filipino folk song faves ni nablah (not ranked)
Dandansoy - the lyricism, the oyayi quality, the yearning for another and for a better world. Please watch the CCP (C/P/P? 🧐 jk) short film on youtube
Cariñosa - mostly in love with how there are so many versions with different lyrics even different lyrics within the same rendition due to translations (see Mabuhay Singers' english version). thats so luzon culture i.e. liars (i am taga-luzon)
Katakataka - klak klak klak very cute lyrics very cute music first love? last love? second chance? kyut!!! (shoutout to @theresa-of-liechtenstein 's cabin pressure fanart with katakataka!!)
Chitchiritchit - magical realism tradition lives on in how they were just rhyming shit here. colonial comedy and horror :>
Lawiswis kawayan - reminiscent of Elemental by Marjorie Evasco. the imagery!! entry point for more mature folk songs
Paruparong bukid - yes very filipino catholic feminism (appreciative) worship the woman! also i performed this as a butterfly in grade 3. gender.
Magtanim ay 'Di biro - TAMA!!! korek!! labor and agricultural rights ❗️
Bahay kubo - versatile queen. any pinoy millenial/ gen z will remember this in nutrition month AND buwan ng wika
Ako ay may lobo - radicalized me as a child
Tong tong tong tong - alimangooo Not kosher but helps exercise your speech (friends w too many SLPs) funny kung lasing 🍾🍾🍾
Ili ili, tulog anay - similar to Dandansoy in fame imo, one of the most beautiful lullabies. anyone saying she is creepy does not understand!!! that's my ate waiting for mama kung nagbrownout!

Folk Literature
We got printouts back in my senior high school days from the "Philippine Literature Resource Book". So, I'll be dropping the tidbits here:
Types of Philippine Folk Literature
Folk Speech
Folk Songs
Folk Narratives
FOLK SPEECH - aka. bugtong (in Tagalog) and Tigmu (in Cebuano). They can be talinghaga (making use of metaphor to describe intended objects), ambahan (used to express everyday experience composing of 7 syllables in a line), or tanaga (7 syllable quatrain and a definite answer) (Santiago, 2011).
FOLK SONGS - short verses revealing ancient Filipino cultures that usually center around solation, happiness, uncertainty, and love. The earliest songs appeared during the pre-Spanish era (Kahayon & Zuleta, 2000).
Matud Nila (Lacia, et al, 2003)
Usahay (Region VII: Central Visayas)
Atin Cu PungSingsing (Region III: Central Luzon; Capampangan Folk Song)
These are other folk songs that were commonly sung in our childhood days.
Si Pilemon
Pamulinawen
ManangBiday
Dadansoy
Sarong Banggi
Bahay Kubo
Magtanim ay Di Biro
Lawiswis Kawayan
Chit-chirit-chit
Leron, Leron, Sinta
FOLK NARRATIVES - are classified into three: Myth (example: Ifugao Creation; Why the B'laans Are Ignorant), Legend (The Durian Legend; Mindanao: The Origin of Its Name; The Origin of the World), and Folk Epic.
Ulaging (A Bukidnon Epic) - The term Ulaging originated from the root word legena which means voice. An epic that is intended to be sung (Saway-Llesis, 2003) and performed without the accompaniment of any musical instrument (Brandeis, 2008). The chanting of the epic is sacred which is why it cannot be done without a ritual called pamada (Saway-Llesis, 2003). This epic is composed of many episodes sung during nighttime lasting for several hours or even several nights.
Darangan (A Maranao Epic) - is one of the Philippines' longest epic telling of the history and culture of its people. It was proclaimed a "masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity" by UNESCO (Philippine Star, Dec 13, 2005).
The Guman of Dumalinao
The Maiden of Buhong Sky
The Epic of Labao Donggon

"We study literature so that we can better appreciate our literature heritage. Through a study of our literature, we can trace the rich heritage of ideas handed down to us from our forefathers. Then we can understand ourselves better and take pride in being a filipino." - Kahayon and Lulueta (2000)

Halumigmig
Tumblr media
Sa espasyo ng kalangitan,
Sa pagitan ng sinimulan;
Sa distansya ng kalawakan;
Paano mo nga ba malalaman ang kinabukasan?
Kung ang ngayon ay walang kasiguruhan.
Sa pagaspas ng amihan,
Sa kasukalan ng kagubatan;
Paano ba matatagpuan ang kasiyahan?
Kung hindi matunton ang wastong daan.
Sa wisik ng mga alapaap,
Sa alaala ng hinagap;
Paano harapin ang takot ng nakaraan?
Kung paalala ng paligid ay ang kakulangan.
Sa hampas ng mga alon,
Sa likod ng mga hinahon;
Paano ipakita ang tunay na ako?
Kung ang "siya" ay hindi kanino.
Sa lawiswis ng mga kawayan,
Sa pagpatak ng ulan;
Paano marinig ang nakabibinging katahimikan?
Kung patuloy na walang imik ang kasalukuyan.

Hidden Sanctuary Away from Manila
Tumblr media
There are times that you would feel all stress out about all the things that surrounds you. It may be about work, family, peers, financially or generally, everything stresses you out. You would just like to take a break from it all and have a peace of mind. Probably would also like to have somewhere to go to be able to relax and unwind.
Once in a while in your life, you would need to pause from your daily routine and do something new or go somewhere. When finding a different place to go to, sometimes you would find an unexpected place you would be able to call a sanctuary. A place where you would be able to relax, feel safe, and appreciate the life you have. As defined, a sanctuary is a place of haven or safety.
Recently, I have found a hidden sanctuary just outside the busy streets of Metro Manila. This place is called Lawiswis Kawayan Garden Resorts and Spa in Bulacan. It is a small area that would bring you some relaxation and peace of mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon entering the lobby, you would see mats on the floor where you can sit down and relax or even play sungka. They have a flexible accommodation time which I really do like. You can stay either from 10:00am - 8:00am, 2:00pm - 12:00nn, or 6:00pm - 4:00pm, or just have the day tour instead. It is good for those who would be coming from a far place or have a prior activity in the morning.
Tumblr media
The building on the right is where their lobby area is and above is a function hall. The duyan attached in the tree is one of my favorite spots since it is under the shade of a tree, and relaxing music and songs are being played all throughout the day and night in the area.
Tumblr media
The Pavilion is located in front of the reception. It is the main venue for the dining area. In Lawiswis Kawayan, you can bring and grill your own food but you would need to clean the area you used and throw the trash. Which I think is good to have proper discipline of the guests and maintain the cleanliness of the resort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Across the lobby area is an open field that has tables and chairs outside. It also has beds where you can hang-out and unwind. You can also opt to dine here instead of their Pavilion. For us, we decided to have our meals outside to feel the ambiance the place has.
Tumblr media
Near the Pavilion is the open shower area before using the pool. I like how the aesthetic of using tree trunks as showers and has pebble stones below it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Behind the open showers is the pool area. The area has a small pool for children and a larger one for the adults. The adult pool has a depth of 4 feet to 6 feet. Beside the pool area is a small pavilion where day tour guests can use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beside the open field is the Massage and Spa area. I have tried their massage, and it was definitely a relaxing one. However, I really do hope they’ll give some time for guests to relax after the massage since in my experience, once it was done; they woke me up instantly and made me dress up and go. Special rates for the massage are available if you avail their overnight rates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Far opposite of the pool, are the rooms for overnight guests. In front of the rooms is a small playground. It has swings, small slides, playhouse, and a monkey bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our room was located in the first floor just in front of the swings and mini play ground. The room we have is named Payapa and it was good for 4. In terms of the room, it is quite small for 4 persons. The beds were just put together for 4 people to fit in. The restroom was also quite small. Doors were made of glass and curtains were the ones for covering the glass and to have some privacy.
When it comes to food, they don’t have a regular menu for their daily food. You would need to ask the reception for the availability of meals. Choices were limited and there were no available restaurants nearby in this area. However, food is delicious and comes with sets like 1 main course, drinks, and desserts.
Tumblr media
That night, we had plated Korean barbecue that came with drinks and buko pandan. I wasn’t able to take a picture of it since I forgot my phone inside the room. Breakfast for the next day was Fried tilapia, coffee, and watermelon. The fried tilampia was one of the best I have eaten! It was really delicious and crispy – a must try if you’ll be able to visit this place.
Tumblr media
The fried chicken were our lunch for the next day, it came with soup, ice tea, and desserts. I really do hope they would have more options for their food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, Lawiswis Kawayan is an excellent place to have rest-filled staycation after being in the busy steets of Manila. The staffs were very nice and accommodating. They were attentive to our needs and inquiries during our stay. It is a good place that is near Manila to have a short relaxation.
It is indeed a hidden sanctuary away from Manila. How about you? Where is your hidden sanctuary? Let me know if you want to know more about places like this.
Until the next entry, conquering the within with happy thoughts! ✴️

Jed + Ayn - SixTenSeventeen
Jed + Ayn – SixTenSeventeen

A save-the-date short film about love and coffee.
I was thinking of having a bit of a story on this video. Not the usual montage of suggestive romantic footage or the cutie couple shots we commonly see on “save-the-date” videos or any “prenuptial” sessions. Yes it’s still a cliche but still an interesting concept nonetheless. (more…)

"Lawiswis Kawayan"
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
Said the young man come or appoint
Sabi ng binata halina o hirang
Let's go on a bamboo walk
Magpasyal tayo sa Lawiswis kawayan
Nest of love and happiness
Pugad ng pag-ibig at kaligayahan
Hearts are forced to love one another
Ang mga puso ay pilit magmahalan
The girl also loves to dance
Ang dalaga naman ay ibig pang umayaw
I'll tell you more
Sasabihin pa kay inay nang malaman
The young man spoke with the language
Binata'y nagtampo at ang wika
You are such that you think you are honest and
Ikaw pala'y ganyan akala mo'y tapat at
I'm loved.
Ako'y minamahal.
The girl suddenly wept
Ang dalaga naman ay biglang umiyak
Tears trickled down to the chest dripping
Luha ay tumulo sa dibdib pumatak
The young man felt sorry for kneeling immediately
Binata'y naawa lumuhod kaagad
Supplicate and apologize.
Nagmakaamo at humingi ng patawad.

Lawiswis Kawayan Lyrics
An panyo an panyo nga may sigarilyo, Ginpiksi ni Inday kay may sentimyento An nasisinahan an nabi- an nabibidu-an Tungod la han hadtona nga waray katuman. An ini nga hugpo lawiswis kawayan Diin an higugma nga may rayan-dayan Magburugto gayud mga gin-angayan…

Lawiswis Kawayan
an attempt to translate the poem to Cebuano as homework for Filipino Class circa 2012
Lawiswis Kawayan
Pulong sa batan-on, dali na, hinigugma
Manglakaw kita sa lawiswis kawayan
Pugaran sa gugma ug kalipay
Mga kasingkasing pugos mag-hinigugmaay
 Ang dalaga buot pang modumili
Isulti pa kang Nanay nga masayran kini
Ang ulitawo nangluod ug ang sulti
“Ikaw man diay kay ingon ana,
Naluoy ang batan-on ug dayon miluhod
Nagpakaluoy, nangayo ug pasaylo.
it’s been a long time. and it sounds a bit weird. LOL
