122 years a legend
On 6 March 1902, the first Board of Directors of the Madrid Foot Ball Club was elected. In the last year, Real Madrid has lifted the EuroLeague, the Copa del Rey in both football and basketball and the Spanish Super Cups in both sports.
Real Madrid  celebrates 122 years of existence. On 6 March 1902, the first Board of Directors of the Madrid Foot Ball Club was officially elected. This marked the beginning of the greatest club in the world. 122 years later, Real Madrid is a benchmark in world sport with its 25  European Cups  (14 in football and 11 in basketball) and holds the honor of being named by FIFA as the  Best Club of the 20th Century .
Over the last year,  Real Madrid  has lifted five trophies to add to its impressive silverware haul. Among these triumphs is the club's 11th European basketball trophy. This was a spectacular campaign, culminating in  Llull 's unforgettable basket with three seconds left in the final against Olympiacos. In addition to the  EuroLeague , Real Madrid also won the  Copa del Rey  in football (against Osasuna) and the Spanish Super Cup (won this season against Barcelona). In basketball, the recently won 29th Copa del Rey adds the to  Spanish Super Cup  at the start of the season.
Spectacular silverware list
Under the presidency of  Santiago BernabĂ©u  and with legendary players in the squad such as  Di StĂ©fano ,  Gento ,  Puskas ,  Kopa  and  SantamarĂa ,  Real Madrid  claimed the first five  European Cups  in a row between 1956 and 1960. In 1966 came the sixth , with legends such as  Amancio  and  Pirri  in the team. On 11 November 2023, JosĂ© MartĂnez  Pirri  was named honorary president of Real Madrid at the club's Extraordinary General Assembly, succeeding the legendary Galician winger.
After the latest triumphs,  Real Madrid 's unparalleled trophy haul stands as follows: 14  European Cups , 8  Club World Cups , 5  Uefa Super Cups , 2  Uefa Cups , 35  League  titles, 20  Copa del Rey  trophies, 13  Spanish Super Cups , 1  League Cup , 2  Latin Cups , 2  Small Club World Cups  and 1  Iberoamerican Cup .
Basketball and women's football
As for basketball,  Real Madrid 's trophy cabinet boasts 11  European Cups , 36  League  titles, 29  Copa del Rey  trophies, 10  Spanish Super Cups , 5  Intercontinental Cups, 4  European Cup Winners' Cups , 1  Korac Cup , 1  ULEB Cup  and 1  Latin Cup . Since 2020, the women's football team and its youth academy have also become part of the club's history.
Santiago Bernabéu stadium
The stadium continues undergoing a transformation process in order to remain a benchmark for sport. Madrid club president,  Florentino PĂ©rez , highlighted its importance at the last General Assembly: âIt is the pride of all Madridistas. It is part of our lives. And it will be our strongest ally to realize all our dreams. âThe new Santiago BernabĂ©u stadium is going to change the history of  Real Madrid .â In addition,  Real Madrid City  is the finest sports complex in the world and continues to expand 18 years after its inauguration.
Real Madrid Foundation
Real Madrid  celebrates 122 years as a universal club, but also as a club of solidarity. The  Real Madrid Foundation  is present in 100 countries and since its creation 26 years ago, it has helped to benefit the lives of more than 1.5 million people through more than 1,000 projects and some 450 socio-schools on every continent.

N'Golo Kante joins Saudi champions.
NâGOLO KANTE HAS joined Saudi Arabian champions Al Ittihad, the club said in a statement, joining up with French compatriot Karim Benzema. âKante is an Ittihad player now!â the club said on Twitter, while chairman Anmar al-Hailee tweeted: âWelcome to our new tiger Kante,â a reference to the teamâs nickname. The 32-year-old midfielder who joined Chelsea in 216 from Leicester becomes the latest in a line of European stars choosing to ply their trade in the desert kingdom, which is making big-money moves across elite sport. A dynamic and industrious midfielder, Kante won the World Cup with France in 2018. His club career also glitters. He won the Champions League and World Club Cup with Chelsea, as well as back-to-back Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea. Kanteâs contract with the London club was set to expire this month. He has signed a three-year deal with Al Ittihad, the Jeddah-based team said in a statement, though it gave no details of how much Kante will earn. âKanteâs addition to Al-Ittihad is considered one of the most high-profile and impactful signings in the clubâs history,â the statement added. âIt is part of the clubâs efforts to establish itself as a top choice for world-class players in the Saudi Professional League.â Current Ballon dâOr holder Benzema joined Al-Ittihad earlier this month, after 14 seasons with Real Madrid in which he won five Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles and three Copas del Rey. The kingdomâs league had already signed up five-time Ballon dâOr winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in January. His fellow Portuguese international Ruben Neves, currently of Wolves, is reportedly set to join Al Hilal. Argentina legend Lionel Messi, widely considered the greatest player of all time, declined to make a similar move despite a lengthy Saudi courtship, and will instead join Inter Miami in the United States. With its oil riches, Saudi Arabia â a conservative monarchy frequently criticised over its human rights record â has swiftly achieved a prominent role in world sports. In football, the presumed goal is hosting the World Cup, which is intended to lift Saudi Arabiaâs profile and prestige as it tries to diversify its oil-reliant economy by attracting tourists and investors. In the coming years, Saudi Arabia will organise the menâs Asian Cup football, the Olympic-style Asian Games and even the Asian Winter Games in 2029. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), the stateâs sovereign wealth vehicle, holds an 80% stake in Newcastle United, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season. In golf, the PIF has also ruffled feathers. It bankrolls LIV Golf, whose clash with the PGA Tour nearly caused a rupture in the sport. A surprise merger between the rival tours earlier this month settled a legal battle, only a year after LIV Golf launched with several stars who had jumped from the PGA for big-money offers from the upstart series. Benzema will leave Real Madrid
Karim Benzema will leave Real Madrid this summer, the club announced on Sunday, and he is now expected to sign for Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad.
ESPN reported on Thursday that Benzema had decided to leave the LaLiga giants after 14 years, to accept a lucrative offer from a club in Saudi Arabia.
Benzema is Real Madrid's second-highest goal scorer of all time and has won a joint-record 25 trophies with the club -- including five Champions Leagues and four LaLiga titles -- as well as the 2022 Ballon d'Or.
Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
"Real Madrid C.F. and our captain Karim Benzema have agreed to put an end to his brilliant and unforgettable time as a player for our club," Madrid said in a statement. "Real Madrid wants to show its gratitude and all its affection for a player who is already one of our greatest legends.
"Karim Benzema's career at Real Madrid has been an example of behaviour and professionalism, and he has represented the values of our club. Karim Benzema has earned the right to decide his future ⊠Real Madrid is and will always be his home, and we wish him and his entire family all the best in this new phase of his life."
The club said an event would be held at its training ground on Tuesday to pay tribute to Benzema.
ESPN reported earlier in the week that Benzema had been offered a two-year contract worth âŹ400 million to move to Saudi Arabia in January, the same deal as Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr after leaving Manchester United.
The centre-forward had been expected to stay at Madrid for one more season until June 2024 but is opting instead to accept a new challenge.
Benzema joined Madrid from Lyon in 2009 and, after a difficult start, found a place alongside Ronaldo and Gareth Bale as one of the club's most successful forward lines.
He took on the mantle of Madrid's lead goal scorer when Ronaldo left in 2018 and had a career-best season last year, scoring 27 times in LaLiga and 15 times in the Champions League as the club won both trophies. That form was recognised when Benzema was awarded the Ballon d'Or in October.
The Madrid captain has struggled with injuries this season, missing the World Cup, but still scored 18 goals in 23 LaLiga games.
His 25 trophies at the club -- a record shared with Marcelo -- consist of four LaLiga titles, five Champions Leagues, three Copas del Rey, four Spanish Supercopas, four UEFA Super Cups and five FIFA Club World Cups.
The Hard Tackle lists three strikers Real Madrid can sign following the departure of Karim Benzema this summer. The end of an era at Real Madrid is near. In a way, one phase has already culminated, with no player signed before 2010 left in the squad when the transfer window reopens this summer. And when Toni Kroos and Luka Modric exit, the dominant team will have ridden into the sunset. But the latest Real Madrid legend to depart is Karim Benzema, who should soon move to Saudi Arabia.
For a third successive summer transfer window, Real Madrid will lose the club captain after Sergio Ramos and Marceloâs departures in 2021 and 2022, respectively. But Benzemaâs exit has the potential to hurt Los Blancos more as they do not have an alternative to the Frenchman in the first-team squad.
While Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Antonio Rudiger have filled Ramosâs void, Alaba and Ferland Mendy are solid left-back options. But Carlo Ancelotti does not have a single recognised striker in the Real Madrid squad to replace Benzema when he calls it a day in the coming weeks.
The 35-year-old is the most successful player in Real Madridâs history, winning a whopping 25 titles with them. On top of that, the veteran striker is Los Blancosâ second-highest scorer ever. So whoever replaces Benzema at Real Madrid following his departure will have big shoes to fill at the Santiago Bernabeu. With that in mind, The Hard Tackle lists three candidates to succeed the French attacker this summer.
Our list begins with a player at the peak of his powers who has carried his team throughout this season. And with Tottenham Hotspur not playing any European football next season, he might be ripe for the taking. We are, of course, talking about Harry Kane.
The English international has been a goalscoring extraordinaire for Tottenham for nearly a decade. And come rain or shine, he has been a prolific scorer for the North London club. That has never been truer than the 2022/23 season, as he netted 32 goals as Tottenham struggled throughout the season.
Recent reports have suggested that Kane has become the priority target for Real Madrid to replace Benzema. But Los Blancos will compete with Manchester United for the 29-year-oldâs signature in the summer transfer window. That said, they will have an advantage in the chase as Tottenham will not sell to another English club.
But Kane has Alan Shearerâs all-time Premier League record in his sights. So that gives Manchester United a slight advantage, albeit a minor one. But trophy-winning pedigree gives Real Madrid enough ammo to turn Kaneâs head. And there is no doubting his quality and how he is the perfect candidate to fill Benzemaâs void at the Bernabeu.
Our list continues with a player closer to the twilight of his career instead of his peak years. But he will not cost Real Madrid anything, enabling them to focus the budget on other big-money arrivals ahead of an expensive rebuild. We are talking about Roberto Firmino.
The Brazilian international has been a legendary performer for Liverpool for nearly a decade. But his stint at Anfield is ending this summer. And like Benzema at Real Madrid, the 31-year-old is leaving Liverpool as a free agent in July.
But Firmino is 31 years old, four years younger than Benzema. And his style of play resonates closely with what the Frenchman has brought to the table throughout his Real Madrid career. The only drawback is the gulf of output, with the Brazilian nowhere near as prolific as Benzema.
Meanwhile, Firmino is also a target for Barcelona, apart from several Serie A clubs. But widespread reports have suggested that the Merengues are the front-runners to sign the Liverpool veteran. In addition, with Endrick arriving next year, landing a short-term solution like Firmino makes a world of sense.
The last name on our shortlist is a bit of a left-of-centre option, considering there have been no reports linking him with Real Madrid. But the potential this teenage prospect has shown in his young career makes him an enticing prospect. We are talking about Vitor Roque.
The 18-year-old recently made his debut for the Brazilian national side and is the talk of the town in his homeland. And Vitor Roqueâs progress has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
But Barcelona cannot afford his high price tag and might push to secure his services next year. That will give Real Madrid a window of opportunity to launch the offensive and beat the Blaugrana to the teenage sensation. As for what Vitor Roque will bring to the table, he is still rough around the edges.
But there is a physical nature to the 18-year-oldâs game, and he also runs the hard yards off the ball. That trait, in particular, might make him an ideal successor to Benzema at Real Madrid. But with Endrick arriving as the long-term solution next year, signing another teenager might not be the most sensible decision.

Calacus Monthly Hit & Miss âVinicius Jnr & Javier Tebas
Every month we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the last few weeks.
VINICIUS JNR & JAVIER TEBAS
Racism in football has existed for a long time.
The days of the National Front having a presence outside grounds and bananas thrown on the pitch may be behind us, but the experiences of England forward Raheem Sterling, for instance, suggest it still exists in pockets.
Twenty years ago, England players were subjected to racist abuse at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, prompting then-Prime Minister Tony Blair to intervene which was met with hollow statements of concern from Spain which have clearly had little effect.
The likes of Dani Alves, Marcelo, and Samuel Etoâo have all fallen victim to racist abuse in Spain in the past few years, underlining the societal ignorance and endemic problem professional players face in La Liga.
But the latest incident involving Real Madridâs Brazilian star forward Vinicius Junior has highlighted the impotence and ignorance of the football authorities as well.
Just in the past year, Vinicius was racially abused a number of times, including Real's bitter rivals Atletico Madrid singing racist songs in September 2022; abuse at Real Valladolid LINK while he walked past fans after being substituted; an effigy of the Real Madrid winger was hung from a bridge near the club's training ground before a game against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey; and Mallorca fans were filmed allegedly racially abusing the Brazilian during a game against Real.
Late in May, hundreds of Valencia âfansâ sung "Vinicius is a monkey" as the Real Madrid bus arrived at the stadium before the match.
In a heated game, Vinicius was then sent off after calling out some of the âfansâ who were abusing him and clashing with Valencia players in an incident which felt like a watershed moment for football in Spain.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was keen to use his post-match press conference to speak about the treatment his striker endured.
He said: âLa Liga has a problem" with racism. I don't want to talk about football. I want to talk about what happened here. It's more important than a defeat.
âWhat happened here today shouldn't happen. ... There's something bad happening in this league. For me, with these racist incidents, they have to stop the game. I told [the referee] that he should stop the game.
"[Vinicius] is very sad. It's sadness, not anger. The reaction [which saw Vinicius sent off] is quite normal. There are no buts. A stadium made racist insults. Let's see what happens. I'm curious to see. ... Nothing will happen. Usually, nothing happens.â
Who could blame Vinicius for speaking out after the match, using his platform to demand change and highlight the problem.
He tweeted: âIt wasn't the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition thinks it's normal, the Federation does too and the opponents encourage it. I'm so sorry.
âThe championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi today belongs to racists. A beautiful nation, which welcomed me and which I love, but which agreed to export the image of a racist country to the world. I'm sorry for the Spaniards who don't agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists. And unfortunately, for everything that happens each week, I have no defense. I agree. But I am strong and I will go to the end against racists. Even if far from here.â
He added: âEvery round away from home is an unpleasant surprise. And there were many this season. Death wishes, hanged doll, many criminal screams... All registered. But the speech always falls on âisolated casesâ, âa fanâ.
âNo, these are not isolated cases. They are continuous episodes spread across several cities in Spain (and even in a television program). The evidence is there in the video.
âNow I ask: how many of these racists had names and photos exposed on websites? I answer to make it easier: zero. None to tell a sad story or make those fake public apologies. What is missing to criminalize these people? And punish clubs sportingly?
âWhy don't sponsors charge La Liga? Don't televisions bother to broadcast this barbarity every weekend? The problem is very serious and communications no longer work. Not blaming me to justify criminal acts either. You are not football, you are inhuman.â
The statement gave La Liga president Javier Tebas a perfect opportunity to stand in solidarity with one of the Spanish leagueâs finest young players and vow to address the issues facing black players.
When a crisis occurs, itâs usually the reaction rather than the problem itself which sets the tone for how it is viewed.
Tebas, remember, has previous, having criticised Vinicius late in 2022 for his complaints after being subjected to abuse at the Jose Zorrilla stadium in Valladolid as he walked past fans after being substituted.
Instead of being conciliatory, Tebas came out fighting again this time and said: âWe have tried to explain to you what LaLiga is and what it can do in cases of racism, but you have not shown up to either of the two agreed dates that you yourself requested. Before criticising and insulting LaLiga, you need to inform yourself properly VinĂcius.â
Credit to Vinicius, he saw through the deflection and responded in kind: âOnce again, instead of criticising the racists, the president of LaLiga takes to social media to attack me. No matter how much you talk and pretend not to read, it shows your competition in a bad light.
âLook at the responses to your posts and surprise yourself... Ignoring it only makes you the same as the racists. I am not your friend when it comes to racism. I want action and punishment. The hashtag doesnât do it for me.â
Tebas continued with his denials, adding: ââNeither Spain nor LaLiga is racist. It is very unfair to say that. At LaLiga, we do everything we possibly can to report and tackle racism.
âThis season, there have been 9 reports of racist insults (8 of them directed at Vinicius). We always identify the culprits and file a complaint with the disciplinary bodies. It doesnât matter if they are just a few; we are relentless.Â
âWe cannot allow the image of a competition that is, above all, a symbol of unity among all people to be tarnished. More than 200 black players at 42 clubs are shown respect and affection from the fans on every matchday, and racism is extremely rare (9 cases) and something that we are going to eradicate.â
Twice the governing body has run âLa Liga against racismâ but it has had a limited impact and Tebas clearly hasnât grasped quite how much these incidents have already tarnished La Liga âhis denials suggesting that he does not grasp the seriousness of the problem both for players and the Spanish football brand.
Real Madrid made a statement, thanking fans around the world for their support. They said: âAttacks of hatred and racism must be eradicated from our society for good and this is what has been voiced by figures from all walks of life and from different national and international institutions after yesterday's events at the Mestalla stadium.
âThe unfortunate events that have occurred have circled the globe and brought shame on our footballâŠand âŠthe image of our football is seriously damaged and marred in the eyes of the whole world.
âThe referees, instead of acting with decisiveness and applying the regulatory protocols, have chosen in the majority of the cases to abstain and avoid taking the decisions that corresponded to them. Yesterday, the referee and those in charge of the VAR evaded their responsibilities and made unfair decisions based on incomplete images, which were not seen completely, which were biased and which resulted in the direct sending off of our player Vinicius JĂșnior.Â
âUnfortunately, what happened yesterday and the handling of it by the referees and the VAR is not perceived as an isolated incident, but as something that has been happening in many of our matches. The victim who experiences the crime can never be held responsible for the offence.
âFor all these reasons, we are deeply concerned that no action has been taken by the Spanish Football Federation in this period of time, despite the clear and repeated warning signs that we have been denouncing through our club.
âIn view of the seriousness of the current situation and the image that Spanish football is portraying to the world, Real Madrid hopes that there will be immediate and decisive action by all those with responsibility and competence to tackle the evils of racism, xenophobia and hatred. Our club will continue to strive to ensure that the values that have sustained our history continue to serve as a model of coexistence and exemplary behaviour.â
Valencia released a statement after the match which said: âValencia CF wishes to publicly condemn any type of insult, attack or discrimination in soccer.
"The Club, in its commitment to the values of respect and sport, publicly reaffirms its position against physical and verbal violence in stadiums and regrets the events that occurred during the La Liga Matchday 35 game against Real Madrid.
"Although this is an isolated episode, insults to any player from the rival team have no place in football and do not fit in with the values and identity of Valencia CF. The Club is investigating what happened and will take the most severe measures. In the same way, Valencia CF condemns any offense and also requests the utmost respect for our fans.â
In a statement Puma, which has sponsorship deals with both Valencia and LaLiga, said: âAt Puma, we do not tolerate racism, we condemn discrimination in any form and stand in solidarity with Vinicius Junior and the wider football community in condemning events yesterday.â
At a news conference after the weekendâs drama, Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales acknowledged that Spanish football had a problem, at odds with his La Liga counterpart Tebas. Â
âThe first thing is to recognise that we have a problem in our country," Rubiales said.
It is "a serious problem that also stains an entire team, an entire fan base, an entire club, an entire country,â adding that Tebas's comments, were "irresponsible behaviour. Probably Vinicius is more right than we think and we all need to do more about racism.â
The incident prompted diplomatic incidents, with its ministry calling in Spain's ambassador to explain the situation.
"Taking into account the seriousness of the facts and the occurrence of yet another inadmissible episode, the Brazilian government deeply regrets that, until now, effective measures have not been taken to prevent and avoid the repetition of these acts of racism," a statement said.
Brazilâs President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to call on FIFA and LaLiga to act to stop racism taking root in soccer stadiums while deputy Foreign Minister Maria Laura da Rocha said she was amazed by the repeated racist attacks on the player.
"Vinicius Jr received a red card for not enduring all that. The red card should have been given to racism.â
A number of Brazilians then protested outside the Spanish consulate two days later, with Spanish government spokeswoman Isabel Rodriguez saying: "Spain is fighting this behaviour. We condemn it and we are working to eradicate it."
Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer landmark had its lights switched off "as a symbol of the collective fight against racism and in solidarity with the player and all those who suffer prejudice around the world,â according to the Archdiocesan Sanctuary that manages the monument.
Three people have been arrested and it will be interesting to see if criminal charges are made but clearly more needs to be done to protect not only Vinicius but all the black players who face similar abuse in football in Spain and beyond.
Stricter penalties, education programs and awareness campaigns must be implemented to eliminate racial discrimination from Spanish football and foster a more inclusive and tolerant atmosphere.
The Spanish Football Federation, RFEF, saw sense and rescinded the red card Vinicius had received against Valencia but itâs hardly likely to address his concerns about these repeated racist incidents.
Granted, La Liga did make a statement calling for more sanctioning powers, with current rules making it feel âpowerlessâ while Valencia were sanctioned with a partial ground closure and a small fine.
The size of the problem was illustrated, though, by Valenciaâs initial, and somewhat lenient, punishment being cut on appeal from a partial stand closure for five games to three and a significant cut in the already low fine.
In their following match against Real Vallecano, which Vinicius Junior did not feature in due to injury, his team-mates all wore his named #20 shirt while his main sponsor Nike tweeted in solidarity with him.
In the 20th minute of Madridâs 2-1 win, supporters chanted the 22-year-old's name while players from both clubs joined together holding a sign which read "Racists [get] out of football" and fans held a banner displayed in the stands which read: "We are all Vinicius. Enough is enough.â
Too little, too late given the global uproar, Tebas made a series of grovelling apologies, in stark contrast from his previous defensive approach.
He said: âI think that the message, and the intention I had, was not understood by a significant number [of people], especially in Brazil.
âI did not want to attack VinĂcius, but if most people understood it that way, I need to apologise. It was not my intention, I expressed myself badly, at a bad time. But I had no intention of attacking VinĂcius, but rather clarifying a situation, because Vinicius had recorded a video supporting La Ligaâs actions.
âIf I hurt someone, they thought I was racist, itâs far from reality. I feel sorry for what happened, and thatâs why we denounced it. And we didnât just denounce it, we took special actions at his games.
âWe spoke to the clubs, so that they could provide more security, identify fans. La Liga takes care of VinĂcius. And, if they misunderstood what happened I have to apologise.â
The back-tracking apology appeared as if Tebas was trying to save his own reputation rather than coming from a place of genuine understanding.
The fact that a day later he spoke again, voicing his concern for the long-term reputational damage done to La Liga by the weekâs dramas, suggests self interest rather than doing the right thing was front of mind.
Tebas then said that La Liga could reduce racist incidents in six months, which begs the question about why this hadnât happened already.
A week later, Brazilian clubs Cruzeiro and Viniâs former club Flamengo showed their support by sitting down for the first minute of their match, underlining the impact the continual racism in Spain has had on global sport.
The incident at Valencia should serve as a turning point, motivating La Liga and other stakeholders to do more to fight against racism.
Only through collective action can Spanish football truly be a beacon of diversity, where players of all backgrounds can thrive and feel safe on the pitch.
Until the likes of Tebas grasp the full seriousness of the problem, players will continue to see little progress.

Barcelona challenge to prove ultimate test of Real Madrid resurgence
After suffering three consecutive La Liga defeats in October, the third â the 5-1 Clasico loss to Barcelona â proved to be the final straw for Julen Lopetegui, Real have recently started to show signs of life in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era.
The mini resurgence under Lopeteguiâs successor Santiago Solari, which has seen the club climb to within two points of second place Atletico Madrid and reach the Champions League last 16, will face the ultimate test Wednesday as Real travel to the Camp Nou to again face arch-rivals Barca in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal.
Solari, who has overseen a run of seven wins in the last eight games, will be boosted by the news Barca talisman Lionel Messi is unlikely to feature after suffering a thigh injury in Saturdayâs draw against Valencia.
The Argentine is set to undergo further tests ahead of Wednesdayâs match but reports suggested he trained apart from his teammates on Monday.
âFor me there are two predictions: One with Messi, one without Messi,â Marca journalist Juan Castro tells CNN Sport. âWithout Messi I think both teams have the same possibility (of reaching the final).
âBut with Messi, which isnât very likely right now, the clear favorite is Barcelona. Both teams arrive at the game with a good feeling, Solari has recovered a lot, (Karim) Benzema has an unbelievable recent record and Vinicius is the new sensation of Real.â
Ronaldo-less Realâs troubles

Benzemaâs recent resurgence has seen him score six goals in his last four games, with the Frenchman previously having scored just twice in 13 matches.
Itâs that inconsistency in front of goal which has blighted Real this season, as well as a leaky backline, with Benzema being forced to single-handedly shoulder the responsibility of replacing Ronaldoâs 50+ goals every season in Gareth Baleâs continued absence through injury.
The failure to adequately replace the Portuguese star, who joined Juventus in July for a reported $117 million transfer fee, falls squarely at the feet of Real president Florentino Perez, Castro says, despite Lopetegui being made the fall guy.
âRealâs troubles this season havenât only been due to Ronaldoâs absence, but the main reason is his absence,â Castro says. âReal made some mistakes in their preparation for this season but the biggest one was permitting Cristiano to leave â and for that money.
âThe second mistake was not signing a replacement for him, one or two players, and the third one was not creating another figure to supply all these goals in the strikerâs position.
âItâs clear than Benzema is replacing him in the sense that he is scoring more goals than any other player, but this is not enough to replace such big figures that Cristiano posted.â
Though itâs clear Real Madrid have made some improvements on the pitch under Solari, now at least looking more likely than not to win each game they play, Castro remains unconvinced on the impact the Argentine coach has had on the team.
âI donât think itâs a question of names, I think it was a question of time,â Castro explains. âIn the sense that if Loptegui had stayed longer, he probably would have won all these matches as Solari has.
âBut Lopetegui did not have the right amount of time. I donât think it was his fault, I think it was a question of time and not a question of what Solari has brought to that team because if you go into the details, Solari has lost a lot of games as well.
âI will say the big detail from Solariâs side was to bring fresh blood to the team like Vinicius and Sergio Reguilon, which is very important because in his place was Marcelo who was untouchable.
âSolari had the courage to put Reguilon instead of Marcelo, so two big decisions and the third one was to play Lucas more than Gareth Bale. I think those three were big decisions were for Solari.â
Champions League? âWhy not?â
Despite a problematic and largely underwhelming season so far, Castro believes there is a âhigh chanceâ Real can win one or more trophies this season.
While any hope of winning just a second La Liga title in seven years has long since evaporated, Realâs know-how in knockout competitions, particularly the Champions League, mean itâs hard to discount them from potentially securing the double.
âLa Liga is obviously lost,â Castro says. âThe Copa of course, they have only three games ahead to win the title, so of course itâs possible and even more without Messi in the first match.
âAnd the Champions League, why not? I mean, some of the Champions League titles in Real Madridâs history have been in the worse moments than this particular season.
âReal Madrid on the big stage really are superior, they have a superior mentality, they grow a lot, so you can never so no to Real.â
