As the months creep into each other, Yuri starts letting you out of his sight more often. Not without watching you closely with SSS equipment unlawfully focused on you, but he just can't keep watching you waste away just in case you try sonething dangerous. At this point, if you decide to embark in treasonous business he will just make sure to stop you himself and do away with the evidence.

There's no particular reason for that.

You start dancing lessons because you miss dancing. You don't much like ostanian dances but you like your dance teacher. You tell Yuri all about how pretty she is, how strong her hands are when she guides you. Yuri sort of wants to have a little less than kind chat with her. But he doesn't. Partly due to a lack of opportunity and partly because you would go back to wasting away if he ruined this for you. He can't bring himself to.

Yuri also starts babysitting his niece more often. At first he keeps telling you about how she is the dumbest kid in the world. Then, slowly, he starts comparing her to Yor when she was a kid, and starts having short bursts of tenderness towards the kid. By the time he notices, he is already bringing her cookies and complaining about (but still watching) the spy propaganda she calls her favourite show. You want to meet the kid. Because she looks adorable in pictures and because you know she drives Yuri crazy and you want to high five her, befriend her maybe, plot against Yuri...

In any case, one unremarkable day, Yuri asks you about home.

He says "How was it? Your home I mean" you give a sigh, assaulted by a thousand memories of sunny days, cracked veredas, dirty streets and clean streets and trees lining all the sidewalks. You think about tilos, pines and jacarandás, lilac and magestic. You think about beaches and mountain lakes, you think about cumbias, reggaetons, traps, ballenatos, bachatas and you think about La gozadera. It tugs a teary smile out of you. There is so much you love and hate about home. You love the people, you hate the people, you despise the goverment, you love the biomes, you hate the sexist boys of when you were growing up, you love the women who enpowered you to want better, god, you miss the food.

"It was beautiful. The skies were always blue, except when it rained, obviously, but here it's almost always rainy or cloudy. Back home the skies were azure and spring smelt like life. I remember it better before the dictatorship. We used to go out clubbing with my friends, not that often cause we were all broke, but we would drink vodka and twerk all night, and go home clutching our keys between our fingers. We stopped going to parties when the dictatorship started. There were still a few, you know, but it became too risky."

"What's twerking?" You blush and give a little high pitched laugh.

"Uh, haha, its a sort of dance. You probably wouldn't like it. Reminds me of my best friend, she was the best dancer and the best friend I could ask for, she was really good at belly dancing, she tried to teach me but I never got past the basics. I hope she still sneaks around to parties, she always tried to get me to go with her, but I never dared. I'd do anything to have gone at least once, to listen to her screaming at me to divorce the movement of my hips from my torso. Did you know she's the one who taught me how to make coffee with spices? I feel so lost without her," you hang your head, spread the palm of your hand over your face. "she was bit like my mum." Yuri doesn't know what to say, so he goes for the first thing he picks out from your diatrive.

"I thought you didn't get along with your mum."

"We were complicated I guess. My mum grew up in the dictatorship before mine. She was obsessed with being descreet, with being so thin she'd disappear in the shadows, so perfect no one would question her. She tried to make me like that, partly because I never thought I would live through what she lived throuh but I don't think anyone could iron me straight. And by god she tried. My mum and my best friend, they were both obsessed with cleaning and perfect things. But my friend understood that I would never be perfect and still loved me. My mum, she could never accept me, but that's okay, because she would call me her 'bebita', her tiny big bebita and she would hug me very close when I cried. I wish I had told her something like 'te quiero mucho, mamita' the last time I went out her door. She must be so heartbroken to have lost yet another part of the family. " Yuri ponders about the families he has separated in the same way yours has been.

Finally he just says:

"I never really knew my parents. My sister raised me and she worked herself bloody at butchery to keep me fed and clothed and if I somehow found myself somewhere where I knew she didn't exist, I think I too would be heartbroken."

"Sometimes I wonder if I'm alive. Do you?" And Yuri thinks you are. You are the most alive thing in his house. You scream, you sing and cry and laugh and gather cats like a cat siren and you make so much noise it's impossible to confuse you for anything other than a living, breathing being.

"You are."

"I didn't mean me."

"Then, sometimes, I guess."

Yuri feels human when you get into this conersations.

"Yuri, I want to go out." You say, and your eyes say please, don't keep me prisoner. Yuri doesn't stand a chance.

"Get changed, I didn't want to cook anyways."

After you saved him from his overblot and you both actually spent a little bit of time with each other he discovered he was very wrong

He heavily sympathizes with your sleeping condition and what that could potentially mean for you if you're forced to follow through with your destiny

He also loves how you manage to keep so upbeat in spite of that, it's something he truly admires about you and another thing he can really use in his life

That doesn't mean you don't give him gray hairs from time to time since you've now made the ADeuce duo into a trio

He's tired please let him rest

Speaking of rest, he's become very vigilant on any time you may be starting to doze off

He makes sure the dorm students always have something handy to ensure a comfortable rest for you

It's probably a rule to not disturb any sleeping party and anyone who does is immediately collared

He may have gotten character development but he's willing to pretend he didn't from time to time if it's for your happiness

You are always happily available to help decorate for unbirthday parties since 1. parties are obviously your specialty, and 2. you wouldn't miss a chance to add a little Briar touch to it

He relentlessly teases you as his communication of affection (he does it to Vil for entertainment, he does it to you because of a crush)

He discovers your sleeping condition on the very few times he's awake and you both are having a conversation at lunch

He turns his head away for a second and BOOM, face down in your food

At first he thinks it's like a joke or something

He tries to get you up but it obviously doesn't work, he doesn't entirely understand what's happening until the ADeuce duo explain it to him

He has you talk to him about it more in depth later, about your family line, the curse, your destiny, all of it

This makes him kinda feel bad

He takes advantage of his opportunities both in school and his relationships by sleeping since he knows he can't really be punished for it

but for you sleeping is quite literally a curse that's keeping you from everything you want to do, and will eventually be the reason you lose everything you love

Because of this it not only makes him determined to be better about his lazy habits but also to make sure you don't go back to your world

he won't keep you if you really wanna go back but he couldn't stand to lose you to some dumb destiny that you have no say in, he relates all too well to that feeling

That doesn't mean he doesn't use your random sleeping spells as an excuse to fall asleep himself

Like Riddle he's very good at telling when you're about to fall asleep but since his senses are so sharpened it kind of just comes naturally to him

He definitely became more aware of your condition after a party

You had been invited to one of his many parties which you attended of course and after a long night of dancing and food you just crashed

At first he thought it was because the party tired you out but became worried when his efforts to wake you up in the morning didn't work

he sought out Ace and Deuce hoping maybe they could wake you up, which they did by blasting music, but before that they told him about your sleeping habits

He felt so bad, after all he couldn't imagine sleeping for years with no way to spend time with his friends

This makes him want to throw even more parties so you can spend as much time with everyone as possible

You both use this reason to guilt Jamil into letting you throw parties

He doesn't like that but he does enjoy when you use parties as a form of tutoring

It keeps Kalim entertained and leaves Jamil with plenty of free-time

Because of this Jamil has mixed feelings about you but appreciates when you help him out nonetheless

One of the many kinds of parties thrown at Scarabia is obviously slumber parties

Kalim will always without fail initiate a pillow fight

You probably fell asleep while he was doing your makeup

He tried to wake you up for a while but after he discovered he couldn't he just finished your makeup and asked Rook what that was about since he has tabs on everyone in school

Rook is the one to bestow the knowledge of your sleeping condition on Vil

He would probably try to get more information out of you the next time you two hang out together

If you tell him about the destiny you had back in your old world he would be very disappointed

he sees so much potential in you in so many ways and knowing that one day that and everything else will have to be taken from you because of some stupid curse is just so sad (alexa play despacito-)

This makes him determined to pack in as many activities and such with you as possible

This includes a lot of fashion shows and photoshoots as well as just regular things for you both to do together

He appreciates your upbeat energy but the type of parties you throw are not often for him

Though he'll sometimes go anyways to make sure you don't do something stupid or fall asleep in a bad place

Speaking of sleep, if he can't ensure you have a proper sleep schedule, he'll at least make sure you'll have a proper sleep

there's basically a drill in Pomefiore anytime you fall asleep to get you to the nearest comfortable surface with only the best pillows and blankets

During one of said drills Epel would probably get a sharpie and draw something stupid all over your face

If Vil sees he'll quietly scold Epel while wiping it off of your face in your sleep

If you find out before Vil, you and Epel would probably laugh and set up an elaborate prank to do it to Vil when he's asleep then probably blame Rook or something

He loves you so much that I have no doubt he would secretly be trying to find a formula for a potion that can rid you of this curse forever

Just like Kalim you would be someone he tends to avoid because of your hyperactive attitude, but also like Kalim you don't let that happen

Not necessarily in a group setting just together playing games or having a spa day or something

He prefers this to always spending his time in his room

He likes his games and shows but it gets lonely fast when you don't have someone to share things with in person

His outward reaction to your destiny is probably something equivalent to "That's rough buddy"

But internally he's losing it

You're one of the few people that gave him the attention and love he craved but now you'll have to be taken away from him because of something your mother was cursed with and a book?

To add even more salt to the wound, he came to a school of magic but curses and such aren't his area of expertise so he can't really do much to help you in the long run

just like the others he would definitely want to do as many things with you as possible before your time together runs out

One time you threw him one of those parties where everyone gets together and plays different kinds of video games

He hates parties but that's the one time where someone has taken into account his interests when hosting one

he was incredibly happy

the more that you build his self-esteem up, I think the more confident he would be to try and convince either Vil or Malleus to help him lift the curse on you

he'd be close to pissing himself the whole time but he can't risk a life without you

When he hears your name and what your destiny is he would probably think it's fate that you two met

He always says that since your name is Briar you were basically fated to become the second king of Briar Valley

You think he's joking, he is not

He's very aware of what one should do in the case of surprise sleeping spells (he basically raised Silver with Lilia he knows what he's doing)

but I feel like yours requires different protocols since yours is more of a surprise since you just randomly doze off whenever, and because it's much harder to get you back up

When you fall asleep he'll usually just wait it out but it makes his mind wander to sad places

Knowing of your destiny he tries to be cool about it but deep down he's very angry

Not at you of course but at the hand you've been given in life

He didn't always have such a great life, he was brought up very lonely, but you made these school years so full of joy for him that he couldn't bear to lose you especially not in a way that so much resembles what he will grow up to be

He knows that one day you'll potentially have to sleep for 100 years, meaning malleus won't be able to see you, his closest friend and lover, for 100 years except behind a glass coffin

When you wake up he always tell you "I would be willing to wait 100 years or more if that means I can see you again"

If you didn't he would probably be because he managed to life the curse from you

EAH theory/plot hole fixer #1

Okay so in EAH we know Briar and Rosabella are cousins canonically right? Right. But there's a plot hole there with the fact Briar's mom would have needed to be asleep for a hundred years, so it's near impossible for their moms to be sisters. We also know that Briar's dad and Rosabella's dad don't get along. My theory/plot hole fixer is that it's actually their dads that are related, not the moms.

In the canon story of Beauty and The Beast, Rosabella's dad was cursed to become a beast after he, a snobbish prince, was horrible to a enchantress. In the EAH universe, Briar's dad hates Rosabella's because he was a beast.

My theory is that the role of The Beast is only inherited by curses, mainly curses against arrogant princes like Daring Charming in the beginning of Epic Winter. When Rosabella's dad was cursed, his brother resented him for taking on such an un-princely form. And we can assume that the brothers were Afro-Latina, passing those traits to their daughters. Plus, we can assume their marriages occurred AFTER that generations Sleeping Beauty finished her 100 year sleep.

So yeah there are my thoughts/fix it idea. Let me know if y'all want to here more or some headcanons I have!

Presenting Crimson Briar, my fan weapon for Summer Rose!

Design notes and my many contributing Summer headcanons under the cut.

Its main mode is a sword, with a 19.5-inch blade and a total length of 27.7 inches. The short length and straight double-edged blade meant for slashing is based on a Roman gladius. The blade is composed of 13 individual segments, each with two short single-edged blades slotted into a core piece, inspired by the Mesoamerican macuahuitl.

Controlled by the hilt trigger, the blade segments can detach from one another and stretch along a central cord, forming a bladed whip. The hilt can also twist out to become a short staff, allowing the weapon’s reach to be extended two different ways. Finally, the outer layer of the pommel expands outward into a short Incan-style mace.

I designed Crimson Briar with two goals: synergize with what we know of Team STRQ’s weapons and fighting styles, and represent a reasonable extrapolation of Summer’s personality and allusions.

Both Qrow and Raven have very versatile weapons, with Harbinger’s many different forms and Omen’s arsenal of dust blades. As I headcanon Summer as Qrow’s partner at Beacon, I made her weapon similarly versatile to his, with individual transforming parts that can combine into a wide variety of forms for battlefield adaptability. Besides following Qrow’s style, a versatile weapon also helps Summer adapt her fighting strategies around Qrow’s semblance.

I’ve adopted @typeoneninja’s headcanon for Taiyang’s weapon and semblance: a sniper rifle/staff and the ability to telekinetically pull teammates to himself or himself to them. This makes Tai both the only support and only proper ranged combatant of Team STRQ (Harbinger’s shotgun is still for close-range). While unbalanced, this works as STRQ is both literally and symbolically Ozpin’s strike team, and ultimately fell apart when challenged. Many people seem to headcanon Summer as the team sniper, but I think it makes more sense for Ruby to have based her fighting style around her two living parental figures.

My headcanon semblance for Summer is Petal Shift, which allows her to shift to an invisible and intangible state in a burst of white and red rose petals. This shares the aesthetics and battlefield maneuverability of Ruby’s semblance, but not the speed, as Summer never physically changes form. In practice, it works more like May’s semblance, sacrificing some stealth and the area-of-effect variation for nigh-invulnerability while active.

Summer’s weapon and semblance combine for an agile, hit-and-run fighting style that focuses on controlling opponents’ movement. The reach of her weapon lets her keep enemies at a distance, using her semblance and Crimson Briar’s whip to dodge attacks and maneuver around the battlefield. She was best at fighting groups of weaker enemies like Beowolves, which she could take out despite relatively low raw power while never getting surrounded.

Crimson Briar is named to resemble Crescent Rose (two-syllable Cr–s– word plus short plant-related word). Crimson highlights the main color and calls back to “Red Like Roses”, as well as Ruby’s name, while Briar references the whip blade and is a less ideal part of a rose, symbolizing how Ruby will likely succeed somewhere Summer failed.

Briar also combines with Rose from Crescent Rose to make Briar Rose, the alternate name of Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. I consider Sleeping Beauty to be one of Summer’s main allusions, as she has likely been “put to sleep” for a number of years by an ancient witch who lives in a desolate castle and commands demons. The weapon’s design is meant to evoke a rose as well, with the flexible whip and blades resembling a thorny vine, the thread of the hilt a curling stem, and the expandable pommel a blooming rosebud.

The gladius is an ancient Roman infantry weapon, representing how Summer exists in the show’s past and is idealized by those around her. I picked the macahuitl and Incan mace to reference my Latina!Summer headcanon, and because ancient American weaponry is relatively unused in RWBY so far. And the way the weapon breaks apart to form the whip and mace evokes “Thus Kindly I Scatter” and the scattering petal imagery from Summer’s V1 opening and V6 flashback scenes.

Feels kinda weird talking about this, but... I was thinking of making Ann POC. Like... I dunno, it just feels right, I guess? And it’s not like most of the cast isn’t white. But I don’t want to fall into tokenization or stereotypes. [I have considered making Briar Mexican-American, like I have with another character that came from the same base character Briar sprang from, but my reservations are kind of complicated to explain here]

I absolutely accept Nina as Latina, of course. I’m also open to adding more POC characters to the cast if you have suggestions. I’m just... It’s weird doing this with characters that I didn’t come up with, y’know? It’s a lot easier for me to be diverse in my original fiction because I feel more confident there, I guess? I dunno if any of this makes sense, sorry.
