Apparently I never split the guys in this post so, here they are.

OK on my ‘puter now to provide a reply to this, because this is honestly super fascinating to me--

So, I do personally think that neither side is inherently violent by instinct, the Preserves aside (who I will touch on later, bc they are a fascinating case). However, we have seen both the angels and demons being cruel to others, as mentioned before!! Strap in, because this got real long--

There is a solid argument that the demons have a tendency towards higher levels of cruelty - we see Roc not considering what he does to Lobco to be physical assault[1], Hanten regularly dismembers Met or tears her in half, etc.

However, if we are to use the grey world as an example here, Yosafire shows no sadistic tendencies at all! Neither does Dialo - despite her apparently being ‘scary’ whilst cooking, she never actually shows any outward signs of sadism (you can’t even fight as her). We also have examples from WATGBS that I forgot about with my ask: The merc trio!!

Audachi, who is in open rebellion against his father but never seems to be out and out cruel towards us - he’s just doing his job.

Laurentia, who is out and out sadistic - She enjoys giving her younger sister nightmares, and explicitly enjoys killing.

Vermillion, who is perhaps the most fascinating case here: She explicitly doesn’t want to attack Wadanohara or hurt her, but values her job above all else. She also worries about Wadanohara during the Sea of Death invasion - providing an excellent example of a non-TGG demon who isn’t sadistic!!

Now, 2 out of these 3 are non-sadistic: Audachi, a demon who rejected his father and the world he comes from, and Ver Million, who’s devil rejected her god and took all the angels with her! (A strange reflection of the garden, perhaps?) Audachi’s rejection of his father and his willingness to choose his own path has important narrative themes for WATGBS and Ivlis, but for this has a fascinating thing: His refusal to participate in his father’s world may also be linked with his lack of sadism!!

With Ver Million, her parents are a sore subject for her, stating that they’re “ancient”[2] - possibly in reference to her dating an angel. This would line up with her parents being from before the angels turned against Liliya, and being raised in the hell without the angels - meaning that they may consider this kind of relationship with an angel immoral? However, Ver clearly doesn’t share those views (if they are there), and lacks the sadism we often see from demons! All potentially because she wasn’t raised in an environment that encourages that kind of sadism, because there was no grand conflict or war.

Now, I want to briefly address the angels: We have a huge lack of information on Taffy unfortunately, but we do know some fascinating things regarding him: He decapitated Anten and carried his head around at least for a while, and regularly gets into fights with Roc (which he loses). He’s not cruel towards Olive or the other angels, and he is expicitly good with children[3], so why the act of cruelty with chopping off Anten’s head? And, why the wavy sword, something known to give hard to heal cuts? The answer to these, I would argue, is the same answer as to why Roc doesn’t consider what he does to Lobco violence, why Met is so comfortable with Hanten being so cruel towards her:

It’s normalised for them. This cruelty is normalised. The sadism of it is normalised. NNK and KNK are at war, so of course Taffy chops off Anten’s head, of course Roc tortures Taffy, of course Taffy’s feathers are potentially used as Futon stuffing[4]. Demons are meant to be cruel, so it’s fine if Hanten tears Met in half - it’s no different to her mother and father torturing Sullivan all the time. It’s a cultural thing ingrained into them, from how they have been raised. When you’re at war all the time, surrounded by this cruelty, you end up cruel yourself!

It is also important to put a note here about Wodahs: He is expicitly called out for being sadistic, in his enjoyment of seeing his brother’s guilty face over the eye patch, and his enjoyment of passive aggressively bullying his brother[5]!

Of course, here we collide with an issue: Demons are often cruel to one another, whilst Angels by and large are not! The root cause of this however, I think, is a simple difference in form and function: Demons are ruled over by their devil, whilst angels serve their god. Fumus assaults and tortures his angels, who are all devoted to him - meaning that they likely don’t wish to cause issue with what is his (and trauma bonding stuff). We see this with Elux’s world as well - the angels seem to all be on good terms with one another, from what little we know, yet Lowrie used to torment Ushio, and Ushio is why Lowrie doesn’t like cows. We don’t see much of Siralos’ world, but the demons in Ivlis’ world don’t seem hostile to one another - perhaps relating to how Ivlis has a more direct presence in his ruling over them?

Lowrie especially is a fascinating case, in this regard. We know from TGG that he used to live in Reficul’s world, and had ‘a scary face’, and was far more cruel than he is now. However, despite this, he is kind to the people of the garden, and caring towards the students - indeed, it’s a surprise to many players that Lowrie even has a darker side! This is, I would argue, another strong example in favour of nurture - once Lowrie is taken out of a situation where that violence and cruelty is normalised, he is no longer violent or cruel towards them! At least, until Reficul turns up, and encourages him to show his ‘true nature’ - though it’s unclear if this truly is his true nature, or simply a regression back to who he once was.

Now, I did promise to touch upon the Preserves, which is a delightful thorn in the side of this whole theory. After all, all of the Preserves are demonstrably violent by their very nature - They’re cannibalistic gluttony demons, and as you pointed out, Rawberry flies into a rage when she finds out what happened to her sister! However, here I do have an interesting counterpoint to make as well: I would argue that whilst they are by their nature violent - just as a lion will maul a buffalo in order to eat it - they are not by their nature sadistic or cruel. Upon seeing what became of her sister, Rawberry was no doubt angry and ruled by emotions, but is that cruelty? Is that sadism, to feel rage at the harm of ones you love? Raspbel, her gluttony and losses of control aside, is a remarkably kind and sweet older sister - just one who happens to sleep a lot - perhaps to avoid outbursts? It is very possible that they are violent by their nature, but not sadistic or cruel - rather than deriving joy from the harm and torture of others, they instead do it out of the joy of eating - out of gluttony. Regarding the issue of what Raspbel is eating to sate that gluttony, we actually know!! There's a reason their house is completely filled with jam, after all! And we know that Rawberry can eat non-meat food - she eats the apple pie.

Now, of course, there is the issue of Rawberry so often chasing Macarona around with worms and other insects - however, I would argue that this is simply them behaving as most friends do. No more sadistic than Froze teasing Yosafire about her weight, or the ‘disgusting amount of apples’ she collects. Perhaps a hint of cruelty, but not one that is a deviation from the norm. She’s hardly trying to tear Macarona in half or such.

There is a brief thing with Sin to touch upon, because she is honestly utterly fascinating. I have my own theories about her, as any who have talked to me for more than 5 minutes know, but working just off of what we have in canon: She is a doting and loving wife, who seems rather innocent about a lot of things, and speaks in a manner similar to "a warlord's wife" (in terms of the word choices and tone she uses in the original Japanese). She gets along well with Lzet, and has never shown any outward cruelty towards others. Of course, this might all be a facade (please god let it be a facade), but for now, we have no evidence of that (sadly).

Now, there is one final point I want to raise, based on something that you brought up! "Sea creatures are peaceful by their nature". Which is a fascinating statement that further supports the idea of it being nurture, rather than nature, that causes these things! After all, Idate aside (because he's an Orca), we see Cherryblod being known to have been cruel in the past - which can't just be because of demon blood, because Lobco lacks that same cruelty! We also know for a fact that Sal is outright explicitly sadistic, and there is the whole Mikotsuhime issue. Of course, both Sal and Mikotsuhime share a same root cause: Trauma. Sal lost his mother at a young age[6], and has been suffering from the trauma of that, and Mikotsuhime had the whole Sea King BS to suffer through. I do personally believe that it is part of the tragedy of WATGBS - Things could have gone differently, things could have been better, if the Sea King hadn't been so much of what he was, if Sal hadn't gone to the Sea of Death, etc. (I need to write a thing some time about WATGBS and it's themes of trauma and parents, because holy shit).

I do apologise, because this got incredibly long, but I have a lot of thoughts on this topic, and you provided a really interesting response!!

I just realized that how many sadists has Okegom - Fumus, Moge-ko, Satanick, Reficul , Poemi, Roc, Hanten and much more others, though i not complain i like them and just wanted to ask what do you think?

i don't think much of it, but like... most of them are demons, a species usually depicted as violent/evil/sadistic in whatever media/books/myths by default, so i reckon it makes sense too. ┐(￣ヘ￣)┌

'gray world' demons are kind of an exception to this, but even then, they're still pretty violent in the game (rawberry & raspbel especially).

Hi... sorry if I'm bothering you, but could you do a fanfic where Envi beats up Licorice (he loses his left arm like in that comic), and he is very badly injured but Adauchi (he is in the Pitch Black World) helps him, and they don't know they're half-brothers yet? Sorry if this sounds too complex or weird.

Adauchi didn’t know why he was even in this stupid world, but he guess it worked out. One of Satanick’s little lackeys was bullying some little kid and he wasn’t about to let that go unchecked. “HEY! GET AWAY FROM THAT KID!” Sprinting off away from his coworkers and friends, he summoned his lance and tossed it at the sheep. Envi dodged, letting out a small gasp of surprise. Once he saw Adauchi stand in front of Licorice, he let out a small snort.

“How about you get out of my way so I can finish him off? He’s already lost an arm.” To prove his point, he held up Licorice’s arm. Laurentia had caught up with Adauchi rather quickly and picked up Licorice, doing her best to stop the bleeding. This only made Adauchi angrier.

“How about I turn you into a kebab?” Envi just rolled his eyes, tossing the arm to the side as he turned around.

“Fine, I’m leaving.” He walked off, irritated that he was stopped once again from killing the brat. Adauchi quickly turned around, frowning. The kid looked…weirdly familiar.

“You look like Satanick.” Once he was able to put two and two together, it only made him more confused. “Why the hell would Envi try to kill Satanick’s own kid?” He looked to Laurentia, as Licorice had passed out.

“I don’t know. I don’t want to take him back to that place…he’d be an easy target for that…idiot.” She huffed, gently rubbing Licorice’s back. Nodding, Adauchi waved over Ver Million.

“We’re taking the kid back with us, to make sure he’s safe.” Ver Million made a small face.

“We aren’t gonna get paid for this are we?”

“Probably not…but come on.” Adauchi lead the two, heading back to the place they had been staying.

Once Licorice woke up, he was a bit frightened at first. That’s when he spotted Adauchi. “You.”

“Yeah? Im the guy that saved your ass kid.”

“I’d rather have died.” Ver blinked, glancing between the two. Adauchi was just as stunned as Ver.

“What the hell? Do you know me or something?” Licorice nodded, standing with only a slight wince. That’s when there was a small ‘poof’ and Licorice was in his adult form. There was a full minute of silence before Adauchi put everything together.

“Are you…”

“You’re my half brother. And I can’t forgive someone that would abandon Mom.” Turning to the others, he bowed politely. “Thank you, both of you for helping me in my time of need.” As he walked out, there was a bit of silence before Adauchi broke it himself.

“What the fuck just happened.”

Thought you may appreciate that I am so so tempted to write a fic where Vendetto finds Rieta's lamp and him, Laurentia, and Ver Million have to try and help her. The other two ask who she is and she decides to be embarrassing and half of it really just goes "I'm his mother" "SHE IS NOT" and the other two laugh their asses of. I am so excited to get around to writing this I have so many ideas and half of them involve bringing the WatGBS and TGG characters into the mess too
