Why do lesbians always get some of the WORST representation of almost all the sexualities?
(
Like, the first lesbians I think of in media I've watched are Tenko Chabashira, from Danganronpa V3, Killing Harmony (Not canon confirmed, but heavily implied), Vaggie, from Hazbin Hotel, and Catra, from She-Ra, Princesses of Power. And all three of them, are really shitty representation.
Tenko is very sexist towards men, constantly calling them degenerate males, discriminating against them (calling them all perverted, evil, etc), and quite literally, abusive (verbally).
This is a very tired, and harmful lesbian stereotype, where a lesbian is 'only attracted to women because of her distaste towards men.' She's also just... Really damn gross towards the female cast, especially Himiko. Like, she's literally obsessed. Don't believe me? Play the game yourself, or watch a playthrough. Himiko is very obviously uncomfortable with Tenko goddamn stalking her, in the first chapter. It's also mildly infuriating how in the second chapter, Tenko repeatedly talks badly about Angie (Himiko's friend), saying she's (A) manipulating her (H), and all sorts of other stuff. And the Himiko growing to like Tenko thing just seems very clunky and forced. Like... I get that Tenko didn't live long, so there wasn't enough time for them to play it naturally, but it always came off as too soon for me? That's just my opinion though.
Vaggie is another harmful stereotype, for lesbians, and people in relationships in general. She's kind of similar to Tenko, in which she's extremely feisty towards men, and women. Just very aggressive in general (Which is also a harmful Hispanic stereotype, so.. triple threat/neg)
But.. that's basically it. I'm not saying that's the only thing wrong with her, I'm saying that's basically all of her character. She's a butch, warrior woman who's constantly angry and aggressive. She's, quite literally, NOTHING without her girlfriend, Charlie. She has no real likes, nor interests, her 'major plot twist' only affects her and Charlie, so it's not really impactful. She's just there to be Charlie's girlfriend, nothing else. Even during 'her song', it's just about fighting for what she loves, her girlfriend. Not fighting against the very people who betrayed her, who kill hundreds, of not millions of demons every day. Nope! Fight for your girlfriend! It's just aggravating.
Catra is literally abusive towards Adora. She made it her ENTIRE lifes purpose, just to get back at Adora. Now, excuse me for possibly being inaccurate, but I stopped watching SRPOP at around the beginning of season three. But Catra has (according to research);
Went out of her way to keep a cycle of abuse spinning around
Beaten Adora up (multiple times!?!?)
Murdered Adora's best friends mother
Trying to force Adora to meet her needs and expectations regardless of Adora’s owns
Similar to Vaggie, bases her ENTIRE existence on Adora.
And DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE FACT THAT THEY ARE DAMN SIBLINGS (Both consider Shadow Weaver their mother, were raised together, are literally called siblings in canon posts. Just because they aren't blood, doesn't mean they aren't family)
Not gonna mention Amity Blight (The Owl House). Just too tired rn
TLDR: Stop making all lesbian/WLW ships toxic. I beg of you

Zoomer Lesbians, We Have a Culture Problem
A friend recently told me that she thinks another woman might be “fruity” because she always sees her with iced coffee. I knew what she meant, but I kind of wish I didn’t.
Zoomer lesbians of the world, I ask you: do we even know our own stereotypes?
If you’re lucky enough not to know what I’m talking about, here’s a few Gen Z lesbian and sapphic stereotypes:
Drinking iced coffee. Walking around with a limp wrist. Bad at driving. Bad at math. Cuffs their jeans.
When I wrote this list, the problem suddenly became clear. These are stereotypes about gay men being confused for stereotypes about the entire LGBTQ community. Think about it – guys are made fun of for doing everything listed above because they’re considered to be effeminate or gay.
I get how this happened, considering gay men are often at the forefront of LGBTQ visibility, but when you apply it to gay women, it doesn’t make any sense. The word “fruity” especially bothers me. I had to go and check the dictionary because I’ve been hearing it everywhere lately, but I swore that was a rude way of calling a man gay only 10 years ago.
...
My concern is that the stereotypes that we’re working off of in Gen Z aren’t going to translate to anyone who isn’t us (or, frankly, to other zoomers who aren’t fully enmeshed in American Gen Z internet culture). And to be completely honest, as someone who’s more of a millennial-zoomer cusp, I just find it annoying when I name-drop a lesbian artist who made music before TikTok became a thing and a lesbian only 5 years younger than me has no idea who I’m talking about. I can’t imagine how much of a culture gap there must be for Gen X and up. Our gaydar is literally getting worse.
So, what do we do about it? How do we get a common language amongst the lesbians so we can recognize each other better?

Okay. I feel like I need to say something about the statement "butches and studs who date straight women." I hear it all the time on TikTok, usually as an excuse to run us down and accuse us of toxic masculinity, so let's talk about it.
How is a woman who is willingly in a relationship with a butch or stud straight? That is not a heterosexual relationship! Some of you equate being conventionally feminine with being straight, and it's not it. Femme lesbians are an integral part of this community too.
It's also not a crime for butches and studs to like women who are very feminine, or to want to take on a more traditionally masculine role in a relationship. Lesbian relationships and dynamics are unique and special, and at no point do they become heterosexual.

I'm a gay woman. Everything means something to us. There's no comment (that) you can't overanalyze. There's no gesture (that) you can't dissect. There's no glance (that) you can't read too much into.

Does stereotypes about gay men come from assumptions about gay sex?
I haven't really done research about this so someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Like, there's all sorts of traditional gender scripts in heterosexual couples, down to the way they have sex. Male on top, female on bottom, or even just the act of penetration being seen as masculine. This is generalizing btw, this is just traditional hetero views. English law says that only someone with a penis can carry out rape (pretty fucked up ik), meaning only someone who can penetrate. I'm bad at explaining things but does this make sense? Like, even rape is seen as a masculine thing.
Then there's that Bible verse that's like do not sleep with a man as you would a woman. I know there's been recent stuff saying that it probably is talking more about pedophilia at the time than homosexuality, but the mistranslation still had a very prevalent impact on history. The phrasing of it kind of feels like its comparing gay sex to a woman being fucked by a man, since gay sex usually includes a man being penetrated. So kinda calling it effeminate.
I think it also extends to lesbian invisibility. A lot of people might not be taking lesbians seriously because their sex doesn't usually involve penetration (at least not with a penis) so it's not really seen as real sex. And, of course, because people just assume lesbians are good friends.
Let me know if anything I said doesn't make sense. I'm bad at explaining stuff and I might be wrong in some of this.

Update on me and my friend, a friend of theirs has made many a joke about us/our relationship being every lesbian stereotype ever but in a platonic way
My personal favourite is us effectively U-Hauling after knowing each other for a week

Saw a post about working class butches in physical labour jobs and wanted to make my own, so: I love you butches who do childcare or early education. I love you butch nurses. I love you butch house cleaners and janitorial staff. I love you service industry butches. I love you butches who do sex work. I love you working class butches who do “feminine” jobs you are cool as hell

not to be That Person but y’all have got to learn to be more normal about bisexual and pansexual characters. this isn’t 2012. women romancing astarion is not the problem, nor is karlach “lesbian coded”. the real problem is y’all’s bi/panphobia stemming largely from homophobic stereotypes

The U-Haul stereotype has always reeked of projection to me because I know multiple straight couples who got married and had whole ass kids in under 365 days

We met in Lawrence. Couple of dates, and then we were living together. So, it was like first date, the toothbrush, second date, the U-Haul.

Sometimes I dress exactly like the Hot Wife just to push her buttons a bit. Always makes her laugh, shake her head and roll her eyes at me. 😁
