The Oceanic Manta Ray (Mobula birostris). (X)
To my two Tumblr followers give me an animal and I'll design a character
#have my favorite sea creature#proud to be one of your two followers#I'm a zoologist of course I saw this and it took me a while three minutes to pick on animal#but if you were really hoping for a mammal you can do the Ocelot(Leopardus pardalis) instead.

The Sphinx, Alasimius catti (“winged-monkey cat”). Leopardus pardalis used as comparison for other members of their subfamily, Felinae.
#I’ve been thinking so much about sphinxes lately I had to try my hand at making a realistic-looking design for them#I think it’s okay? maybe a little too cat-like#they’re supposed to be primate-like in the face#but I guess they’re still felids so. what can you do#I’ll do gryphons next#mythology#furry art#science#furry#sphinxes#ocelots#cats

Wimchlat
So, the first thing me and my siblings did was look up animals that are called wolf, but are not actually wolves. Ideally one that medieval people would not have known about, so there's no chance I accidentally draw the exact animal. Sibling looked around and discovered that the maned wolf is known for having urine that smells like weed. Also, THC forms crystals.
Weed knowers may notice that my medieval marijuana does not have the right kind of flowers. The fruit and flowers are based on the wolf-apple, a belladonna cousin that makes up a very prominent percentage of the maned wolf's diet.
For the fur, I referenced the ocelot. Their range overlaps with the maned wolf, and their scientific name, Leopardus pardalis, suggests they might be the most pard of all.
#wimchlat#artist: me :)#maniculum bestiaryposting#My sweetheart suggested I am a coward for not drawing the pee#But while I will draw a beast for fun I will only draw piss for cold hard cash

Phylogenetic wild cat tournament
Ocelot lineage
Genus: Leopardus
Depth: 7 (6 wins away from championship)
Another branch of the Leopardus genus, with two similar-looking species: the margay is smaller, its head is a little shorter, the eyes are larger, and the tail and legs are relatively longer. (The ocelot is the size of a bobcat, the margay is close to a housecat.) Both of them are excellent climbers and spend most of their time on trees.
Ocelot
Margay
