Happy 4th of July
Uniforms are one of the ways I show my students that men have cared about clothing. And as women got recruited into the armed forces, giving them natty outfits was one of the ways of coaxing them to choose one branch of the services over another. This poster from the Library of Congress dates to 1943. The model’s dark uniform and hat and the serious expression on her carefully made up face balance between the sober nature of her work and the persistence of femininity that was valued at the same time. Women remained in skirt suits unless the nature their work required pants. Of course, WWII engaged an enormous number of men and American women were needed for all kinds of support services, and each branch created an auxiliary force.

US Congressional Serial Set DOC 12626-1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
United States. (1963). United States congressional serial set DOC 12626-1 (412 pages). U.S. Government Printing Office. https://hdl.handle.net/2027/mdp.39015087695790 Full text available via HathiTrust
The US Congressional Serial Set DOC 12626-1 is a GPO (Government Printing Office) publication from 1963 that includes documents, reports, and journals, such as information about books, articles, pamphlets, government documents, legislation, and information regarding topical concerns from the current year. In 1963 it is clear that the main cause of concern is the threat of communism, the power of the USSR, and international relations.
To elaborate, James O. Eastland, chairman of the Senate International Security Subcommittee writes, “Since… 1962, the subcommittee has been gratified by the tremendous growth of interest in the subject of world communism and how to combat it. This interest has been stimulated by the great out-pouring of literature in this field supplying a vast reservoir of valuable information… This bibliography will be of inestimable assistance in guiding the Senate to information essential for the proper framing of legislation with regard to the Communist problem,” (Eastland, 1963, p. 7).
This fascinating document hosts interesting texts that originate from fears (of the government and the public) from a very intense period in history. The publication provides context and readings regarding how the government and committees gathered data and created opinions, leading to legislation and official government publishing. The US Congressional Serial Set of 1963 is a fascinating and lengthy document, perfect for interested parties and researchers, as it reveals the legislative system and government printing of the Red Scare era.
Themes: Access to government information Congressional research Government publications Legislative history Public policy 1960s politics and history Government transparency Threats of communism International relations concerns US and USSR relations

The National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, a prestigious archive dedicated to preserving America's sound heritage, has unveiled its 2024 inductees. This year's diverse selection features a remarkable blend of iconic hip-hop albums, timeless classics, and even a beloved Christmas song, reflecting the rich tapestry of American music. A Celebration of American Sound: From Hip-Hop to Holiday Cheer Leading the pack are genre-defining albums like The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Ready to Die" and Green Day's "Dookie." These groundbreaking releases not only revolutionized their respective genres but also captured the cultural zeitgeist of their eras. "Ready to Die" established Biggie Smalls as a rap icon, while "Dookie" propelled Green Day to mainstream success, forever altering the landscape of punk rock. Notorious B.I.G. Beyond hip-hop and punk, the list showcases a love for American music history. Gene Autry's rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" joins the registry, solidifying its place as a quintessential holiday classic. Similarly, jazz enthusiasts will be delighted with the inclusion of "Clarinet Marmalade," a spirited performance by the all-Black 369th U.S. Infantry Band. This selection highlights the vital contributions of African Americans to American music. A Diverse Selection Spanning a Century The 25 recordings chosen this year represent a vast array of genres and eras, ranging from 1919 to 1998. This diversity ensures that the National Recording Registry reflects the rich tapestry of American music. Fans of classic pop will be thrilled to see the inclusion of Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" and Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star"/"Magic Moments." Meanwhile, soul music enthusiasts can celebrate the addition of Héctor Lavoe's "El Cantante" and Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine." The registry also recognizes the significance of comedy, with Lily Tomlin's "This is a Recording" securing a spot. This selection highlights the enduring influence of stand-up comedy on American culture. Preserving Our Audio Legacy: A Collaborative Effort The National Recording Registry functions as a vital archive, ensuring that culturally significant recordings are preserved for future generations. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden emphasizes the collaborative nature of the selection process, stating, "We have selected audio treasures worthy of preservation with our partners this year, including a wide range of music from the past 100 years, as well as comedy." Public participation is also encouraged, with Hayden welcoming "the public's input on what we should preserve next." The selection criteria for the National Recording Registry are clear: recordings must be at least ten years old and possess "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance." With nearly four million items in its collection, the Library of Congress is dedicated to safeguarding America's rich audio heritage. The 2024 inductees represent a significant step towards achieving this goal. A Look at Some of the Other Notable Additions The 25 recordings chosen for the 2024 National Recording Registry offer a glimpse into the vast soundscape of American music. Here's a closer look at some of the other noteworthy selections: Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's "La-Di-Da-Di": This pioneering hip-hop track is credited with influencing countless artists and is considered a landmark in the genre's development. The Cars' self-titled debut: This iconic new wave album established The Cars as a major force in the 1980s music scene. Johnny Mathis's "Chances Are": This timeless ballad continues to resonate with listeners across generations. The Chicks' "Wide Open Spaces": This critically acclaimed album marked a turning point for the country music group, showcasing their artistic evolution. Kronos Quartet's "Pieces of Africa": This innovative album explores the rich musical traditions of Africa, pushing the boundaries of classical music. These selections, along with the others mentioned above, solidify the National Recording Registry's commitment to preserving the diverse and dynamic soundscape of America.

Pro Con Controversial Issues
Tumblr media
Pro con controversial issues Pro con controversial issues, ProCon.org is a non-profit organization that promotes critical thinking by presenting for and against tips for role-play debates. When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons. Sigmund Freud Learn to think and judge for yourself, responsibly. Don't accept everything without criticism and as absolutely true, everything which is brought to your attention. Learn from life. The biggest mistake of my life was that I believed everything faithfully which came from the top, and I didn't dare to have the least bit of doubt about the truth of that which was presented to me. Walk through life with your eyes open. Don't become one-sided; examine the pros and cons in all matters. Rudolf Hoss Pro and con are opposites, that fact is clearly seen. If progress means to move forward, then what does congress mean? Nipsey Russell If you are trying to take a difficult decision and you're weighing up the pros and cons, you have frank conversations. Everybody knows this in their walk of life. Tony Blair Lincoln had no such person that he could talk with. Often, as a result, he debated with himself, and he would draw up a kind of list of the pros and cons of an argument, and carefully figure them out, and he might test them in public. David Herbert Donald ProCon.org is a nonpartisan website that presents both sides of controversial issues in a straightforward, primarily pro-con format.
