Ohhh, look look! It seems there's a tour of a new Coraline musical coming in the near future? 👀🪡
There's an article from The Guardian that explains more.
"The children’s fable, which found a new audience 15 years ago as a stop-motion animation by Henry Selick, has been adapted by playwright Zinnie Harris and composer Louis Barabbas.
Harris fell in love with Gaiman’s dark fantasy when reading it to her children and quickly saw its potential for the stage. Over a 12-year period, she has developed the script with James Brining, artistic director of Leeds Playhouse. They recruited Barabbas, the Skye-based frontman of the Bedlam Six, to write songs that Harris described as 'dark, spangly, clever, quirky and beautifully melodic'."
It sounds like it will be taking inspiration from the novel rather than focusing on the movie.
"'The movie is one refraction of the novel and this will be another refraction,' said Brining. 'We want to respond to the story, the spirit and the atmosphere of the novel.'"
While it's a dark storyline, the novel is still a story that's meant for kids to relate to. That depicts finding bravery to survive in a terrifying world that can make one feel overwhelmingly powerless and alone. So it's nice to see them making sure it's a family show that's fun with the star played by an actual kid.
"There will be a child actor in the lead role, their vulnerability emphasised by a cast otherwise made up of adults.
Harris added: 'At its core, the story is about working out how to be brave. It is a powerful message. We see this little girl having to take on an extraordinary adversary, who is psychologically as well as physically intimidating and she has to dig deep into her core to find a way through.'"
And the music? Gothic. (and spangly)
"[...] they had been drawn to the gothic side of the novel: 'That is partly why we felt it would be most successful with music. When the other mother turns around and she’s got buttons for eyes, there will be a heightened quality because she is singing.'
He said this is what prompted them to collaborate with Barabbas: 'His music has got a gothic quality. It’s got creepiness and wit, he can write lyrics that hold rich imagery and themes that respond to the novel. The gothic is a key characteristic of Gaiman’s work and the music will help define that atmosphere on stage.'" [full article]
It's said it'll premiere in Leeds in April 2025.
-
The novel turned 15 this year. With this and the upcoming theatrical rerelease of the movie, it looks like Coraline's getting a lot of attention.
And in case you haven't seen the new movie poster:
I just think it's neat. :)
#coraline#coraline musical#Oh dear this turned into a long info post.#Dunno why “spangly” is the funny thing to me. :)#Listen Coraline is a fun dark adventure and I love the cat.#Edit: oh no the typo...

I went to the Leeds Queer Market!
Some purchases I made and some new creators to follow.
I went along to the Leeds Playhouse this afternoon before we went to see Barbie later on, and I was super pleased to go along — they were up on one of the floors in the Playhouse where the kitchen is, with various tables set up selling arts and crafts, jewellery, prints, cacti, and so on.
The market is run by Quercus Craft, I think every month or so? And I just wanted to show off some of the things I picked up and link to the creators’ stores and social media!
---
Firstly, I picked up this gorgeous print from Matt David (they/them), who is a queer Scottish artist based out of London — a lot of their work grapples with queerness and sexuality, including safe sex and HIV awareness, but also layers of symbolism, how symbols are created and communicated, and there’s this big thematic trend of exploring the symbology around queer bodies, the ways in which they’re objectified through fellow queer gazes, to incredible effect.
I love this piece so much — Matt David has several pieces like this one where they create these layered cyanotype portraits whilst also scanning the condoms through, and because of the material of the condoms and the lubricant on them, they have this incredible shine effect on them. I adore this piece, Hey Daddy, because of the halo-like shimmer of the condom’s ring over the figure’s head, and I’m so, so excited to put this in a gold frame and hang it up in my new place once I’m moved in.
As well as these figures using condoms, they also have some beautiful colour portraiture featuring different queer heroes — I especially love this piece of Marsha P. Johnson — and do other forms of portraiture and sketches!
They’re open for commissions, as I said, and they’re also the Art Editor for Snowflake Magazine.
You can check out Matt David and purchase their work on:

I picked up a few pieces of jewellery from Abigaia (she/her), a (n English) northerner and queer witch who plays a lot with themes of nature and spirituality in her work — she’s got a big focus on using sustainable materials in her craftwork as well as in its packaging, which is so awesome to see, the values of the work itself extended to its packaging materials.
I was super excited about the variety of charms and pendants she had on show — I picked up a snake, a rainbow mushroom, and a serotonin symbol, but she had so many to choose from. On her website, you can buy a mystery charm for £4, or ask for a specific charm in the notes — she’s got a huge variety of nature-based and spiritual symbols, including different animals, traditional websites, flora and mushrooms, a few chemical structures, and different pagan religious symbols.
If you love tarot, she’s also got some gorgeous earring sets featuring different tarot cards!
You can check out Abigaia and purchase her work on:

From Nad (she/they), I only picked up a pair of pronoun stickers for my partners, but you should absolutely check out the broad array of their work!
Nadya Griendroheru is an Indonesian artist and illustrator who just creates some absolutely gorgeous examples of character design — they have a really awesome flow and use of colour in their work with exaggerated angles and features, bright yellows, oranges, reds, greens, with a real sense of movement and personality conveyed in each print and piece.
She had a bunch of different Breaking Bad characters with pronouns printed on them (except for the one of Hank, which says ACAB), just like this one, and I just thought they were hilarious.
You can check out and browse more of Nad’s artwork on:

PRALER is the Planet Repairs Action Learning Educational Revolution, which is a big initiative building and promoting resistance and organisational networks, especially to further empower communities and organisations in the Global South and to address and take apart miseducation elsewhere, especially in regards to dismantling white supremacist and imperialist systems and propaganda.
You can check out more about PRALER on their website here:
Melany was selling incense they make themselves, and also bags from Mochilas para sanar, a platform for selling mochilas by indigenous Colombian creators, Mama Zenchina and Haba Ulaca, with 80% of proceeds going to the creators and 20% going to Somos Semillas, an organisation dedicated to educating about and collating resources for the Abya Yala diaspora.
The bags are handwoven from cactus fibres and you can see them on the Mochilas para sanar Instagram!
They’re also going to be at the Queer Carboot on Sheaf Street tomorrow (30 July 2023), so if you’re based in Leeds and you’re upset you missed the Queer Market, absolutely go along and seek them out!
---
I don’t think that they have any of their earrings available for sale on their online store at the moment, but if you do see them selling in person anywhere, they do a variety of earrings like this one, as well as geckos and lizards, frogs, candies and sweets, and they’re very cute! They also had on the stall a range of badges and stickers, little ornaments, and so on.
Build Your Jungle UK produce a lot of resources and guides to cultivating and looking after tropical plants at home, as well as creating some utterly gorgeous prints and stickers showing different varieties of plants and foliage, and also frogs!
The creators, Sofi (they/them) and Han (they/he) both have backgrounds in graphic design, so they collaborate on making these gorgeous illustrative posters and stickers of different plants you might cultivate in the home, and the pieces are just so vibrant and alive in their use of popping colour and really clean linework that makes every piece seem to pop right off the page.
You can find more from Build Your Jungle UK, check out their educational resources, and buy prints and stickers on:

FAS3003 Lord of the Flies references
In order to ensure my work is continuing to be related and fitting to the text, I decided to look at previous productions of Lord of the Flies, particularly in exploring how they are contrasted or similar.
The first I looked at was the 1990 film directed by Harry Hook and how his adaptation was a far more direct translation from Goldings text. Above is a photo of the cast in their costume, which evidently relies more on makeup than costuming in order to communicate the gravity of the boy's situation. In some ways, I can take inspiration from this by looking at the placement and styles of the makeup used for the actors, using them to translate these natural degradation forms on my costume. However, it is important to note that an adaptation of the original text varies significantly to the futuristic play adaptation that I am working from. Hence, I plan to focus more on the setting and tone of the film more than the costume.
When exploring Lord of the Flies further, I discovered a recent review of a Lord of the Flies production at the Leeds Playhouse. Above is a photo of the production, which is clearly far more aligned to what the Rep is producing than the 1990 film explored above. I particularly like the breaking down of the shorts worn by the actor in the centre of the photo; with a raw hem and shorter style, the costume more visibly communicates the length of time in which they have been in this situation. An aspect of distressing that I had overlooked was the use of blood, which is clearly the main factor in the Leeds productions costumes. This is something I shall explore further, particularly as they fight and kill animals over the course of the play.
To further my development, I shall further explore the most effective ways in which I can break down the costume, particularly over the course of the play. I shall achieve this through sampling and experimentation, alongside further research, in order to ensure the breaking down of the costume looks natural and realistic. I shall also finalise my designs to hopefully begin pattern cutting.
Love, C (2023) Lord of the Flies review- school staple is bang up to date for world on the brink. Available at: https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2023/mar/24/lord-of-the-flies-review-leeds-playhouse [accessed 24 April 2023]

I love love LOVEE stageplays of LOTF, one of my personal favorite production is Leeds playhouse. The set, the costumes. The CAST is omg so so good.
This production is consistently spinning in my head, mainly Jack in this production!! My man is tall and lengthy and just TOWERS over everyone it’s so silly to me, and the actor just really understand this character so so much. There’s a whole video of the actor talking about Jack and what it’s like to play him, he even quotes “I think the Jack people are going to see in this production is actually different to the Jack in the book.” When people put twists on characters, it just brings me so so much joy. (There’s also videos of Ralph and Piggy’s actors talking abt their characters!)
AND another thing I love about this production is the fact they use BSL, both Sam and Eric are deaf and it’s just so so good. I wish sign language was used more in plays. Giving deaf actors a shining light <3
This also made me headcanon BOTH Sam and Eric as hard of hearing, as they communicate together using BSL. but yeah!! I wish we had a bootleg, but all we have is the cast and photos <\3
