Assistant Manager Kim Ryujin. She looked scary. Almost as if she would choke someone to death for looking at her a little too long.

Sure, she was dressed mostly in pyjamas, but she joined this winter— one month since joining. People tended to leave her out, but she didn't seem to care.

I looked above from my computer screen to look towards her cubicle desk. She wasn't there, but I assumed where she probably was— smoking or maybe out to buy cigarettes.

Her personality just screamed 'murder' and the fact that she was half-Australian wasn't any help.

Her looks were top notch and she probably knew it too.

There were only a few people who ever confessed to liking her. She was like a workplace celebrity.

I stood up from my chair and stretched, "I'll be back after a walk!" I announced to the others who nodded or smiled.

There was a smoking room in the company so I made sure to pass from there to check on her.

She wasn't there.

Confused, I went to the cafeteria in hopes of finding her there.

I was right about her location, but I wasn't so right about her personality, it seemed.

She was laughing with the cafeteria lady and drinking chocolate milk.

It was very different from her usual self. She looked beautiful. Her smile was pretty. Her laugh was enticing.

I walked over to the counter unconsciously and snapped out of the entrancement when the café lady walked over and asked if I was there for early lunch.

"Oh—No. No." I passed a nervous smile, "If you don't mind asking, I just saw her with the chocolate milk and wanted to know if we added it to the menu?"

She shook her head, "It's not on the menu. Maybe you could ask her?" The lady smiled back.

I looked back at her and saw her scrolling through her phone with the serene expression back on her facial features. The chocolate milk box crushed between her other fist.

I noticed that she was wearing the same grey hoodie that had little black cat doodles all over it. Her formal pants and shirt were basically non-existent under that huge blanket of a hoodie.

I walked over slowly, and she immediately looked over after I took a step.

"Hi!" I waved and walked over, "Where did you get the milk? If you dont mind me asking?" I mumbled the last part when I saw a slight frown on her.

"Convenience store." She stood up and left after a slight bow.

"That was... rude?" I mumbled and left scratching my head.

"Company outing!?" Lee Hyejin was practically jumping next to me.

"Calm down Ms. Lee!" I laughed.

"I can't!" She was basically shivering in excitement.

We laughed in the break room while having some coffee.

The company outing was announced an hour ago and Hyejin couldn't sit straight since.

"Do you know what the first prize was last year? A villa stay in Bali! They said it was awesome!" Hyejin spoke with all her energy it seemed.

She was the youngest joining and somehow knew everything.

Ryujin stepped into the breakroom and suddenly everyone was silent.

She took a packet of salt and left without a word.

"What's up with her?" Park Baekwon pointed.

"Oh, maybe she's partially deaf." Hyejin spoke sipping her coffee, "She joined with me but she's far better than anyone who's worked for over five years!" All were shocked and Hyejin sighed, "She is used to American Sign Language but is learning Korean and Korean Sign at the same time."

"How do you know all that?" Baekwon asked.

"We talked in orientation and training but her girlfriend cheated—" Hyejin realised what she had spoken, "I shouldn't have said that..." She mumbled and started gulping her coffee in guilt.

Ryujin waved at someone.

The man seemed surprisingly pleased and waved back with a few signs.

She was communicating with him.

Maybe I could learn sign language.

The rest of the day, different teams were doing different tasks preparing a good camping area and food.

I learnt something new about Ryujin— she has unbelievable stamina. She had been carrying stuff back and forth between the bus and the campsite with the others but didn't break a sweat unlike them.

The campsite was a little afar from the roads so the busses were parked in a resort where the chairman had booked himself a room for the night.

There was a rumour that the chairman was allergic to pollen, so he never stepped out of his car during camping or stayed at the nearest hotel.

"Flip the meat! You'll burn it!" Hyejin scolded and saved the piece in my hands, "What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing... just the few things I've heard."

Hyejin raised her eyebrow but continued working with the food preparations.

After games and singing, there were two winners, Park Baekwon and Lee Hyejin.

They had won a month's vacation in Jeju.

Hyejin was over the moon, "Month's work and month's vacation!? I wish the company did these outings every day!"

Baekwon was ecstatic too, "When was the last time I partied!?" He cheered and went to drink with the other men.

I saw Ryujin sitting at a bench and typing away continuously at her screen with an angered expression.

I walked over, and like usual, she noticed me from afar. It was hard to believe she was partially deaf.

"Why did you not participate?" I asked, "You seem pretty athletic."

"I didn't want to go to Jeju." She replied simply.

"I heard you are partially deaf," I smirked after seeing that she had no hearing aids, "But you seem fine to me."

"What if I want something else?"

She fiddled with her ears and stood up, "I dropped them it seems." She sat back down, "I'll be direct— how much money do you want to hide this fact?"

It seemed that Ryujin wasn't someone ordinary at all.

She was the Chairman's younger granddaughter— the one who had been rumoured to have rebelled and ran away to her maternal aunt.

"What else do you want to know? Hmm?" She hummed against my neck.

"How far will you g-go!?—" Her sudden bite at my neck took me off guard, making me moan.

baekwon is a ‘go with the flow’ kind of man. when selene spent that summer in jeju and he fell madly in love, it really opened his eyes. sure, he was heart-broken when she left, but they were teens. he moved on, and even better, now he knew he wanted to be out there, wandering the world.

it was years later doing just that when he ran into harmonia. they were really similarly-minded so things between them were very casual, until she came to him with a child. she disappeared just as quickly and suddenly baek had to figure out parenting, quick.

when he bumped into selene again, jae was already two and selene was pregnant. in reconnecting, though, they rekindled things very quickly and it’s only the logical next step for baekwon to lock things down right there and promise to raise selene’s child as his own. just like that.

selene comes from a family of prestige in the fashion world. with her grandfather’s money, her dad started the angier fashion house, but selene is the one who really pushed them to global success. she still designs for angier proper, on which her full name is credited, and runs things from belgium.

speaking of angier, every few years they update their global ambassador with the hottest up-and-coming icon and it’s a highly vetted position. the current ambassador is nl’s own freya waldron, or freja!

until recently, jae and charlie were both under the impression they were half-siblings who shared a dad. they’re still kind of fucked up about being lied to for their entire lives, but they’re still a tightly-knit duo. charlie will always be jae’s baby sister, and you can fight him on that.

using nepotism to her advantage, selene got baekwon a cushy job in a subsidiary company where he manages employee relations. they were both shameless about it but he’s a trophy husband now, he doesn’t give a fuck about shame!

actually, speaking of nepotism, jae is the only one allergic to it. charlie didn’t have any weird hangups about skipping all the boring steps to work where she wants to and she’s actually an incredible asset to angier, so who exactly is gonna tell her that she’s wrong?

jae, on the other hand, kept the angier out of his name from an early age to prove he could get where he wanted on skill alone. he worked his way up the industry ladder until it was impossible to keep his family name secret, but by then it was obvious he knew what he was doing.

he doesn’t use it at nl, though, because he never got out of the habit. anyone there who knows anything about the angiers already knows who he is, and those who don’t, won’t care, so why bother bringing it up?

the angier family and the arnault family (of louis vuitton) are the two most influential families in the french fashion community, so natually, they have a long ongoing beef / rivalry that spans generations.

jae’s biggest and last job was when he worked for louis vuitton (lol) and when he essentially had a breakdown in the middle of work and then ghosted them, the arnaults had him blacklisted. it’s why he can’t get work in fashion anymore, not that it’s stopped him from trying.
