Oggi ho letto quasi tutto il pomeriggio, strategicamente posizionata tra condizionatore e ventilatore per resistere al caldo del tutore che mi farà da giubbino per almeno altri 20 giorni. Ieri alla visita dopo la tac mi hanno un poco spaventata prospettando addirittura due settimane in più, ma voglio restare ottimista per ora.

Leggere libri era una cosa che facevo soprattutto in spiaggia in questi ultimi anni, quindi pochissimi giorni all'anno di inmersione totale per ore intere, ma da gennaio, complici degli improvvisati book club con delle amiche, ho preso l'abitudine di leggere di più anche "a casa" e spero di non interrompere il ritmo.

Oggi ho finito The Puma Years di Laura Coleman e mi è piaciuto un sacco, mi sono immersa nella giungla boliviana con Laura e Wayra, mi sono commossa più di una volta e spero che arrivi presto un'edizione italiana da poter regalare a chi non legge in inglese.

Look, I'm gonna tell it to you as clean as I can.

Actors and Actresses are narcissistic, shallow, neurotic, empty people, which, as a whole, can't be trusted. They'll do and say whatever it takes not just to get a role, but to get even a few more lines in a script. They are adult people that play make believe for a living because they, generally, don't like themselves and want to be someone else. To deify or put on a throne, anyone, that plays pretend for a living is plain ignorant and you're asking for your heart to be dashed.

No one enters entertainment and comes out a better person, yeah?

There is a very few actors/Actresses that are jobbing, lunch pail working performers that are good and normal people.

Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jenna Coleman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldu, Matthew Marsden, Aiden Turner, and Sam Heughan.

The only standard you should have for an actor or actress is these three questions:

Are they respecting the character?

Are they respecting the Lore?

And - most importantly - are they respecting the fans?

I hit Olivia Cooke with the fucking truck all the time, because, Olivia Cooke does not live up to these basic principles. She doesn't care about Alicent, in fact she hates Alicent. She doesn't give a fuck about the lore, and is actively campaigning to change it to virtue signal. And she openly does not care about the fans unless their gender and sexuality gives her cashe to big-up her career.

Like I've said, you can love a character and dislike an actor/actress. I'd give my sword for Alicent Hightower ... and at the same time I think Olivia Cooke is a dishonest snake.

Same thing with Lena Headey. Lena Headey might legitimately be retarded, okay. She is so stupid that she couldn't spell "Cat" if I spotted her the "C" and the "A", right? Lena Heady also happens to check all three of the boxes. She loved playing Cersei. She respected the Lore around Cersei and didn't try to change her character to make her look better. And while she had a terrible history prior of out right abusing her own fans, she learned to appreciate the people that paid her fucking bills, in the end.

When it comes to Ewan. I wouldn't wear those clothes, and I question the manhood and self-respect of any man who wears them - gay or straight. But at the end of the day, Ewan Mitchell has a right to do whatever the fuck he wants to do. Or, more succinctly, I don't give a fuck about his or any other actor's personal lives.

What they do on their time is their business. But what they do on my time is my business. And since I'm paying a subscription for "MAX" and thus paying his fucking salary, I expect him to not waste my time with half-ass performances and hack effort, right?

But he hasn't waisted my time.

Ewan Mitchell has been a model of professionalism and passion when it comes to portraying Aemond.

He has put more thought than anyone - except for Glynn-Carney - about his character.

He is dedicated to playing the character right.

And he has been exemplary in his treatment and interaction with the fans of the show and the franchise as a whole.

And that's really all you can ask of an actor in your franchise. What he does and believes in his personal life is his affair. As long as he doesn't disrespect me than I won't disrespect him. That simple.

Once more, you guys have to stop putting actors/actresses on thrones, cause they're only human ... and, in many cases, not very good ones. Love the character, stan the character, but hold these real life people to simple standards that they should be holding themselves too.

I'm not coming down on you nonny, but I've had thirteen years of this shit on Tumblr of fangirls worshiping an actor or actress in cult like status because they like a character.

You guys have got to stop doing that, cause it only leads to bad things.

There may not be a dance soiree, but there is hateration and holleration:

THE JETTY (2024): Exasperating new BBC miniseries, created by Cat Jones and directed by Marialy Rivas, about a detective constable named Ember Manning (Jenna Coleman), raising her teenage daughter Hannah (Ruby Stokes) in the small Lancashire town where she grew up, where everyone knows her and no one takes her very seriously. When Ember realizes that a recent arson might be connected to the past disappearance of a girl named Amy (Bo Bragason), who went missing when she and Ember were teenagers, Ember tries to reopen the case, and butts heads with a crusading true crime podcaster (Weruche Opia), who's also interested in the story and has information about it that she won't share. Ember also realizes Amy's disappearance may have something to do with her daughter's now-dead father, who got Ember pregnant when she was only 17. The story alternates between engaging if uncomfortable drama (like an ongoing flashback sequence about Amy's manipulative flirtation with her friend Kitty (Laura Marcus), who was shyly in love with her despite Amy using her as cover for her secret affair with a shitty older man) and a boatload of stupid pseudo-true-crime white libfem copaganda. It's hampered at every turn by Coleman, who's not nearly as good an actor as some of her costars and seems completely out of her depth playing a cop in what wants to be a socially conscious procedural. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Yes, and if the story had focused more on Amy and Kitty, it might have made its points without all the copaganda horseshit. VERDICT: Some of the segments not centering Coleman are compelling, but Coleman is awful, and the script's fundamentally reactionary mindset and its preoccupation with imputing carceral solutions to misogyny are both clumsy and distasteful (not least because Jones uses one of the story's only Black characters as a rhetorical prop). CWs apply for grooming and sexual violence.

THE LITTLE GIANT (1933): Edward G. Robinson branched out into gangster comedy with this comedy of manners about a notorious Chicago bootlegger, one Jim "Bugs" Ahearn, who decides to retire to Palm Springs with his most loyal stooge (Russell Hopton), where he crashes polite society and falls for ostensibly respectable society dame Polly Cass (Helen Vinson). Meanwhile, Bugs' new housekeeper/girl Friday Ruth Wayburn (Mary Astor), a bankrupt heiress whose family home Bugs has just bought, plays Cyrano de Bergerac while trying to bite her tongue about Polly, whose family is nearly as crooked as Bugs. Not nearly as silly or chaotic as Robinson's later turn in the conceptually similar A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER, and its pre-Code indulgences are pretty modest, but it's an enjoyable romp with some amusing social satire. I ended up wishing the script had made more of the relationship between Bugs and Ruth, although Astor is great as always and her rapport with Robinson is one of the film's best features. CONTAINS LESBIANS? No, although Robinson does use the f-slur at one point. VERDICT: Enjoyable, but not as essential as the sillier A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER.

MATINEE (1993): Delightful comedy about a shlock movie impresario named Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) — an obvious pastiche of real-life producer/promoter William Castle — who pulls out all the stops for the premiere of his new Grade-Z sci-fi/horror epic, MANT, at a movie theater in Key West, Florida, during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, setting into motion all manner of chaos. As with the tonally similar A CHRISTMAS STORY, MATINEE is sort of notionally a kids' movie, about two friends (Simon Fenton and Omri Katz) who have each managed to score a date with a cute classmate: horny good girl Sherry (Kellie Martin, who at this age could have plausibly played Sara Michelle Gellar's younger sister) and budding leftist Sandra (Lisa Jakub), who begins to movie by getting herself suspended for protesting that bomb drills would be useless in an actual atomic attack. However, the movie is really aimed as much as adults who nostalgically remember that age (and/or era), and it's an affectionate, in-joke-laden homage to a now mostly vanished genre of cheesy cinematic nonsense (embodied in the clips we see from the MANT film-within-a-film, which are very funny). Goodman is wonderful, as is Cathy Moriarty as his weary girlfriend/star. Robert Picardo pops up in a supporting role as the hysterical theater owner, who's built a bomb shelter in the basement because he's convinced the world is about to end. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Nah. VERDICT: Great fun.

In the anticipation of the suspenseful nail-biting thriller DANGEROUS GAME: THE LEGACY MURDERS which is available In Select Theaters and On Digital October 21 from SP Media Group,  I recently had the opportunity to interview the star of this film, Jon Voight (“Coming Home,” “Midnight Cowboy,” “Anaconda”) and also director Sean McNamara (“Soul Surfer”). The first time she licks me, I don’t know what to do. “She’s licking me!” I hiss. Jane laughs, crouched on the other side of the door, hugging her knees. “Don’t get too excited. It’s mostly for the salt.” But Wayra haughtily butts my arm with her forehead, turning it over so that she can lick the other side. It’s almost— almost— possible to forget that she’s in a cage and I am not. It feels as if it should be the other way around. The jungle out here with her, us in there. It cloaks her bottle- green. Her tongue is rough, ripping. It hurts more than I thought it would, but I don’t want her to stop. She’s making a low noise and it sounds to my desperate, exhausted ears like acceptance. She’s leaning over my arms, head down, one relaxed paw balanced up on the edge of the fence, licking, licking, licking. My skin is turning raw and the rest of me feels nothing, it’s only this small spot of skin that she’s touching. That’s the only part of me that exists. Everything else, the missed bus, the possibilities of town, my whole existence before this, fades. She’s spirited me away to a place where cages aren’t real. I can’t believe this is the same cat that hissed at me on my first day. She looks the same but she’s not. Everything is different. My head is full and I’m smiling so widely that I think for a ridiculous moment I might burst into tears again. What’s happening to me? “Thank you, Wayra.”

She tells me her theory that, for her, rescued animals are like onions. You work so hard to peel off one layer of anxiety, only to expose another, and then another that you had absolutely no idea was hiding underneath. And because all of us really are no different from any of the animals here, because we’re all messed up and broken in our own individual ways, we’re like onions too. “Y eso es lo que hace el parque,” she says with a smile. “And that is what the parque does, no? Peels off our layers”— she taps me sharply on the chest—“ you and me. One after another after another, and we learn new things about ourselves, and about the animals that we’re with, cada día. Every day. Juntos. Together. We do it together. Por eso me enamoré de este lugar. That is why I fell in love, no? With this place. You never know what is going to happen.”

Harry used to say the swamp teaches people who they are. I thought it was macho bullshit, and it was, but he was also a little bit right. For me, it was only when I started to trust the swamp, really, not to not kill me, because it will, it will totally kill me, but just to let me be who I am. A frail, strange human in a frail, strange, composting, muddy world. Once I’d fallen in love with the swamp, as I’d fallen in love with Wayra, I think that’s when I fell in love with my life.

Environmental justice cannot be separated from social justice. The two are deeply intertwined. Over the years, I’ve learnt this. I’ve learnt that the stories that affect Wayra are similar, and connected, to the stories that affect a lot of people, a lot of different species, and a lot of places. Health, for example, and happiness. Loss and homelessness, soil and waste, food, water, work, isolation and otherness.

I don’t know if art can change the world. I don’t think there is just one world to change, there are thousands, millions of worlds, and of worldviews. But I do think that art can change people, just as Wayra, Coco, Mila and all their stories changed me. I will never forget my realisation in the forest, about my choices, and my privileges. I can’t take everyone I know to Bolivia. I can’t introduce Wayra, and the parque, to everyone. But they opened my eyes. They gave me a gift. They changed my world and because of them, I set up ONCA in an effort to repay that gift, just a little bit. To create a space where Wayra and the parque, and the multitude of worlds they are entangled with, might change other people’s stories too.
