My new 2014 Lexus RX 350. 
I was originally looking at Tauruses, then decided to look at customer satisfaction ratings rather than just stay with something familiar. Lexus was among the top, and I rejected the others for various reasons.
I wanted a 3L engine and comfort, so a mid-sized sedan seemed about right. The ES 350 seemed the way to go, and I wanted a pearl white color. But I was paying off debts, so didn’t want to get saddled with another until I was ready.
As time went on I started to consider getting a burgundy car instead of white. I ended up falling in lust with an RX 450h, which is a hybrid. In the end I decided the amount of gasoline I’d save wouldn’t likely make up for a) the increase in initial cost and b) the cost of replacing the batteries in, say, 5 years. So instead of the hybrid crossover I decided to just get a crossover. 
In the end, I spotted this gold RX 350, the timing was right and the price was pretty good. It’s slightly older than the 2016 ES models I was originally looking at, but of course I get a better price this way. The lighter color doesn’t show the dirt and scratches as well, and the paint is in great shape, so I can’t complain there. That and the tan interior mean it won’t absorb heat as quickly in the summer, which is also a plus.
Whomever bought it new didn’t get any extras. (Edit: Correction: it’s got the Premium and Display Audio packages.) Sure, it’s got a bunch of convenience features to start with. But not having the extras means a) less stuff to break down and b) lower initial cost. Sticker price was $22k. So, yeah. I can sacrifice the heated windshield wipers.
In the end it’s still a luxury car, still has plenty of awesome features, still has more than enough power to get over those mountains. And a roof rack. I didn’t mean to go for an SUV. Which this isn’t -- it’s a crossover, which is basically a station wagon with delusions of grandeur. I’m happy with that. I like station wagons, I like having the cargo space, I like having a roof rack.

The current-generation NX might not be long for this world, but it’s still uniquely positioned as is.

For 2021, Lexus hosted a key party of sorts for its 6-year-old NX compact crossover. Previously, you could get an NX hybrid and an NX F Sport, but you couldn’t combine the two. That makes the arrival of this NX 300h F Sport Black Line about as much of a surprise as Monday following Sunday, though it’s a special-edition model limited to 1,000 units. Even so, at its heart, the latest NX mashup is plenty comfortable and competent.

Honestly, the F Sport should be the NX’s de facto face. Not only is this mesh-style grille far more appealing than the standard one, the F Sport body kit adds some weight to the lower front bumper, which has a pretty aggressive upward angle on the regular NX 300h and looks like somebody forgot to draw in a chin. Throw in some F Sport-specific 18-inch alloy wheels and you’ve got a solid looker, even though the NX has been around for a bit now.
It might not carry the flashy looks of its newer, harder-edged Teutonic competition, but the 2021 Lexus NX 300h F Sport’s interior is still a damn fine place to spend time. Unique touches inside are limited to contrasting blue stitching, a heated steering wheel and aluminum pedals, but there’s no sense messing with success. The seats have superb cushioning and support, and the center console’s raised setup means glances take less time away from the road ahead. It’s a little old-school in that physical switchgear absolutely dominates the NX’s interior, but the controls have good tactility and are dead simple to use with very little distraction. Cubbies and stash spots abound, including my favorite one, nestled just ahead of the center armrest and covered by a small removable vanity mirror. The automotive world needs more weird little touches like that, where nobody’s really quite sure why it’s there. I mean, there’s still a mirror in the sun visor, so who’s it for? The back row?
Speaking of, some compact crossovers choose to sacrifice interior space in the name of aesthetics, but not the Lexus NX. It doesn’t have the flat, wagon-ish roof of, say, a BMW X1, but my 6-foot frame doesn’t have any issues in the back seats, and with almost 43 inches of legroom, I definitely have room to stretch the ol’ gams. If you’re just one person or have a small family, the NX’s 16.8 cubic feet of cargo space should be plenty, although the hybrid system takes up a bit of space, shrinking the total capacity down from 17.7 cubic feet in gas-only variants. While that’s more storage than the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class can muster up, it falls well behind competitors like the Audi Q3 (23.7 cubic feet) and BMW X1 (27.1 cubic feet).
Smoothness over sport
Lexus creates some of the quietest, smoothest-driving vehicles in the luxury segment, and even its second-littlest crossover really swings for the fences in this regard. While F Sport models do gain a sharper suspension, the NX Black Line is still among the most comfortable vehicles in the segment. Whatever bumps aren’t dispatched by the dampers transmit little movement to the cabin, and in traditional Lexus fashion, there’s a decent amount of sound-deadening material throughout the body, keeping most unwanted road noises at bay. Gobs of pedal modulation make limo stops a breeze, and the steering turns the car, which I imagine is the extent to which its future owners care about that.
It’s good that the brevity-averse 2021 Lexus NX 300h F Sport Black Line is a smooth operator, because it sure ain’t a quick one. Like all other NX hybrids, the Black Line gets its forward motion from a 2.5-liter inline-four mated to Lexus’ hybrid hardware for a net 194 horsepower. It’s a regular old hybrid, not a plug-in, so its battery is limited to a couple miles of electric-only operation at sub-highway speeds, but leaving the NX in Eco mode really puts that nickel-metal hydride to work. On one suburban jaunt, with speed limits never eclipsing 40 mph, I ran largely on electricity for a few dozen miles, resulting in an impressive 45 mpg. That’s an edge case, though — the EPA rates this NX variant at 33 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, which is OK for an electrified all-wheel-drive SUV, but I was able to beat both figures with little more than a light foot. The continuously variable transmission is so well tuned that I basically forget it exists, which is about all you can ask for.
There are driving modes beyond Eco, even though that is my clear favorite. Eco is all about efficiency, so throttle inputs are dulled and the powertrain does its best to be in its most economical range at all times. Normal, the default mode, has a firmer throttle response that does a better job of providing post-stoplight acceleration, but it eats into efficiency a bit. There’s a Sport mode, too, but why bother? Yes, the NX 300h F Sport does offer some semblance of sportiness, but it’s clear that the underlying Lexus still wants to be cool and collected as often as possible. The Black Line also includes Lexus’ fake-engine-sound synthesizer, which thankfully has a proper Off setting.
Lexus’ leather game is on point. Those seats are even more comfortable than they look.

Out, damned touchpad, out, I say!
One day, I won’t have to write about Lexus’ accursed infotainment system, which has been kicking around in various iterations for almost a decade now. Its current method of manipulation, a touchpad on the center console, remains as odd and unintuitive as the day it came out, as the cursor “snaps” to various parts of the screen while your finger tracks along. It’s hard to manipulate sitting still, nevertheless while driving.
An 8-inch screen, which is what my tester has, is standard and it’s fine, rocking the same old aesthetic Lexus has relied on for years. A 10.3-inch screen is available on other trims, which adds navigation, but it’s not standard on the Black Line, despite it being the most expensive NX variant available. Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still along for the ride no matter what. Just add touch capability, for crying out loud, it’s already available on the LS. Who cares if you have to move the screen closer so people can actually reach it? A second, smaller info display lives between the speedometer and power delivery gauge, relaying relevant information about tire pressures, fuel economy or the trip meter.
If there’s one corner of in-car tech that Lexus has down pat, it’s safety. All NX models come standard with the Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0 array of passive and active technologies. This bundle features lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning and full-speed adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are included in the NX Black Line, as well. Parent company Toyota has had plenty of time to refine these hands-on systems, and it shows in their operation.
I can only hope that the next generation of NX gets rid of this touchpad once and for all.

Down to brass tacks
In its press materials, Lexus says the NX Black Line prioritizes its customers’ desire for “exclusive styling and value,” but the latter claim is iffy, given that it’s the most expensive variant by base price, starting at $47,835 including destination. My tester rings in at $48,745 with some fripperies like door edge guards and illuminated doorsills, which is quite the pill to swallow for a compact luxury crossover that’s due for a replacement. But in context, it’s about on par with its competitors, all of which offer similar base prices and similar chances to load the cars up to high heaven with all manner of options.
The 2021 Lexus NX 300h F Sport Black Line’s hybrid powertrain and focus on proper old-school luxury help set it apart from the crowd. If what you’re after is comfort and efficiency, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better fit in the compact SUV segment.

2021 Toyota Mirai XLE First Test: Delightful and Grounded
The 2021 Toyota Mirai has transformed itself from the oddball eco-friendly four-door that you occasionally see in a California Costco parking lot to a handsome, slick-looking sedan. This second-generation Mirai now looks like a fully developed car, and it’s more upscale and more dominant in the fledgling fuel cell class.
Featuring different design language and a confident personality, the all-new Toyota Mirai is 2.5 inches lower, 2.7 inches wider, and 3.3 inches longer. Exterior highlights include the dual-stacked headlights, a broader streamlined grille, 19-inch five-double-spoke wheels, and a full-width LED taillight panel.
The new platform, rear-drive configuration, and newfound ability to seat five instead of four are significant improvements. Above all else, though, the one feat that should matter to proponents of a cleaner future and capture the attention of competitors is the newly improved 402-mile EPA-estimated driving range.
Our test vehicle, priced at $52,330, came in the XLE trim with Heavy Metal paint ($425) and the Advanced Technology package ($1,410). In addition to the reconstructive surgery, the newly redesigned Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) from Toyota delivers a smooth-sailing driving experience and is exceptionally comfortable.
2021 Toyota Mirai: Slightly Quicker and Smooth as Hell
The Mirai drives delightfully no matter what road you travel on. Sharing its GA-L architecture with the Lexus LS, the Mirai gets through road defects, parking lot speed bumps, and dips without causing a scene. The nicely tuned front and rear multilink suspension, in addition to a rock-solid chassis, translate to premium drivability, resulting in a pleasantly easygoing ride.
Backed by 182 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque from an electric motor (now mounted on the rear wheels instead of the front), the Mirai is noticeably quick on initial acceleration but then cools off to an acceptable hybrid-like pace. Based on our testing, the 2021 Mirai is 1.2 seconds quicker down the line than our long-term 2016 Mirai achieving a 0–60 dash in 7.4 seconds. If you insist we mention the quarter-mile test results here (because why not), the Mirai accomplished it in 15.8 seconds at 87.2 mph.
On the topic of acceleration, road test editor Chris Walton said, “The best part is 0–20 mph, where you can feel the torque. Quiet and repeatable. It is fun to watch the power display, and you cannot tell at all when the handoff from battery power to fuel cell power occurs.”
2021 Toyota Mirai: Grippy, and Balanced, BUT …
Braking, for the most part, is consistent. However, it can sometimes be unclear how much stopping power is necessary from the driver due to regenerative braking. From our track test, the stopping distances were as follows: 118, 122, 119, 122 feet.
Moreover, the second-gen Mirai performed about a second faster than the outgoing Mirai on our figure-eight course. While undergoing the skidpad assessment, it managed a maximum lateral grip of 0.86 g. The hydrogen fuel cell electric sedan completed its best lap in 27.4 seconds at an average of 0.61 g.
Walton, on how the Mirai performed: “That wooden brake pedal was a detriment to the car on the figure eight. It must be brake by wire because it’s nearly impossible to modulate. It has a very digital feel. As a result, it was difficult to release the brakes (progressively) at the appropriate time going into the turns.”
Despite handling better than the previous generation in everyday driving, the Mirai is no sport sedan. Driven hard for our testing, the Mirai exhibited vague steering and “a decent amount of grip and acceleration with good balance,” Walton said, “but it’s everything else that suffers. This fuel cell is a smooth-riding, decently quick transportation pod.”
2021 Toyota Mirai: Breaking Down the Powertrain
By combining stored hydrogen with oxygen from the air, the Mirai’s fuel cell produces an electric current, and the only emission is water. 11 pounds of hydrogen are stored in three 10,000-psi carbon-fiber-reinforced tanks. Combined power from the fuel cell and the battery goes to a rear-mounted electric motor that drives the wheels using a single-speed transmission.
The battery (located between the rear seat and the trunk) stores excess electricity generated by regenerative braking and the fuel cell. Equipped with a more compact lithium-ion battery than the first generation, it has a higher capacity (4.0 amp-hours compared to 6.5 amp-hours).
An increase of power output from the fuel cell from 114 kilowatts to 128 kW came through optimizing the gas channel separator electrodes and seals and relocating the air intake manifold. The 650-volt fuel cell, which is 20 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter in the 2021 model, was relocated under the hood. Integrating a lightweight power control unit with the fuel stack also helped reduce the system size. A longitudinally mounted tank in the center of the car decreases legroom; this is why even though there’s a fifth seat now, rear passengers seated in the middle may not be as comfortable.
2021 Toyota Mirai: H2O on the Highway
Even though the Mirai XLE we tested at our Auto Club Speedway venue is approximately 170 pounds heavier than the previous generation, the fuel-cell-based sedan moves positively despite its 4,243-pound curb weight. Thanks in part to improved weight distribution and a lower center of gravity, the attractive FCEV feels firmly grounded all the time.
On the highway, the Mirai handles like any other mainstream car, so much so that sometimes you forget it is a fuel cell vehicle. Until the H2O release button on the dashboard reminds you to use the accelerator prudently. We wonder what other drivers were thinking at the sight of the Mirai ridding itself of its water contents in the middle of the road.
At any rate, wind noise at highway speeds is moderate, but it’s nothing that amounts to a nuisance—even with the JBL sound system turned off. The steering wheel feels nice in your palms, and the inputs are quite precise during swift lane changes. Suffice it to say that the 4,000-plus-pound Mirai does not have trouble passing or keeping up with the flow of Los Angeles traffic.
2021 Toyota Mirai: Testing the Range
Our test fell short of the EPA-estimated 402 miles; however, considering how uncivil we were with the accelerator pedal, it comes as no surprise. We spent a weekend driving the 2021 Toyota Mirai XLE in everyday situations and drove it more aggressively than we ideally should have. And in all fairness, most of the driving took place on the highway. After using approximately half a tank, our average mpg-e was 63 over a total of 158.6 miles, at which the indicated range remaining showed 143 miles. Had we continued on this trajectory, we’d have only managed 300 miles on the tank. With the dearth of hydrogen fueling stations at present, it’s imperative to take your driving style into account when planning your refueling schedule, especially on long trips.
Still, subjected to further testing, it turns out we like the zero-emissions cruiser more than the forecast had been predicting.
