im still sort of new to this fandom so im still learning the ropes of whats ok and what isnt--why is layclive a bad ship? i thought clive was an adult (like 23 or so?) :0 im not disagreeing with you! i just want to make sure to avoid it if its bad or if i have clive's age wrong!! if u dislike it for personal reasons i totally get that, i have ships like that too that make me uncomfortable but not for reasons that everyone can relate to. if u dont wanna answer thats also ok! i love your work!!

hey, it’s no problem! entering a new fandom and working everything out can certainly be difficult, and i’m glad to help you out.

the main issue that arises with l.ayclive is the age gap. whilst indeed they are both adults, there’s around a 14-year age gap that separates them, which is made a problem by clive’s youth (he’s barely an adult, and he appears much younger than 23) and the professor acting as a sort of mentor or father figure towards him. this creates an innate power imbalance, which is never a good thing.

an additional problem is present with regards to clive being referred to early on in some parts of the fandom as “legal luke”, which has some very unpleasant implications. whilst that’s much less common now, part of that sense of uncomfortableness that clive is pretending to be an older version of luke (and that, in the case of l.ayclive, layton is pursuing a romantic and/or sexual relationship with him) is still very much there.
