Surprisingly few studies have focused on the technologies that harness the labor potential of the camel from Asia to the Arabian Peninsula to West Africa. Not surprisingly, surveys of this kind are not always of much interest to many camel herders and drivers themselves.
“This is the way my father and grandfather did it,” says Adel Hamza, 55, who has offered camel rides to tourists at Egypt’s pyramids since he was a boy.
“We’re too busy working to study why something is the way it is,” says Mohammed Abd Elhay, a veterinarian in Cairo who has worked with camels.
Richard Bulliet, in his 1975 book, The Camel and the Wheel, points out that the first camel saddle was likely a blanket or an arrangement of mats, across which the weight of an equalized load on left and right could be placed.
The dromedary (one-humped) camel allows a rider to sit in front of, on top of, or behind the hump; the Bactrian (two-humped) camel is saddled between humps. It is not surprising, then, that camel saddles vary as much as the cultures that make them and the work the camels do, as well as the resources available for fabrication. Generally, in regions where wood is plentiful, one finds larger contraptions; in less resource-rich areas, designs tend to be minimalist.
Tumblr media
SomaliOne such wood-scarce region is the Horn of Africa, where the simplicity of saddlery hints at its beginnings: Here saddles are for carrying, not riding. Two pairs of poles, made from tree branches and placed over blankets, hides or grass mats, cross over and rest upon the camel’s hips and shoulders and meet on either side along the lower abdomen. According to former herdsman Abdulkarim Adhan, “Nomads have no time for decorating those sticks! Most important is that it can serve its purpose.”
Tumblr media
South ArabianEast across the Red Sea, the South Arabian camel saddle evolved with the overland incense trade, and it still finds utility throughout parts of the Arabian Peninsula. This saddle places the rider behind the hump. It employs a U-shaped pad, called mahawi in Arabic, that provides cushion, back support and a restraint to prevent the rider from sliding off. Often decorated with geometric patterns, the mahawi is secured around the camel’s flank by a woven strip of goat hair called a kfal. This in turn is tied at the front to a single- or double-arched harness often made from acacia trees. According to Hamood al-Wahiba, a Bedouin camel herder from Oman, this allows for both riding and heavy packing using woolen bags hung on each side.
It was probably in Babylonia and Assyria that camel cultures first came into contact with horse cultures, and the horse’s superiority in warfare likely gave rise to the North Arabian saddle, which is situated on top of the hump—the best position from which to fight with spear and sword. This saddle is supported by a pair of wool or canvas pads, one on each side of the hump, stuffed with grass, palm fiber or straw that level the contours of the camel’s back. Centered and closer to the camel’s head, the rider gains control.
Tumblr media
North Arabian frameThe frame for the North Arabian saddle is two upside-down, Y-shaped pieces made of tamarisk wood, tarfa in Arabic—one in front of the hump and one behind—joined by two pieces on each side. The front and back poles of this saddle can extend up high enough to hang the rider’s belongings, in one or more handwoven and often beautifully dyed saddlebags called horj.
Tumblr media
North ArabianTassels on these bags hang below the belly of the camel and sway with the camel’s gait—a decorative motif that also deflects flies. A fringed leather leg-rest pad, or meerika, stuffed with camel hair or wool, hangs from the front.
Fully bedecked, a camel carrying a Bedouin can be quite a sight. On a trek a few years ago, my Bedouin travel companion Saleh, 55, and I met a young man riding high on a camel fitted with tassels hanging from every possible place. The halter had an ornate knot of goat hair over the bridge of the nose, and the meerika was shiny and new. I asked Saleh why our camel lacked such accoutrement. He replied, “I am old and married. He’s still young and looking for a wife!”
Tumblr media
TuaregIn central North Africa, the Tuareg tirik is one of only a couple of camel saddle styles that utilize the camel’s shoulder. Its origins are a response to the need for maximum rider control, and it seats the rider forward of the hump, as near as possible to the camel’s head.
“Specialized craftsmen take three to four months combining wood and leather to create each saddle,” says Tuareg nomad Sidi Amar Taoua. Sometimes small copper bells hang from the saddle, and the varied artistic expressions give clues to region and tribe, he adds.
Tumblr media
IndianLooking eastward from Arabia, resources are comparatively plentiful in northwest India’s Rajasthan. Here the pilarn is an ornate apparatus of wood and brass with three grass-filled leather pads, one on either side of the shoulders and one behind the hump. On either side of the body, high along the rib cages, sit twin wooden runners, connected by three wooden arches over the front, middle and rear of the camel’s back. Where each piece meets is brass joinery, and the wood can be inlaid with brass, silver or stainless steel. Colorful fabric, embroidered with floral or animal motifs, is often laid over the entire saddle. This saddle can thus accommodate two passengers, one in front of the hump and the other behind. (The Indian romantic tale of Mahendra and Mumal is often accompanied by images of the couple thus seated.)
Tumblr media
BactrianIn Central Asia the two-humped Bactrian camel offers its own logic. Most commonly, a piece of fabric sits between the humps, over a pad or blanket, with two connected “fenders” hanging down each side, complete with stirrups. Ornamentation is mostly embroidery in traditional motifs.
Tumblr media
Bactrian camel packFor packing on Bactrians, gear is tied to wooden poles, one on each side that rests on rectangular wool pads stuffed with straw.
These technologies are far from all. As the roles of camel cultures diminish worldwide, the art and engineering of camel saddlery offers windows into the history of cultures that bear a deeper gaze.

K♦️ - If your muse were to start their own business, what would it be?
N’enia: A private poisonous garden for advanced botanists and alchemists to study or host functions in. Like Alnwick Castle’s Poison Garden in England! It’s just for show of course. She would prefer to teach, rather than sell her plants and alchemical concoctions.
Valyne: Valyne would pick something that would make for an easy front; a bar, brothel, maybe a gambling hall. Lots of coin upfront moving through the place at a steady rate. Though they wouldn’t be opposed to a jeweler’s boutique either for more personal (vain) interests.
Tatsuo: Definitely a saddlery or stable catering to more draconic mounts. Beautifully carved leather saddles, intricate plates of armor, bits/reins/harnesses of all sizes and shapes. The location would be cliffside to allow dragons and their riders plenty of space to try their new tack!
Ryveth: A detective/private investigation service. Their office would rarely be used as being in the field is preferred; it’d likely be a dingy, unassuming space in Solstheim.
Many were lost and more dispersed from Morrowind during the Red Year. Ryveth would want to help others that lost their kin during the mad rush to escape the eruptions. Their gift of finding people is uncanny.

Thank you so much @newsnerd-ooc!

Remember When Everything Was Made In Cincinnati?
Back in the day, Cincinnati made things. Cincinnati made lots of things. Cincinnati made so many things that Cincinnatians almost never needed anything that was not made in Cincinnati.
While Cincinnati still holds its own as a manufacturing center, our economic drivers have shifted into other sectors. According to the Port Authority, Hamilton County witnessed a 67 percent decline in manufacturing jobs since 1969.  While Cincinnati has seen healthy economic growth in recent years, almost all of that gain has been in the non-manufacturing sectors of professional and business operations, education, health care, social assistance, retail and finance.
On the contrary, a 1903 report by the Chamber of Commerce indicates Cincinnati once manufactured an immense range of products. According to the Cincinnati Post [7 September 1903]:
“Industries of special prominence include wood working machinery, machine tools, machinery and engines of every kind, vehicles, soap, metal products of every description, clothing, shoes, leather, harness and saddlery, furniture, bank, bar and office fixtures, distilling and brewing, printing, printing inks, playing cards, chemicals, pianos, lumber, pork and beef products, fireproof safes and tight cooperage.”
Tumblr media
Almost 10 years later, that was still the case. The Cincinnati Post [4 September 1911] imagined a transplanted Cincinnatian returning home to see the new Fernbank Dam:
“He entered a ‘place’ and ordered a drink, and the label on the bottle said ‘Made In Cincinnati.’ He went to a store to buy a shirtwaist for his wife . . . and the label read ‘Made In Cincinnati.’ He visited a drug store to buy throat lozenges, and the sticker on the box announced ‘Made In Cincinnati.’ What’s the use of going elsewhere, when you can get everything you want right here?”
That “Made In Cincinnati” label traveled the world. The Post [25 December 1902] itemized the sorts of Cincinnati merchandise known far beyond the Queen City:
“Cincinnati printed schoolbooks for the children of the United States. Cincinnati made shoes for millions. Cincinnati tanned leather for foreign countries. Cincinnati made pumps for England, France, Russia and Germany. Cincinnati made metal working machinery for Europe and Asia. Cincinnati furniture gladdened homes in England and Ireland. Cincinnati soap washed away the dirt in every corner of the world.”
It is a list redolent of industries gone by. The American Book Company, publisher for many years of the famous McGuffey Readers, has long since been gobbled up by some multinational conglomerate. The leather industry faded with the stockyards, and the metal-working machinery disappeared with LeBlond and Milacron.
Here are some of the brands that used to carry the “Made In Cincinnati” tag. Do you remember any of them?
Butler Pianos The Butler Brothers piano factory on McMicken Street produced pianos under their own name and player pianos under the Ebersole name.
B. Duwel & Brothers With Kentucky’s farms just across the river, Cincinnati was a big tobacco producer and this was one of the biggest firms, turning out smoking and chewing tobaccos under the Red Horse brand.
Dolly Varden Named for a Charles Dickens character, the Dolly Varden Chocolate Company occupied several addresses over the years and introduced the chocolate-covered cherry to America in 1917. The company’s slogan was, “When words fail . . . send Dolly Varden.”
Fiber & Aluminum Artificial Limb Company Cincinnati companies made a lot of artificial body parts at one time – arms, legs, feet, hands, ears, noses, teeth and hair. According to the Post [17 May 1907], only artificial eyes needed to be imported. New York had a lock on glass eyes.
Globe-Wernicke Company The classiest offices in the world featured Globe-Wernicke’s distinctive wood and glass book cases on prominent display. Times and fashions changed and the company went defunct in the modernist 1950s.
Huenefeld Company Gas heaters and oil stoves under the Boss brand claimed that they produced heat without dirt, smoke, fumes or odors.
Icy Hot Manufactured in Cincinnati, the Icy Hot insulated bottle advertised that it would keep contents ice-cold for 72 hours or steaming hot for 24 hours. Founder George P. Altenberg died in 1919 and the company was acquired by the Thermos Corporation in 1925.
Nunner & Ashton Brass beds were the specialty of this company, and a heavy brass bed made at the Pearl Street factory could be had for under $12. At their Main Street outlet, Nunner & Ashton also sold furniture and rugs.
O. Armleder Company The Armleder factory occupied an entire block at the southwest corner of Twelfth and Plum, where Otto Armleder turned out trucks until around 1922.
Ohio Butterine Company At the foot of Walnut Street, this company imported “luscious, fat-filled cocoanuts” to produce Kernel brand nut margarine.
Pattentwood Keg Company Out in Brighton, at the corner of Plum and Charlotte, this company made artificial wood buckets for a very specific product – white lead pigment.
Quality Clothes Sold from a shop on Vine Street, Quality’s “all-wool, snappy, up-to-the-minute” suits were tailored in a shop on Walnut and retailed (in 1914) for $9.99.
R.F. Johnston Paints The top-seller for this Pearl Street company was the Dull-Kote brand, guaranteed not to fade, crack or peel off.
Wy-So Products Company “The tube that saves a thousand stitches,” Wy-So (Why sew? Get it?) was a glue used to mend clothing without sewing.
