Starlight Express Electric Headcanons Part 2 (Feat. Charge the Music Coach OC)

I had fun with these last time, so I’m gonna have more fun and write some more :) Featuring a bit of Greased Lightning because I will go down with this ship.

- The Electrics have a rotation on who makes the food when people are hungry so nobody complains. They also have a rotation for who picks the video-games/movies during late nights. Joule, Electra and Charge will 9 times out of 10 order delivery of some kind on their turn for food because they suck at cooking lol

- Greaseball can and will be dragged into the chaos if Electra wants him to be there. Doesn’t matter what it is, sex, cuddle-piles, movie nights, if Lexi wants him to join in then GB will be joining in. Whenever he’s dragged in Electra will always cling to him and it takes a lotta convincing to share the Diesel with those who want him lmao

- Purse, Joule and Charge regularly tease GB, they find him appealing. Volta is mixed on the matter, while Wrench and Krupp are just accepting (but they don’t despise him, not anymore).

- Whenever Greaseball comes over to the suite he gets to pick the movie by default. He has good taste in movies though so nobody minds. Sometimes he’ll bring one or two others from the Apollo Victoria Trainyard that the group likes and they’ll end up picking instead (though never more than 2 guests with him, to avoid overcrowding the Electrics).

- 95% of the time all 7 of them will dogpile and sleep together. They either sleep in Electra’s huge bed, or altogether on the couch in the suite living room. They’re so used to being together the whole time both physically and mentally that they’re scared of being alone even at night (unless they have to be because someone got sick or something).

- Joule likes to lay on top of everyone else when they dogpile and act as a heated blanket for everyone. Volta helps regulate everyone’s heat so she doesn’t melt them all on accident.

- Charge is very affectionate with Wrench and looks up to her as both a caregiver and a protective lover. 

- Joule will sit in Volta’s lap when she’s bored and demanding attention. Volta will never complain about this (she actually really likes it). Purse does the same when he wants attention from Krupp (he also doesn’t complain lol).

- Wrench likes baking in her off-time. She’s teaching Krupp how to do it so he can spoil Purse some more. She and him get along well since they’re the parents in charge of shepherding everyone else lmao

- Joule and Charge are the two least likely to complain about getting dirty. Wrench is okay with it (as a Repair Truck she’s had to deal with messy crashes sadly) as is Krupp and Volta, and Purse and Electra utterly DESPISE getting dirty.

- After the events of the Championship, the Electrics start to spend some more of their freetime around the AV Trainyard and mellow out slightly (their Commission-approved suite is pretty nearby anyway). Nowadays the others of the Trainyard will recognise their whirrs and hums of hello when they arrive for a visit.

- Charge gets along well with the Coaches of the Apollo Victoria Trainyard due to being an Electric Coach herself. She likes to chat with Dinah the most and watch her make food even if she doesn’t entirely understand what she’s doing to make said food.

- After a long and/or stressful day sometimes the Electrics will connect to the internet to just look at memes, funny videos, or animal-related videos to lift their spirits a bit. Sometimes they’ll send memes to each other via the Frequency and laugh together for an hour or two.

- Charge can kick ass at DDR and rhythm games due to her natural music talent. Electra is a close second, followed by surprisingly Volta. Krupp is also no slouch, not that he’ll join in unless Purse makes him.

- Teamup nicknames include: Crash and Burn (Charge/Joule), Freezerburn (Joule/Volta), Parental Unit (Wrench/Krupp), Cold Shock (Volta/Electra), Good Cop, Gay Cop (Krupp/Purse), Livewire (Electra/Charge), and Cold Cash (Volta/Purse).

I routinely endeavor into the Costa Rican jungle to study toxin frogs. These little men don’t make their own toxin; rather, they get toxic substances from the termites and ants they consume. When the mom has tadpoles, she feeds them unfertilized eggs with the very same toxin inside. I wished to see whether this safeguards the tadpoles versus predators such as snakes and spiders.

We evaluated snakes in the laboratory, however tropical banana spiders act unusual in captivity. You need to observe them by themselves grass—the jungle at night. You shine a headlamp around, and their eyes show a blue shimmer. Then you lure them with a tadpole on a stick and hope they don’t run at you. They’re huge—the size of tennis balls—and hairy, with poisonous fangs. I keep 40 snakes in my workplace and don’t terrify quickly, however something about the method these spiders relocation made me panic. I kept going crazy and unintentionally tossing the bait tadpoles into the bushes. Ultimately, I needed to hire trainees to assist me.

It ends up, the spiders often get harmful tadpoles, however they constantly let them go. That raised brand-new concerns about how they notice victim is poisonous. Regrettably, discovering responses will take a lot more spiders.

Can have a hard time falling asleep due to excess energy and nerves, but once he does he sleeps very soundly. Is the little spoon always, wants to be held, snug and secure. Cannot sleep by himself

Actually feels rather dumb that he doesn't know that much outside of his own culture, he feels very sheltered and alone when he's not with his components for support

He has one love language/gesture for each component and makes sure to show them that every so often

Has a huge suite back at the commission he works for, with separate rooms for all the components and also his own room with a bed big enough for all of them to sleep in if they want to. He has *a lot* of stuff and can sometimes be a little messy and scatterbrained, just putting things wherever (much to Wrench and Volta's chagrin), but he tries to keep it orderly!

Doesn't know shit about romance lmao, but he really tries once he starts his relationship with GB. Takes a lot of advice from Purse and Krupp lmao Sometimes Volta and Joule as well, but Krupp and Purse are the designated Married Couple in their family lol

Racers don't really have families the way other railfolk do, they're just bred and "manifactured", but he has a Dam named Borialis and a Sire that i haven't named yet cause he's not important lmaooo

The Components are his real family, forged and bonded over the years, and Wrench is the closest thing he'd call a mother

Outside of the components he doesn't really have any friends, just the occasional co-worker and hook-up. But after he gets with GB he'll form some strong bonds with people at Apollo Victoria :)

- Electra has actually sired a Racer, but he has never met them and has no desire to meet them either. It's nothing personal, it's just how the Commission works (and he has literally no parental bone in his whole body)

- Despite what it may look like, Electra hates crowds and easily gets overwhelmed and overstimulated. He loves to be admired and worshipped, but not cornered

Electra slowly grows to love only sleeping with GB tho, his big and warm frame enough to get him comfortable

- Electra's preferred nickname is Lex, but GB calling him Lexi is his secret favourite one. Sometimes GB calls him Ellie, when they play around a little more with his gender and fluidity. He doesn't mind at all when Greaseball calls him "my girl" or similar, but prefers Lexi over Ellie lmao. No one, other than GB uses Ellie, it is forbidden.

- Electra has the natural scent of ozone and rain, but uses a lot of different perfumes, often with fresh and clean scents

He once had one on that smelled of cotton flower, GB found it so relaxing that he fell asleep on top of him. Electra found that less relaxing.

- Greaseball has been to some of the races and watched Electra compete. He quickly got very vocal and enthusiastic and had to be escorted out tho. Electra was both a little embarrassed, and also a little smitten that he got so passionate with seeing him race

- Relationships between different engines are *very* rare, and a lot of Electra's "friends" in the Racing-world look down on him for starting something with a "crude and dirty diesel".

The commission he works for is also not very happy, but as long as they keep it strictly childfree, he can do whatever.

- Opposite this, the railyard doesn't really think that a fancy Racer belongs there, and Control has been very firm that GB under no circumstances get distracted again, and potentially injuring himself even more

Greaseball, as the leader, has to keep up a good facade and image, so him starting a courtship with an electric isn't really helping his case

When Electra first entered, Greaseball was pissed at his arrogance, flashiness, and cockyness, but also extremely attracted to his gracefulness and beauty (tho he didn't know it at first and just mistook it for anger lmao) Electra was attracted to GB from the start, but pissed when he challenged him and took his components. But he tried to flirt and tease for the rest of the race, with little success

Did any of their friends or family want them to get together? Not really lmao The components think little of Greaseball and mostly think he's dumb and wasted energy. But they support Electra nonetheless, naturally. Dinah is very keen on getting them together tho, GB's apparent change and slow but steady growth a clear sign that his thing with Electra is good.

Who felt romantic feelings first? Greaseball. He's dealt with love and relationships before, and despite him being a bit of a "skirtchaser", he wears his heart on his sleeve. He falls fast and hard, even if he doesn't want to admit it

What was their first kiss like? Well.... Chaotic, just after the crash, Electra reached over and pulled GB in. He wanted to tease but he was also completely done with this shit and wanted to show his interest. GB doesn't remember much, but he remembers the kiss and that he liked it very much

Volta doesn't really care for him, Wrench despises him and Krupp is just tired lol. They're a little stiff around each other at first, but then forms a very sweet friendship. He doesn't care much for Tank, Gear and Lube. They exist and are dumb.

Who takes the lead in social situations? Well, that depends on situation. Electra is very talented at being social. But actually rather hates it if it's not from a distance. He thrives in attention, but isn't that talented with smalltalk or just being generally pleasant. Greaseball is a leader and charismatic, so he's very much a presence that people want to be in and talk in.

At the poles, snow doesn’t melt; it accumulates in layers of ice that stretch back in time like tree rings. I study particles trapped in these layers to see how climate has changed.

First, my team gathers ice cores from the coldest climes. In Greenland, we traverse thousands of miles on snowmobiles to reach different collection sites, surrounded by nothing but flat, white beauty. Then we drill for samples that range from a couple hundred feet to more than a mile long and date back up to 50,000 years.

Greenland cores preserve specks of dust from Chinese deserts and sea salt from big storms in the North Atlantic. But there are so few particles—some are one in a trillion—that it’s like trying to find a postage stamp somewhere in New York City. We melt a cross-section of ice and use a special instrument to count individual flecks.

These tell us what the climate used to be like. For example, winds had to be strong to carry larger dust motes thousands of miles. Little differences in the weights of oxygen and hydrogen in water molecules tell us about the temperature when they fell as snow thousands of years ago—and how that compares to rising temperatures today.

Fact: Stew from a polar bear liver will kill you in a most gruesome way

When early Arctic explorers managed to kill a polar bear and cook up its organs, they were in for a nasty surprise. After the meal, several of the crew grew sick, unable to sleep, suffering from pounding headaches and sick to their stomachs. The next day, the skin of several men started to peel off their body, first in patches, then from head to foot. The men died with their flesh exposed to the frigid air.

When medical researchers got their hands on a polar bear from an expedition to Greenland in the 1940s, they found the bear’s liver was bursting with Vitamin A, nearly 60 times higher than the amount found in a human. We all need a certain amount of Vitamin A to keep our bodies healthy, but our systems can only handle so much. Too much of the vitamin over months or years would damage our livers and increase the pressure on our brains. A massive overload all at once would swiftly kill us—but not before making all of our skin peel off.

Fact: Our obsession with chlorinated water bubbled over in 1989

True crime stories are everywhere, from hit podcasts like Criminal and Serial to must-watch Netflix series like Making a Murderer. And yet, every single one of these series has overlooked the Chlorine Five. Until now.

The story goes like this: In Wildwood Crest, New Jersey in 1989, there was an outbreak of fecal coliform bacteria. The public health authority closed down several beaches, because swimming in poop, at least in high enough concentrations, is downright dangerous. But a group of local business owners weren’t having it. So according to the initial report from The New York Times, they lugged chlorine tablets to the beach and dumped about 100 gallons worth of chlorine into the Atlantic Ocean, before someone stopped them.

The chemical dump and subsequent court appearance made national news at the time. But the incident, which one chemical historian sees as a watershed moment in the “summer love affair between chlorine and swimming,” has largely been forgotten. As New York City ramps up a new project to chlorinate a contaminated waterway, it’s as good a time as ever to revisit the Chlorine Five, and the perils and promise of this popular chemical.

Fact: Your airport might house a secret toilet—a secret drug toilet

John F. Kennedy International Airport has a special toilet sequestered away from prying eyes. But no matter how many jet-lagged tourists are holding up the line of the public commode, you should be glad you’re not visiting the less-trafficked facilities. Because to get there, you have to show signs that you may be trafficking drugs—in your stomach.

Yes, JFK (and an unknown number of other airports and prisons) have toilets specially designed to fish packets of cocaine and heroine out of your poop.

“Everything they pass goes into … a hermetically sealed agitation unit with a viewing panel,”John Baker, managing director of Drugloo UK Ltd, told the CBC of his company’s “Drugbuggy Ranger” in 2016. “Water and detergent sprays come into the agitation area, basically blow away all the debris. So you’re left with whatever item you’re looking for which is all nice and clean and smells kind of pleasant.”

Once someone swallows or stuffs drugs into their person (you can learn everything—and I mean everything—you ever wanted to know about that process right here) waiting for the illicit substances to reemerge is a dangerous game. Hosts will generally do things like live on broth and take anti-diarrheal medication to keep things from passing too quickly, but that can mean days or weeks spent waiting at the other end. Even impatient law enforcement can’t speed things along with laxatives; any sudden bowl movement could cause packets to rupture, which would be very, very bad—most packets contain above-lethal doses, and a body can carry hundreds.

In most cases, suspects spend a couple weeks doing their business (either in special toilets or in bedpans for unlucky individuals to sort through manually) before x-rays confirm their entire haul is safely excreted. Of course, there are outliers: one young man recently went 47 days in captivity without pooping, and refused medical treatment until officers released him. He was later brought back in on related charges, but his keepers said they felt an ethical obligation to make sure he pooped first. Don’t try to follow his example: it is rare, but quite possible, to die from constipation-related conditions. Your bowel can perforate and lead to infections in the abdominal cavity, or the sheer pressure of your fecal buildup can put you into cardiac arrest.
