of gorgeous, fit, adventurous adults having lots of sex. But is it always good sex? That’s debatable. We can say with authority, however, that when it comes to making love there’s always room to improve. Fortunately, our city is home to a growing sex-positive community. We asked them to explain—often in NSFW detail—how our sex culture is evolving, and how we can learn more about a natural act few of us are naturally good at.
Let’s Talk About Sex
It’s true that Denver’s attitude toward lovemaking is trending progressive, but creating an erotic utopia requires more than just flirting with the spectrum of human sexuality.

It was 2015, and sex was making headlines nationally. There was the Ashley Madison hack. Former NBA star—and Kardashian by marriage—Lamar Odom collapsed in a Nevada brothel. And Ben Affleck was allegedly sleeping with the nanny. Here in Denver, the local reportage was similarly scintillating; however, the narrative skewed less Hollywood scandal and more romantic comedy. According to two studies published that year, the Mile High City was among the five most sex-crazed towns in the country. Both surveys based their rankings largely on the number of condoms sold, and considering locals’ aversion to safe sex, one can deduce that the amount of fooling around occurring within city limits may have been even greater than statistics suggested.
Despite recent reports that say American teenagers and young adults are having less sex than they once did, there’s little reason to believe Denver’s sexual appetite has declined dramatically over the past four years—not with a steady stream of Tinder-equipped transplants pouring into the city. But just because we’re getting busy regularly doesn’t mean everybody’s getting exactly what they desire. “There’s not a lot of good sex happening,” says Tory Johnson, who co-owns Awakening Boutique, a sex shop in RiNo. “Women come in all the time and tell us they’re experiencing difficulties having an orgasm.”
Issues in the bedroom, of course, are not unique to Colorado. “Our culture gives us ridiculous expectations,” says Laura Deitsch, licensed clinical professional counselor and resident sexologist for Vibrant, a Denver-based sex toy company. “Porn, religion, politics, body image—we’re set up to fail.” Beyond the shame that’s often associated with sex, there’s a fundamental lack of knowledge about the act itself. In high school health class, we get the basics of reproductive biology without being taught that sex can be (gasp!) pleasurable. “When you learn how to drive, you learn how to turn right and you learn how to turn left,” says Angela Wells, Vibrant’s founder. “When you take sex ed…you only learn how to turn right; how much more of the world are you going to miss because you didn’t learn how to turn left?”
If local sexperts are correct, quite a lot. Which is why a resident cadre of sexual guides is eager to lead you to new destinations—and, perhaps, new heights of delight. From swingers to BDSM (that’s bondage, dominance, sadism, and masochism) devotees, Denver has long been home to a passionate, albeit small, community of kinksters. Recently, though, a sexual awakening has begun to spread though the city, with established kink groups seeing their ranks swell and new organizations—including female-oriented sex shops, an erotica production company, a bondage-focused studio, and a wealth of titillating seminars and workshops—popping up around town over the past half-decade or so. Our goal is to introduce you to many of them, not in order to transform Denver into a den of dommes and polys, but to do away with stereotypes, eliminate misconceptions, promote candid dialogue, and engender “sex-positivity”: the idea of being open to and accepting of all sexual proclivities. “The more a person moves toward sex-positivity,” says Jenni Skyler, a certified sex therapist at the Intimacy Institutein Boulder, “the healthier their sex life.” We don’t expect everyone will be wooed by all of the options increasingly available in Denver. However, having an open mind might just help you boost your intimate moments—so you never have to choose between quantity and quality.

‘There are some camps that are more than prepared to do this:’ Will kids across America have to cancel camp this summer?
This summer, camps could be scrapping color wars, ditching field trips and reducing the number of kids sleeping in each bunk.
That is, if camp is even happening this summer.
The coronavirus outbreak has already shuttered this summer’s Olympics, various concerts, Fourth of July events and New York City’s public pools. Many Americans are calling off their vacation plans too. Almost half (48%) of consumers say they’re cancelling their summer plans, according to a 1,201-person survey.
So will day camps and sleep-away camps join the growing list of cancellations?
That’s something millions of cooped-up kids and parents want to know — not to mention the members of a camping industry that’s worth approximately $18 billion, according to the American Camp Association, a trade group for the nation’s camps.
“Camp, right now, is truly very much up in the air,” said Ron Hall, executive director of Maine Summer Camps, a professional organization for more than 140 camps in the state.
“ Some modifications could include fewer kids per bunk and requirements that specialists wipe down and sanitize equipment between periods. ”
As the coronavirus pandemic shuts down businesses across the country and infectious-diseases experts weigh the likelihood of a second wave in the fall, parents and camp counselors are waiting for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to offer guidance on when and how it will be safe to return to group activities like camp, where kids and adult staff are often in close quarters.
The federal public-health agency’s guidance is important because many state and local health authorities, which issue camps’ operating licenses, take their cues from what the CDC says, Hall explained.
In the meantime, many Maine camps are planning for three scenarios, Hall said. The first is a normal summer, the second is a shortened season and the third is closing down for the 2020 summer.
Some camps are weighing how they can incorporate social-distancing tactics into the experience, he said. Other possibilities are nixing inter-camp competitions, calling off field trips and avoiding all-camp gatherings. It could also mean fewer kids in bunks and fewer people in the dining hall at any one time, Hall said.
Don’t miss:This is what air travel could look like in a post-coronavirus world
“There are some camps that are more than prepared to do this, and other camps where it would be very difficult,” Hall said, citing maintenance costs and facilities.
Joey and Lori Waldman, the owners and directors of Camp Blue Ridge, a sleep away camp in Clayton, Ga., are also drawing up contingency plans and grappling with the same questions of what social distance camping looks like.
Some modifications this year could include fewer kids per bunk and requirements that specialists wipe down and sanitize equipment between periods, Joey Waldman said. Field trips would be off the table and staff would have to stay on-site, even when they are off duty, he added. The camp has 250 acres, so that’s a lot of space for campers and staff to spread out, he noted.
“ ‘If we don’t feel it’s safe, we have to commit to what we feel is right.’ ”
— Joey Waldman, co-owner and director of Camp Blue Ridge
Waldman’s state is in the center of the reopening-the-economy debate, as Georgia Governor Brian Kemp tries to get the state’s economy back up running soon. He is planning on creating hand-washing stations, replete with hand sanitizer and, instead of meals being buffet style, one staffer would bring over a camp group’s food.
Kemp is allowing gyms, hair salons and bowling alleys to get back to business on Friday, so long as they follow certain requirements. Movie theaters can start selling tickets and restaurants can go to limited dining as of Monday under the timetable. Some critics, however, say that’s too soon and will lead to a rise in more COVID-19 infections and fatalities.
For now, Waldman’s getting ready to open up, but prepared to close if he thinks it’s ultimately the best idea. “If we don’t feel it’s safe, we have to commit to what we feel is right,” he said. If the camp, a family business for five decades, closed for the summer, Waldman said it would be tough but, “we would make due.”
‘An endless list of things’
It’s been a tough spring for many students. There are 50.8 million public-school students and another 5.8 million private-school students, according to the Department of Education.
Almost 40 states have closed their physical schools to slow the spread of COVID-19 and that’s affected 40.7 million public students, according to Education Week, a media outlet focused on education matters. The camping industry serves approximately 20 million kids, according to the American Camp Association, a non-profit professional association offering camp accreditation.
“ ‘These kids have been isolated socially, educationally.’ ”
— Ron Hall, executive director of Maine Summer Camps, a professional organization for more than 140 camps in the state.
“These kids have been isolated socially, educationally,” Hall said. “Now, more than previous years” camp could be a valuable bridge between “where we are now and where their lives are normally in the fall.”
Furthermore, many camps have big financial pressure to make this season happen, Hall noted. “If camps can’t open, there will be Maine camps that cannot survive unless there really good financial support from the state and federal government.” Maine camps generate $220 million annually in direct and indirect support for the state’s economy, between employment, construction, restaurants and insurance fees, he noted.
Yet camps everywhere have to balance all those concerns with ensuring a place that’s safe for kids and staff, Hall emphasized.
There are all sorts of open questions now, Hall said, from the big picture to details like how often to wipe down bathrooms and water fountains. “It’s an endless list of things that need be considered.”
That list could end up costing camps more money if they have to build more bunks and hire more staff to supervise smaller groups. So will more camp expenses equal bigger costs for families?
“The camps I talked to are saying if there are additional expenses, they are not going to increase tuitions,” said Hall. Tuitions for the camps in Hall’s group range from $200 a week to $15,000 for the summer. Camps would give pro-rated refunds for shortened sessions, he said.
“The big unknown” is what testing requirements will be, and whether camps will have to foot the bill, Hall noted.
Five weeks at Camp Blue Ridge costs $5,900 and seven weeks cost $7,900. If the camp had to shorten its season, Waldman said he would either reimburse tuition on a pro-rated basis, or apply the remainder to next season. If he had to pay for more supplies and staff to meet new guidelines this summer, Waldman said he would not pass that price onto parents.
“ Camps are working on their contingency plans as they wait for more information from the CDC and other public-health authorities. ”
The CDC is still working on guidance “specific to where people live, work, learn, pray and play in order to help communities ‘reopen’ as safely as possible during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic,” a spokeswoman said.
Camps are working on their contingency plans as they wait for more information from the CDC and other public-health authorities, the American Camp Association said in a statement. “We expect to have more information to share by early May regarding the future status of camp operations,” it said.
Some camps aren’t waiting on public health officials.
Stuart Jones, the owner and director of Outpost Summer Camps, a San Diego, Calif. day camp, announced earlier this month his camp would be skipping the 2020 season.
Families could get their money back, donate the money to a fund for campers who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend or apply the money to the 2021 season. One-third chose to either donate it to the fund or apply the deposit to next summer, he said.
“ ‘We feel it’s more responsible for our camp, the way we run our camp, to close for the season.’ ”
— Stuart Jones, president of Outpost Summer Camps in San Diego, Calif.
“We feel it’s more responsible for our camp, the way we run our camp, to close for the season,” he told MarketWatch. The camp, which usually serves 1,500 kids, was “the opposite of social distancing,” Outpost Summer Camps said on its website.
Tommy Feldman, the founder and director of the 135-acre Camp Granite Lake near Boulder, Colo., announced the camp’s 2020 closure earlier this week.
He obtained a small business loan through the $2 trillion stimulus bill, and after that, he’ll skip his salary for a year and his staff will take a one-third pay cut. But the decision was “straightforward” considering the risk, Feldman said.
“I think the families that really want us to run are going to forgive us for cancelling. But the families that don’t want us to run would never forgive us,” he added.
Back in Georgia, Waldman said he understands the decisions other camps are making. “We’re not at that phase. We want to plot the course,” he said.

With experience, they will offer concrete guidance and a wider range of solutions. These solutions have been tested and proven to work in situations similar to what you are facing. It is therefore a guarantee for quality service. Find a coach who is accessible on demand. There are moments when you make a request to see a counselor but none is available because they are too busy. You need someone who can find time for you in real time or through the phone and such other communication channels. When you are given an appointment, it should be honored. A referral makes it easier, faster and more certain to get a coach. This is because the services offered by such a coach have already been tested. You do not have to vet several coaches in an attempt to find the right one. It is the best approach when you have to make a quick professional decision. The most reliable referrals come from friends, relatives, family members and mentors who have used these services in the past. How much will you be required to pay for coaching? One might argue that you will get immense benefits but the services should be both affordable and reasonable. Once you have identified several professionals who can deliver the best services, you can turn to their cost. Choose one who offers the best value based on the details of the package. Choose one who understands your desired achievements in life. Coaches also act as mentors. It helps to hire a professional who has walked the talk. It means that you can draw from his or her experience to understand your own work environment. He or she will not be giving you theories but practical experience of what he has achieved. Choose a person who inspires confidence through his or her achievements.

This Program Wants to Teach Your Doctor About Cannabis
Rae Lland of Leafly Reports:
“Our philosophy is that cannabis is a tool, one of many healing tools. It should be part and parcel of an overall treatment plan,” says Donna Shields, co-founder of the Holistic Cannabis Academy in Boulder, Colorado.
The HCA, an educational program on medical cannabis for practitioners, was developed by Shields and co-founder Laura Lagano—both registered dietician nutritionists. Continued education is expected, even required of healthcare professionals; but, when it came to medical cannabis, programs simply didn’t exist to fill that important space. When Shields realized that her colleagues knew little to nothing about cannabis, she saw it as an opportunity.
Cannabis, Synergy, and Whole Body Health
With a belief that cannabis (and all medical treatments) should be viewed through a larger lens, importance is given to the “whole body system” and how, physically, everything is related. With personal support for the “synergistic” effect in treatment care, Shields considers integrating cannabis with various modalities of healthcare, such as a good nutrition plan, acupuncture, aromatherapy, meditation, and yoga, as an important facet to healing.
“Cannabis is a tool, one of many healing tools. It should be part and parcel of an overall treatment plan.”
Donna Shields, Co-founder of HCA
“You don’t have to be in one camp or the other. Cannabis can be used in conjunction with your medication; we never tell anyone to stop taking their medication,” she says. “This can be an integral part of your treatment plan. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.”
This is exactly what Shields and Lagano have built the Holistic Cannabis Academy for: broadening perspectives and giving health practitioners a greater understanding of cannabis’ place in the medical world.
The program is run entirely online with rolling admissions, so people can join at any time. Shields markets the program in a variety of ways, including accessing medical conferences and hosting online summits. Their first summit spanned four days, 28 speakers, and 17,000 people opting in to the program.
The classes aren’t limited to certain geographical locations either, which means their student body reaches across the globe, including Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Australia. In fact, interest abroad may be less apprehensive than here in the states.
“I see those in Canada as already being more holistically minded, so this isn’t that big a leap [for them],” says Shields. “As Canada looks to fully legalize, they’re not hamstrung by the same issues that we have [in the United States], so it’s been more comfortable for them to think about it.”
The HCA was approved for continuing education credit hours in Canada, which makes it easier for students to justify spending time and money on the program.
The Holistic Cannabis Academy was recently approved for continuing education credit hours through the Canadian Health Coach Alliance and Canadian Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
This is a big deal, because it allows health practitioners to meet their continuing education requirements while taking the HCA’s course, which makes it much easier for students to justify spending time and money taking the program. They also run similar programs in the U.S. with nutrition organizations, but it takes a lot of time and patience to gain approval since each American institution has their own governing organization and requirements.
These organizations are important to the HCA since the majority of their clientele are not physicians. “Most of the people who are gravitating towards our kind of holistic cannabis education training are allied health professionals,” says Shields. This includes acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, nutritionists, drug rehab counselors, mental health therapists, herbalists, and health coaches.
Shields believes that because these health practitioners generally spend a greater amount of time with their patients, as opposed to physicians who are usually in-and-out of each appointment, they are able to see the benefits of cannabis in a deeper way.
Helping Physicians Understand Cannabis as Medicine
As for why physicians are less likely to take interest in the program, Shields believes it’s simply a lack of information coming through the traditional channels.
“I think with [physicians] there’s a lot of, ‘Well, if I didn’t learn it in medical school, it can’t be true… this doesn’t have a lot of validity,’” Shields says. “Part of the problem is there’s a wealth of research available, [but] most of it has not been done in the U.S., so it requires a physician to look at it outside of the traditional channels. If the continuing education that goes on with physicians is very often delivered by pharmaceutical companies, that means they haven’t heard of the endocannabinoid system. They haven’t heard of cannabinoid medicine.”
“If the continuing education that goes on with physicians is often delivered by pharmaceutical companies, that means they haven't heard of the endocannabinoid system. They haven't heard of cannabinoid medicine.”
Donna Shields
That said, Shields does believe there is a big way in which physicians are learning about medical cannabis: from their patients. With more people broaching the subject with their doctors and sharing first-hand accounts of progress they’ve made using cannabis, physicians are, in a way, being forced to acknowledge its medicinal properties.
“You know this whole stigma—and we refer to it as “cannaphobia”—it exists, and it’s alive and well. I think one of the problems particularly for licensed practitioners is, if they’re talking to their clients about [cannabis], they’re worried, is this within my scope of practice?”
Shields and the HCA say the answer to that is a resounding “yes.”
“This is education, and you have an obligation to your patient to give them a variety of options. It’s up to them to choose what they want to do.”
Still, not all patients are comfortable speaking to their doctor about cannabis. Shields notes, “A lot of patients are kind of intimidated [to have this conversation], particularly with a physician, who are kind of put on a pedestal.”
This is why it is so important for physicians to embrace education about medical cannabis and play an active role in deconstructing the stigmas. Fortunately, there is some hope. Slowly but surely, physicians are beginning to come around.
Exploring Patient Options and HCA Programs
When the HCA program first launched, the reaction was heavy with uncertainty. Now, only three years later, Shields sees a lot of the same physicians progressing their views as they witness legislative changes along with the personal accounts of their patient base.
Ultimately, the benefits of the Holistic Cannabis Academy program as not just for patients, but for healthcare professionals as well.
“If they have this level of competency, they can offer something that the health coach down the street doesn’t have, and therefore more clients will be interested to come to them. They can build their business, their practice, and generate revenue.”
As for patients who wish their own doctors would take the HCA program, Shields says they can offer some resources. While the HCA will not give out medical advice, they will inform patients about how to find good information on cannabis to take back to their doctors.
Student by student, the Holistic Cannabis Academy continues to educate all manner of health care practitioners about the benefits of medical cannabis, and in a world that is rapidly embracing cannabis reform, this education will grow in value for both curious, hopeful patients, and the practitioners who treat them.

Heterosexual women continue to lead the pack in orgasm disparity. How come? Ongoing research has led experts to diverse answers in resolving this persisting orgasm gap. While not nearly enough research has been done on the subject in direct relation to the queer community, we can learn a lot through more recent findings that both lesbian and bisexual women have a slimmer gap than their heterosexual counterparts.
“Differences in Orgasm Frequency Among Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Men and Women in a U.S. National Sample” was published in February of 2017 in Archives of Sexual Behavior. The study surveyed more than 52,000 people, including 340 lesbian women, 1112 bisexual women, and 24, 102 heterosexual women. Of the participants, Ninety-five percent of heterosexual men reported usually or always experiencing orgasm during sexual intimacy. Heterosexual women reported 65 percent. Bisexual women reported 66 percent and lesbian women reported 86 percent.
The survey found that, among women who received oral and manual stimulation during sexual activity, 86 percent reported usually or always reaching orgasm—compared to the 35 percent of those who had only vaginal-penetration.
Surveys conducted by the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior in 2010 also found that “women are more likely to orgasm when they engage in a variety of sex acts and when oral sex or vaginal intercourse is included.”
Slate’s Christina Cauterucci summarized, “This breakdown indicates that female genitals are not to blame for the orgasm gap. You could say that straight women are least likely to achieve orgasm during sex, but it’s just as true to say that if you have sex with a straight man, you’ve chosen the demographic least likely to make you come.”
In our mainstream culture, sex is defined under the terms of penetrative sex and leaves much to be desired regarding inclusivity, as well in the bedroom. And valuing vaginal-penetration and climax more than clitoral is not a new phenomenon.
In neurologist Sigmund Freud’s 1905 book, Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Freud examines his theory of sexuality in relation to childhood and development. In it he views women’s pleasure as inherently tied males’ and deems the clitoral orgasm as “infantile” and “immature” in comparison to the vaginal orgasm. Freud writes,
“With the change to femininity, the clitoris should wholly or in part hand over its sensitivity, and at the same time its importance, to the vagina.”
Over a century after its publication, the implications of a superior form of women’s orgasm continue to inform our societal view of women’s pleasure and sexual normalcy.
In an article for alternet.org, sociologist and author Lisa Wade explained, “The focus on men’s internal wants and sensations also draws our attention to his satisfaction. Thus his orgasm, but not necessarily hers, becomes a critical part of what must happen for a sexual encounter to be successful and fulfilling. This is part of why intercourse, a sexual act that is strongly correlated with orgasm for men, is the only act that almost everyone agrees counts as “real sex,” whereas activities that are more likely to produce orgasm in women are considered optional foreplay.”
The documentary Orgasm Inc. debuted in 2009 and followed director Liz Canner as she explored women’s pleasure in relation to profit and societal stereotypes.
Charletta is introduced as a clinical trial test subject for Dr. Stuarts Malloy’s invention, The Orgasmatron. Charletta reports having trouble achieving orgasm and begins the trial with 10 other women.
She initially told Canner, “It has taken me a long time to get to a place where I wasn’t humiliated, so that I could come here and do this and even talk to you like this… I feel like I’m well on my way to being healed and being more healthy and normal.”
In the film, her surgical procedure takes 40 minutes—20 longer than expected, and while the benefits were unknown, the risks included shock, paralysis, epidural hemorrhage, and cerebrospinal fluid leak
Upon her second visit, Dr. Malloy concluded that the trial was unsuccessful and removed the device. Charletta confided to Canner that she was ultimately okay with the results and proposed there are other ways of achieving orgasm than “sexual intercourse” anyway. The revelation came as a surprise to Canner, and she asked Charletta if she could achieve orgasm through other means.
“Yes, I can. I am not without orgasms. I can have orgasms. It’s just not the normal situation where two people get together and they have sexual intercourse and each has an orgasm. And that’s why I say, maybe that’s not real. Maybe that’s just what the movies tell us is real.”
Comprehensive sexual education is severely lacking in the United States, and it leads people to rely on what they see in pop culture. This makes sexual education events invaluable in picking up where public school health left off, especially when learning about pleasure.
In an effort to celebrate women’s pleasure and educate folks on both the orgasm and the clitoris, Vibrant—an inclusive sex toy retailer in Denver—hosted an Orgasm Day celebration earlier this year. The event included a “clothes on” orgasm workshop led by licensed clinical professional counselor and the resident sexologist at Vibrant Dr. Laura Deitsch, a BedPost Confessions performance, and a sex toy pop-up shop.
In speaking about the goal of the event and the implications of media perceptions in the bedroom, Deitsch said,
“I think that we are all somewhat subject to the culture in which we live, and we end up internalizing these expectations regardless of whether they could logically apply or not.”
Expectations like a female-bodied person should always achieve orgasm through penetration by male-bodied penis, and that there is a definition for a successful sex session and an unsuccessful sex session.
“First of all, if we’re in a queer relationship, then there may not be a penis or there may be two penises. And where does the female orgasm come in in that definition of sex? It sets up this false expectation and false narrative around what sex is. When somebody buys into that narrative, female-bodied people are more guaranteed to be disappointed. It opens the door for there to be shame, lack of self confidence, harassment, feelings of inadequacy, and that you’re somehow doing something wrong,” said Deitsch.
She cited a current client whom she is working with who is in her late thirties and recently came to the revelation that she is allowed to adapt the definition of sex to meet her needs. “What’s important to me is that people understand that we’ve been fed some inaccurate information and we’ve internalized it… and it wreaks havoc in our psyche.”
Deitsch focuses on education to close the orgasm gap. She teaches communication techniques, how to release shame, how to work around trauma, and how pleasure manifests in different bodies.
Athena Lund is a sacred intimacy coach in Boulder who has identified these different bodies into nine classifications of vaginas. A woman can be a sheep, cat, buffalo, bear, wolf, antelope, deer, fix, dancing woman, or a combination. Classification depends on the depth of the vagina, the taste, the scent, the distance between her vagina and her clitoris, her lubrication, the location of g-spot, the temperature of fluids, the types of positions favored, how long it takes to orgasm, and the sort of orgasm she could have.
Since its discovery, the pleasure of women has taken a very turbulent journey. Alfred Kinsey wrote about the clitoris in his 1948 book Sexual Behavior In The Human Female. “Intercourse is not the best means of pleasure for women… the clitoris is the center of female pleasure.” The full anatomy of female clitoris wasn’t discovered until 1998— it is often mentioned that this was 30 years after man landed on the moon.
While we have come a long way in learning about the clitoris scientifically, there is so much room to grow in teaching and speaking about it socially. Luckily, local events like Orgasm Day and national projects like Cliteracy aim to educate on the nuances of female form and pleasure.
