Princess Aurora longs to escape the castle and the marriage that has been arranged for her.
But on the night before her wedding, at a dog fight where captured werewolves are made to fight for sport, she spares the life of a young wolf. It puts her on the radar of the powerful alpha who was going to kill him. And it changes everything.

And will Aurora ever get home?

What did I think of the book?
The Wolf King: A Fantasy Romance by Lauren Palphreyman My rating: ⭐⭐ 2 of 5 stars
*Disclaimer: Spoilers* I have very mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, the concept and the Celtic werewolves were really interesting. But on the other hand, this book had some major issues that negatively affected the reading experience of the story for me. The pacing is all over the place, and the writing is less-to-be-desired. Descriptions and imagery were repetitive to the point of being almost mind numbing, and I quickly dreaded getting through 400+ pages of this. It ruined the reading experience of many decent parts of the book that were actually well done. The "romance" is okay despite being extremely rushed and awkward to me. Personally, the relationship between Blake and Aurora felt much more natural and legit than with Callum. I guess this is just one of those books that is focused on the hot rods and steam, and little else, but with the cover design and premise I was expecting more. Thankfully, to me, the last 10-ish chapters were really worth pushing through the book for, it had me on the edge of my seat wondering how things were going to play out, and was satisfying enough to leave me wanting more. I really wish Aurora's character had more focus on coming into her own as a person, and gaining a sense of self and freedom from the way she was raised and treated in her own Kingdom. It would have made for such beautiful character development, and a deeper connection between her and the werewolves, and their wilder, untamed ways of life, etc. While we see some of this here and there in the story, (and oh my gosh is it beautiful and gripping when those scenes do happen), it unfortunately gets washed out constantly by other more prominent details that mainly includes the broken record of how Callum affects her as the "hottie alpha" every other page of the book… *inwardly groans*. There is a cliff hanger… I'm kind of mad about it, but to be honest, yes, I will more than likely read the second book that is promised, though I am dreading the writing. I can only hope book two will be more polished than book one. Favorite character/s: Hands down, it has to be Blake. To me, this character was the most "fleshed out" character in the book, and the author's potential as a writer really shone through this character. It was a breath of fresh air to read his scenes. He is so extremely interesting, and the major reason I didn't end up dnf-ing this book half way through. What drew me to this book? I was in desperate need of a new werewolf book. The cover and title snatched my attention over other books purely because it wasn't copy-paste like a lot of fantasy books are seeming to be these days. (E.g. Kingdom of X and X, Court of X and X, The King/Queen of X and X. Ugh, enough already!) Stars: This book has so much potential. With more polishing and refinement of the writing, it really could've hit a 4/5 stars easily for me. But the issues it has were like a thorn in my side the whole way through, so this sits about a 2.5 out of 5 stars. View all my reviews

These Books are OK
⟿ 2024
Tumblr media
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: This is right on the cusp of being an absolutely not for me.
The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman
Penpal by Dathan Auerbach
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova: I prob liked this book more than most of the books on this list, but I just didn't love it like I was thinking I would. The second half of the book didn't make a lot of sense. I would have appreciated some type of explanation as to why in two years M had become an 18-year-old man? It also wasn't as interesting as the first half, and a lot of things explored in the characters during the first half had no in-depth conclusion in the second. The time jump was jarring, and it took a lot away from the narrative, for me.
The Stone Wolf's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells
The Lone Wolf's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: this is the 3rd book in the series. for me, neither book 2 or 3 has been nearly as good as book 1. i think i'm going to hold off on the 4th book.
The Heir Apparent's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: the first book was awesome. i was a bit disappointed, but this book is fine. i missed how passionate and jealous Killian was in comparison to the white bread mmc, Cadoc, in this book.
Love Potion for the Alpha by Alice Coldbreath: if this book had taken its self seriously, i would have ended up hating it, but it didn't. it's comedic and self-aware.
11/22/63 by Stephen King
Bride by Ali Hazelwood: I feel like this book tried to justify it's existence by pushing a lot of unnecessary plot. I wished it had leaned harder on being fun.
The Fallen Series by Gabrielle Sands: Mindless, fun reading.
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn: Gillian Flynn uses her writing talent for evil.
Heavy is the Crown by Lindsey Jai: This was a fun debut fantasy novel.
A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck: I liked the idea but I feel like it could have been so much more than it was.
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata: Very wtf did I just read. A lot of shock value.
Heathens by Alta Hensley: Mindless, fun reading.

He's mythologically hot, a little bit wicked, and almost 100% immortal. And he'll hit you right in the heart . . . "Miss Black, we have a big problem.” Lila Black doesn't believe in matchmaking, let alone soul mates. So then why is she constantly being hassled by the Cupids Matchmaking Service? But this gilded, cherub-bedecked dating agency isn't exactly what it seems . . . and it’s about to turn Lila's entire world upside down. It turns out that Cupids Matchmaking is the real deal. As in, it's run by actual cupids—who don't look at all like they do in the paintings—and they have a serious problem with Lila's “match.” Because this guy shouldn't be in the system. He shouldn't have a match. And while he's irresistibly hot, he's also incredibly dangerous. Because Lila's true love match is Cupid. The original bad boy of love. And he wants her. Now Lila's once-normal teenaged world has exploded into a mythological nightmare overrun by crime-lord sirens, wrathful cupid hit men, magic arrows that cause no end of trouble, and a mischievous, not-so-angelic love god she can't seem to stop herself from falling for . . .

“Cupid’s Match” (Cupid’s Match # 1) by Lauren Palphreyman

REVIEW
The Cupid’s Match Series (Cupid’s Match, Valentine’s Day, and Psyche’s Heart) by Lauren Palphreyman
Book Summary: “Lila Black doesn't believe in matchmaking, let alone soul mates. Now Lila's once-normal teenaged world has exploded into a mythological nightmare overrun by crime-lord sirens, wrathful cupid hit men, magic arrows that cause no end of trouble, and a mischievous, not-so-angelic love god she can't seem to stop herself from falling for . . .“
My Review
When Lila keeps receiving emails and letters from the Cupid's Match Making Service that she's been matched, she goes to straighten out the misunderstanding. She already has a boyfriend and never signed up to begin with. But once she arrives and speaks to Cal, not only does she find out that cupids are real, but Cupid himself is her match! And everything is just no stop adventure and excitement from there.
I saw this book sitting on the shelf in Barnes and Noble and felt compelled to sit in the aisle and read the first chapter. Loved it so much that it came home with me. Loved the Roman mythology twist of this series!
I devoured this whole series so fast because I just fell in love with all the characters. Especially Lila and Cupid. I think I really liked Cupid from the get go. James was so boring and Cupid was really exciting with a personality for days! Him and Lila clash in a sparky fun way that I loved reading as it develops into real love.
I’m reviewing this whole series here when I say that is always bugged me whenever Lila wouldn’t confide in Cupid things. Especially when Cal and Cupid’s brother, Valentine, comes to town in book 2. Valentine wants Lila, but it never really felt like it was actually for Lila herself but for what Cupid has.
Don’t get me wrong, Valentine can be very charming too. But he throws tons of wrenches into things.
I also really liked Cal in the series. I always thought he might have a thing for Lila too, but is too respectful of what her and Cupid have.
Cupid and Cal are an awesome team! While they are originally at odds, I loved how they come together as this amazing force who is always behind Lila in every fight.
Lila also has this amazing best friend, Charlie, who gets turned into a cupid. It’s sad that Charlie can’t live a normal life anymore, but neither can Lila really. They seem to grow even closer than before through all the trials and battles. Run ins with dangerous foes one minute, but able to confide their secrets to each other the next.
I absolutely loved this series!! Great world building, attention to details with the myths being pulled into the story as inspiration, and a really wonderful cast of characters that I really loved and cared about. This series felt very similiar to Shadowhunters.
I hope there are more books because I want more!

Cupid’s Match Review
I was given the opportunity to read this novel by Lauren Palphreyman, early in exchange for an honest review.
Cupid’s match is a fresh and original take on the supernatural teen romance genre. I loved it, I powered through the whole novel in a matter of hours, unable to put it down without thinking about it. There were lots of unexpected twist and turns throughput the novel that stopped me from putting it down. I was able to easily sympathize with the characters and found myself holding my breath as I cheered on Lila and Cupid every time they were together.
There are many times throughout the novel that made my heart swell and many that had me chuckling to myself as I read along.
The novel included mythological and historical characters to help move the story along and it was executed seamlessly and enriched the overall storytelling experience.
My only criticism of the story is that I would have liked to see more of Lila and James relationship in the beginning to be able to feel the full impact that Cupid had on her. In the end though it does not change the quality of the novel.
Other than that one note, I have nothing remotely negative to say about it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the open ended ending that left me wanting more. I will be buying a copy after release to support the author and I am excited for any sequels that maybe released it the future.
Keep an eye out on October 1st, 2019 for this lovely novel hitting the shelves.
Happy reading,
Aiden <3
