There’s a popular post about how Leonard Nimoy went to a Yiddish speaking therapist just to practice the language, but the first time I ever heard him speak it was when I stumbled into the Yiddish Book Center’s Wexler Oral History Project.
youtube
This video is just a piece of a nearly 2 hour long video interview that you can find at the Wexler Oral History Project’s website.
If you don’t feel like listening to the whole 2 hours straight, they’ve divided it into bite sized chunks of different interview topics if you scroll down a bit.
It’s a really beautiful story. And language. What a fascinating history.

A Thousand Yards notes:
- It being Jackie’s 60th birthday made me google Paula Newsome, and she’s apparently 62 (how??!), also I could swear she was meant to be a few years younger than Vance (born in ‘63)
- I thought of Lee Wuan Kai when Vance collapsed- something about it seemed like her
- Air Force One!!! Our very first episode
- I love these recent seasons’ Curtis Hubley resurgence, and we got a ‘probie’ mention
- Jared’s agent behavior was very sweet
- Kasie got to namedrop the title!
- Sniper on a rooftop? Oof
- Morrow family crypt, Dr. Kate’s sister mention, Chucky(!) mention, and poor Fornell- his garage is his office (also Knight needs to brush up on her history)
- How hard would it have been to get a NOLA cast member?
- McGee putting his foot in his mouth! Also McDirector returns
- Vance looking to Parker for advice like he would Gibbs was just ❤️
- I appreciated Parker’s stance on billionaires- a nice change from ‘Left Unsaid’, using the name ‘Voss’ was a risky move, considering the plot of ‘Dead Man Talking’ (also the actor was in ‘One Shot, One Kill’)
- Somebody not being able to get into MTAC- fun times
- Jared being manipulated online? Come on, seriously?
- Bringing drinks to the lab- nice Abby reference
- They missed an opportunity for the Adams House
- Everybody giving Lindsey Wexler death stares was great
- Fornell and a couch? Hmm
- Well, the conspiracy theory about Jackie was right
- Rule 39! One of my favorites
- Camera-clicking in a ball cap and another Gibbs reference!
- Gaslit? Facepalm but a GREMLIN MENTION makes up for it
- His name was Leonard Rush, writers :/, also I knew Lindsey would be the daughter of someone from the early days, but I didn’t guess him
- Threat to Air Force One- full-circle moment!
- William Baer Jr. was a relatively-obscure reference, I approve
- Driving through the gates- a very Gibbs move, more approval
- They did a great job making Vance look younger, and we got a flashback montage right back to ‘Hung Out To Dry’, although I wish they’d included Reeves, Abby, and Jenny
- Bringing up how they never get credit omg
Overall, this was a great episode that took us right back to the beginning. Here’s to all those to come

Chapter 1: Analysis and Discussion
So we're starting where almost every good story starts: at the beginning. But even before the beginning, we have to talk about the inside cover page. It's not mentioned on the front, but here we can see this was written by children's author Irene Trimble. I'm only taking the time to point this out so A. People know who wrote this, and B. because Irene Trimble ALSO wrote the junior novelization for Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, a movie which is very conceptually similar to Foodfight. (Even down to being mostly about original characters and only featuring famous ones in cameo roles). Lawrence Kasanoff, Joshua Wexler, Sean Derek, Rebecca Swanson and Brent Friedman are also given writing credit, although this is clearly just for the script to the movie itself.
Anyway with that out of the way, the first page of Chapter 1 is mostly identical to what's seen in the finished film- the last customer of the night says goodbye to Leonard, the manager, as he closes up the supermarket for the day. The dialogue is even exactly the same! So nothing much to talk about so far. Incidentally though, in an early trailer for the movie from 2002, the sign above Leonard's supermarket says "Carlson's Market". In the finished movie from 2012 however, the sign says "Marketropolis Market" (which is a far worse name, in my opinion). Here neither name is used, so I guess we'll never know what the store is called in this version of the story!
The following page of Chapter 1 continues as the lights of the grocery store shut off and the place closes for the night. For a brief second everything is still, and then it miraculously comes to life, transforming into a bustling metropolis. The shelves turn into buildings, and the mascots of various products turn into "Ikes" (short for "brand icons"). This term isn't used right away in the novelization, however it's used so frequently in the movie itself and also later in the book that I think we should establish the preferred nomenclature right away.
Anyway, with the supermarket now full of life we focus in on a "large bird in glasses" who sees a helium balloon drifting across the store and says "We're in a pickle now!". It's not explicitly spelled out, but this is clearly supposed to be the Vlasic Stork (the mascot for a real-life brand of pickles.) Presumably they couldn't get the rights to any real-world brands for the novelization, so it's just being alluded to here as much as possible without saying his name. This is a trend that's also seen in author Irene Trimble's later work on the Wreck-It Ralph novelization, where none of the videogame characters are actually named but instead just implied (e.g. simply referring to Zangeif from Street Fighter as a large Russian wrestler.) The Vlasic Stork also doesn't have any dialogue in the actual movie, so it's up to interpretation whether this line was added to the novelization to clarify who he was, or if it was in the movie at one point but cut out.
Riding the helium balloon is Fat Cat Burglar, the mascot for the Fat Cat Litter brand. In the movie, this character is introduced without explaining who he is or what he's the Ike for, so it's nice to get some clarification here. We also get introduced to our main character, Dex Dogtective, the mascot for Cinnamon Sleuth cereal. In the novelization, he jumps from atop his shelf onto the giant balloon, but in the movie he's introduced already standing atop it. In general, this whole sequence so far has played out slightly differently to how it does in the movie, but not enough to be hugely noteworthy so far.
Okay, here we are on the next page and just like I did a few paragraphs ago, the book has established that brand icons are named "Ikes" in this world. It's good to be ahead of the curve though, right? Dex tells Fat Cat Burglar to hand over a basket of stolen kittens or else- this dialogue is mostly identical to how it is in the movie. However, of note is that Fat Cat Burglar is described as an "overstuffed cat" here, with mention of him twirling his whiskers. Now, I don't know if you've seen the actual movie (Please say you have I can't imagine why you'd be reading this blog if you haven't) but in the movie, Fat Cat Burglar is clearly a giant rat.
I mean, look at him, that's a rat. There's no two ways about it, there's no mistaking him for an entirely different species. So either Irene Trimble read the script and just assumed from the name that Fat Cat Burglar was a cat himself, OR at some point during production the character WAS actually a cat and this was changed later on. We may never know! But here, in the novelization, we can say for sure that he's a cat. Moving on, the rest of the page continues very similar to the movie- Fat Cat sends a group of hamster henchmen after Dex with the intention of pulverizing him.
Dex proceeds to beat up the hamsters with some slick martial arts moves before throwing them off the balloon with a roundhouse kick. This doesn't happen in the movie at all- already the differences are starting to add up. In the movie, he simply throws a piece of cheese off the balloon and the hamsters mindlessly run after it before falling Looney Tunes-style into the streets below. It's just Dex and Fat Cat now, and Dex demands he hand over the basket of kittens. Fat Cat refuses, and explains he needs to use the cats to make "black market Kitty Litter cookies" and Dex takes the time tell him this idea is in fact terrible and weird. Again, the explanation for why he's stealing kittens in the first place isn't in the movie either! 4 pages in (there are 128 total) and there are already so many differences! It makes you wonder just how different the rest of the novelization is gonna be, right?
Dex punctures the balloon with a cocktail sword and catches the kittens in midair, before using his price tag gun like a whip/lasso (think Indiana Jones) to hook onto a nearby building and land himself safely in nearby Produce Park. In the movie, Fat Cat gets a line of dialogue as the balloon flies away crying "I just wanna be loved...IS THAT SO WRONG?" that isn't present here at all, but that's about the only difference.
Dex hands over the basket of kittens to Hairy Hold, a fox Ike and the mascot for a brand of hair-care products. This character isn't a part of the scene in the movie, and in fact isn't introduced until later on, but here the novelization briefly tells us who he is and what Dex thinks about him. Dex also changes out of his leather jacket and hat (again, think Indiana Jones) into a fancy white tuxedo, however in the movie he's still in his adventuring getup for the rest of the scene.
As Chapter 1 draws to a close, we're introduced to Hedda Shopper, a newspaper reporter who remarks this is the five-hundredth case he's solved as head of the USDA (the United Supermarket Defense Association, not the United States Department of Agriculture) and asks what his secret is. Dex delivers his catchphrase "The secret's inside", and the chapter draws to a close. There's not a whole lot to say here as this exchange is identical to how it is in the movie.
So, that's Chapter 1 of this strange, strange book. 6 pages in and there are already major diversions from the movie, which is common for novelizations (they're usually based on earlier drafts of a movie's script, e.g. the infamous Back To The Future novelization) but it's especially interesting with Foodfight as it had such a troubled production, and like I mentioned at the start of this blog this appears to be the only copy of the novelization in existence so nobody else has EVER seen this. It's cool to get some insight on how this movie changed over the course of production, right? And that's not even getting into the changes to the story made in later chapters... if you thought THIS was different from the final film, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Stay tuned for the analysis/discussion of Chapter 2, coming soon!

Name 10 Characters From 10 Fandoms That You Love
Thanks for the tag @alonelyturtle ❤️
1. Javier Peña and Horacio Carrillo from Narcos (Ok a bit of a cheat, I know lol, but I'm sorry, I can't pick one and not the other after everything I've put them through in my fic...these two have become my go-to comfort characters and I will not be taking any questions)
2. Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad (The urge to hug him is still strong)
3. Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul (The show already separated McWexler enough as it is, so they once again come as a pair...and I'm classing it as a different fandom to BrBa for the purposes of this game lol)
4. Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt from AMC's Interview with the Vampire (Again, sorry, I can't separate them, they're deranged soulmates, damnit!!)
5. Kendall Roy from Succession (Such a pathetic mess of a man, I can't wait to watch him suffer again next year lol)
6. John Childermass from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (I get giddy just thinking about one gruff, eyerolling, 100% done Yorkshire magician)
7. David Rose and Patrick Brewer from Schitt's Creek (Sorry, another couple I couldn't bring myself to separate lol)
8. Faith Lehane from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Not that I realised it at the time, but she was my bi awakening)
9. Leia Organa from Star Wars (Iconic and I always wanted her hair when I was a kid)
10. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy from Star Trek (AOS) (My favourite space grump)
No pressure tags: @mariamariquinha, @thoroughlymodernminutia, @massivecolorspygiant, @queenofthefaceless and anyone else who wants to play!

headcanons for:
dallas / leo / harlan / fin / tj
DALLAS
Dallas is my resident jock lets talk about what positions you can catch him playing in his various sports. Baseball is his main and I'd say it's where he finds his most success in most of my verses. In high school he rotated most infield positions but in college he mostly plays first base where his long wingspan can be utilized. He's also great at bat and is usually a heavy hitter. In hockey Dallas plays the right wing position. Thanks to his large stature while he's not the fastest player on the ice he has incredible aim and shooting skills. Dallas is also known to be fairly aggressive on the ice. Basketball rounds out the last of Dallas's favorite sports. It was the sport most heavily pushed by his father so it's definitely the sport he drops the fastest but while he played he was an excellent shooting guard.
LEO
Leo has been speaking French as long as he's been speaking English. His mother is a native French speaker and always dreamed of being able to speak with her children in her native tongue. All of Leo's nannies have spoken French, but some had varying dialects so he'd pick up regional phrases that would bewilder his mother. It's his instinct to curse in French before English and the more passionate he is speaking about something the more likely he is to accidentally slip in a french word or phrase as his mind is going a mile a minute.
HARLAN
For many years after his mother's disappearance it was just Harlan and his father, Mathias. How they each handled that trauma was two sides of the same coin while Harlan became obsessed with the case, Mathias shut it out entirely. The more time that went by the less Mathias spoke of his late wife. Despite his silence Harlan was still very surprised when his father remarried about ten years later. Harlan was 23 and within the next year he had a half brother on the way. It takes a while (and a fair amount of therapy) before he can even really address his step mom. He does eventually come around on being a big brother despite the age difference.
FIN
Fin's favorite genre of music is classic rock and that has everything to do with the fact that's what they were raised on. Fin's dad was constantly listening to Rush, Zeppelin, Boston, etc. It's the music they learned to drum too and is a tether to their father who they don’t have much else in common with. These artists created a pipeline for them getting involved in the punk scene (not something their dad generally approved of but he's a jerk so it doesn't matter what he thinks!!). While Fin will always have a complicated relationship with their father they are thankful to at least have this brief common ground with him.
TJ
When TJ first left her small town to pursue her boxing career there was a period where it felt like it was going nowhere. She spent countless hours training and it felt futile to continue (not even underground clubs wanted to take her on). She was a newcomer who needed to prove her worth and while she's never one to back down from a challenge she needed a physical outlet that sparring just wasn't doing for her. So, she was convinced to give roller derby a try despite never being on skates a day in my life. Learning to skate humbled her and being on the track helped trained her reflexes in a vital way. After three years TJ hung up her skates when she started booking more fights (she still goes and supports her former teammates whenever possible).

RIP Carla Cugino's tv dad ;o(
RIP Robert Forster 1941-2019
This truly sucks bigtime! One of my favorite actors Robert Forster has died at 78. He was excellent in so many films and TV shows, even when the film or show was bad, he was consistently good.
Forster in Medium Cool
He has 186 acting credits on his IMDB, several are in my collection. He was the lead in Haskell Wexler’s political drama Medium Cool, one of my favorite Jaws rip-offs Alligator, the doctor in Gus Van Sant’s Psycho remake, the indie Diamond Men, David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, the father-in-law in Alexander Payne’s brilliant The Descendants, small but noteworthy role on Breaking Bad, Sheriff Frank Truman on Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival, and the news sadly comes as he re-appeared in the Breaking Bad role in the just-released El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
On Twin Peaks
Possibly his greatest performance of all was the career comeback he got in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. Forster auditioned but didn’t get the part of Joe in Reservoir Dogs, but QT kept him in mind for the bail bondsman Max Cherry in Jackie Brown, his adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel. It was such a great performance among a phenomenal cast. After it was released in 1997, so much attention was on star Pam Grier, but then when the Academy Award nominations were announced, Forster was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, the film’s only nomination. Years later, he returned to Elmore Leonard’s universe when he starred on the short-lived but very good Karen Sisco.
Pam Grier and Forster in Jackie Brown
At the 2002 Marco Island Film Festival, I attended the fest with my short To Be John Woo. The lifetime achievement recipient was Forster. Just knowing that my film was selected to be a part of the same festival that Forster was also a part of was a tremendous honor for me. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to make it to the festival because he had been cast in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle at the last minute. But they had a little montage of his films, he called in to say thank you, and they screened his indie film Roads to Riches he did with Rose McGowan.
In the 2000s, I had a screenplay I wrote and one of my casting choices was Forster for a supporting role. Sadly I never got my screenplay to him and never got to direct him.

Yehuda’s Soft Tissue Sarcoma Story
New Story has been published on https://enzaime.com/yehudas-soft-tissue-sarcoma-story/
Yehuda’s Soft Tissue Sarcoma Story
When six-year-old Yehuda developed sudden, unexplainable leg pain, his parents were stunned when he was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer that involves the bone and soft tissue. Because the tumor was located near his spine, Yehuda was at risk of losing the use of his leg. His family brought him to Memorial Sloan Kettering, where Yehuda had four rounds of chemotherapy before undergoing a 14-hour surgery to remove the tumor and preserve the use of his leg.
Yehuda Furman was not the kind of six-year-old boy who complained much. So it was something of a surprise when during the April 2005 Passover holiday, Yehuda started to complain about a pain in his leg. That night he was crying in his sleep from the pain and by the next morning, it had become so bad that he could not walk.
Yehuda’s parents, Mark and Miriam, immediately took him to his pediatrician. After an examination and a series of blood tests, the doctor asked the Furmans to try and remember if Yehuda had been involved in any recent accidents.
“The one thing we could think of,” Miriam remembers, “is a fall he had taken off the monkey bars in the neighborhood playground a number of days earlier.” Based on this and a spike in Yehuda’s temperature, the pediatrician’s initial diagnosis was transient synovitis of the hip, a condition in which the hip joint’s inner lining, known as the synovium, becomes inflamed.
Trying to Find a Diagnosis
The doctor made an emergency appointment with an orthopedist. After ordering x-rays, the orthopedist reviewed the results of the initial blood tests, which included abnormally high white blood cell counts, suggesting an infection. Because the x-rays did show a fluid buildup in the affected hip joint, the orthopedist became concerned that Yehuda might be suffering from a bacterial infection, which could affect his heart. Yehuda was immediately admitted to the local hospital.
Further testing in the hospital’s emergency department seemed to discount the possibility of a bacterial infection, with the emergency room doctors still suspecting transient synovitis. However, while not positive of the diagnosis and with Yehuda in increasing pain and running a fever, the doctors admitted Yehuda for observation and testing. Meanwhile, the pain had moved from Yehuda’s upper leg down to his calf and foot. The pain was so bad that he couldn’t walk and would barely let anyone touch his leg for an examination.
“Not being satisfied with their explanations, I asked the doctor if it could be something more serious,” Mark says. “But he looked at me like I was nuts, saying with firmness ’This is a bone infection. We just don’t know exactly where the infection is located.’”
By the morning of the following day, Wednesday, as the discharge papers were being prepared, Yehuda’s temperature spiked again. The pain was now so bad that he had to be placed on a morphine drip. On Thursday, doctors performed an MRI and an ultrasound of his hip joint and lower extremities. When both those screening exams proved inconclusive, the radiologist performed a CT scan.
“It’s Bad. It’s Real Bad.”
After another long hour’s wait, the orthopedist called with the news. Mark and Miriam will never forget his first words: “It’s bad. It’s real bad.” He went on to explain that the CT scans revealed a tumor that had penetrated Yehuda’s spinal cord. It was located in the upper sacrum, which is the large triangular bone located between the two hip bones at the base of the spine.
The doctors suspected cancer and the oncologist on call at the hospital that day ordered a biopsy of the tumor for the following morning. At the same time, Mark’s brother-in-law took a copy of the films to be reviewed by a neuroradiologist at NYU Medical Center.
“If It’s Cancer, We Want to be at Sloan Kettering”
The surgeon who was supposed to perform the biopsy informed the Furmans that they did not have the expertise to perform surgery on a tumor in such a “tricky” location. The surgeon canceled the biopsy, explaining that when possible, the doctor who performs the surgery should be the one performing the biopsy. When they asked who did have the expertise, they were given the names of two doctors — one at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Patrick J. Boland, an orthopedic surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering. “Our thinking was, If it’s cancer, we want to be at Sloan Kettering,” Miriam explains.
“Literally a minute later,” Mark adds, “my brother-in-law called from NYU and said that their initial diagnosis from looking at the scans was Ewing sarcoma.” (A rare cancer that involves the bone as well as the soft tissue, Ewing sarcoma was first described in 1921 by Memorial Sloan Kettering oncologist James Ewing.) The advice he passed along to Mark and Miriam was that they should see Leonard Wexler, a pediatric oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering who specializes in the treatment of children with bone and soft tissue sarcomas. “At that time, we didn’t even realize that Dr. Boland was a surgeon and Dr. Wexler was a medical oncologist,” Mark says, laughing at the memory.
Two hours later, after a series of phone calls, Yehuda was in an ambulance being transferred to Memorial Sloan Kettering. “Our world was being turned upside down,” Miriam remarks. Mark went along with Yehuda, while Miriam went home to attend to the couple’s three other children.
“We had our initial consultation with Dr. Wexler, who was very conservative,” Mark recounts. “Until he had the results of all the tests, especially of the biopsy, which still needed to be done, he didn’t want to assume it was cancer.”
Wednesday Biopsy, Friday Diagnosis Confirmed
Yehuda was admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering on a Friday afternoon. CT and MRI scans were completed on Saturday, and the biopsy was performed on Wednesday. By Friday, it was confirmed: Yehuda had Ewing sarcoma. The Furmans had their initiation meeting with Dr. Wexler that day, and on Saturday Yehuda started the three-cycle presurgery chemotherapy portion of his treatment, which was given to shrink the tumor so it could be safely removed by surgery. (Some patients, depending on the location, extent, and type of the tumor, also receive radiation therapy as part of the Ewing sarcoma treatmentcombination.)
The tumor’s location near the spine meant that three nerve clusters leading to the leg might be involved. If these nerves had to be removed as part of the surgery, or were damaged during the surgery (or radiation), there would be a very real chance that Yehuda would lose the use of that leg. (The three nerves potentially involved were the S1 nerve, which controls the bottom of the foot and the calf muscle; the S2, which controls the hamstring muscle; and the L5, which controls the quadriceps muscle.)
“You know you’re going to have this life and death fight ahead of you,” Mark explains. “You look at the survival statistics, and you hope and pray that your child will end up at the good end of the numbers. But you also are forced to deal with the fact that all these dreams you had for your child may not come true. I had dreamt of playing baseball with my son, and now doctors were telling me that even if he beats cancer he may never walk again.”
Superb Prognosis Meets Rough Start of Treatment
Still, the Furmans never allowed themselves to be pessimistic about Yehuda’s chance of survival. “It helped that Dr. Wexler told us that Yehuda had a ’superb’ prognosis, meaning it was a treatable subtype of Ewing sarcoma that was caught much earlier than these type of tumors usually are — seven days versus the typical three to four months,” Mark says. “So they caught it early, before it had a chance to spread too far. And though the location was obviously not ideal for having to remove it, being near all those nerves, it did generate a lot of immediate pain, which gave us this early-warning signal.”
You need to go to a place with experts in treating your child’s cancer. That’s why we went to Memorial Sloan Kettering.
Mark FurmanYehuda’s Father
The Furmans split the days into shifts, with Miriam spending days with Yehuda at the hospital and Mark spending nights. The night after the first chemotherapy treatment was difficult. “He started vomiting, which alternated with uncontrollable diarrhea,” Mark says, wincing at the memory. “He couldn’t walk, so I was carrying him back and forth from the bathroom. In the middle of all of this, he looked up at me and asked, ’Am I dying?’ I told him no, that it was just his body trying to get rid of the chemo, which he was taking to kill the blob. That’s how we referred to the cancer, as ’the blob.’ That was the worst night. By the next day, the doctors and nurses figured out which combination of antinausea drugs would work for Yehuda.”
After the second cycle of chemotherapy was completed, Yehuda was rescanned to determine if the tumor was shrinking. While the tumor had shrunk considerably as a result of the chemotherapy, Dr. Boland still considered it to be too close to the spinal cord to remove safely with good margins, meaning that no tumor cells would be left behind. Leaving cells behind would require the use of radiation to kill them, which could possibly affect the nearby tissue, thereby negating the benefits of surgery.
Following the completion of the third round of chemotherapy, Dr. Boland was still not comfortable doing the surgery because he felt there was a high probability that Yehuda would require radiation therapy to deal with the cancer cells in the margins. As a result of the complexity resulting from the tumor location, Yehuda’s case was brought before a group of orthopedic specialists — called the Orthopedic Tumor Review Board — who review orthopedic cases at Memorial Sloan Kettering. While the Furmans prepared Yehuda for radiation treatment — a process that involved meeting the radiation team, discussing possible treatment and late effects, and going through the set-up and radiation simulation — Yehuda began the fourth cycle of chemotherapy. The plan was to start radiation after the fourth cycle was finished.
Towards the completion of the fourth cycle, the Orthopedic Tumor Review Board concluded that there was a 75 percent chance that Dr. Boland could remove the entire tumor. This left the Furmans with a choice. “Our personal opinion was that radiation was the last resort,” Mark notes. “We believed that surgery would give Yehuda the best chance of survival.” The Furmans discussed the options with Drs. Wexler and Boland and the decision was made to go ahead with surgery.
Seven-Hour Surgery Becomes 14 Hours
The day of surgery, August 22, 2005, will forever be etched in the Furmans’ minds. They were told that the surgery would most likely last about seven hours. Mark remembers the sight of Yehuda being wheeled into surgery, holding his beloved Nintendo Game Boy video game above his face. Unfortunately for the Furmans, who were waiting anxiously, the expected seven-hour surgery, which began at nine in the morning, turned into a 14-hour marathon procedure. “The nurses were good at giving us updates every two hours, but by five o’clock, the waiting area started to thin out and we began to worry,” Mark says. “By seven o’clock, we were one of the few families left.”
Around ten o’clock, Dr. Boland came out to tell the Furmans that while the surgery had gone well, the tumor being removed with good margins, they were having some difficulty stopping the bleeding. At 11 o’clock, they received word that the bleeding had been stopped. When they spoke with Dr. Boland at 1:00 am, he explained that the chemo had shrunk the tumor much more than he had initially expected. He said he had worked hard to preserve the S2 and L5 nerves, but to remove the entire tumor he had had to cut the S1 nerve. Still, he felt very positive about Yehuda’s chances to maintain function.
Full Lower-Body Cast, Post-Surgery Chemo, and Finally, Success
After recovering from the marathon surgery, Yehuda was placed in a full lower-body cast to straighten his leg and to protect the structure at the base of the spine supporting the lower limbs. His legs were separated in the cast by a sawed-off broomstick. “He couldn’t sit up,” Mark remembers. “He couldn’t roll over. He couldn’t do anything. It was rough.” Miriam agrees, “It was nuts, but we would use the broomstick as a handle. You’d put one arm beneath his back and one hand on the broomstick and that’s how we would carry him. We’d have to go through doors sideways!”
Yehuda received three cycles of postsurgery chemotherapy, which was meant to kill any remaining cancer cells. The final cycle was completed in November 2005, approximately six months after he was diagnosed. He was walking again by February. More than three years later, not only can Yehuda walk, he runs, jumps, and climbs just like any other healthy nine-year-old boy.
Yehuda has made an extraordinary and near-total neurologic recovery. I was privileged to see him running around camp with his mischievous smile, being just a ‘regular’ kid, less than two years after his surgery.
When asked if they have any advice for other families going through a similar cancer experience, the Furmans are realistic. “The good news is, when you’re going through this hugely traumatic experience, it’s all sort of a blur,” Mark recounts. “You’re so caught up in the survival aspect of everything that you just do whatever needs to be done. We never really sat down and discussed how crazy everything we went through was until much later, when it was all over with. Which is how you survive it. Getting as much information as you possibly can also helps. As a parent, you have to be your child’s best advocate.”
“And you need to go to a place with experts in treating your child’s cancer,” Mark adds. “That’s why we went to Memorial Sloan Kettering. Dr. Boland and Dr. Wexler saved our son’s life. We will be forever indebted to them both.”
