I saw Immaculate

Yes the title is confusing the immaculate conception with the virgin birth but it's not like the characters in this movie making the comparison have any sanity or knowledge of theology

at one point they say the baby will be their salvation which, Jesus was our salvation dudes, that was in fact the entire point

only thing I'd seen Sydney Sweeney in before this was Madame Web, so it's good to know she can actually act

I'm reminded of Roger Ebert's review of Stigmata: "It is also not possible, according to leading church authorities, to catch the stigmata from a rosary. It is not a germ or a virus. It comes from within. If it didn't, you could cut up Padre Pio's bath towels and start your own blood drive."

I know it sounds like I'm shitting on this movie but I'm not, it makes complete sense that the characters are saying/doing heretical things because their entire grasp of religion is heretical, I had fun, Sydney Sweeney was really good

Poolverine but they dress up as each other for Halloween. I'm not just talking about swapping costumes—they go all in. They get those facial prosthetics to get each other's skin textures right, Wade goes in with makeup for detailing, and Wade wears a bodysuit while Logan wears slight platform shoes and shapewear to roughly match their builds.

They put on each other's suits and make sure the proportions are as accurate as possible. Wade even goes as far as to call in a few favors to get voice-changing abilities.

Then, Halloween, they pretend to be each other. They try to match each other's personalities and mannerisms and see if anyone can notice.

At first, you'd think it'd be obvious that they switched. But here's the thing: they know each other. Wade knows how Logan moves and talks and acts and fights. Logan knows how to predict Wade's moods and reactions and decisions. They're incredibly self-aware and in sync.

They both show up to their friend's Halloween party dressed as each other. The crowd is incredibly large because everyone invited all the people that they know, which includes Vanessa's new friends and the majority of the X-mansion.

The only person who knew off the bat was Laura. There was no hiding it from her with her sense of smell, but they didn't intend to. She was in on the joke and came to watch the shitshow in action.

When asked about their costume, "Wade" says that Deadpool is what all the kids want to dress up as for Halloween, and he was just following the trend! Besides, no need to waste money buying a costume when he has the best one right in his closet. He's the scariest to be, obviously, because Deadpool is such a fearsome name.

Logan matches Wade's pitch immaculately, curling his voice into a whine before going back to talking cheerily as if nothing happened. Nobody bats an eye, classic Wade behavior.

Any slight imperfections are hidden by the flashing lights and relaxed atmosphere and large crowd. It's hard to pick out their friends in a crowd, let alone tell the differences between their carefully crafted copycat plans.

Laura gets closer to "Logan" and asks him how "Wade" has been lately, playing along. He responds with a grunt and an exasperated but fond summary of Wade's newest hyperfixation, acting as if he didn't know any of the terminology for it.

She has to hide a shit-eating grin when some of the people who knew Logan from the X-mansion came up to greet him and ask him how he's been. Plan successful.

"Logan" reaches out and pats a few heads, lingering just long enough to show he cares but pulling away soon enough to avoid deep intimacy. He answers questions with the same gruff tone as the actual Logan, giving just enough information to satisfy their questions.

Miraculously, the night continues and they haven't been caught. This is quite frankly hilarious because the two had done their rounds with each other's friends and acquaintances and apparently knew enough about each other to answer accurately. It's a pretty big feat, and even Laura has to reluctantly admit she's impressed by how well they know each other to pull this off.

The two draw together near the end, bickering as usual and using each other's tactics. Wade has to stifle a giggle at Logan imitating his out to not break character, and Logan has to hold himself back from burying his face in his hands out of embarrassment.

The real challenge is when Vanessa comes in to greet "Wade," with her new boyfriend in tow. Because Logan knows how Wade should act: vaguely uncomfortable and awkward, cagey toward the new guy, with an undertone of yearning and regret.

He knows this, but it stings. It hurts to know that while Wade and him are living together, a part of Wade will always belong to Vanessa. He knows it's irrational and that he's the main person in Wade's life, but the thought of them together makes him feel vaguely nauseous.

But he promised Wade he'd try to do this with him. They'd made bets and everything about who would find out and who wouldn't. He didn't want to ruin his fun.

So Logan grits his teeth and shifts into character, acting a little tense but also relieved to see her. Acting a bit more closed off and tense when the new guy introduces himself, and a little embarrassed to be seen with "Logan." Guilty, almost, like he'd been caught doing something he shouldn't.

But Vanessa's expression isn't remorseful or awkward. Instead, she raises an eyebrow, crosses her arms, and asks him what's wrong. Tells him that something's clearly bothering him and that he knows he can come to her for anything.

Logan becomes confused. What was he doing wrong? Was he not giving her the "puppy dog eyes" convincingly enough? Was he not portraying the bittersweet feeling of seeing "the one who got away" well?

But then she asks him if he and "Logan" were fighting. If something was going wrong in their relationship for him to act so cagey and upset.

...And Logan is baffled. What the hell does them fighting have to do with this?

Until she continues. She tells him that she knows how much "Logan" means to him and that she knows Logan feels the same (it's obvious just in the way he looks at Wade), so she's sure they'll figure it out soon.

She chuckles and shakes her head and says that it's endearing how Wade constantly talks about Logan as if he's the only topic in the world. That she's glad he's happy and that she remembered him asking to meet her boyfriend at some point so he could "rate her taste." She pats his shoulder, placatingly, and tells him that she's always there to talk if anything happens. Then she leaves.

And oh.

Logan thought he had Wade's personality down to a science, that he knew almost everything about him. His thoughts, his feelings, his relationships. ...But apparently, he was wrong for once.

Then he takes a second to stand there and analyze his interactions with Wade. And he realizes that she was right. That Wade glancing constantly back at him when Vanessa was there wasn't awkward pining for his ex, but just Wade wanting to look at Logan.

Now that he thinks about it, Wade doesn't just do that around Vanessa. He did it around almost everyone. He'd intermittently glance at Logan with what he assumed to be embarrassment over him, but now he realizes it was endearment. Awe. Bashfulness and slight pride over getting to introduce Logan to his friends instead of being ashamed of him.

And Logan realized that maybe he didn't know everything about Wade. That maybe, some of his assumptions were based more on his own experiences and past rather than the present. That he let his jealousy and insecurity and anxiety cloud his interpretation until it became foggy, creating the same rough shape but without the structure.

...And Logan smiles, under the mask. A warm, incredulous thing. That Wade spent most of his time with Vanessa talking about him. That it was so obvious Wade loved him that everyone commented on it. He'd never had someone be proud of belonging to him before, showing him off like he was something worth coveting. It felt nice.

Eventually, he rejoined "Logan's" side. He sidled up to him and threw an arm around his shoulder, throwing out a flirty comment and cuddling closer. "Logan" let him, letting his shoulder slump and wrapping an arm around him in return.

"Wade" stared at "Logan," watching his expressions shift and the curve of his lips as they moved. He let the adoration and wonder swell up in him, seeing how accurately Wade played the part.

It was obvious that he was staring, but nobody batted an eye. They all accepted it as normal, as if it was perfectly in character for Wade to stare at Logan with full focus even while people flitted and talked around them.

When Logan leaned in to kiss Wade's shoulder, nobody said anything.

(They manage to make it through the night without anyone calling them out on their impersonation. When they reveal it the next day, everyone is shocked. It was so realistic that they couldn't even tell.

Well, almost everyone is shocked. Laura rolls her eyes and Vanessa hides a knowing smile behind the rim of her coffee cup.)

House Of Pain - On Point: i lovvvve house of pain omg ^-^ their second album is kind of a cult classic and while idk if i'd say i like it better than the first, it's still real good. and this is a banger single. that horn riff? awesome. we did this one for videos night (which i am still planning more of!!) and it was fun. there is a little surprise slur moment in the last verse which is. y'know. but as far as the sound goes i think this is basically unparalleled, i could listen to songs that sounnd just like this forever and ever

Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely: did i mention that i was sad. bc i was. this was another song i turned to when lying in bed late at night and just really going through it. the idea of being able to disappear off to somewhere, anywhere that wasn't where i was...... well you get it. tears a gal up. it's almost like this is a good song on a good album or something

Madness - One Step Beyond: yeah okay a couple songs from the skaugust WILT stuck around. i just adore that fucking deep growly riff that comes in after the spoken intro, i can never ever get enough of it. and it's so danceable but still maintains that narstyness. good good shit i love ska so terribly much and especially the rockingest rocksteady beat..... of MADNESS

Ada Rook - UNDERNEATH IT ALL: GOD i fucking love this album. it can be really dumb sometimes but it's so just. grrrrrrrrrh. ada rook is one of those musicians who just Gets It, i've often said that her music is the type of music i wish i could make. and the addition of ash nerve on this one creates that nice balance between abrasive screaming cyber rage and prettier clean sung choruses and harmonies. kind of the same effect the two achieve on angel electronics projects but i prefer the overall sound of this a lot

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - See Me: does anybody have the video of that weird as fuck animation with this song over it....... i watched that and was like idk what to do with this but the song jams i wonder who this is. and i found it in the notes and was like ahhhh that makes sense. the glizzard. and yeah idk the descending melody that kind of quavers around the lead line is just really otherworldly and takes me in right away each time i hear it. it's cool

The Specials - A Message To You Rudy: i feel i've said pretty much everythingg i wanted to say about this song. it's just one of the catchiest damn things ever

House Of Pain - I'm A Swing It: hey they're back!!! this one doesn't stick in my head as much as on point but again the sound is just immaculate and there's always so many corny-but-actually-really-good lines. it also always interests me how much everlast referecnes rock musicians and the like. he knows the audience lol

laura les/osno1 - nothing just hanging out: less of a song really, but still so representative of that coldness that represents me. none of the cemetary stuff is gonna be available on spotify, those are my local bandcamp files, and i don't have an individual upload of this track on youtube nor the time to create one, so i just put in an upload of the full ep. just listen to the whole thing it's really good and not that long. but yeah sorry lol

Crisis Sigil - Blood Semen Box-Elder: a favorite album cut from the new crisis sigil. this release my first proper exposure to the project and mannnn that shit is brutal. this one esp methinks. once again. rook music good

Nicki Minaj - Roman Holiday: was listening to this one because of worstsongever and being like whoever nominated this doesn't know shit. this slaps hard. i was never like especially a nicki fan but this just straight up goes. weird as fuck but that's kind of the appeal. if you want a REAL bad song, that will come later

The Front Bottoms - Au Revoir (Adios): no not this one!! well. maybe a bit. idk i like folk punk but never really cared about these guys that much? but i've met some people recently who do like them and was like yeah i could give this another spin. i do admittedly alwways think of the post that's like "this gif is silent but it still manages to sound like shit." it's not as deep of a song as it's probably supposed to be, but i still think there's something there. a lot of folk punk songs focus around character writing that acknowledge their flaws, including (and sometimes especially) the narrator and this is a good example without coming out and stating it. it piqued my inch rest

Roxy Radclyffe - Exemption's Dominion: i'll be real i don't exactly "get" what this song is about but it is freaky and cool. i was really interested to see the music video when it popped up in my subscriptions. the part of the song that does get stuck in my head is the little two-word pitchshifted phrases in one of the verses

Haggus - Uneducated Politician: someone recommended "mincecore" to me, and these guys in particular. weird as fuck sound but i think it's fun! maybe it's just the bad recording quality but the growls on this track in particular come out sounding reallll fucked up, which is what drew me to this selection in particular. still got a lot to learn about this whole scene but it's made it this far with me!

MC Boing - Car Song: tbh i don't tend to really like danny harle, i don't mind him but it's just not really my deal. this one got me, though, despite being dumb as all fuck. we are driving in a car car car car car car. mc boing indeed

Eminem - FACK: you did this to me, worstsongever (R.I.P.). it's annoying to me that i actually don't completely hate this thing.... it manages to be so stupid it loops back around to being funny for about a minute and then it just gets so old so quickly. but somehow still found itself stuck in my head :( many such cases

December 17th: Museum Party 

Laura sits on the edge of her bed with a smile as she rubs her belly, watching Y/N put her earrings on after helping her pick a full outfit for tonight. “Have you told Noa and Luna about the new baby yet?” She wonders, keeping her voice down just in case. 

Y/N shakes her head, “no, Atlas knows though, he wants to tell them on his birthday.” 

“Oh, thats cute,” Laura swoons. “How’d you make the sweetest boy on earth?” 

She shrugs, “I think it’s all Spencer's fault… so you have one too, now.” 

“Does it ever weird you out that your husband is my baby daddy?” She teases, “cause I’ve thought about it a little too hard and we share everything like most friends do but… we’ve shared literally everything.”

She manages to laugh at that, “I mean, it’s not that weird? If you went with Will, you guys would’ve had carbon copies of Henry and Rosie, 'cause you know… you’re like JJ’s twin.” 

“Yeah, I know… yet still somehow PJ looks like baby Henry?” Laura teases. “I wonder if his hair will darken as he gets older like Noa’s did.” 

“I miss her strawberry blonde baby curls,” Y/N swoons, thinking back to her perfect little girl. “But the brown suits her way better, she looks like Diana’s sister when she was younger…” 

“You’re stalling now…” Laura reaches her hands out for Y/N who takes them and helps her up off the bed and to her feet, “you ready to go now?” 

“I think so, do I look okay?” 

“Stunning, remember?” Laura gives her a wink. 

She helps Laura back down the stairs to the main floor where everyone else is, to find the cutest little scene ever. Spencer is already in his suit, sitting on the couch talking to Emily with all their kids together on the carpet. PJ is in Atlas’s lap, the girls on either side of him as they watch Elf on Netflix, giggling away as Will Ferrell eats pasta with sweets on top. 

They’re in matching Christmas pyjamas, and they have a big bowl of popcorn and a smaller bowl of m&m’s that they’re all sharing from, completely content. There’s no fighting, no hogging, no shoving… Luna picks up an m&m and puts it in Atlas’s mouth so he can keep holding PJ. It’s unbelievable how sweet they are with each other. The new baby will be so loved, she knows it already. 

“Look at you!” Spencer stands from the couch and makes his way to her, taking her hand and making her spin around (slowly though so she doesn’t feel sick) and making sure the kids see her too. “Look at how beautiful your mother is, kids!” 

Noelle gasps when she sees her, “So beautiful, mama!” 

“The prettiest!” Atlas agrees, “right Lulu?” 

She stands up and runs over with sticky fingers ready to touch the velvet of her purple dress. Spencer grabs her just in time, holding her back, “no touching, use your words.” 

“It’s so pretty mama, you look like a princess?” 

“Thank you,” she kneels down to be on her level, “can I have a kiss before we go?” 

Luna nods, leaning in and giving her a quick kiss. Y/N moves her brown hair out of her face and boops her nose with a smile, “be good for aunty Em and Laura, okay? Remember Santa and the elves are still watching right up until Christmas.” 

“I know,” she hurries off back to her spot in front of the TV then. 

Y/N follow her over, kneeling once more to press a kiss to the top of the other 2 kids' heads, “same goes for you, be good, please?” 

“I’ll make sure they’re good, mom,” Atlas gives a sweet smile, “look how good I am at holding Peej…” 

“You’re the sweetest big brother and cousin,” she ruffles his hair, “I love you, guys.” 

“Love you, mom,” he smiles at her once more and then turns back to the TV too. 

They’re all preoccupied and happy, the perfect time to slip out, so they take it. 

Spencer opens the passenger door for Y/N and she notices the car's already on and has been warming up for the last few minutes. It’s nice and toasty warm when she sits down, the seat warmers on and everything. 

Spencer holds her hand on the drive, caressing her with his thumb, “I meant it… you look absolutely amazing tonight, my love.” 

“Thank you,” she’s a big ball of smiles and love. “It’s all for you…” 

He practically growls, lifting her hand to his mouth to kiss her knuckles, the top of her hand and her wrist… if he wasn’t driving he’d be covering her in kisses and moving her to the backseat. But he can't. Not yet, at least. 

“You have to behave for at least an hour before we can sneak away… so many of my colleagues have asked if you’re coming this year because they love your books.” 

“Really?” He can’t believe it. 

She nods, “oh yeah, all those copies I had you sign last week were for their gifts.” 

“Okay that makes sense now, I thought those were for the auction?” 

“Some were, and they’ll probably make a lot tonight so thank you,” she glances over at him lovingly. “I love going to these stupid parties with you.” 

“You know I’d follow you anywhere babe.”

Spencer spends more time than he’d like answering questions about his book and mingling with strangers. He signs copies of books people brought knowing he’d be there, his Wikipedia page does say that his wife is a curator at the museum, so even a few fans are outside waiting for photos with him. 

It’s so weird to see people swoon over him now, he’s her big celebrity husband now that he’s been on so many interviews, podcasts and talk shows. He takes more photos inside the party, people already want to know when he’ll publish the third book but he hasn’t even started it. 

He wasn’t going to until next summer… now he’s not so sure if he’ll write it at all with the new baby coming. His family takes priority over his publishing schedule. But he lies and says soon to anyone who asks. 

When they do finally manage to sneak away, however, they giggle as they run hand and hand, down the tunnel from one museum, all the way down to the Natural History building. 

She got a bigger office earlier in the year and her first thought was “a couch would make Christmas Party sex easier…” 

They come tumbling through the door and she’s shoved against it almost immediately, his mouth on her neck and his hands working on the tie of her dress to let it fall open and expose all of her. With every stretch mark and scar, it tells a story of where she’s been and Spencer knows every tale. Her wonderful body has carried his children, his pride, his joy and all his love for the last 9 years now. Next year it will be a whole decade of them being hopelessly in love with each other, which felt insane. Insane but right. 

“How’d you wanna do this?” He whispers, “are we making it last or—

“I want to make it last,” she could cry she misses him so bad. “I wish we were in our bed but I can’t take not having you anymore, it’s been too long, Spence.” 

“Say no more,” he knows the drill. He picks her up and sits her down on the couch instead, dropping to his knees between her legs. “You locked the door right?” 

She shakes her head, “I don’t think so…” 

He takes just a moment to get back up and lock the door, using his time to shake off his jacket and place it on her desk. He unbuttons the cuffs on his shirt, rolling his sleeves up while looking at her with a smug smirk. He knew she thought he was the sexiest man alive, and as he gets older it’s just getting worse for her… he’s going a bit grey, he’s a lot thicker than he was when they first met, he looks so grown up and mature and sexy. The real definition of DILF. 

His tie comes off next, he undoes a few buttons and then he’s dropping to his knees in front of her again. “Ready, pretty girl?” 

“Mhm,” she melts into the couch, spreading her legs and lifting her hips so he can start pulling her panties down. He loops his fingers around the fabric hugging her hips and pulls them off ever so slowly until they’re off and he’s shoving them into his pants pocket. 

“I bet all those girls out there screaming your name would die to be here right now,” she teases. “What’s it like, rock star?”

“Woah, okay, sorry for the blue balls buddy but my wife’s water just broke on your kitchen floor,” Emily explains and Spencer’s phone is loud enough for Y/N to hear too. 

“Oh my god,” Y/N starts to panic, standing up from the couch and wrapping her dress back around herself and retying it. “Give me that,” she takes the phone from his hand, “have you called Will? Have him come stay with my kids while you head to the hospital and we’ll head right home. Is she okay?” 

“Will’s on his way, Laura’s okay, she thought it was just Braxton hicks… I cleaned up the kitchen floor—

“I don’t care about the floor, really, it’s okay. Do you need us to go to your place and get anything?” She asks, watching Spencer put his tie back on and fix his selves. 

“No, everything is in my car and ready to go… we’ll text you and give you updates and everything. Don’t rush home, the roads are getting bad with the snow that’s falling so be careful,” Emily warns, protective as ever. 

“You too then, good luck and tell her I love her— we love you both,” she says just for good measure. 

“She knows,” Emily smiles, “I’ll let you go, Will just pulled in the driveway.” 

“Bye,” Y/N hangs up and hands the phone back to him. “Looks like we’ve gotta make it quick after all.” 

“What?” Spencer was about to put his jacket back on, thinking they were done for the night. “Are you serious?” 

She nods and drops the tie on her dress again, letting it slip off her arms and onto the floor, “bend me over the desk for old time sake…”

He doesn’t need to be told twice.

31 Days of Horror - Day 21 - Dead Silence

As a child, I was petrified of almost anything scary. The thought of frightening myself wasn’t even in the equation, and I would go to severe lengths to avoid it. One day a somewhat friend of mine had passed on a story to me while we were walking home - he said a girl at our school had told him a tale of a doll who tore through families, and listening to it made both him and his brother have nightmares for months. Of course, this terrified me, and I made it my best effort to never end up on the receiving end of this story. Yet one day, I was in a classroom with a few other students, the girl being one of them, and there she bestowed someone else with the story. I was truly petrified, too stunned to continue my work, far too afraid to sleep, yet in a few days, the fear had faded, and what was left was intrigue. Later that year, I believe I read the Goosebumps book The Night of the Living Dummy, and I adored it. Likely, I would have loved James Wan’s Dead Silence too. 

Dead Silence feels like a pure horror film to me - if someone was told to dream up connotations of horror, this gothic nightmare feels perfect for that. From the creepy dolls to the jumpscares to the cobweb coated sets, this film has it all. There is a deep love I have for horror films like this. 

To start with, the opening credits to this film are gorgeous! Much like the rest of the movie, it is bathed in a perfect blue, the fast paced editing style felt reminiscent of Saw, and the imagery reminded me of an early American Horror Story credits. Everything about it is perfect for me, and it got me incredibly excited to watch the film, which is pretty rare for opening credits! I would kill to have the sketchbook of dolls; it is a work of art. 

I love the cold open too! I enjoyed both the characters we are introduced to: Ryan Kwanten’s Jamie Ashen and Laura Regan’s Lisa Ashen. They feel like a real couple to me, and although I have seen a multitude of complaints about the characters in this film, I enjoyed them enough! And when I don’t, I’m too in awe of the rest of the film to care. This cold open is a prime horror set up - it reminded me of The Ring in a sense! Everything about it works perfectly, it gets to the scares quickly, but they build up nicely, and this much is true for the whole film! Not to mention how amazing Lisa’s death is - the concept alone has me excited, but watching the sudden murder, and then looking at the marionetted corpse is amazing. 

In general, the kills are amazing, not so much for the acts themselves, although they are crafted excellently to be deeply suspenseful, but I did find the makeup and after results of the murders to be far more mesmerising. Despite being very similar, these deaths are never dull to watch, and I think it is all owed to how amazing this film is conceptually, as well as in execution!

Every set piece in this film is immaculate too, from the motel that feels as uncomfortable as they typically do, to the beautiful mansion Jamie’s father lives in, to the gorgeous gothic theatre, which is definitely my favourite! It just works so amazingly, the cobwebs are a lovely touch. Not to mention the dolls, but I want to discuss them more later. Everything here is so good and I had a blast moving from location to location - it felt so real to me, and it was a delight to live in this world. 

Maybe now is the best time to move onto the myriad of dolls, each one expertly crafted and incredibly memorable. Of course, Billy himself is great, his standardised appearance is fun to watch throughout the film and he is perfectly eerie and unsettling, his constant presence was anxiety inducing, especially as a result of how darkness is used in several shots, the possibility of Billy being wrapped inside of it is always at the back of your mind. The clown doll is also incredibly creepy, and it is a perfect finale to them all, it tops off the cases upon cases of dolls we witness before this, each one personal enough for it to feel haunting. Yet, the clown is designed to be scary, and the whole sequence is nail biting; the contrast of the white makeup to the darkness makes this horrifying figure stand out all the more! And of course, there is Billy the puppet from Saw lurking in one shot, which had me unreasonably excited as a huge fan of the series. 

I also want to bring attention to the way this film does its jumpscares. Every time the score stops, we are conditioned into fear, we await what will arrive to frighten us, yet no scare is done the same way - each one subverts our expectations, drags the scare out or fakes us out only to bring back what we feared most. Truly, this is excellent! 

Mary Shaw is such a fun villain, one of my favourites from all the movies I’ve watched this month. Everything from her flashback that is equal parts sad and scary, as you watch her grow dreary in depression and anger. Her design is conventionally creepy, yet it has purpose to it, and I feel the doll motif pulling the strings of her character are perfectly done. It is a horrifying sight when we first see her mutilated face, witnessing her ascension into dollhood. There is a little of Mary in us all. 

And of course, the patented James Wan plot twist. This, Saw (both of which were co-written by Leigh Whannel) and Malignant have mind bending twists that always get me super excited. I wasn’t expecting it for this film, and when I get round to watching his others I will try not to expect them either, because it makes them all the more satisfying. Once again, the choppy, fast paced editing appears as we watch the revelation, which is still scratching my brain while I write this. God I love all these films so much. 

Despite some wonky CGI and weird plot beats here and there, I still adored Dead Silence. I can believe people wouldn’t enjoy this one, but I find the mostly negative reviews to be somewhat curious! However, as far as I can tell there has been a change of opinion of this film as of late, and I’m glad it is able to pull its strings to make other people love it too.

Now we're getting to the good stuff. I feel like movies like Lisa Frankenstein & Immaculate are the main watches that have gotten me the most excited about this year's challenge since there's been some misses or just okay stuff so far. Interestingly enough, I haven't really veered off too much from recent releases to older stuff yet so we'll see if that changes as time goes on. All I know is, this has been one of those movies I've been hyped for since I watched the trailer & heard the concept which I really love. Been hearing lots of praise for it, which made me even more antsy to watch it. Now I like many was very disappointed about the AI issue (whether it seems small or not it did damper my mood a bit when I heard) and I get if some people never got past that. I guess in a small way I appreciated the honesty about it idk it's a tricky subject. But I just had to see this thing. Kevin Smith calling it 'Rosemary's Baby meets Network' (one of my all-time favorite movies ever btw) was a perfect little way to tease it to make me intrigued, tho you probably could have subbed Exorcist with Rosemary's (not that it goes full-on scary Regan but just enough to be creepy since Ingrid Torelli def owned that part of the movie) First off, hats off to David Dastmalchian getting that well-earned lead role. He's too good of an actor to simply always be a side character. He plays the talk show host role to a t (there was some deja vu moments to Fallon ngl lmao) making him charming but he also shows the swarmy sides to Jack throughout as well. Some of the rest of the acting is campy at parts but it suits with the 70's aesthetic so some of it is excusable but overall I think the casting was spot-on here. It really does feel like you're watching a broadcast in real-time and you're experiencing it with the audience. The ending is bonkers. Mostly in a good way, I mean. lol You're gonna be left on a cliffhanger if you can take that but man, it was a ride once we got there and I really don't know if they could have ended it any other way. But yeah, I had a lot of fun watching this and so far definitely making it to the Faves List at the end. It might not be for everyone but the love for it feels very justified to me.

I've watched a lot of b&w movies- I had a pretty deep fixation on Old Hollywood from like 2020 to 2022 and of course most movies back in the OH era were black and white- but to pick one in which as far as I remember the b&w really pops I have to go with LAURA (1944)!

20. A film where the vibes are immaculate

THE DOLL (1919). A crazy fairytale about a sex doll, a real girl, and a weirdo which yes was made in 1910s Germany.

23. A film that is a box-office flop

My beloved JOHNNY GUITAR (1954) which is one of my all-time favorite movies but also flopped real hard back in the 50s.

Elbow

iTunes Festival, Roundhouse 11.09.2012

“Throw the curtains open wide. One day like this a year’d see me right.” These days an Elbow gig is a group therapy session, thrumming with warmth and positivity, as though the band remain eternally grateful for their lofty status after so many years of fruitless struggle for recognition. And while it’s true their recent output tends more towards the anthemic than even their early offerings, who can resist the charms of Guy Garvey, the embodiment of witty, soulful, Northern intelligentsia with the common touch. The bear hug is all embracing. “Good evening Camden, and to all those watching at home in their underwear.”

Of course there’s more chat than a local radio DJ, and the band’s frontman knows how to work his audience, which is a good thing, as this multitude is not his hardcore fan base, having assembled through the iTunes ticket lottery. Once or twice frustration crosses his face at the crowd’s less than intimate knowledge of the group’s work.

Unsurprisingly the set leans heavily on the Mercury Prize winning ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, but departures from this also reverberate along the Roundhouse’s timbers. Following ‘Mirrorball’ the crowd is led through a mass breathing exercise, and the final communal sigh Garvey elicits is, well, breath taking, before the group flings itself into the pulsing maelstrom of ‘Leaders of the Free World’. A mid-set lacuna sees the group gather round the keyboard for ‘The Night Will Always Win’ followed by Craig Potter on piano for ‘Puncture Repair’; two deeply personal songs that seem to visibly move Garvey on stage. The themes of friendship and bruised adolescence are clearly close to his heart.

Elbow find the universal in the commonplace and this genuine feeling for humanity isn’t lost, in an arena in which you can swing a train, the venue’s original use. “While the Sex Pistols played downstairs,” quips Garvey. And so you see him either clutching the microphone to his lips, as if he’s blowing on some tinder in his hands, or spreading his arms open wide as the figurehead of a ship ready to carve through the audience. There’s an appreciation of simple good fortune in Elbow’s lyrical, gently haunted songs and knowing when your luck’s in. And if it does feel like a church in there by the end, rather than Mad Max’s Thunderdome, that’s a pretty good sermon about life to take home.

Despite being the cousin of former world squash champion Jahangir, Natasha Khan, alias Bat for Lashes, says she’s out of breath half way through her short, but immaculate set. New songs, including current single ‘Laura’, blend seamlessly with the old, such as ‘Sleep Alone’. This bodes well for the new album release in October, ‘The Haunted Man’. Physically a diminutive version of comedienne Josie Lawrence she puts everything into her performance, a rich, soaring voice delivering powerful, folktronica melodies. There’s a touch of Annie Lennox and Siouxsie Sioux in them and the overall effect is not diminished by some of the instrumentation having been pre-recorded.

my biggest hc is that reid is into fashion - not completely full blown fashionista but he definitely develops a sense of what looks good on him and spends some time working out his outfits for work. no one just accidentally dresses like reid dresses, a thought process must go into it!

i also have a fun little hc idea that one of his neighbours on his floor is a fashion design and she saw him one day and unconsciously studied him; looking him up and down like he was a work of art. he noticed and was like 'uh, hi?' and she was like 'oh my god sorry i just... you're really tall and thin and have great bone structure. sorry im not a creep or anything im a menswear designer' and when she finds things at work she thinks will look good on reid she gifts it to him. sometimes, if hes home and she needs help, he'll try on things for her and she has a bunch of polaroids of him in different outfits she's testing...

I think, since Reid is so much younger than the rest of the team, accomplished beyond belief and smarter than most people in the world, there is a clear understanding in his head that he’s dressing to look a certain way. He knows he could do the expected; wear a suit or jeans and a dress shirt like Gideon did, but he definitely actively wants to look different, but also good.

And yeah, sometimes he gets it wrong, sometimes the colour of his tie blanches against the colour of his shirt, but when he does get it right, when everything is pulled together seamlessly, it looks so fucking good. And he definitely is smug about it sometimes.

He picks out his clothes the evening before work, doesn’t want to have to hurry in the morning, and the clothes in his go bag always follow a certain colour scheme, and every piece can go with everything else. Honestly, sometimes the team are kinda shocked that his outfits are more put together than their own on the 3rd day of a case, and he just shrugs, flattered that someone noticed and is just like, “I plan ahead”.

OH AND YOUR IDEA WITH THE FASHION DESIGNER! SO GOOD! I think he knows subconsciously that he’s a very pretty person, that his bone structure is insane and his hair is always immaculate so when they approach him he’s flattered and shocked, but not baffled as to why they’re watching him. But then they’re telling him all these nice things about his looks, something no one had really ever outwardly paid attention to, and suddenly he’s like putty in that hallway because someone recognises something about him other than his brain or his memory or his fast reading pace. 

And yeah, it might be different and not something he’s used to, but suddenly you’re at his place a lot, with him trying on clothes for you as you’re designing them, and you’re talking about what clothing means to people, to cultures, religions, everything. And he might start talking about the history of a plain men's dress shirt, but you love it because you can tell he actually values fashion and what it can do for so many people. 

He loves when you come to his with some jumpers from the newest fashion season, and you know he’s not one for big bold colours or crazy patterns, so you always try to stay with something neutral and practical. Also, for him, comfiness is key! He can’t go running after unsubs in pants that are too tight or in a shirt that’s too restricting!

scratch that. he absolutely starts as one of those Aesthetic™ cooking channels like Cooking tree, HANSE, Sweet The MI or Nino’s Home.

his channel is called Souvenir because he’s not THAT original you can’t expect everything from a man, people. 

he starts off doing these voiceless cooking videos, but after a voice and face reveal at 2 million followers where he cooks something for his followers as a thanks...well, who wouldn’t want more of that sultry voice and glorious face

Victor’s channel is kind of comparable to Junskitchen, a rather relaxed, casual atmosphere combined with exquisite, refined cuisine

if he feels like it, he does a voice-over, otherwise he just puts calm jazz, blues or r&b over his cooking

HAS done an ASMR special. low-key dislikes the video because he has to whisper voice-overs but people LOVE it

Lucien’s channel LucidLight is a tad bit all over the place

he’s a man of many talents, and his channel reflects just that

i’m not saying it’s a disorganized channel, because the theme is very much there - the uniform theme in Luci’s content is a cozy background, a cup of tea and a soothing thumbnail

i mean that content-wise, his subscribers don’t really know what they’re going to get next...he has a slightly similar style to the YouTuber simon plant 

his content varies from interesting science theories to poetry reading sessions to ASMR to painting/sketching to cooking and much, much more

he has an heavenly soothing, smooth voice. it’s his trademark since Lucien doesn’t show his face on camera. ever. 

doesn’t have a TON of subs, because his channel is a bit of a niche thing, but I’d say he has 1,2 million subscribers and 400k followers on his added ‘business’ Instagram

he holds a lot of live streams on Instagram/YouTube (i know Moments exists in the game, but that’s more like a Facebook or Twitter kind of app...) and is always shown with just his torso and neck in frame. the lives usually include some poetry reading and generally just having a nice, relaxing chat with his followers. they can last up to 5 hours at once, and YOU know it’s because he doesn’t need sleep like a normal human being, but his fans are still asking questions about his timezone
