"mercury shine" tutorial
i didn't know you guys @occultradio and @aliengirl would want a tutorial on what was a genuine fuckup on my part, but i love how excited it got you, so here you go! your tutorial! you can now make alien clothes and funky face details!
1. by default, the shape of the mask (the right black and white one) is based exactly on diffuse texture, so just export it and edit the part that doesn't say mask. if the item you want to edit doesn't have it, you can click on make blank to generate it (the specular itself will be empty).
2. for your own convenience, resize the diffuse texture (any swatch where you can see elements of the texture very well) and put it under your specular map while you work on it, because the placement of elements on specular map correlates with the main texture, and if you make patterns and standing out elements with your specular, like shiny buttons or leather belts or anything, you want to see where they are on the texture. 3. so as you may know, the specular texture depends on the color (like metallic shine for accessories will be yellowish, leather shine will be purple-pinkish, bigger opacity = stronger shine). make areas you want to have the "mercury shine" pure white (#ffffff)! 4. the opacity of white in this case seems to not matter, 100% and 10% opacity white yielded the same result when i tested it, probably because unlike different opacity of colors, white on white doesn't really change the hue :) so if your clothes are supposed to have mercury parts and non-mercury parts, i guess the easiest way to make a specular texture would be just slapping solid white parts/patterns on top of your usual specular if you use any. this way, if it's solid, you won't need to erase parts of non-mercury specular underneath, which makes for less dirt and loose pixels on the final thing. 5. WARNING! if parts of your specular go outside of the white area on the mask, next time you'll use the item in cas, this mask will be rewritten based on your specular map, and you'll have shining blotches on sim's skin and anywhere you don't need them, so don't forget to erase everything else. just put the mask png on top of the specular you've made (it's the same size anyway), select all black areas and then delete the selection on your specular.
you can check this test file if you want to disassemble it and take a look at the specular, just notice that studio doesn't show the shine, you'll need to open cas to see the result of your work.

Happy WBW! I want to know about the clothes in your world! What is a typical outfit for your OC(s)? Are clothes typically made from a single type of fabric, or is there a variety? If so, does the availability of these fabrics vary by location or social class?
~tabswrites
Happy WBW, Tess!
Oh man I have to keep this to a minimum here haha because otherwise the answer will be too long winded!
What is a typical outfit for your OC(s)?
Mariel: She typically wears dresses that go about mid-shin length, simple leather shoes or sandals, and might have a cloak on if it's cold! If she's doing any kind of chore, she usually has an apron on.
Axtapor: He usually wears baggy trousers, some kind of sash around his waist (looks like a skirt kind of??), simple shirt, and a coat. No shoes here! Lizardfolk don't wear them.
Fay: She likes to wear very deep cut blouses and fitted trousers with some kind of boot. She also likes big belts and her favorite accessory besides her sapphire necklace are the bones she wears in her hair.
Wilkes: He is very stylish and put together so he usually wears the billowy and expensive robes that are worn in the Holtep Empire along with the traditional pants that are part of the ensemble.
Are clothes typically made from a single type of fabric, or is there a variety? If so, does the availability of these fabrics vary by location or social class?
There is a huge variety in the fabrics that exist in Oepus! Silk, velvet, cotton, linen, jute, hemp, wool, and many more! These are often combined in the outfits that people wear to accommodate the seasons and the climate of where they live. As far as availability, I think its a bit of both social class and location. For example, Masgul linen is a special export from the island of Kotan, that is widely considered to be less fine than other linen weaves but because it is only made on Kotan, it's cost can be quite high unless you're a local! So if you find someone wearing it outside of Kotan, you can assume they are probably pretty wealthy. Which makes it interesting when people of Kotan travel because everyone thinks they're stuck up lol.

What Are The Use of Leather
Leather
Leather is far and wide – in our shoes, our pocketbooks and luggage, our downtime jackets and swish cabinetwork – but its effect is seen encyclopedically.
To produce Deluxe Leather for our apparel, homewares, and other purposes, billions of cows are massacred each time. There are numerous different uses for leather as it's a protean material. It's both durable and fashionable, and thus its operations are nearly endless and that is shared by Deluxe Leather Goods Exporter.
still, especially apparel and footwear, be sure find a original professional that can regularly treat and watch for your collection, If you presently enjoy leather products.
Then are 13 different shared by Deluxe Leather Accessories Manufacturer uses for leather, some of which are presently current while others are more literal in nature.
Full Grain Leather
Uses Saddlery, shoes and thrills, upholstery.
parcels Full grain leather includes the top split of the hide and may include the corium. Full grain from adult creatures is relatively thick, indeed if it includes just the top- split, and is applicable for belts and defiles. Full grain from pins will be thinner and can be used in finer operations like shoes. Full grain can be made from both the external and inner subcaste of the hide which makes it particularly durable. Full grain frequently shows the natural defects of the leather, its character. It's prized for its continuity.
Top Grain Leather
Uses Handbags, watchstraps, holdalls, shoes
Properties Top grain leather is veritably analogous to full grain. It's made from the external subcaste of the hide while the corium, or the “ split ” is removed. This makes the leather easier to bepaint
and shape. It's of veritably high quality and further supple than full grain therefore constantly used for holdalls
Corrected Grain Leather
Uses Handbags, watchstraps, holdalls, shoes
Properties Corrected grain leather can be either full- grain or top- grain but, but it's filed or buffed to remove defects on the face( grain) of the hide.
Genuine Leather
Uses Belts, clothes, footwear, accessories
Properties This can come from any subcaste of the hide except the external which is reserved for full grain and top grain. Like top- grain it's filed or buffed and is easy to bepaint
and shape.
Split Grain Leather( Suede)
Uses Shoes, cabinetwork, clothes, accessories
Properties This is cut from the lower situations of the hide, occasionally left over from the creation of top- grain leather. It isn't as strong as full and top grain but it's veritably flexible and good for complicated designs. Suede leather frequently comes from the split grain. It can be fluently coloured and left with the nap or dressed to be smooth. further details then.
Due to its continuity and comfort, leather has been used for seating throughout the history of transportation and cabinetwork. It has always been the ideal material for making defiles and method, as well as footwear. During the Middle periods, leather came the cover of choice for dining chairpersons, because it was easy to maintain and didn't absorb the odor of food – a fact that's still true moment.

Ensuring Compliance with Global Regulations: The Importance of Leather Testing Labs in Dubai | +971 554747210
The leather industry plays a significant role in the global economy, supplying materials for fashion, footwear, automotive interiors, furniture, and more. For businesses operating in Dubai, which is a hub for luxury goods, import/export trade, and global commerce, compliance with international standards is essential for success. As the demand for high-quality leather products grows, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that these goods meet stringent global safety, quality, and sustainability regulations.
This is where leather testing lab come into play. Leather testing labs in Dubai serve as vital partners for manufacturers, retailers, and exporters, helping them verify that their leather products comply with various international regulations. In this blog, we will explore the role of leather testing labs in Dubai and how they ensure compliance with global standards, enabling businesses to thrive in international markets.
The Growing Importance of Leather Testing in Dubai
Dubai is a prominent global business hub, particularly for high-end fashion, luxury goods, and the leather industry. As a major player in international trade, Dubai-based companies must adhere to both local and global regulations. Leather testing labs in the city are instrumental in ensuring that leather products meet the required standards of durability, safety, and environmental compliance.
With increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly products, along with strict regulations on chemical content and product safety, manufacturers need reliable testing facilities to ensure their products are compliant. Leather testing labs in Dubai are well-equipped to handle these challenges, offering specialized testing for leather’s physical, chemical, and environmental properties.
The Role of Leather Testing Labs in Ensuring Global Compliance
Leather testing labs provide a range of services to ensure that leather products meet global regulatory standards. Below are some of the most important aspects of compliance that leather testing labs in Dubai focus on:
1. Chemical Safety and REACH Compliance
The European Union’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation is one of the most comprehensive and strict chemical safety laws in the world. It governs the use of harmful chemicals in products, including leather goods. One of the primary objectives of REACH is to protect human health and the environment from hazardous substances.
Leather products, particularly those used in fashion and footwear, often undergo treatments that may involve chemicals such as chromium VI, azo dyes, and formaldehyde. Leather testing labs in Dubai ensure compliance with REACH by testing leather products for harmful substances and certifying that they do not exceed the permissible limits.
Failure to comply with REACH regulations can result in costly fines and even bans on the sale of non-compliant products in European markets. By conducting REACH compliance testing, leather testing labs help businesses mitigate these risks and ensure the safety of their products for consumers.
2. CPSIA Compliance for U.S. Markets
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) is a set of regulations enforced by the U.S. government to ensure the safety of consumer products, including leather goods. CPSIA is particularly concerned with the presence of harmful chemicals like lead and phthalates in products used by children, such as leather footwear and accessories.
Leather testing labs in Dubai can conduct tests that ensure CPSIA compliance, helping manufacturers meet U.S. safety standards and maintain access to the lucrative American market. These labs test for a wide range of harmful substances, ensuring that leather products are safe for use by both adults and children.
3. ISO Standards for Leather Quality
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides a set of global standards for leather quality, durability, and performance. ISO standards cover various aspects of leather production, from physical properties like tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and flexibility, to chemical safety and environmental impact.
Dubai-based leather testing labs perform ISO-compliant tests to ensure that leather goods meet these rigorous international standards. By adhering to ISO standards, businesses can offer products that are recognized for their quality and reliability across global markets.
4. Environmental Compliance and Sustainability
Sustainability is a growing concern in the leather industry, as consumers increasingly seek eco-friendly products. Many countries, including those in the European Union and the United States, have strict environmental regulations that govern the production and disposal of leather goods. For example, the tanning process used in leather production can have significant environmental impacts if not managed properly.
Leather testing labs in Dubai provide environmental compliance testing to ensure that leather goods meet global sustainability standards. This includes testing for environmentally harmful substances and assessing the ecological impact of production processes.
By verifying that leather products are produced in an environmentally responsible manner, businesses can appeal to eco-conscious consumers and ensure compliance with international environmental regulations.
Key Tests Performed by Leather Testing Labs in Dubai
Leather testing labs in Dubai offer a wide range of tests to assess the quality, safety, and sustainability of leather products. Some of the most critical tests for ensuring global compliance include:
1. Chromium VI Testing
Chromium VI is a toxic substance commonly used in leather tanning. It is regulated by REACH due to its harmful effects on human health and the environment. Leather testing labs in Dubai perform chromium VI testing to ensure that leather products do not exceed the permissible levels of this hazardous chemical.
2. Azo Dyes Testing
Azo dyes are synthetic colorants used in leather products, but some types of azo dyes can release carcinogenic amines. REACH regulations strictly limit the use of certain azo dyes. Leather testing labs in Dubai test leather samples for the presence of banned azo dyes to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
3. Formaldehyde Testing
Formaldehyde is another chemical that is often present in leather products. Excessive exposure to formaldehyde can cause skin irritation and other health issues. Leather testing labs in Dubai conduct formaldehyde testing to ensure that leather goods meet safety standards and do not pose health risks to consumers.
4. Tensile Strength and Abrasion Resistance Testing
Leather products must be durable enough to withstand daily wear and tear. Tensile strength testing evaluates how much force leather can withstand before tearing, while abrasion resistance testing measures how well the leather resists surface wear. These tests are essential for ensuring the durability and longevity of leather goods, particularly in the luxury market.
5. Water and Heat Resistance Testing
Given Dubai’s hot and humid climate, leather products are often exposed to extreme conditions. Leather testing labs perform water resistance and heat resistance testing to ensure that leather products can withstand these environmental challenges without deteriorating.
6. Color Fastness Testing
In fashion, the appearance of leather is just as important as its durability. Color fastness testing ensures that the color of leather products does not fade or bleed when exposed to light, moisture, or friction. This test is particularly important for luxury leather goods, where vibrant and consistent coloring is essential.
Why Businesses in Dubai Need Leather Testing Labs
Businesses in Dubai that manufacture or import leather goods must comply with both local and international regulations to maintain their competitive edge in the global market. Leather testing labs in Dubai play a crucial role in helping these businesses ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
1. Access to Global Markets
Compliance with international standards is a prerequisite for accessing global markets. Leather testing labs in Dubai help businesses meet the regulatory requirements of different countries, including the U.S. and Europe, enabling them to expand their market reach.
2. Consumer Trust and Brand Reputation
