✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨
Les Normaux by Janine Janssen and S Al Sabado
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
QOTD: What’s an underrated trope you love?
I love when they kiss/make out/hook up the first time they meet thinking it’s a one off then it turns out they live in the same building or work together or something. And then the mutual pining starts. I don’t know if there’s a specific name for this but I love it and this gorgeous graphic novel has it.
[instagram]
Thank you so much to Harper Collins for sending me an e-copy of this one in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely INHALED this! The art had me hooked from the start and the characters drew me in even further. Seriously, the artwork in this one is so stunning I want to hang it on my wall.
I love the way Sébastien and Elia meet and the subsequent mutual pining that goes on in this book. They’re so sweet together.
Sébastien’s backstory made my heart ache and I just wanted to hug him. He’s got a lot to work through but he has more support than he knows. I’d love to know more about Elia’s past and family.
I also loved all the side characters. There’s so much wonderful queer rep from aroace to pan and everything in between.
I NEED a second volume stat. This can’t be all I get of these wonderful characters.

Have you all ever heard of Les Normaux?!?! Cuz if not, YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY READ IT!!! The webcomic can be found on both Tapas and Webtoon :> This lovely fanart right here is of Elia, one of the main characters and Keiko! A lovely, lovely character that was just recently introduced and just absolutely stole my heart.
Tho early chapters and extra content can be found on @theartofknightjj and @alababwa 's patreon! (Editor's note: actually the Patreon is only JJ's, but Al also works on the project so yeah, there u go) I highly recommend getting in, theirs is the first ever patreon I've ever subscribed to and I haven't regretted it one second haha.
I'd also written a whole sob post about how much Les Normaux meant to me as both a reader and also a creative and then I accidentally deleted it all, rip! Probably for the best, so as not to embarass myself so much XD But yeah, long story short, Les Normaux is just absolutely amazing, wonderful read, beautiful art and just such and inspiring work overall. It should have a bigger fandom, imho.
For now, I hope everyone (or anyone) who sees this has a wonderful day/afternoon/evening

Happy Webcomic Day!
To celebrate, I wanted to shout out some webcomics that I really enjoy:
Les Normaux by @theartofknightjj A gorgeous lgbtq+ slice of life comic about citizens of a supernatural Paris, going through their trials, tribulations and triumphs in life and love. The art is beautiful, the characters are engaging, and the stories are wonderfully sweet.
The Youngblood Chronicles comic by @ybcthecomic A comic adaptation of Fall Out Boy's Youngblood Chronicles music videos, adding more story, character and context. It's dark, intense and brilliantly character-driven. It's also unexpectedly funny, mostly from really good dialogue moments.
Dig Them Up by @dig-them-up-comic Another comic based on music! In this case, Bastille's Flaws and the music video for it. This one is only a handful of pages in, but it's already a lot of fun and intrigue. I'm really looking forward to how it unfolds!
Into the Midnight City by @intothemidnightcity Though currently on hiatus, there's a good amount of content to read for ItMC, which follows a detective agency in the eponymous (and extremely supernatural) Midnight City. It's fun, queer, joyous, and just overall delightful! The lore is fascinating, the characters are instantly likeable, and the art is beyond charming.
Nix of Nothing by @mleelunsford It becomes apparent that queer fantasy is really my preferred genre! Nix of Nothing is another really interesting supernatural story, following a mysterious demigod, Nix, on their adventures. The art is fantastic, with really dynamic character designs. I'm super intrigued to see where the story goes.

Happy Halloween and HAPPY 10 YEARS since I drew these two for the very first time!! 🎃💚💜
I drew the first characters of Les Normaux exactly 10 years ago today during a livestream. They were just 3 sets of monster couples drawn spontaniously for fun! I could’ve never ever imagined where that night would lead me 10 years later.
It feels crazy yet poetic that so soon these two will have their own /published/ book in bookstores. What a way to celebrate 🥹✨
But ofcourse I had to also come on here and embarras myself by posting my oooold art so I could redraw them! So here are 2024, 2014 and a bonus 2017 redraw of the boys. (Will be redrawing Ronnie and Drew later dw!!)
Thank you all for loving them for this long. So excited for this next chapter in their story!! 🐰✨

[Image description: a digital drawing of Elia, a blue-skinned vampire with pulled-back black hair from the comic Les Normaux. He's wearing black high-waisted pants, a sleeveless white turtleneck and frilly, wide green sleeves. There are red flowers in his hair, as well as in his hand and at his knees. The beige background is bordered with a red line. End description.]
I was planning to do just a little sketch of Elia because he's my fave (long-haired man, silly, blue), but I lose all sense of control and time when drawing beautiful men (*cough* terminally bisexual) so I ended up with a completed piece! Thank you to @alababwa and @theartofknightjj for creating him so that I may roll him around in my head indefinitely <3

Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel
Tumblr media
Official Blurb:
'One of my favourite webcomics of all time' Alice Oseman Boy moves to new city. Boy meets vampire. They kiss, then become friends. But both would like something more… A global Webtoon phenomenon and LGBTQ+ graphic novel about friendship, love and magic. Sébastien recently moved to supernatural Paris hoping to get away from his troubles at home and live a peaceful life learning magic. But what are you going to do when the really hot vampire you made out with last night to forget your troubles turns out to be your new neighbor? Sébastien (a demisexual boy with “main character hair” and a bunny named Pierre), meet Elia (a hot, supermodel, vampire neighbor and crush). Join Elia, Sébastien and their assorted crew of wonderful friends, as they navigate the ins and outs of dating in a modern and paranormal love story.
My Thoughts:
I recently got the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of the upcoming graphic novel of Les Normaux. I have not read the webcomic version but I absolutely adored reading the graphic novel and I can't wait to read more!
Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel is set in a magical version of Paris and follows Sébastien, who has recently run away from the human version. He quickly meets Elia, an attractive vampire, and the two soon find out that they are neighbors. As the two slowly become close, we meet their friends and family and get to know the fun and diverse world that they inhabit.
My favorite thing about the graphic novel is the burgeoning relationship between Sébastien and Elia, of course. The two are seriously adorable and I loved all of their interactions. Their dynamic is so cute and squeal-worthy. I'm enamored with them already.
Sébastien/Elia's slow-burn relationship is the main focus of the story but there's also a lot of character-building that I really enjoyed. Every character in this is delightful. Both main characters are interesting and have a lot of depth. The supporting characters are all fun and enjoyable. Even Pierre, Sébastien's pet bunny, gets a few interludes that made me laugh out loud. The characters are also incredibly diverse. There's gay, bisexual, pansexual, and aroace representation among the characters!
There's also strong focus on friendships and chosen families in this that I loved. The friendship dynamics are sweet and I always love the found family trope.
Finally, the artwork in this is truly beautiful and has gorgeous coloring.
I highly recommend any fan of diverse and queer media to pick up a copy of Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel when it is released. I genuinely enjoyed every second of reading this and I look forward to future volumes (and getting a hardcover copy of this volume). In the meantime, if anyone needs me, I will be binge reading the webcomic!
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tropes/Tags: queer, Achillean, cozy fantasy, romantasy, paranormal romance, slowburn, found family

Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel will be released on February 11, 2025, and is available for pre-order!
I received an advanced digital copy of this book for free thanks to Avon and Harper Collins. The above are my honest feelings about the book provided. I don’t have any affiliate links in this post and I do not make any money from my reviews. I review books simply because I love to read.
