Music Business Worldwide | April 25, 2023
[excerpt]
[..] Perhaps the most discussed driver behind vinyl’s rise in music biz circles, though, is the so-called “superfan”.
In a 2020 interview with The Times of London, Rob Crutchley of the UK music trade industry group BPI [167 articles]">BPI said “superfans” were powering a “buy-to-own rather than buy-to-listen” trend.
“A proportion of people are buying vinyl because they’re a superfan, so even if they don’t actually have a turntable they’re still keen to support the artist and have the artifact itself,” he said.
“Sometimes it can be because they’re catalog titles that are being re-pressed in a new edition — maybe a run on a different colored vinyl — other times it might be a new title that has a limited press on a certain format.
”In its 2023 report, Luminate defines superfans as “music listeners who spend above average (median) time AND money on music, actively discover new music, participate in music-related activities on social media, and plan on attending a live music event in the next 12 months.
”Three core behaviors set these ‘superfans’ apart from others, Luminate found:
First, they engage in social signaling (i.e., they want people around them to know about their passion for a particular genre or artist);
Secondly, they view music as an expression of their identity;
Thirdly, they engage in a community centered around music.
All of which suggests that the music industry could make serious money off of superfans’ love for vinyl in the coming years – regardless of whether or not they end up playing the format on a turntable.

#wild..#not sure how i feel about this tbh#it's interesting yes#but also the leadtime on vinyl pressing rn is insane#and while big artists with economic leverage and huge fanbases are making bank#they are also clogging up capacity at the very limited no. of vinyl supplies#making it super difficult for smaller and/or independent artists to get production slots which aren't 6-8-10 months out#making the writing/recording - album release - touring cycle that much longer and in effect less profitable#like i get it.. a 12 inch record is like a little piece of art#but knowing that some many records never get to see a turntable makes me sad#yet another thing that makes succeeding that much more difficult for smaller acts#music business#vinyl#fan culture#music business worldwide#25.04.23#link#m

just to add to the polaroid thing, i got confirmation that people in the UK will have their polaroid shipped with the leather jacket it’s just outside of that that’ll be separate cos the polaroids are not in the same location as the jackets are and have to be shipped separate
^^ i figured that would be the case since uk/normal shop was the only one that says 3 weeks leadtime, thank you for getting confirmation!

I've been quietly keeping an eye on things but man, this response- 100% the only reason this response ever came through + the other npcs are going to be redone is because users kept on bringing it up so it wouldn't be forgotten. Everyone is rightfully focusing on the AI but I also wanted to highlight just...4 months for 80 fully rendered npcs? That's a wild turnaround, at really low rates as it is. Unless this is the only thing that artist was working on (which I doubt based on the rates), that means an npc would need to be fully completed every 1.5 days-> sketch, lines, render and polish. Idk, maybe I'm just a slow artist, but artist friends I have that have done npc art of that nature are given a lot more leadtime (and higher rates for that level of detail!). It's just really hard for me to believe any of this at face value based on the amount of backpedaling and passing the buck onto other people. I just hope that the artists redoing the npcs aren't being rushed to complete all of these immediately, and users can give them the grace to complete the new artwork. (Please only post if anonymous!)

Okay, can we talk about Gwen (Gwyn?) + Owen + Enzo + Jonah and the timing of how that possibly works? (and don’t get me wrong, I love Jonah and big brother TK)
So we know that TK was shot some time shortly before the pandemic and Gwen was in China at the time. So let’s say he’s shot in mid-February. Gwen gets held up with quarantine getting out of China and then again when she gets to the US, which explains why she’s not around at the end of Season 1 when TK is recovering. By the time she is back and through quarantine it’s mid-March and things are bad in New York so she stays in Austin.
Season 2 starts four months after that - so mid-June. Somewhere in there she starts sleeping with Owen. And, at the same time she either travels back to New York and has one last night with Enzo, or Enzo flies to Austin. In the early months of the pandemic when we all basically never left our houses and washed our groceries? And then she goes back to the house with her immuno-compromised ex-husband and son who was still recovering from a gunshot wound? But, sure, okay. Owen was apparently working during Covid while on chemo, so handwave at logic.
Some indeterminate amount of time later she’s 16 weeks pregnant- but there’s been a fair amount of Season 2 plot at that point, so maybe August? Which means she gets pregnant in April? Assuming Jonah is full term, or mostly full term, he can’t possibly be born before late December or early January.
But in TK’s dream sequence she says Jonah’s eating pears? But at most he’s maybe 2 months old (because real life Texas ice storms were February’21)?
In conclusion the timeline of this show makes no sense, and in my next rant I will talk about construction timelines, permitting, and materials leadtimes and why the timeline of Season 1 gives my a headache (no, I won’t, I promise).
#911 lone star#timeline issues#I have officially spent more time thinking about this than the show runners#I really want more Jonah & older brother Tk#Also Enzo - i really want to meet Enzo#Even if he isn’t played by Stanley Tucci as I headcanon

Optimising Manufacturing Operations: Strategies for Lead Time Reduction
Lead time in manufacturing is the entire duration a product takes to move through the production cycle – from sourcing materials to final delivery.

vent post incoming because I am not sure if I'm having a proportional reaction to this or not and throwing it out into the void might help...
So. For context.
My mum's side of the family is very Organised. Particularly my aunt, who is queen of the Itinerary, but this also comes from primarily my grandad (in his 80s but pretty fucking healthy & ex-navy). I love them to bits, they're the Most Sane extended family I have (father's side has all sorts of weird interfamilial politics going on (which I shan't get into but jfc) and my stepdad's family is very nice but also Very Religious.
Bearing this in mind, they have this tradition of these big family holidays around special occasions - these have been the only family holidays I've ever been on barring boating with just my father and grandma when I was a kid - and they are always like. A big affair. Domestic, not abroad, but it's always Rent A Big House in an Area for a Time and then have extremely itinerised activities and have lots of Family Fun (usually whilst me and my mum quietly seethe about it because my aunt has Money and we have historically been very poor, so it's always been more of a burden for us but we just have to suck it up and deal.)
Anyway, this was Tolerable when I was a kid or a teenager and, ya know, in school and living at home.
I am now a 26 year old adult with a Real Job that has a fucked up rota of unsociable hours, that I often don't get until weeks before I'm due to start shifts, and runs year-to-year on the academic year calendar August to August. I also live several hundred miles away from my family.
Last year, there was a Big Family Holiday planned months in advance that I told them from the outset I was unlikely to be able to attend, because the date of it fell on my rotational week from one speciality to another, on a completely different site, and I would either not be able to take leave during that week due to mandatory induction or simply not *want* to due to learning how a new job works. So I didn't go.
My grandad evidently missed me being there (and is feeling his age a bit) so wanted to do another Big Family Holiday this year. Which I was asked about via a message from my mum. Initial planned date was september time 2023 which I said, yo that's way too far ahead for me to even know if I'll have a training post or even know where in the damn country I'll be working - this year I'm taking a year out of training to work ad-hoc shifts and have a break from the Relentlessness of Covid Pandemic Medicine, so like, before August would be good! Because I'm choosing my own hours!
Okay, mum said, are there any dates that are a solid no for you right now?
Ah, I said. Not during the week of Glastonbury Festival. Because we're trying to get tickets this year as it might be my only chance to definitely go and it's my partner's favourite place in the whole world.
This was. All the input I had. In the planning of this family holiday.
I received confirmation a bit later (this was in september 2022) to say that IT'S BEEN BOOKED! Family Holiday is GO!
For EIGHT ENTIRE DAYS in early July, like literally five days after Glasto is done.
Okay, I say, pissed off that I didn't get any input in how fucking long this holiday was, or, crucially, where it was. I got sent a link to a holiday house that I had a skim through but didn't think more about it other than, fuck me, a bit rude not to include me in literally any other part of the planning.
Skip ahead to now - May 2023 - I have secured a training post in a nearby city starting in August, which is excellent news, but still means I have to move house.
So I sit down with my partner as we try and run logistics on getting packing materials and looking at leadtimes on renting, and looking at quotes on storage units and the like.
I get my calendar up and check dates and when things are going to be best planned.
And I realise I have this fucking 8 day chunk of July blacked out for this family holiday that I absolutely have to attend this year because my grandparents are getting old and it might be The Last Big Family Gathering before something happens to their health, right. And I missed the one last year, so I gotta be at this one, otherwise shame on me.
This 8 day chunk of July that's right smack bang in between Glasto and When We Need to Be Moving House.
And then I double check where the fuck in the country this holiday is supposed to be, again.
*Dartmouth*. It's in. Fucking Dartmouth. Which if you are unaware of the British Isles Geography is right in the southwest corner of the fucking country. And is approximately a 5.5 hour no stops drive away from where I live.
Readers, if you've gotten this far I need to tell you something. I don't yet have a driving licence. I'm in the process of doing lessons and have my test booked for the 20th June. Which is the day before we leave for glasto, right. So even if I pass my test first time (I might not, pass-rates are about 50% here), the only chance I will have to practice driving on motorways etc will be on the 4.5 hour drive to glasto, and then possibly on the way back.
Partner can and does drive, right, but probably can't come to Big Family Holiday because he'll either still be in work that week OR will be sorting the moving house stuff out in my absence.
So if I pass my driving test, I might have to do a 5.5hour solo drive cross country completely alone on big fucking motorways less than two weeks after passing my test. Not fucking ideal.
Alternatively, I could take the train. which costs (with a railcard) nearly £120 for a return and takes approximately EIGHT HOURS each way.
Other options would be to travel even earlier (still also via train, as it's also a 5 hour drive to where they live) to my parents and accompany them on the 4.5 hour drive from where they live to Holiday Destination, because my family decided to choose a place to go on holiday that is pretty much an equal distance from both of our locations but NOT IN A HELPFUL WAY. We'll still all have to travel the same fucking amount to the far corner of the damn cross country triangle between us.
Third option is to beg my friend who lives near glastonbury to let me stay with her or in her parent's house for the inbetween five days and then travel the 2 hours to Holiday Destination from there, but this isn't ideal because 1) I'd need to pack clothes for three weeks, 2) we only have one vehicle so how would partner get home, and 3) due to moving house I do actually need to be back at home in that inbetween time.
Anyway. I'm pissed off. Because I'm an adult with a job and none of the planning for this family holiday other than *avoid this one specific week* was done with any kind of consideration toward me. It feels like I'm still being treated as a child that can just Drop Everything and Attend an event I'm not even particularly thrilled to be going on (for eight entire fucking days) and if I don't or can't go I'm in the wrong.
/scream

Pvs14
Hey guys, so this weeks post is very exciting to me. It has been a long time coming. That being said, I finally ordered my PVS 14 night vision monocular from brownells.
So I figure in this post I will go through what you can expect if you order one of these and also go through what all it comes with and my first impressions. Next weeks post will be my one week of only night vision and I will explain everything that I either found out or realized what I thought. I was wrong after using it every single night since getting it.
So originally I placed my order and on the Brownells website, this is a ship from manufacture item. So with that being said, it typically takes longer to receive it I contacted customer service and asked what the leadtime was and I was told by someone that it will be 4 to 8 weeks which I kind of expected , so I wasn’t surprised at all. What had me surprised was when I got a text from FedEx saying that a package from the manufacture was going to be delivered three days later. I’m not sure if that was just a fluke thing or if this is what you can expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised to receive it very quickly.
Overall, the contents of the package are pretty standard. Across-the-board you get a pretty nice bag that houses everything you get your full manual, your spec sheet a couple of accessory’s, and then the night vision monocular itself originally when I ordered this I was a little concerned at if it was going to be a quality tube or not considering it is a site mark product And I couldn’t find a whole lot about them online. But again I was very pleasantly surprised when I got eyes on the spec sheet and realize it was actually a extremely nice tube and it definitely shows when using it. Overall, it’s all very standard nothing weird with the housing or controls comes with the J arm mount, so I was able to use my rhino mount that I have on my ops core helmet.
So like I originally said, I was very surprised at how good the spec sheet was with this tube and I have really been enjoying using it. Like I said earlier, I have used it every night since getting it. That way I can do a very authentic video, explaining everything that I experienced with it after the first week. Night vision is definitely a game changer, and in my opinion, there is absolutely no comparison between this and a digital night vision device. I do still plan on grabbing another mount to do a budget night vision versus analog night, vision comparison using my Sionyx aurora as a night vision device like a lot of people show that they do online. But before even doing that, I can tell you it’s going to be a night and day difference from what I’ve already seen with both of them.
Like I said, in the beginning this post is telling how my experience went and showing what all you can expect when ordering one of these. Check out the links down below. I have a lot of cool video ideas and other content that I’m going to be doing with this. And as always check out Brownells using the link down below. They are huge supporters of everything I do, and without them things like this would not be possible for me to do.
Thanks for reading!
