nothing good in the music tag today it's all antonoff-produced sabrina carpenter and like two aurora and charli xcx posts. as if tems and peggy gou didn't both drop albums today that you're going to be hearing on the radio at the grocery store and in the club for the rest of the year. i keep forgetting none of you actually go to the club. my bad. i thought you guys liked olafur eliasson. pitchfork panned peggy gou (6.2, wrong as usual) and linked to a 170-view youtube upload of an obscure soichi terada release come on it's funny. we don't have time to unpack all that
cd players are back on trend because a kpop group figured out how to market the thing they used to do for music reviewers (so they would stop reselling rare prereleases with the barcode sawed out) where they glue the cd player shut so you can only listen to one cd and you can't take it out. $100. sold out. it's a clear case though! you can see the motherboard and everything. i don't actually know that it's glued shut but i would bet money
and in my pointless superpower, googling "what happened to musician" a day before they release something new, alice longyu gao is back with a new single. raye is doing some kind of bible themed orchestral 7min track in three acts idk what's going on there. i will say she is nailing swing. noga erez track would be a serve if it had more than one lyric. some of you probably want to know about the orville peck single. omar apollo album probably going to be good but i'm tired of advance previews. like if it's done and shipped just drop it already. whatever. i'm going back to tierra whack shower song. sound of summer everybody with summer releases is coming across tryhard. either put the concept together or don't. if junglepussy and leikeli47 don't come back it's shaping up to be a flop year

HONORABLE MENTION
Beyoncé - RENAISSANCE
I know it’s coming... *hands on hips* “Honorable mention?!?”
I just can't listen to Renaissance straight through. I’ve tried and tried and tried. When it comes to my listening experience, I approach music sonically first, following the story and arrangement of the music instruments, and how the timbre of one's singing or rapping meets and interweaves between those elements. Give me an audio painting with a tapestry of enthralling colors and textures that I can feel. Then I'll invite in the lyrics.
It's like cinema. The average person most likely follows the eyes of the camera as it relates to the dialogue for the cinematic story. The way my brain is wired 🤖 I have to separate a number of other elements into parts as the story moves along — from the color grading and lighting to the sound design and mise-en-scène — to fully understand the director's vision and grasp the actual tale.
The thing about Renaissance as a whole is that it doesn't breathe enough for me. It feels chaotic like a tide than a flow if I let it run straight through. Give me spatial, darling! But that's the intentional, heavy-handed part about Renaissance, especially on the heels of a post-pandemic world: "Get tf up, dance and feel good." I don't wanna dance; I just wanna listen 😩 lol
Side note:
We all have a specific musical palette as to why we fully gravitate to some songs/albums and not to others. I posted my review of Susan Roger’s book, This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You, a few months ago. (She was Prince's sound engineer from 1983 to 1988.) If you’re curious about why you like the music you like, I recommend for you to read it.

recent music takes:
how are people still ignorant about Rage Against the Machine. no they aren't vague about what the machine is. capitalism, war, colonialism, the prison industrial complex... theres this tweet i saw on fb about how op hopes rage against the machine is raging against like a printer or something and it pisses me off so bad bc like rage against the machine might not have a song titled "the machine" with lyrics "the machine we're raging against is the us empire" but they've honestly come pretty close to saying that
other take that isn't so whiny: Kimbra good?? can we talk abt kimbra maybe a lil more
special third take as a treat: women rappers get so little praise for the work they do so please do yourself a favor if you're reading this and go listen to Leikeli47, whether or not you have in the past. any of her music is good, though the album Acrylic is my personal fav. Princess Nokia is also really good--No Effort and Sugar Honey Iced Tea come to mind as song recs

There are entire canons built off women’s legacy in rap. Lil Kim’s legendary squat for her Hardcore album cover — on which she was both figuratively and literally sex-forward — has been imitated, duplicated, and honored ad infinitum. MC Lyte’s classic “10% Dis” — in which the Brooklyn native opens with a disgusted “Hot damn, hot damn, hot damn, hot damn, Hot damn, hot damn, hot damn, hot damn, Hot damn, ho, here we go again” — found new life in Kim’s searing guest verse on Mobb Deep’s “Quiet Storm (Remix)”: “hot damn ho, here we go again/lyte as a rock, bitch, hard as a cock, bitch.” MC Sha-Rock introduced the echo-chamber effect, a stacking tool that cascaded words as if they reverberated through a room; it would eventually be adopted by Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-DMC. While Rocawear and Sean John were in full swing, it was women who catapulted hip-hop into high fashion, storming the red carpets with Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Versace, and Chanel before name-dropping luxury brands became standard issue in rap verses. That we’re even having this conversation in the year 2023, perhaps the most exciting time to be a fan of women in rap, speaks to how resistant the industry seems to be to rhapsodizing about the genre in terms of more than feats of masculinity. A fan of lyrically dense and cerebral wordplay? Explore the extensive discographies of Rapsody, Chika, and Noname. Maybe theatrical explorations of musical performance are more your thing? Tierra Whack, Leikeli47, Monaleo, Rico Nasty, and cupcakKe are right up your alley. Pussy Rap is available in spades, too: City Girls, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, Cardi B, KenTheMan, and many others have records upon records upon records of sex-forward, sex-positive thrilling songwriting. The girls who keep it southern and ghetto are wide-ranging, from BbyMutha to SexyyRed to GloRilla. Maliibu Miitch and Lola Brooke harness sonics from New York’s ’90s superstars, while the Bronx’s Ice Spice has made a name for herself injecting a delicate cadence to the more contemporary drill sound. Flo Milli has trademarked a uniquely bratty approach to her delivery. Nicki Minaj regularly drops feature after feature showcasing her near-unparalleled versatility as the resident legend.

Album Review Tom Morello: The Atlas Underground (Oct. 12, 2018) Rating: 70/100 I'm not going to be as harsh on this record as some reviewers have been. Some of the beat styles featured on The Atlas Underground were done and done better by artists like Aphex Twin 30 years ago, and the other digital effects that masquerade as music ruined potentially good tracks like How Long, Battle Sirens, Vigilante Nocturno and Lead Poisoning and weighed down the whole. That said, beyond the first track, Rabbit's Revenge was a killer tune, and while Every Step That I Take is not my cup of tea, it has a good chorus melody. The same can be said for We Don't Need You. Find Another Way with Marcus Mumford and Lucky One with K.Flay might be the best pure songs on the record, and I like the flow and style of Leikeli47 on Roadrunner. I had never heard her before, but she gives me Tupac vibes in how she delivers the lyrics. As for Tom Morello, many of his riffs and pedal sounds don't really add anything new to the equation, and it feels like we've heard all of this before, even though nothing is wrong with any of it. But he has a certain familiar style, and he sticks to it here. Fans of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, almost to the person I bet, prefer just straightaway rock without all the digital mumbojumbo that pervades much of this record and drags down the rest of it. It is possible that he is, as some have claimed, shamelessly pandering, but being familiar with Rage's music and his contributions to it, Morello doesn't seem like the pandering type, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and conjecture that Morella attempted to bridge a musical gap - admittedly, with mixed results - across generations. Whatever the case, fans of his earlier two bands can find some elements that they like in this record if they give it a chance. (I edited this for space. A link to all my reviews is in the bio.) #music #musicreview #musicreviewer #newmusic #newmusicfriday #tommorello #alt #altrock #alternative #alternativerock #album #albumreview #record #recordreview #indie #indierock #rock #rockreview (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj0qCwMOCkx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Song Lyric Titles
sugar, you were set up to fail- this is from Black Sheep by Blue kid. The whole song reminds me of Jason, but I chose this lyric in particular because it feels condescending and harshly affectionate, perfect for Selina.
take my heart (take it apart)- this is from Body by Mother Mother, I think the actual lyric is ‘take my heart, pull it apart’. Jason in this fic is so uncomfortable in his body. I also love the idea of it being a command. Jason would tell Dick to hurt him, he expects him to, he wants him to get it over with already.
So what if I’m not ok? series- I’m not OK by the weathers. I really like the picture of a relationship despite mental instability that this song paints. If i’m not ok, can we still make this work? and it’s the perfect premise for a series of jaydick drabbles.
love to praise me, hate me, shame me - this is from wasabi by little mix. It’s honestly just a great title for a pwp, especially one that plays with both elements of shame and body worship.
you can turn the keys and drive - I wanted to use a lyric that had something to do with cars for this one, so I asked the giftee what her favorite bands were and went hunting. Lots of taylor swift lyrics were considered but ultimately the winner was from Going Home by the Aces.
Too Much is Never Enough - this is just another great pwp title, this time from the cult of dionysus by the orion experience. Honestly every line in that song would make a good fic title, 10/10.
the world moves away from you- this is a translation of a lyric ‘Le monde s’éloigne de toi’ from Henri Michaux’s Je Rame. I love the brutality of that song. To me, it’s depression, the feeling of everything going tits up and all you feel is numb. This lyric in particular really spoke to me because it’s the feeling that everyone else is moving on while you are still trying to cope with things that happened in the past. That’s where Tim is at in this fic.
I wanna, I wanna touch you (you wanna touch me too)- I wanna by the all-american rejects. god this is the perfect JayDick song (don’t throw me away, just put your hands on me, our love’s the perfect crime). And the physicality of the title really encapsulates the way they communicate in the fic. They don’t talk about their feelings. They let their bodies speak.
the way she make them angles hit - post that by Leikeli47. Perfect song for a photographer and her muse, inspired the fic.
all I ever wanted was the world  - primadonna girl by marina. Listen, you might see two scraggly ass hockey men but they’re actually primadonna girls your honor. I’m playing with the idea that if you’re drafted first overall you’re expected to win, all you want (the expectation that you’re going to get it, that it’s a small thing) is the world (something very few people get, something so big and special and rare).
I can feel your heart beat under my skin - under my skin jukebox the ghost. This started because everyone always talks about Matthew getting under his opponents skin, and then this song snuck the fuck up on me. Like I love the slightly unhinged physical imagery, Johnny can ‘fit two people under [his] skin’ he wants ‘to be enough to fill [Matthew’s] heart with music’.

Leikeli47, Shape Up
New music Wednesday
The third album –the final chapter in her beauty trilogy series– is heroic and gruff, versatile and accomplished. The mysterious Brooklyn rapper tools are sub-basses, pulsing beats, humor, sharp lyrics and R&B glows, all those elements keep her stunning sound crisp and current.
