Big Changes in Store for Dodge Durango

There are rumblings of some major changes in the works for the Dodge Durango. The mid-size SUV may soon return to the more traditional body-on-frame construction of its earlier days and a hybrid options seems likely to emerge in the not too distant future. 

The upcoming fourth generation Durango will be constructed alongside the new Jeep Wagoneer at Fiat Chrysler’s Warren assembly plant. The two vehicles will be similar mechanically and in construction. The juxtaposition of the new Durango and Wagoneer has fueled speculation that the Durango will be making a return to the body-on-frame construction of its first two generations. The revamped Warren plant will also house production of the Grand Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The other big Durango rumor is that a hybrid version of the Durango may soon be added to Dodge’s portfolio. According to Mopar Insiders the Durango could be outfitted with Fiat Chrysler’s new eTorque hybrid technology as soon as the 2021 model year. The eTorque technology should provide some fuel economy improvement to the very thirsty Durango.

Le côté positif d’être dans le domaine de l’automobile depuis près de 40 ans, c’est que j’ai vécu certaines expériences auxquelles je peux faire référence lorsque j’évalue un nouveau véhicule. Dans le cas du Kia Sorento dont il est question ici, l’arrivée de ce nouveau VUS sur le marché me rappelle l’arrivée de la marque au Canada.

Malgré le fait que Kia fut déjà aux États-Unis depuis 1994, ce n’est qu’en 1999 que le constructeur sud-coréen se soit présenté au Canada. La première sortie de presse de la compagnie s’est faite dans la région des Cantons-de-l ’Est et j’y étais. À cette époque, si mes souvenirs sont bons, les deux véhicules en vedette étaient une petite berline appelée Sephia et un petit VUS amusant, le Sportage. Kia avait mandaté un de mes amis ontariens, John Morris, pour animer cet évènement. John y avait inclus un jeu mais cela n’a pas d’importance. Ce que j’avais retenu, c’était que la marque Kia me paraissait déjà plus «élaborée» que Hyundai (dont c’est la presque jumelle aujourd’hui). À cette époque, une de mes consœurs à l’école avait décidé d’acheter le Sportage alors qu’une autre de mes connaissances, alors pilote de ligne, avait choisi la Sephia. Je me rappelle aussi qu’à l’époque, certains journalistes un peu plus vieux avaient porté des commentaires condescendants sur Kia (je me demande ce qu’ils en penseraient aujourd’hui). Les «jokes» ne manquaient pas non plus sur le marque (une de mes préférées, c’était de prédire, en Poisson d’Avril, que Kia, à cette époque, allait arriver en Formule Un…ce qui ne surprendrait plus personne aujourd’hui!). Pourtant, la marque n’a pas que survécu, elle a pris de l’importance. Et la preuve? On la trouve dans le nouveau Kia Sorento. Et la marque est de plus en plus reconnue pour sa fiabilité, ce dont les anciens journalistes redoutaient (en passant, mes deux amis mentionnés plus haut ont conservé leur Kia longtemps, plus de dix ans et ce qui leur a «enlevé» leur Kia…ce fut la rouille!).

Lorsque le Sorento a «remplacé» le Sportage, Kia a accompli tout un exploit. Dès ses premiers tours de roues, le Sorento s’est établi une place vénérable au sein de l’industrie automobile au Canada et depuis ce temps, ce VUS intermédiaire affiche une réputation quand même enviable, il faut l’avouer. Malgré tout, Kia a décidé de réviser son Sorento et son modèle 2021 est encore une fois un tout nouveau véhicule.

Regardez bien le nouveau Kia Sorento de 2021. Il a complètement été redessiné (par une équipe dirigée par les légendaires designers Peter Schreyer and Luc Donckerwolke, tous deux issus de l’école Audi-VW) et sa ligne n’est pas sans nous rappeler un peu celle de son grand frère, le Telluride. Son design est nettement plus aiguisé que celui de son prédécesseur et il s’attire des remarques très positives. En effet, les changements concernant le Sorento de quatrième génération ne manquent pas d’attrait. C’est donc une version SX X-Line (la X-Line est une nouveauté de 2021 disponible avec une galerie au toit et des ajouts de décoration aux couvre pare-chocs) qui m’a été confiée par Kia Canada. Mais je vous laisse juger par vous-même de son look. Moi, il m’a plu!

Dès que l’on ouvre la portière, on remarque immédiatement le tableau de bord qui surprend par ses allures rectilignes. On aime ou on n’aime pas, je l’ai trouvé original. Il est dominé par un grand écran central de plus de 10 pouces qui semble couler vers le bloc d’instrumentation. Celui-ci, d’ailleurs, est très convivial avec des lettres et chiffres facilement lisibles! Incidemment, il n’y avait pas de GPS dans cette version huppée du Sorento et, curieusement, il n’y avait pas, non plus, de prise dédiée à AppleCarPlay ou à Android Auto! Alors, le conducteur devra se fier à son téléphone intelligent (il y a une prise USB pour sa charge). J’ai su, par la suite, que les prises AppleCarPlay et Android faisaient partie des modèles moins élaborés de Sorento. Est-ce moi qui a fait erreur? Ah oui! N’oublions pas la sonorisation Bose qui vient avec la finition X-Line.

Dans le centre, la console occupe une place prépondérante et elle inclut le levier de vitesses traditionnel, les portes gobelets et diverses commandes dont celle du choix de terrain à attaquer en mode hors-route (un mode que très, très peu de gens adopteront avec le Sorento, j’en suis sûr). Les sièges avant sont relativement confortables mais n’offrent pas beaucoup de support latéral. Mais, ils sont chauffants. Toutefois, la sellerie de cuir matelassée m’a paru de grande qualité avec une confection de qualité.

Les places arrière (deux sièges dans le cas du véhicule qui me fut confié) jouissent de beaucoup de débattement pour les jambes des occupants. Il y avait une petite banquette à deux places tout à l’arrière. Ces places sont relativement faciles à rejoindre mais leur confort est aussi relatif quoique le plancher y soit assez bas pour les jambes de petites personnes.

Si les dossiers de ces sièges sont en place, l’utilisateur de Sorento ne verra que peu d’espace de chargement à sa disposition. Mais la donne change rapidement en rabaissant ces dossiers (et encore plus si l’on replie ceux des sièges du centre)!  Pour l’excédent de bagages ou le transport d’objets encombrants (mais légers), il y a toujours la galerie sur le toit!

Question mécanique, tous les Sorento vendus au Canada sont à traction intégrale. Toutefois, il y a deux moteurs au catalogue, tous deux à quatre cylindres d’une cylindrée de 2,5 litres. Le premier est atmosphérique et il fait 191 chevaux et il ne vient qu’avec des modèles de base. Le deuxième, turbocompressé, fait alors 281 chevaux et les deux sont combinés à une boîte automatique à huit rapports (à double embrayage avec les versions les plus luxueuse). Il n’y a plus de V6 au catalogue mais, Kia nous promet une version hybride régulière et une autre rechargeable d’ici 2022. La traction intégrale est de série et cette boîte de transfert permet le choix de fonction dont il est question plus haut. Les jantes de 20 pouces de mon véhicule d’essai étaient montées de pneus d’hiver Continental.

Sur la route

S’il y a quelque chose que Kia a compris avec le temps, c’est que les VUS ne sont pas souvent utilisés hors-route. Pour cela, il existe des véhicules plus élaborés sur le marché. Mais les VUS que le Sorento doit concurrencer sont plus axés vers la conduite sur autoroute. Donc, le nouveau Sorento est exactement cela, un véhicule parfaitement adapté aux longs trajets. Je l’ai conduit sur autoroute, sur routes secondaires et en pleine ville et jamais je ne me suis plaint du confort, du silence de roulement et de l’aspect pratique du véhicule. Ses accélérations de 0 à 100 km/h peuvent se faire en quelque sept secondes alors que les reprises sont très rassurantes quoique, dans certaines circonstances, j’ai senti une sorte d’hésitation de la boîte auto. Le son du moteur est bien atténué à l’intérieur. Même sur des routes bosselées reliant de petites villes des Laurentides, le Sorento demeure collé sur la route alors que la direction, quoique tendre, demeure précise et prévisible. Le freinage est aussi à la hauteur de la situation. Et la visibilité y est bonne sauf qu’en vue trois-quarts arrière, le profilage du toit cache un peu cette visibilité. Évidemment, il y a beaucoup d’assistance à la conduite qui vient jouer en la faveur du Sorento X-Line. En utilisant le régulateur de vitesse, j’ai pu aussi expérimenter un début de conduite automatisée sur l’autoroute en relâchant le volant. Mais un avertisseur sonore accompagné d’un message au centre d’information m’a vite fait remettre les mains sur le volant! A oui! En ce qui concerne la capacité de remorquage, ce Sorento turbo à traction intégrale serait capable de tirer 5000 livres ce qui est la moyenne dans ce segment des VUS.

Vient alors la question de la consommation. Mon calcul à la pompe m’a donné une moyenne de 10,03 l./100 km alors que l’ordinateur du véhicule indiquait 9,7 au tableau de bord. Dans la bonne moyenne. Évidemment, les performances sont toujours meilleures avec de l’essence Super quand il s’agit d’un moteur turbocompressé.  

Le Sorento se vend à un prix variant de 35 945 $ pour la version de base à plus de 49 500 $ pour un modèle élaboré comme la version X Line décrite ici.

Kia doit affronter une vive concurrence avec son nouveau Sorento. Dans son créneau, le Sorento doit se mesurer, entre autre, à des Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Volkswagen Atlas et Mazda CX-9 de ce monde sans compter les très populaires Dodge Durango et Ford Explorer de ce monde !

Ford lance une version Timberline de son Explorer

La mode est lancée. Autrefois, les constructeurs aimaient proposer des versions «sport» de leurs VUS. Même si ce mouvement est toujours d’actualité, la tendance va maintenant vers le look «aventurier» et la nouvelle version Timberline du Ford explorer en est un exemple parfait. Selon les études de Ford, semble-t-il que 56% des propriétaires d’Explorer seraient plus tentés d’une vie en plein air et hors des sentiers battus (j’ajouterais, COVID oblige) et ce serait à eux que la version Timberline serait dédiée. Selon moi, la tendance est moins évidente au Québec ou l’on se sert plus des motoneiges et des quads pour des excursions hors-route…

Enfin, Ford a vu à bien décorer son Explorer en Timberline qui se voit greffer des plaques protectrices sous le véhicule dont la suspension est légèrement relevée. Les pneus plus évidents deviennent alors des Bridgestone Dueler P265/65R18 et l’on remarque des crochets sous les pare-chocs avant et arrière au cas où…

Avec le quatre cylindres EcoBoost de 300 chevaux et la capacité de remorquage de 5300 livres, cet Explorer a un prix de départ de 50 799 $.

Les nouvelles voitures de la Coupe NASCAR enfin dévoilées.

Les amateurs de NASCAR les attendaient avec impatience, ces images des voitures de la Coupe NASCAR de l’année prochaine. Elles ont enfin été dévoilées. Portant sur des châssis-cadre (cages) pareils, la carrosserie de ces autos Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro et Toyota Camry sera désormais faite de plastique renforcé. Toujours mues par des V8 à culbuteurs d’un maximum de 5,8 litres de 550 à 670 chevaux, ces nouvelles voitures largement inspirées de celles de la série australienne Super V8 auront désormais une suspension arrière indépendante, une boîte-pont séquentielle, une direction à crémaillère (enfin) et des jantes BBS de 18 pouces avec pneus Goodyear de nouvelle conception. Les changements sont nombreux (le pilote est désormais plus au centre de la voiture pour sa protection) mais l’auto devra demeurer symétrique alors que la quantité de voitures par pilote sera limitée par NASCAR. «On» veut réduire les coûts de la série!

Vous remarquerez que les nouvelles autos de la Coupe ressemblent nettement plus à leurs versions de production mais on ne peut plus parler de «stock car» au sens propre du mot. Décidemment, NASCAR se rapproche de plus des séries internationales de course automobile et c’est ce que souhaitent les dirigeants de la série qui voudraient bien y attirer d’autres marques dont Dodge ou encore les Hyundai, Volkswagen et autres noms du monde de l’automobile. Ce sera un excitant dossier à suivre…
