Fun fact, flamingos are pink because of the algae and brine shrimp in their diet. While I don't color my drawings, Toshiko is a very dull pink but without any algae or shrimp, she's slowly losing her pink throughout the killing game

Why I Don’t Like Juno

⚠️Please note that this is my personal opinion on Juno as a character and how I think she could have been handled differently. This is not an attack on anyone who loves Juno or ships her with other characters in any way shape or form! ⚠️

Feel free to ignore me if you’d like! 😅

Firstly, Juno doesn’t contribute to the plot of Beastars in any meaningful way. Yeah she’s in the Meteor festival dance and all but she’s not involved in saving Haru, fighting Riz, capturing Melon or the Turf War. All she does is try to get Louis to come back (which he doesn’t) and lets Legoshi look into her mouth (which I just don’t get because couldn’t Legoshi just google that kind of info?).

I also don’t understand the whole relationship she has with Louis. She first had a crush on Legoshi but when that didn’t turn into anything she just starts liking Louis?

They never really have much meaningful interaction and when they do I can’t tell if Louis actually likes her or if he just likes hanging out and talking to her as a friend. I mean they did kiss and all but, since we don’t really see them often enough or how their relationship went from sort of rivals, to friends, to romance, it never feels genuine or like real love.

Finally and most annoying to me is that Juno basically has no personality other than what she wants (to be the beastar, be with Legoshi, be friends dad with Louis). We know she has friends and hangs out with them outside of Cherryton, that she felt segregation between herbivores and carnivores wasn’t a bad thing, and that she joined the Drama Club but we know nothing about her home life, her interests outside of all that, why and how she got into Drama Club, etc.

Again, my opinion and all, but I think we can all agree any character needs a motivation for what they do and what they want in the story:

Why does Juno want to be the beastar in the beginning?

What are her struggles and how does she deal with them?

Why was she neutral about the whole separation of herbivore and carnivore students?

What is her relationship like with her family and what her home life is like?

Why was it so important for her to be in a relationship with a guy (first Legoshi, a grey wolf, and then Louis)?

No, even better! What made Juno change her mind about being in a relationship with a carnivore and being open to a relationship with an herbivore?

What are the circumstances of her life that lead her to being scouted for the Drama Club in the first place?

There may be answers to some of these questions but Juno is not seen enough to elaborate on them or to make them memorable for her character.

Now! Juno is shown to be bold and strong when she wants to be. We saw that when she pinned Louis to the ground to get her point about wanting to be the beastar across (and about her wanting Legoshi too I guess) but that’s the only time we really see that.

She’s also shown to be very outspoken and not afraid to speak her mind when angry (confronting Haru, confronting Legoshi, demanding the Shishigumi to let her see Louis) and that she was bullied in middle school but these things still lead nowhere or are not expanded on in other scenes with her.

To sum this up, Juno is yet another Beastars character who didn’t have enough time for her to grow as a character and because of that she wastes time when she does show up as she never contributes to the plot and has virtually no personality. This would have been avoided or helped if Paru had A) given her more time, included her in major plot points, and let her grow and contribute when it most made sense, or B) just let her graduate to a side character and let Haru stay relevant at season 2.

If there was a scale of character and plot contribution of non-main characters in Beastars, it would go something like this:

1) Jack (Legoshi’s best friend, their friendship is genuine and Jack contributes to the plot by showing us more of who Legoshi is and motivating him)

2) Kyuu (has a personality and character despite not being used to her full potential, contributes to the plot by getting the Shishigumi out of the Turf War and joining them to get Louis, sort of trains Legoshi too even if Gouhin would have been a better pick)

3) Juno (doesn’t contribute to the plot and has very limited personality, goals, and development as a character)

Also, enough of Jack and Kyuu as characters has been shown for us to easily idea and picture them having their own stories and adventures outside of the main plot of Beastars. Juno is just barely shown but not enough to see her being her own character (due to knowing nothing about her but this does also make her a blank canvas for fanfic writers so make of that what you will I guess).

One more thing! Juno is, what 15-16 years old? She could have been the most normal teenage character in the series (like how does an average teen exist in the world of Beastars?).

So, let's hit the highlights!

Legoshi and Haru have a date celebrating Legoshi's birthday. It's adorable and awkward and an incredible reminder that Legoshi is a babe-magnet despite having the social skills of a mop bucket.

Louis gets to play detective this time. It's a fetching role for him.

Tao and Kibi have a moment in front of the drama class where we are reminded of when Tao accidentally Georgie'd Kibi's arm off, but how afterwards it brought them closer together because of friendship (moral of the story: if you are unsure of the strength of your friendship with someone, trydismembering them!).

Yahya uses a melon in the most longwinded way necessary to make a point about how he prefers integration through segregation. This continues from his previous carrot garden thing, leading me to believe that he perhaps keeps a lavish botanical garden solely so that he can always have whatever fruit or vegetable is necessary to illustrate whatever point he is making at the time.

Melon face reveal! Dude's a psychotic dude, but his personality is so damn fun. Not fun for Legoshi, who gets shot during their encounter and is left in a coma for his trouble.

Louis reunites with the Shishi-gumi and this entire encounter is fun and amusing until Melon shows up to ruin the mood.

Aww, more baby Legoshi! And, oh look, Legoshi's mother! I'm so glad this entire scene isn't emotionally devastating, otherwise this would devastating. Oh, oh so she killed herself because her fur was shedding, revealing her father's scales and this destroyed her sense of self so horribly that... oh, this is messed up.

[this concept is completely new, I will refine it]. Her alias - Jade. Jade is a gemstone that has the beautiful color of an emerald and the transparent charm of pearls [Leano's scales were bright green, while Miyagi's were pearly white].

"Abelia" is an elegant snow-white flower of the honeysuckle family that, beautiful in a simple and gentle way, symbolizes faithfulness and tenacity, Elisandra meaning "noble defender" or "divine grace".

— Hybrids are actually highly valued on the black market in the most horrific way... and their children, too, especially second-generation hybrid children. This happened to Miyagi when he was little, - pretty little wolf cub with cute scales like pearls...

His father Jason made it in time. That's how Abelia's second grandfather lost an eye and got a scar almost all over his face. Coriana carefully made sure that her granddaughter resembled a wolf girl as much as possible. It almost makes it feel like they're here.

When not at school does he live with Gosha or Miyagi's parents? - She lives with Gosha, but Jason and Coriana bought an apartment next to Gosha's apartment after her birth, and she often goes to spend the night with them since early childhood. We can say that Abelia lives with them all.

How do the grandparents get along? - they get along well with each other, they understand each other on a deeper level than others could ever do - their forbidden love, which turned out to be mutual, and the children who were born and whom they loved no matter what - and of course they are all united by their granddaughter, their little sun.

Random dumb headcannon:

Legoshi will end up with scales but they just haven’t appeared yet by the end of the manga. After all they appeared on his mom when she was an adult and men do usually mature at least a little slower than women.

At first he freaks out a bit but then he realizes that if he lets the stigma win and hides away like his mom then he’s just going against everything he’s fought for with Haru as well as disrespecting his grandpa and mom so he just lets it happen.

So now Bradford was a hybrid between canine and komodo as a result of his double mutation?….. why does that sound familiar?

ohhhhhhhhh, right.

Context: this is Leano, the mother of Beastars' protagonist, Legoshi. Despite being a hybrid product of the relationship between her father, a komodo dragon, and her mother, a wolf, Leano spent her whole life looking like a normal wolf, with the one exception that she was immune to his father's poison. That is, until her father's genes kicked in and scales began to cover her body. Soon after, she scoured a catalog for a sufficiently attractive wolf, arranged a one-night stand, and basically used the guy to have a child. Leano's story doesn't exactly end well, if anyone is curious, read Beastars.

As for the rest of the chapter, I knew the plan wouldn't end well. but without a doubt what was most intriguing was the conversation between Draxum and Leo, how Leo was already mentally prepared to die and how he would even be willing to consider giving up his memories just to be with Donnie again. there's so much tragedy there.

once again, this is all Draxum's fault, Fuck you, Draxum.

If Xever wasn't on his shitlist he'd absolutely roast Bradford with this.
