So much has been made of the prosthetic nose affixed to Bradley Cooper for his portrayal of Leonard Bernstein. (The upcoming film, "Maestro.") Very beaky, bringing to mind the nose issued to Nicole Kidman when she was supposed to look like Virginia Woolf. ("The Hours".) Note that the chosen actor doesn't HAVE to look too much like the person s/he is supposed to portray. I mean Dustin Hoffman as Lenny Bruce, Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill...etc. The Lenny movie has been preceeded by a preview (trailer). The underscoring is Mahler. The nose, Mahler... all of this rather eerie. Bernstein's three children have said they don't mind the (Cyrano) nose. Stay tuned.
The idea is to watch a bit of baseball. Somehow the (struggling) Yankees aren't being shown (?). I find (my favorite underdog) the Angels. Ohtani hits a grand slam. They pull off a triple play (!). And still they manage to lose, in extra innings.
Try to sleep. More of those dreams...lost music...find the music (to an opera) but it is mutilated and has pages missing. THAT again.

At last it's a bit cooler.
Bannon has made a fiery speech at Mike Lindell's little hate fest in Springfield, Missouri. This is serious stuff. A powder keg. Mike Fylnn there, the QAnon guy. This rally, called Election Crime Bureau Summit (wow, what names they pick for this stuff). Bannon threatens Fani Willis. No surprise, this. Also Governor Kemp.
The Yankees lose their seventh in a row. Talk of a "Fire Cashman" night. Unhappy fans.
to be continued

Mank Review
Tumblr media
Mank is directed by David Fincher and written by his late father Jack Fincher. The film features an ensemble cast that stars Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tuppence Middleton, Tom Burke, Joseph Cross, Jamie McShane, Toby Leonard Moore, Monika Gossmann, and Charles Dance. The film follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Oldman) and his struggle to write one of the most well revered films of all time, Citizen Kane. Flashbacks in the film reveal and take an in depth look at his relationship to the film industry years prior along his friendship with Marion Davies (Seyfried) and William Randolph Hearst (Dance). David Fincher is my favorite director and I’m beyond pleased to have a new film of his come out, it’s been years since he made a film. What better way after years of not making films to come back with a film that’s about old Hollywood and about one of the greatest films ever made.
As anyone might expect Gary Oldman shines in this film and delivers another great performance. Oldman’s performance may feel familiar to other performances he’s done in the past, but it’s nonetheless entertaining to watch particularly in scenes where he's full on drunk. Now the true star of performances in this film goes to Amanda Seyfired. I don’t know much about Marion Davies, but the performance Seyfired gives embodies that of a Hollywood actress of the 1930’s and 40’s. She’s gleaming with light and positivity that you can’t help but fall head over heels for her and want to get to know and hang out with her. It’s the best performance I’ve seen from Seyfired and I hope the Academy can recognize her once Oscar season comes around. There’s a great ensemble around these two with memorable scenes from just about everyone in the film.
Mank is shot in black and white and feels like a movie made from the 1930’s and 40’s. I appreciate Fincher for making that a focal point of the film and not just having it colored and feeling like it’s your standard period piece drama. The score from Trent Reznor and Attiucs Ross in this film is fantastic and continues to show why this duo works so well with Fincher. They scrap their usual synth based style and make music that is of the time period and it’s one of the duo's most unique films scores to date. Along with the score, costumes, cinematography, editing, and even transitions between scenes makes the film be more than just a period piece, but a film that takes you back in time to the 1930’s and 40’s. Mank is a mix of old school Hollywood film making mixed with some twenty-first century film making and the blending of the two styles felt seamless.
Now this film will not be for everyone as there is a slow pace to it with lots of dialogue. It’s also not entirely about the making of Citizen Kane either and at times is about the politics of Hollywood and studios of that era. It can be hard to follow if you're not engaged or drawn into what’s going on as the film may just come off as boring for some. For myself, Mank kept me engaged throughout due to the director and everything else I mentioned above and how I felt this film transported me to a different era of Hollywood. I appreciate what this film was able to do for me as an avid lover of film. Mank shines a light and gives a new perspective to audiences about the inception of Citizen Kane and how Mankiewicz drew seeds from his time in Hollywood to write that story.
