Sergio Mendes, Brazilian singer, dies following long COVID battle - Published Sept 6, 2024
The Brief Grammy-winning Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes died Thursday.
His family confirmed his passing Friday in a statement to The Associated Press.
Mendes died following months battling the effects of long COVID.
Sergio Mendes, a Grammy-winning Brazilian musician with international fame, has died. He was 83 years old.
The musician’s family confirmed the news Friday of Mendes’ passing.
"His wife and musical partner for the past 54 years, Gracinha Leporace Mendes, was by his side, as were his loving children," they said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Mendes last performed in November 2023 to sold out and wildly enthusiastic houses in Paris, London and Barcelona."
Mendes died on Thursday following months battling the effects of long COVID.
His Grammy-winning Brazilian musician hit "Mas Que Nada" made him a global legend and was one of the songs that helped popularize the Brazilian music genre bossa nova worldwide in the 1960s.
In 2006, a modern version of the song topped U.S. charts, as performed by Black Eyed Peas. It was included on his album "Timeless," produced by will.i.am and featuring Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake and the Black Eyed Peas, among others.
Mendes won the 1992 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for "Brasileiro" and two Latin Grammy Awards. He also received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for Best Original Song for "Real in Rio," from the animated film "Rio."
"Sergio Mendes was my brother from another country," trumpet player Herb Alpert wrote on Facebook, along with a photo from decades ago, sitting next to Mendes at the piano. "He was a true friend and extremely gifted musician who brought Brazilian music in all its iterations to the entire world with elegance."
Mendes’ family said they will provide details regarding funeral and memorial services at a later date.

Celia Cruz Will Be The First Afro Latina On A U.S. Quarter
In 2024, the late Celia Cruz will be the first Afro Latina face on a U.S. quarter, part of the American Women Quarters series that also honors suffragettes, civil rights defenders, abolitionists and scientists who changed history.
That Cruz is part of that storied list is no surprise to the legions of fans around the world that recognize the lasting legacy of the "Queen of Salsa" as one of the first truly global crossover Latin artists.
Cruz, who won several Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, received the National Medal of Arts, among the nation's highest honors, in 1994. She has a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame and one on Miami's famous Calle Ocho, and has a school in New York City named after her.
Black and Cuban, Celia felt very proud to be Afro Latina, her executor said. Pardillo Cid said Cruz was the first Black Latina to sing in Spanish on American television and perform at Carnegie Hall, where artists such as Billie Holiday, Judy Garland and The Beatles performed.
Pardillo Cid said he still gets letters from fans saying how proud they are that “30 or 40 years ago Celia Cruz already represented us.” -(source: nbc news)

I guess you all heard the news from Billboard? About the K-Billboard awards.
God, the segregation, because yes, it is segregation, of the western market, especially the US market is extremely obvious and repulsive.
I know they did it with Spanish music, they created the Latin Billboard awards, Latin AMAs and so on. I guess that's the path that kpop will follow; creating categories for them is not enough, they will create new awards because they can't sell more and with that win more awards than a western artist who sings in English, right? What's next, K-Grammys?
This is obviously a measure to stop kpop, and yes, mainly bts in the market, that's why billboard has changed the criteria for the hot100 several times, that's why youtube also changed the criteria for counting views and not to mention Spotify with the questionable way they filter the streams.
The western market can't control kpop, mainly bts so they are creating ways to stop them but at the same time they want to find the formula of BTS's success and reproduce it, that's why they are creating these awards to, and I quote, 'find the next BTS', which is stupid and extremely offensive.
2024 in particular will be an interesting year in the awards season and will be even more so when bts eventually returns as a group. I say 2024 because next year the members will most likely dominate these awards individually, except for the group awards of course.
That will be fun but at the same time, a nightmare for us because who will we vote for? Who will we send our good wishes to win? Already that dream/nightmare started this year with Hobi competing in some categories with BTS. I guess next year the solution will be to rejoice and celebrate for whoever wins because almost certainly someone from bts will.

Coldplay to return to India with the Music of the Spheres Tour in 2025; announce two January dates at DY Patil Stadium.
Coldplay's amazing Music of the Spheres World Tour is heading to India! Following the sellout success of Coldplay's summer 2024 European stadium events and the announcement of eight extra UK shows, the band takes their Music Of The Spheres World Tour to new heights by announcing two enormous shows in Mumbai, India.
Tumblr media
The Grammy-winning band, known for thrilling performances and timeless tunes, will play two shows in Mumbai on January 18th and 19th, 2025, at the legendary D.Y. Patil Sports Stadium. This announcement is momentous for Indian fans, who have been anticipating Coldplay's return to the nation since their spectacular performance in Mumbai in 2016.
Coldplay's Music Of The Spheres World Tour in India is produced and promoted by BookMyShow Live, BookMyShow's live entertainment experiential business, in collaboration with the tour's global producers, Live Nation. Tickets for Coldplay's Music Of The Spheres World Tour in India will go on sale on BookMyShow on September 22nd, 2024, at 12 Noon (PM) IST, providing all fans the opportunity to reserve their position at one of the decade's most anticipated performances.
Coldplay has also stated that a limited amount of Infinity Tickets will be available for the events on BookMyShow at 12 p.m. IST on Friday, November 22nd, 2024. Infinity Tickets are available for every Coldplay event, making the Music Of The Spheres World Tour affordable to fans. They will cost the local currency equivalent of €20 (Rs. 2000) per ticket and must be purchased in pairs. They are limited to two tickets per customer and must be purchased in pairs (which will be located next to each other). Locations will be disclosed when supporters pick up their tickets in person at the box office on the day of the event, and they may be anywhere in the auditorium, from the floor to the higher levels, side view seats, and anything in between.
Since its launch in March 2022, the Music Of The Spheres World Tour has sold over 10 million tickets throughout Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, making it the most attended tour by a group of all time. In addition to Mumbai, the trip will visit Abu Dhabi, Seoul, and Hong Kong from January to April 2025. The announced dates will continue the band's attempts to reach every part of the world. The tour has also earned high praise from fans and critics alike, with awards including Favourite Touring Artist at the 2022 AMAs and Tour of the Year at the 2023 iHeartRadio Awards.
Coldplay's future album, Moon Music, will be released on October 4th, 2024, and will set new sustainability norms, with each LP manufactured entirely of recycled plastic bottles (nine per record). It is currently available for pre-order on EcoCD, EcoRecord LP, and digital. WE PRAY, featuring Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna, and TINI, is the iTunes chart-topping follow-up to June's double MTV VMA-nominated track feelslikeimfallinginlove, which peaked at number one on both the UK airplay chart and the Official Big Top 40. Chris Martin posted a video in which he discusses the album and its accompanying Notebook Edition, saying, "I think what this album is about is struggling with all the conflict within oneself, within myself, and also all the conflict outside, and figuring out what the best response is." And I believe Moon Music is saying that love may be the finest reaction.
The band recently provided an update on their sustainability measures, stating that, on a show-by-show basis, the current tour has created 59% less CO2e emissions than their previous stadium tour in 2016/17, exceeding their initial objective of a 50% decrease. Over 9 million trees have already been planted around the world (an additional million will be planted by the end of the year).
