There are few things I love more on the SiIvaGunner channel than the phenomena I like to call "call & response" rips. These are, put simply, rips connected to one another through a sort of dialogue - an obvious example of this is with He4rt4che and 4SGOR3, two intertwined projects by the same ripper released right alongside one another. Yet these projects have also be used to, in effect, pay tribute to the works of other rippers on the channel: Shiny Smily TALE, for instance, saw Ellie53 pay respects to a rip made four whole years prior by Sarvéproductions. There's also one of my all-time personal favorites for silly sentimental reasons, Violet Snow Memories, which remakes and expands upon a relatively obscure rip made *SEVEN* years prior by a ripper who's no longer actively part of the team. Without having any knowledge of the behind-the-scenes behind their production, these rips end up feeling like true expressions of love between rippers, being creatively fulfilling projects in their own right whilst directing attention toward rips and rippers that they cherish.
Yet with the two rips featured today, Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) and Aqua Star (Kirby Super Star Arrangement), we run into a somewhat unique scenario, that I haven't personally seen all too often on the channel: a sort of combination of two of the example scenarios described. These two rips were both made by the same ripper, Alan, who's both a friend of the blog and has been contributing on and off for the channel since late into Season 1, still being active today eight years later in Season 8. And therein is what makes this pair of rips so interesting: Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) released all the way back in Season 3, while Aqua Star (Kirby Super Star Arrangement) came out just shy of three months ago back in June of Season 8 - yet are both playing off of the same core idea. Even six years after its release, the core idea of Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) seems to have stuck with the guy, and all this time later he finally decided to expand on the concept further, out of no other reason than his own personal investment in the concept. Six years of waiting, six years of experience gained - let's see where this all takes us.
The soundscape of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is one I've made no secret of my affection for, most notably with Aquadial just outright being an all-time favorite rip of mine, but even with more out-there bizarre projects like Kirby Joins the Circus!, they all manage to have an indescribable appeal that comes just from how beautiful Kirby 64 as a whole sounds. The channel and internet as a whole is filled with tributes paid to the game's soundtrack, yet Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) takes a direction similar to the previously covered Mt. Dedede (extended) - choosing to inject Kirby music, into other Kirby music. The Kirby franchise is itself already filled with homages paid to its legacy music, endlessly rearranging its past work, and so Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) fits in with the rest of the series' soundtracks like a glove. Float Islands in particular is a pretty crucial piece of music for the franchise, originating from the very first game in the series, being remixed in countless games, and most notably laying the groundwork for the franchise's beloved Rest Area theme, later arranged and reused for the Super Smash Bros. series and itself featured in beloved rips like Me and the rest area of the melee here, singing, "Where'd you go?". It's Jun Ishikawa's knack for catchy, soothing and high-tempo composition distilled into just one track - the kind of song that just SOUNDS like Kirby ought to sound, no matter what form it takes.
It should come as no surprise that Alan knocks the arrangement out of the park with Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) - Aqua Star, the track being used as the basis, already takes cues from Float Islands in certain snippets of its arrangement, and Alan is able to leverage that connection into a sound experience that sounds damn near effortlessly like an authentic Ishikawa arrangement. The lead instruments chosen follow along with Aqua Star very nicely, the brass sounds as authentically "Kirby 64" as always, the percussion is as lovely as Float Islands' arrangements always are - it's an incredibly solid rip, that even back in 2018 turned some heads with commenters denoting how surprising it was to see just outright wholesale remixes put onto SiIvaGunner. Of course, this was not something new - we've had rips like Turn On Your SEGA Genesis and Just Enjoy Yourself as far back as Season 1 - yet to see a ripper like Alan play along with Kirby series' tradition of celebrating past music so authentically was no doubt part of what made this rip stick out so much - many didn't even recognize that Float Islands wasn't originally in Kirby 64 and just thought the rip was an unedited reupload of music from the game!
Of course, this was nevertheless a rip from Season 3, six years ago - the channel was still somewhat undergoing growing pains, shedding the anything-goes wild west of Season 1 and gradually turning into something with a higher bar of quality. Despite my love for it, there are still some slight oddities present in Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement), indications of its status as, ultimately, a hobby project for a shitpost channel. And that's why I find Aqua Star (Kirby Super Star Arrangement) to be such a cool release - it saw Alan return to this old rip idea, now within the context of SiIvaGunner in 2024, part of this team that's learned so much about ripping for so many different games, that continues to find new ways to impress with every passing month with everything from Last Freight-train Night to Thwâmpröck Desert. In my eyes, Aqua Star (Kirby Super Star Arrangement) is right at home here - instead of rearranging one of Kirby's oldest legacy songs into the soundscape almost impossible to make sound bad, the rip feels like a far more daunting task in doing the opposite, taking a song built upon that distinct soundscape and attempting to recreate it within the confines of a far older game, in Kirby Super Star for the Super Nintendo.
Yet Alan pulls this endeavor off with flying colors! The thing I immediately noticed, compared to Kirby Super Star's take on Float Islands, is the percussion: in Aqua Star (Kirby Super Star Arrangement), it sounds ever so slightly...dreamier, less heavy - perhaps that's my ears playing tricks on me, but I get the sense whilst listening that Alan put in a hell of a lot of effort to recapture the magically sparkly feel that Kirby 64's music so often holds. You hear this in the lead melody instruments used as well - the primary lead is the same beautiful one used as the lead in Super Star's Float Islands, yet it's occasionally swapped out for a less-used instrument from that same track, there only used for accenting the end of certain segments, but is used here for a wonderful back-and-fourth sound throughout the rip's runtime. On the whole, it's just a wonderfully tasteful, well-rounded arrangement without twists or surprises - a perfect response to the call placed back in 2018.
As I led this post off with, it's that back-and-fourth dynamic between rips that I found so utterly endearing about rips like these two. Yet the additional wrinkle that both works here were made by the SAME ripper gives it a distinctly different flavor, it goes from viewing two rippers pay each other loving respect to seeing one ripper grow in proficiency and ability over many years of honing their craft. As a result, while I find Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement) to be an absolutely wonderful piece in its own right, it was Alan's work on Aqua Star (Kirby Super Star Arrangement) that enamored me - to see that progression of a ripper in such a direct, yet at once indirect, way, was an incredibly fascinating listening experience. Alan shows no sign in slowing down in his contributions to the channel, and with rips of this caliber, I can't wait to see what the future holds for the guy.

so, i was wondering about that mirror AU. first off i wanna say, i really like the designs. but i did have a few questions.
So first off, for Magolor, you say he's basically blind but it looks like he has an eye in his mouth like the original soul version. Is that not an eye or am I just going crazy?
Secondly, You mentioned how Adeline is the most normal of them. So are all the characters basically insane and if so, how would you say they rank on the sanity scale?
And finally, and I just have to ask this being a fan of both these characters, but you mentioned that Magolor has someone to help guide him, being blind. Is there by any chance that this seeing-eye jester you mentioned happens to be Marx?
ohhh hi!! tysm for asking about this! i'm really glad people took an interest in those mirror world counterparts, it means a lot :]]
ok, to start, i'm gonna talk about adeleine and sanity :D (since the two magolor questions tie in with each other and bc i like talking about her)
Tumblr media
here is the "sanity" scale! i put this in quotes because they are all a little bit insane in their own ways <3
adeleine is the "most normal" here, not because she is mentally sane, but because she basically lives the same life she had pre-DL3 (living alone in cloudy parks, surrounded by her living discarded WIPs, having various temper tantrums). obviously, she still plays a role in the mirror-world version of 64:CS, but she let the whole "shiver star oh my god. earth is dead. humans are gone and i'm the only one left" thing completely take over her psyche. she stays up in the clouds, desperately trying to remember life on earth, and maybe– just maybe, convince herself that she's not alone.
magolor is doing surprisingly okay here?? like, sure he barely managed to scrape his way out of purgatory, and now has the remains of his wrongdoings etched into his body, but he's taking it like a champ 👍👍 he denies what happened to him was his fault (even when it totally was), and because of it, his AD experience was ramped up to 11. he feels no remorse for his betrayal, and instead no longer fights kirby simply because he gave up trying. he's also got the whole..eye and crown thing going on. so.
elfilin is next, with him basically being confined to the Pickle Jar. he's trapped in his own mind (forever wandering the isolated isles) and just kinda floats there, waiting for something to save him from an eternity of chaos. i put him above adeleine because of the situation that leads him there in the first place. since the initial splitting of elfilis/elfilin was a lot more messy, it means that they're stuck in a yin-yang scenario. instead of completely good, elfilin is mostly good, and that sliver of darkness increased his susceptibility to fecto forgo, drawing him to lab discovera. the beast pack captures him and tries to fuse him with forgo, but because of the discordance, it's taking a lot longer. the "good" part of elfilin hangs on, trapped in his dreams and slowly losing his grip, which is represented by his constant crying of the blood cell-like orbs from chaos elfilis' fight.
ribbon is. not doing so hot here. not only is she on the verge of breaking (mentally and physically), she has essentially isolated herself to complete an impossible mission. since the crystal was smashed into thousands upon thousands of pieces, she'll likely spend the rest of her life searching for each shard. she wallows in guilt and self-depreciation (even though it's not her fault!!), and is also fighting off dark matter possession at any given point. her will is strong, but how long can she last?
okay!! magolor time!!
Tumblr media
magolor's seeing-eye jester is indeed marx! (though he will kill you if you call him that) while mirror-marx is even less of a good choice to befriend than normal marx, their friendship still upholds :]
while yeah, magolor does have a huge-ass eye in his mouth, it's not him that's doing the seeing. the visual information goes straight to the master crown, if this makes sense.
the master crown's power has dulled, now forming a symbiotic relationship with him. magolor provides the crown with a body to host, and the crown's magic allows him survive AD, basic perception (he's not gonna run into a tree anytime soon, but can't read or see faces), and a huge ego boost.

Welcome back!! Also, I’d LOVE to hear that pitch idea 👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To get this out of the way first, when it comes to hypoethetical Kirby movie ideas, I often hear things like "Return to Dream Land would be the best game to adapt to a movie!"
I...disagree.
It's a really nice story, with an intriguing beginning, middle, and an infamous last act twist. But you actually need to understand what kind of character Kirby et al are, their world, and Kirby's themes before you can really understand what makes RtDL's (and Magolor's) story effective. Because of that, it's not a good introduction.
So, which game would I adapt?
Ah, see, here's the thing. I think the best way to handle it would be to combine several plots together! For this, I'm loosely adapting Kirby's Dream Land 2/3, Kirby Super Star, AND Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. That's right! All of 'em!
Let's dive in!
--
We open on a colorful storybook-esque backdrop, with a young girl narrating to us about the peaceful Planet Pop Star and the story of "Kirby of the Stars", a mysterious traveler from afar with even more mysterious abilities!
...The camera pans back to show us an excited Adeleine showing off her notebook full of idea sketches to curious Kirby, who speaks (yes, speaks - all throughout the movie, in fact) that they're not certain why, exactly, they're being made out to be the hero of this story Adeleine is conceptualizing in the first place. Adeline points out that Kirby is fascinating and exciting (and lovable! :cheek squish:) and that more people should know about them!
Kirby replies that they're happy with the life they have right now, panning out to show Kirby's house in Whispy Wood’s forest, as well as the rest of the animal friends. Also, "...isn't it lunch time?"
But lunch is put on hold as Coo points out some suspicious activity in the sky. We switch POVs to Ribbon, frantically clutching her crystal while being chased by vague shadow resembling Dark Matter Swordsman and a handful of Dark Matters in tow. In desperation she attempts to activate the crystal as they near in, causing a sonic boom type effect that rocks the land below, sending bits of light and dark debris everywhere. Ribbon goes flying too.
Kirby and the gang find her, where she wakes up to explain to them all in a panic that "...Zero is coming!" and their whole planet is in grave danger. She answers only few brief questions about where she came from and who Zero is before demanding directions to the ruler of their kingdom. She can't waste time here. She needs a hero!
They (some of them swallowing their doubts) point her in the direction of Castle Dedede and she flies off before they can even ask if she wants anyone to "...accompany her?" (Kirby offers to go after her anyway, but everyone kind of groans at the idea of actually, you know, TALKING to Dedede and puts forward they idea they should get back to lunch, something that immediately wins Kirby over.)
A bat-like shadow flies out from the trees just as something gooey that had fallen from the sky in that explosion begins to rattle from the inside of one of Adeleine's paint buckets.
We follow the shadow of the bat-like creature across the landscape of Dream Land till he swoops in for a landing in front of Castle Dedede... revealing himself as Meta Knight.
He's given a friendly but harried greeting by a certain Waddle Dee. Meta Knight is interrupted from asking about the current status of things in the castle by the appearance of Marx, the king's jester, who cracks a few jokes at Meta's expense. Meta shows some anger at Marx who plays at being threatened right as King Dedede arrives on scene. Dedede looks for all intents to be the villainous foil, self-absorbed, egotistical (easily manipulated) and agreeing without thinking too hard about it to everything Marx says. (Even when that thing is mocking himself.) Meta interrupts to remind them all that there are more important matters at hand. That's when either Ribbon arrives at the castle or - we hear that she's already arrived.
Back in the forest, lunch turns into comical hijinks as the group discovers the weird life-form in Adeleine's paints. It hops out, spooks everyone badly, including itself, until Kirby tries inhaling it to stop it from running - only to immediately spit it out. "It tastes...Gooey." (Gooey repeats the word, finding in it a descriptor...and, a name?)
The gang wonder if this weird creature could be the Dark Matter Ribbon spoke of, or even Zero itself! Gooey can't provide any answers about who or what they are (and is still learning the concept of speech) but the forest denizens are able to put off their suspicions thanks to their positive experiences with Kirby, who was also an outsider once. Kirby and Gooey bond quickly over that, with Kirby showing Gooey that just because they don't know what they are, that doesn't make them so strange. Kirby has strange abilities too - showing off a few Copy Abilities too, like using Fire to cook up some baked yams for everyone.
This happy meet-and-greet is interspersed with scenes of Ribbon now catching the Castle Gang up on her story. That "Zero" is a force of pure negativity that has threatened countless planets, most recently consuming her home of Ripple Star, its queen, and all of her friends. She alone escaped with Ripple Star's treasure, the Crystal of the Ancients. The Queen told her to seek out heroes who could unlock its power and stop Zero but... King Dedede stops her there. She was right in coming to see him. The greatest, toughest, bravest "hero" in all of Pop Star. (Dee, Marx, and even Meta Knight all share an eye roll at this declaration.) Let Zero come! The Great King Dedede will stop them in their tracks! (...And get all the fame!)
...Ahem, to start summarize things a little faster (so that this doesn't turn into an hour and a half long read) Ribbon very quickly starts to have her doubts about King Dedede's fitness as a hero (and her choice to come to him for help) as he blatantly ignores her actual warnings to focus on the celebration when he finishes saving the day. The rest of the Castle gang sympathize with her doubts and all agree that this is pretty classic Dedede. Marx and Waddle Dee especially have their gripes with the King's rule, except that we begin to see more and more that Marx, who plays the adorable, long-suffering jester of an idiotic, despotic king when anyone's eyes are on him, is snide to Waddle Dee in the shadows and has been manipulating Dedede into making himself even more of a big useless oaf that no one respects. (Not that Dedede is without flaws, Waddle Dee confesses, but he buys into Marx's false praise too much and doesn't realize he's become something of a laughing stock.)
Ribbon's mention that Zero's agents chased her here end up leading to Gooey being considered a dangerous target to be arrested on sight, just as Kirby and Adeleine take Gooey into town to show them around/teach them more about Dream Land/maybe stir some memories or just good experiences?
Meta Knight, who is sent on this task, catches them in town, despite Adeleine and Kirbys' attempts to disguise Gooey, and the Forest Group and the Castle Group end up clashing, as Dedede wants to splat "the evil Zero" with his hammer in front of everyone, but Kirby insists that Gooey isn't Zero, Gooey is a friend and wouldn't hurt anyone. The only way to solve this argument...?
...Set up a giant arena in front of Castle Dedede and challenge Kirby to a big public tournament for the right to keep Gooey! Poor unprepared Waddle Dee is sent in first, providing a few moments of future friendship bonding for the pair. Next is Meta Knight, who uses this mostly as an exercise to test finally Kirby in combat, giving him several grim warnings during the fight.
Despite Meta seemingly outmatching our puff in every way, Kirby surprises him, inhaling Meta's sword and landing a shocking blow that cracks his mask. Kirby is ever so briefly surprised to see that Meta Knight...looks just like they do. Meta quickly vanishes before a shocked audience can see. (Marx grins.) A stunned Dedede, who didn't expect Meta to lose, quickly recovers to face Kirby in the final round for possession of Gooey and the right to the title of Dream Land's hero.
Ribbon, who has been watching Kirby closely throughout the tournament, and remembering their offers of assistance from the very beginning, has realized they're the one who fits her ideals of a hero. (And the Crystal begins to glow...)
King Dedede, for all that he fails to impress as a king, is one heck of a fighter and proves a pretty even match for Kirby! Refusing to be outdone, he manages to use his build to his advantage to mimic Kirby's own unique abilities. (This is partly because he's giving it his all, unlike Meta Knight, who was holding back.) But a shriek mid-way through the fight alerts both combatants to trouble and brings the duel to a sudden close.
You guessed it! Marx has turned on everyone. With Meta Knight out of the picture temporarily, he's caged Ribbon and snagged the crystal for himself. He gives a stunned Dedede a verbal kick in the ego, pointing out every one of his flaws that everyone was too dull to call him out on till he showed up and says Zero can have this planet.
"...For now!"
Its time for the gang to regroup to chase after Marx and get Ribbon back! Alas, King Dedede is feeling defeated after that verbal smackdown until Waddle Dee steps up to give him a much needed reality check / pep talk. Its true, King Dedede wasn't the best king till now. Marx was kind of right about that - if unnecessarily mean about it. But he's still THEIR king. And if he tries, Dedede can still be a "Great" King! Kirby chimes in too. They had a really good time with that fight, if only they weren't fighting over possession of one of Kirby's friends...Okay, NOW Dedede's motivated and on board!
...Which is good because an army of Dark Matter has begun to flood the skies above! There's no time left! Zero approaches! A freshly-masked Meta Knight returns to unite the frightened, under-trained Dees in the defense of Dream Land against the Dark Matter forces - something our main Dee helps rally them for - while Kirby and the others go to rescue Ribbon!
(At a certain point in the battle with the Dark Matter, our main Waddle Dee takes an injury protecting another Dee. Meta Knight compliments the Dee's bravery and maybe giving him some combat pointers, all while bandaging him up with a scrap of blue cloth.)
The rest of the group catches up to Marx as he's in the middle of trying to use the crystal for...something mysterious. There's some sequel tease dialogue there that Marx refuses to elaborate on to "...a couple of idiots." Kirby and Dedede team up to fight him as Adeleine and Gooey work to rescue Ribbon in the background, away from Marx's attention. Kirby and Marx have a mid-battle chat, Marx chiding Kirby's naive ideals after Kirby affirms that there's nothing weird about befriending Dark Matter and that they'd even be friends with someone like Marx. Marx reacts with disgust at this. At Ribbon's suggestion, Kirby copies Mirror from a broken bit of Marx's wings Dedede cracked earlier and tricks the trickster, allowing Dedede to smack him so hard, he sends him flying off into the stars.
That's all done with but they still have Zero to contend with. Dedede announces he has to return to the front to help Meta Knight and the Dees as "...That's what a true king ought to do. Right?" Adeleine goes with him to help with the evacuation. Leaving Kirby and Ribbon (and Gooey too, who, after hearing Kirby's speech about friendship to Marx, is able to reveal their mock matter form before Ribbon) to face Zero with the  reawakened and fully charged (Huh. Did Marx prove...useful?) Ancient Crystal.
Zero (with traits of both Zero Two and some oblique references to Void) is unlike anyone Kirby and co has ever faced. They do not talk, for one thing, leaving Kirby's greatest strength, their empathy and willingness to reach a hand out to anyone, all seem meaningless in the face of pure negative emotion.
Plus, fighting them brings both Kirby and Gooey face to face with their fears (or un-asked questions, till now) as to just what they are. But a pep talk from Ribbon ("I KNOW what you are! I've seen you help everyone you come across. No matter whether they've done anything to earn it or not!") and Meta Knight's wise words the tournament comes back to Kirby at a key point in the fight.
In the end, the battle of "where you come from" vs "what your actions say about you" ends in a victory for our heroes. Zero is defeated, the day is saved, Gooey is considered a welcome resident of Dream Land by all, Kirby has some new friends, Dedede is taking steps down the road to real leadership (and won't stop hounding Kirby to a rematch to find out who really is the strongest) and Ripple Star and the fairies are freed from the darkness!
There are questions, of course. Still mysteries to be had. But food, friendship, and nap time are most important, for right now.
The post-credits stinger? ...Marx's unconscious body floating through space. Up until he bumps up against the hull of a very familiar looking ship that is. (1)
---
Anyway, that's basically the idea!
My goal was to try and introduce as many familiar Kirby characters and conflicts as possible, even if that meant reworking the context they originally appeared in, while also trying hard to avoid an overdone "origin story" movie feel.
King Dedede doesn't steal all the food (although there could be a line about him doing that) but we see that he is too self-obsessed to be a good king atm. Except that he has a heroic enough streak deep down that he DOES know the difference between right and wrong.
Marx is still a tricky traitor who knows more than he lets on but is more concerned about selfishly getting his way than the damage to others his ambitions could cause. Zero is still a frightening, unfathomable, otherworldly evil with vague connections to Kirby.
Adeleine and the animal friends play the role of Kirby's supportive family and represent everything that's good and comfy about Planet Pop Star. Ribbon is an at-times heroine-in-distress who still knows what she needs and can also hold her own when the chips are down.
Gooey is the cute, wanna-protect-them fish-out-of-water character for us to examine/learn about both Kirby and Pop Star with. (Bandanna) Waddle Dee still has their sassy attitude while beginning an arc that would grow with each successive appearance. Meta Knight is cool, intelligent, tactical, but always mysterious.
Now...
I know that not a lot happens TO Kirby directly in this pitch but...Kirby is a character who stays pretty consistent throughout the series. We don't really have a strong ground for saying "In the early days, Kirby was more like this..." (outside of things like their rash decision to blame Dedede in Adventure and Squeak Squad) so I freely admit... Kirby does not have a character arc here. Which could be considered a major flaw, where this to be a real film. Kirby could be considered a "boring, infallible hero." And I don't really have a rebuttal for that except that I personally wasn't that interested in using this experiment to deeply examine Kirby's flaws via the template journey ten thousand movie heroes have gone through (and Kirby has so few flaws anyway) as much as I was interested in exploring how Kirby's steadfastness manages to (positively) affect the those they meet and the world around them.
The other thing of course is that it’s not a very lore heavy treatment. Plenty of classic, even iconic stuff gets left out. Outside of the food-stealing thing, Dedede never gets possessed. They never go off planet. There’s no Galactic Nova outside a few easter eggs in the fight with Marx. No Star Rod or Fountain of Dreams. No Kracko, Kabula, or other bosses and enemies as anything more than background cameos. I mention adapting Super Star, but Dyna Blade and Wham Bam don't really play a part, so it's really just Milky Way Wishes. A movie with less ground to cover would have plenty of room for these individual elements to breathe, but when I first started thinking of this, I set myself a personal goal of seeing covering as much "Kirby" as I could in just three movies.
Other thoughts of mine...
I only hinted at Dark Matter Blade's appearance in the beginning summary without having a full role for them in the story. That's because... I couldn't decide. ^^; I did want to tie them to Gooey, but I also wanted Gooey there for the fight with Zero, when Dark Matter Blade would likely be leading the invasion of Pop Star. (And thus, probably have an awesome duel with Meta Knight??)
The whole thing is also a little jam-packed. But I honestly don't think these 3 (+) stories are as discordant as they might seem! Especially since putting them all together allows us to have a fuller cast with a nice spread of flaws, goals, skill sets, and attitudes. And yes, I ditch Adventure (even though I love Nightmare) but I think the stuff with the Fountain of Dreams could always be used as a flashback sequence in a sequel movie. Maybe to tie off the trilogy?
Anyway, for getting through all that, have a bonus sketch of what a potential movie poster might look like!
Tumblr media

(1) Speaking of trilogies / as for the stinger...
Not to go too much into it here, but the general plan in this hypothetical would be to try and get as many mainline stories into three (?) movies as possible. While I haven't QUITE worked out how to mix Planet Robobot, Adventure, Star Allies, and Forgotten Land cohesively (the science vs magic aspect of having Haltmann and Hyness as dual villains was intriguing though, and its possible to twist the HWC stuff to fit with the Beast Pack's activities while making Eflilis into Hyness's desired form of revenge was a bit poetic) but I did figure out much of the structure of movie two, which combines Squeak Squad, Return to Dream Land, and Triple Deluxe. (With a sprinkling of Amazing Mirror and Canvas Curse.)
Here, the Lor Starcutter crashes on Pop Star as per usual, only Magolor AND Taranza emerge from it. Magolor is an antiques dealer now ("ANCIENT" artifacts especially) and he and his ship were hired by Taranza as transport on a very important delivery mission for the "glorious" Queen Sectonia when they were attacked by the inter-galactic band of thieves known as The Squeaks, who stole their extremely important cargo! They require Kirby and the gang's help to get the ship fixed and put everything in order.
It's treachery left and right though, as the stolen cargo WASN'T the Dimensional Mirror, like Taranza had been told by Sectonia. Furthermore, the framed Squeak's were originally hired BY the queen (through Magolor!!) to steal the real treasure, the Master Crown, so she could claim it to secure her rule. But, say it with me now, everyone then gets triple crossed by Magolor, who steals the stolen Master Crown for himself. Because of course he does.
(And by this point, we know enough about Kirby and their feelings on friendship and forgiveness to know that they would of course be willing to try and help save Magolor, even after being betrayed, when Magolor's plan goes all sorts of wrong. ...You also get some call backs as Magolor's frightening transformation into Dark Matter can pull on some trauma of Kirby's for not being able to reach out and communicate with Zero. There's actual stakes now as Kirby needs to save him before he, too, falls beyond his reach!)

Kirby Mass Attack for the Nintendo DS is one of the cutest Kirby game's I've ever played! I have yet to play Squeak Squad to compare, so as of now it's high on my list of cute factor for Kirby next to Super Star Saga on 3DS and Kirby and the Crystal shards for the Nintendo 64 (I'll make a post of this one soon ☆)(ゝω·)v
If you've ever played Hey! Pikmin for the Nintendo 3DS, the mechanics of the game work pretty similarly. You basically go through side scrolling levels collecting as many Kirbys as you can find and collecting each medal, occasionally finding hidden things in the levels. You fight enemies and tackle obstacles by throwing the Kirbys with your stylus at the obstacle or enemy to attack and interact with.
The more Kirbys you have through the game, the better your chance at finding secrets, finding all the medals and having a higher score. This can be tricky if you're not careful and let the enemies kill the Kirbys, which can pose some trouble as the further you play the higher number of Kirbys will be required to progress on the map. This is similar to any Super Mario Bros game where you collect coins in the levels to progress.
It is a game purely played with the Stylus, though that may be a turn off for traditional Kirby fans, give this game a chance! I personally have played a good number of Kirby games, the first ever being Kirby and the Crystal shards for the Nintendo 64 when I was a kid. Then I got back into Kirby years later on the 3DS and onwards since. I've been playing Kirby games I never got the chance to play and Kirby Mass Attack is one of the first ones on that list - and I like it very much! The chill gameplay you can pick up and put down anytime paired with the cute visuals and music really make for a cozy, cute game. I think it's worth a try if you're a Kirby fan too, just to experience something different (ノ´▽`)ノ♪

Today, I finally finished my most recent run of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. This is one of the few first party Nintendo games I had yet to finish a play through of when I first bought my Everdrive, glad to finally have a complete file.
This was my first Kirby game. I was always aware of the character, but i'll be honest, USA commercials made him very off-putting. But I actually got first hand experience with him and a lot of other unfamiliar characters in Smash Bros. Kirby was a real stand out to me, so he was the first one I wanted to familiarize myself with, and I went to Blockbuster to rent Crystal Shards and beat it in a week.
Or so I thought. This game was also my first experience with multiple endings. A friend of mine said "yeah when the queen gave you that evil look I knew I had to get everything to fight that final boss" and I was like "...wait what?" ...he would then let me borrow his copy to see what he meant.
anyway, I don't know if this is my favorite Kirby game, that honor likely goes to either Superstar or Adventure. But I do think it's the most interesting, and has the best atmosphere. ( yes I know I talked mad trash about "low poly" and how it doesn't even compare to the pixel art games but I'll admit, there's a certain atmosphere those pixel art games can't match )
And the power mixing. That's such a cool idea. I remember hearing you'd be combining powers again in Star Allies and I was so let down when it was just elemental versions of power ups. They really should make a successor to this game. I'd say sequel, but the storyline this seemed like a pretty definitive end to the dark matter saga.
Anyway. Great game. Very charming. I'm running out of ideas on what to devote myself to next so I might just do Majora's Mask.

Kirby 64 was a bit better than I had thought it would be, given its age and the series' track record involving forced collectibles up to this point (side eyes Dreamland 3). I think what helps it is a very charming art style that actually works on the old N64 hardware, in addition to the ability to combine any two power ups together to make new abilities.
Adeleine, Waddle Dee, Dedede and Ribbon make for a cute batch of little companions for Kirby on his adventure throughout the cosmos. They were just present enough throughout the course of the game to feel like they were there the whole time, while at the same time they never overstayed their welcome when it came to their gimmicks and the game had plenty of room to let the littlest pink ball of joy and happiness spread his wings and soar.
The Crystal Shard collecting, as I was properly warned about before hand, was more annoying than it ever felt rewarding. Some required power ups you couldn't even get in that stage (and good luck magically knowing what those paint colors on the breakable walls mean), some were just... there, and some would appear in places where you had to do shit like 'Pick-a-Door' where you would be harshly punished for not being clairvoyant (or using save states religiously). Seriously, I shouldn't be punished for beating a mini boss by immediately dropping me down into the next area without warning before I can pick up a Shard, it's just bad game design in a game that otherwise oozes charm.
I can definitely see, however, why Crystal Shards has such a dedicated, vocal fan base who love it all these decades later. Even when I got irritated at the game I was still having fun, and I just kept having trouble keeping a smile off my face the whole time playing through it. With this I just have 4 mainline and 2 (3) more Kirby games to play this year for my Kirbython 2023 to be completed. (Amazing Mirror, Squeak Squad, Star Allies, Forgotten Land) (Rainbow Curse, Mass Attack) (I’m still debating on if I want to even bother finishing Tilt n’ Tumble) As someone who played the og GB game to death as a little girl (and also put in a healthy amount of time on Adventure as well back in the day), but just...never really finished many Kirby games throughout the years; it’s been an absolute joy and a blast to go through all of these Kirby games (most of them for the first time). (I meant to x-post my little ‘reviews’ here on Tumblr before now as well as on my forum that I hang out in but I kinda just, well, forgot. Once the Kirbython is complete I’m thinking I’ll do a series of posts just, gushing about Kirby and stuff in order to give my thoughts on the series as a whole)

Todays rip: 13/11/2023
BUSTER HAND
Season 4 Episode 1 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips Volume A
Ripped by Zoom
youtube
Yesterday's post on World Out There covered a very particular specialty by ripper Jamangar - arranging songs into the style of Undertale/Deltarune's music. The instrumentation and overall sound of Toby Fox's music is of course iconic, yet there's another half to the equation that's equally as fun to see played with - the distinct melodies and tunes that those instruments play part of!
I've explored this a bit in the past with kris gaming and SUNGORE, yet for as good as those are (SUNGORE especially, good fucking lord) they're missing that one key ingredient that I love to see in melody swaps: when the instrumentation used sounds like it could only ever be from that game. I feel like the N64 was home to a lot of these sorts of games, due to its lack of CD playback - the sampling used by developers to give their games that musical oomf needed to sound on par with what was on PlayStation and Saturn, has resulted in some of the most immediately-recognizable soundscapes in gaming. Be it Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards, or the topic of today's rip: Super Smash Bros, and BUSTER HAND.
Before Smash Bros. were to become known for its absolutely insane quantity of music and having people from all over the industry collaborate on contributing remixes, the original Super Smash Bros. already had such a striking soundscape, with instrumentation unlike anything I've heard since. The instruments only really sound vaguely like equivalents in the real world, occasionally trumpet-like, occasionally like marching drums, and many times something wholly its own. Final Destination carries that torch further than anything else in the game - its shredding guitars sounding almost like whirring meteors whizzing by in the distance, its bass so throughly un-bass-like, yet setting the scene althesame. With that rock-solid of a foundation, BUSTER HAND doesn't need to do more than it sets out to in order to be a distinct and lovely treat to the ears - every part of Deltarune's Rude Buster is here and accounted for under this bizarre, yet immensely rocking set of instruments. The handling of the bassline and guitars in particular always help sell any Rude Buster arrangement, and they're handled absolutely perfectly here.
Zoom unfortunately had a falling out with the SiIvaGunner team a few years back, and to my knowledge now goes under a new alias and doesn't wish to be associated with the channel any longer. It was a personal affair that I wish not to intrude on, and thus I won't look for let alone link to their socials as I typically do. Yet I hope wherever they are out there on the internet, they can be proud of the work they did on SiIva's first four seasons - producing several of my all-time favorite rips in the process.

For: Chandler ( @chvndlr ) Location: Kyzar's place
Displayed on their TV was the Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards menu played, a portable little cooler was next to coffee table, and a lot of various snacks laid around awaiting to be opened and enjoyed. Game night with his close friend, one could say in Kyzar's eyes their best friend, Chandler, had finally arrived, and Ky was stoked. They had been counting down the hours during their shift today because they were so excited to leave and get their place in order, even cleaning up a little, for tonight's fun night ahead. They contemplated ordering some take out but figured that was a decision that could be made as a unit with Chandler once he got here. Ky had only just flopped down on the couch, cracking a beer open (pineapple flavored, because they favored fruity tasting beers), taking a big swig, when the knock on their door happened and it almost made them jump up in excitement.
"Chill." They reminded themselves although they were certain by this point in their friendship Chandler was used to their energetic personality, it felt like the two truly did balance each other out perfectly. With their beer still in hand Kyzar makes their way over to open the door, a goofy smile on their face greets Chandler when the door opens. "Well, it's about damn time, slow poke. Jeez. I've been waiting for, like, forever minutes for you." Ky gives them a playful wink, stepping aside to let their friend enter, taking another swig of their beer. "I was going to order some food for us, but figured we could just figure that out together. Or, you know, you could just figure it out for both of us."

So I wanted to say Fecto Elfilis at first because he's been the most recent boss I defeated and I loved the challenges and the ending afterwards.
Or Drawcia because she's my favorite in terms of appearances and appealed to me back then as a starting artist.
Or maybe Nightmare because he's the literal first boss I defeated in Kirby.
Or just Dedede, he's just an awesome boss in general and I love him as a recurring character.
But I choose 0², I'm going with this boss because they had the most memorable impact on me, as a final boss, in a Kirby franchise to this day.
I'll write my story down not to clutter your dash, it's a little long so I hope you don't mind. ^^
(Spoilers for ye Kirby 64 current players, I guess. xD)
Back in my kid years when we switched turns between us siblings to play, it took us a lot to finally reach and defeat Miracle Matter. It was already a scary, difficult boss for me to defeat. And I was so glad to defeat it.
The cutscene of the alternate ending keeps you thinking that there's obviously more to the story, and to get that you had to collect all 100 crystal shards. There was one crystal piece left, and all of us knew which piece it was.
That crystal shard in the volcano crater, Neo Star - Stage 4.
This one.
Tumblr media
We took turns in reaching that area and trying different power combos to destroy it. But alas; we were impatient enough to give up at that time.
So skip to my highschool years. We had a Wii, and with it came the portable 64 games including Kirby and the Crystal Shards.
I played the game again just for the fun of it, no plans for completion at the time. Until I managed to collect all 99 shards again by myself over time.
I thought to myself, since my grades weren't getting any better and I had a lot of free time that day: why not give it another try?
This time I used my favorite combo; Ice and Needle. This was a big challenge: this ability, while strong, forces Kirby to stay immobile in one place. In addition to Dedede's assist part where if you lose, you also lose the combo ability.
Which forces you to leave the stage, get the combo again and restart from the beginning.
By now you can tell it was going to take a while to get it right, but I wasn't going to give up yet.
Finally I got the last piece and reached Ripple Star again, and went to fight the Miracle Matter once more.
Btw, did you know you see a scribble-like effect if you defeated Miracle Matter, but then came back after getting 100 shards? I didn't know that then!
Tumblr media
After defeating this 'final boss' again, everything from there was different.
Even with the available internet back then, I didn't even see the cutscenes, I wasn't spoiled about another last stage.
Everything felt.. new. The cutscenes the stage, and.. the final boss.
So imagine older me then, seeing this boss transforming in front of me, fighting them with no knowledge on how to defeat it or what even was the name.
Tumblr media
The adrenaline of going up against a foreign, old-game final boss never felt like this, the music and the feel of it all. Fighting 0² was the best final fight for me, because of not knowing about it for years. The element of discovering the unknown on your own after years of letting it go was a big factor to appreciating this boss.
Also, you can't quit this fight.
Tumblr media
Getting an answer to what lied behind those simple cutscenes years ago, and finally reaching that true ending of the game, is what made 0² my favorite Kirby Final Boss. Ever. ^^
Sorry for dragging you all along with me on this story ramble, went down memory lane a bit. xD
Thanks for reading! ^^//
