Awan, 5630 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles (Larchmont), CA 90038
Tumblr media
AWAN finally added a new location and parking is much easier, plus they actually have some seating. The original AWAN in West Hollywood was just a tiny walk-up window. AWAN has some of the most interesting ice cream flavors and collabs. The ice cream is vegan. The base is made with Indonesian coconut cream and coconut water.
The ice cream starts at $6 for a 3 oz kids scoop to $20 for a pint. They also sell bottled beverages, and merch like a $100 AWAN sweatshirt or hoodie or a laser printed stainless spoon.
I was surprised to see 15 flavors to choose from, twice as many as the West Hollywood location.
Flavors of the day:
Balinese Vanilla Bean
Blue Yuzu Lemonade: infused with E3 live blue spirulina and blended with yuzu by Yuzu Co. The ice cream is a beautiful shade of blue. The texture was super dense, smooth, and very creamy. It was topped with a tiny bit of candied lemon peel (or was it yuzu?). It was so good – strong citrus flavor that complemented the coconut cream base, clean-tasting, not too sweet, tangy. Can’t think of anything critical to say about it.
Gaviota Strawberry
Blueberry Lavender
Dayglow Coffee
Gula Jawa
Greenglow Matcha: made with ceremonial grade matcha powder sourced by Dayglow. Strong and delicious matcha flavor, creamy, rich, indulgent. Matcha and coconut are complementary flavors.
Mint Choc Chip
Spiced Apple Oat Crumble
Almond Marzipan
Saffron Pistachio Date Rosewater
Birthday Cake
Kluwek Choc Chip
Chocolate Oreo
The space is interesting. It looks like a dark brown cave with cutouts in the wall where merchandise is displayed.
People who like AWAN probably like Erewhon too – it attracts a similar crowd, image-conscious, exclusive, and interested in quality ingredients.
5 out of 5 stars

Hector Penalosa as captured by Melanie Nissen back in 1977 while performing at Larchmont Hall, Los Angeles, with The Zeros, a band of high school teenagers from Chula Vista, CA, who helped create the first wave of punk rock in Southern California (photo included in the photographer's 2002 "Hard and Fast " book with photos previously published in Slash Magazine as well as some never seen before).
cheunderground.site/ : "The Zeros, often referred to affectionately as the “Mexican Ramones,” cannot only justifiably lay claim to being San Diego’s first “punk” rock group but also can brag about being one of the first punk groups in the US. In a brief but brilliant career highlighted by some classic recordings as well as shows with the Clash and Devo, the Zeros played the first big punk shows in both Los Angeles and in San Diego as early as 1977, when they were still high-school students (
) at a time when greater San Diego was both indifferent to and unimpressed by counterculture movements of any kind. Zeros guitarist and lead vocalist Javier Escovedo hails from a musical family
His brother Alejandro founded San Francisco punk band the Nuns, whose pinnacle was opening for the Sex Pistols in their legendary final concert in 1978 at the Winterland, and, was the family member with the most influence upon his musical tastes. Zeros guitarist Robert Lopez and his cousin, Zeros drummer Baba Chenelle grew up together listening to music and learning to play the guitar and drums, respectively. Baba and Hector met in PE class at Chula Vista Junior High School on April 4, 1975, the Monday after KISS made its first appearance on Burt Sugarman’s “Midnight Special.” “I told this kid I had seen this band on TV with a bunch of makeup and platforms,” Hector remembers. “Baba said, ‘Yeah, man, they’re cool. I have three of their records, so I’ll bring ‘em tomorrow, and you can check ‘em out.’ Baba turned me on to a lot of cool music like Aerosmith, the Modern Lovers and the Velvets, and we became friends,” says Hector. Hector decided to switch to bass so that he could eliminate his competition. He began teaching himself to play bass using three albums as guides: “The New York Dolls”; the Dolls’ “Too Much, Too Soon”; and John Lennon’s “Rock and Roll.” During this time, Javier and Robert, who were students at Chula Vista High School, were playing in a band called the Main Street Brats, covering Standells, Seeds, and Velvet Underground songs, alongside Javier’s originals like “Main Street Brat,” “Siamese Tease,” “Wimp” and “Don’t Push Me Around.” They recruited Baba to be the group’s drummer, and later that year, when they needed a bass player, Hector was invited to audition at Javier’s house in Chula Vista. “I didn’t hear from them for a long time afterwards,” Hector remembers. “I finally asked Baba about it, and he told me that they weren’t sure because they thought if I joined there would be too many Mexicans in the band! They were looking for a blonde guy.” The band had now become the Zeros, a nod to a line by Lester Bangs Javier had read in Creem magazine: “I don’t wanna be a hero, I just wanna be a zero.” Founding members of the band Robert Lopez & Hector Penalosa reunited to form The Zeros ’77 and will be performing on a mini So-Sal tour on 17 Sept. in LA, 21 Sept. in San Diego & 22 Sept. in Long Beach. I went back to Los Angeles this summer and one of the people on top of my list to see was @louobedlam. If you dont know his name then I guess you were never into polaroids. He is in my eyes one the best polaroids photographers there is. I met him the first time in LA in 2008 as I was driving through the states with my friends. We met on Flickr like all photoheads did with an internet presence in the mid 2000s. Not only did he challenge me with being in front of the camera, which he guided me well (and I learned some cool tricks) but he showed me and my friends around too. And I was forever grateful to have met this Los Angeles native (angeleno) and photo legend.
15 years later I go back, and we meet at one of his favorite mexican restaurants for lunch. It was strange to meet again after all this time, but as soon as we started talking, the conversation went to all deep things immediately. Doing photography with integrity, working with film, health, lifestyle choices and life traumas.. all the casual things.
Of course Lou brought his cameras, like he always does. And he managed to capture some photos of me right after some delicious ice cream in Larchmont. I was happy to see the results considering how rare it is for me to see proper photos of myself. It was quite moving to see myself as an older person. I love how your face kind of finds its mold better when you passed into your 30s. I feel very comfortable with it, even though Lou had to do some his tricks to ease me into the lense (that I forget how close it gets). It was inspiring and really cool to see how someones photo practice like Lou`s can be so full of curiosity and playfulness after doing this for decades. A quality person approaching photography on his own terms. Thank you for doing my portraits again Lou. I am very grateful for this!
One is from 2008 by Lou, the others are from now. The last one is a snapshot I did of Lou with my Olympus Mju ii.
See you next time! Hopefully before another 15 years!

A pair of senior partners at the California-based mega-law firm Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith split from the company last month to build their own “compassionate” firm, but internal emails show they used wildly offensive and demeaning language — repeatedly referring to women as “c–ts” and a judge as “sugar t-ts.”
Many of the shocking missives — exchanged between John Barber, 55, and Jeff Ranen, 45, and obtained by The Post from the pair’s former firm — were also racist or anti-LGBTQ.
Before the two labor lawyers suddenly defected in May and took more than 100 Lewis Brisbois employees with them, Barber spent more than 25 years with the firm and Ranen worked there for 20.
Their rationale for leaving was to “build something that’s reflective of our values and our beliefs,” Barber told Above The Law.
“We wanted to lead with empathy, collaboration and compassion, to do it our way and not have any baggage,” Ranen told the Los Angeles Business Journal about the formation of Barber Ranen.
But emails from their time at Lewis Brisbois – which were redacted to remove any specific client information before being viewed by the Post – raise serious questions about the virtue-signaling.
“Kill her by anal penetration,” Barber emailed Ranen in June 2012, reacting to an overtime request from another Lewis Brisbois attorney. On at least three occasions, Ranen described female attorneys as “c–ts.”
In a March 2022 missive, a Los Angeles judge was described as “sugar t-ts.” when Barber joked about how the judge liked to be addressed.
In a November 2012 note, Ranen noted to Barber that another partner has “huge t–s.” That female partner has since decamped to Ranen and Barber’s new firm.
In November 2013, Barber was told by a Lewis Brisbois partner that people were upset during a mediation because of a witness’ frequent use of the N-word.
“She doesn’t want the word n—-r used in her presence. She claims it was used with great liberality, unnecessarily so
and she found it very offensive,” the partner emailed him.
Barber responded snidely. “Got it. N—r. Don’t use.” He spelled the slur out in full.
In October 2012 Barber responded to an email about attending a baby shower with the subject line “N—r” — again spelled out in full.
On May 31, 2020 — just days after the death of George Floyd — Ranen emailed Barber, “F–king looters came within a mile and a half. I can’t even imagine what it was like living in Larchmont [Los Angeles] in 1992 when the savages decimated Koreatown.”
Barber responded: “Just to illustrate my enlightenment . . . As buildings burned within a mile or so that night, we had a party, got wasted, and yelled inappropriate things from the balcony.”
In June 2012, Ranen wrote to Barber, “Gypsy is my new word to describe about half of the minorities in California.”
The partners made frequent use of the word f—-t and other anti-LGBTQ slurs as well.
“Don’t be a f—t,” Ranen responded to a partner testily in April 2015. “What’s this f—t’s problem,” he emailed another colleague in November 2014, asking of a rival attorney.
Barber and Ranen went on a crude back and forth about an unnamed attorney from Mintz, another law-firm, in March 2008. In their exchange they mocked his past service in the Israeli Defense Forces.
“He’s a f-g. Israeli Defense Force hand-to-hand combat instructor? Yawn. I’ll kick his ass,” Barber wrote to Ranen.
Ranan replied, “his bio gave me a stiffy. Does that make me a homo?”
Later on Ranen made fun of Barber for using the expression “oh snap” — noting that he wasn’t sure if “that makes you more akin to a tween or a fudgepacker.”
Critics ripped the two men’s behavior and the firm’s hypocrisy.
“Though they may pretend to have founded their new firm in pursuit of ‘empathy and compassion,’ it is beyond any doubt that they are incapable of doing so,” civil rights activist Al Sharpton told The Post. “I am calling on The State Bar of California to conduct a full review of their character and licenses to practice law. Though these emails alone are beyond sufficient to question Barber and Ranen’s integrity, it is easy to imagine they are just the tip of the iceberg of their intolerance toward communities of color, women and the LGBT community.”
Lewis Brisbois has more than 1,600 attorneys working in offices around the world including one on Water Street in downtown Manhattan.
A Diversity, Equity and Inclusion mission statement on their website touts the firm’s commitment to diversity hires.
In a statement to The Post, the company said they were “shocked” by the behavior of the former partners and promised a probe:
“Following their departure from our firm, a complaint was lodged against John Barber and Jeff Ranen to a member of our management committee. In keeping with our firm’s policies and our responsibility to our personnel, an investigation was undertaken and the firm was shocked to find dozens of emails between John Barber and Jeff Ranen containing highly inappropriate and offensive content.
“The firm is continuing to conduct a broader review of the behavior and conduct of John Barber and Jeff Ranen. We are deeply troubled by their use of prejudiced language and racial and cultural slurs aimed at colleagues, clients, attorneys from other firms, and even Judges,” the company said.
Barber and Ranen did not return multiple messages seeking comment.

he can call a cab/uber if he needs to
I was wondering this as well. He probably does walk further than most of us LA folks do! 😂 Larchmont Village is a very residential area with no hotels and really nothing even close that you would expect a millionaire actor to stay at. So either he is staying in a rental nearby, he walked a ways, or was dropped off. As someone mentioned, Paramount is right there too.
It always feels weird to hear about him in LA even though we know he’s spent a lot of time there and some major moments in his life have happened in LA. He’s such a London boy.
yeah it’s odd when he’s anywhere but london lol. but i think he’s mentioned that he likes LA and that’s it’s fun

Hi!! Just wanted to say again how much i loved the fic i see you’re referring to as “the boat fic” hehe!
Re: our convo in the comments section about this lol, you make a good point about lafd air ops being stationed elsewhere!! Im pretty sure harbor station itself is near san pedro, so that’s what my mind has been going to, but considering tommy’s a pilot, maybe he flies there while on shift?? Not like the show cares about timelines or commutes anyway, so we may never know haha.
Also— i forgot to mention in my comment, i love larchmont village!! It’s so cute and one of my fave stationery shops (shorthand) just opened a location there, so i was really happy to see you mention bricks and scones. 💖 confession: ive walked past that place so many times, but im a creature of habit and I usually get coffee at GGET whenever im in the area. But i will visit soon!!
ahh!! thank you!! yes, the boat fic was the unofficial google docs name lol — it started as one file named ‘something ‘bout a boat’ after a trip to margaritaville, and then a second file named ‘[insert jimmy buffett lyric here]’ and then a third ‘boat fic’ and finally i got frustrated and created file four ‘boat x4’ where everything finally came together 😭😭😭
i was truly going through it with this one, we were beefing for a while until i finally found my momentum.
also! i did just look it up ‘cause i was like maybe i did miss something. and
there definitely are helicopters there? but it’s also 3AM where i am on vacation rn and i am confused about exactly what it is they have going on down there, lol.
when tommy was explaining his work to buck, it sounded a lot like the fleet they have at the van nyus station, but i could be misremembering, or perhaps that’s standard.
(tim if you need someone to work script continuity call me, i’m anal about research and timelines and i have a degree in tv writing 🙏)
and ughh, i miss LA so much (i also miss burger lounge 😱) but it’s sosososo expensive, so, it’s gonna take me a hot minute to get back. i love catching glimpses of the places i do know in the show, last season i was like HEY! THAT’S AN AERIAL SHOT OF MY CVS! 😂
(i also fear i have to say, i never went to bricks and scones, but the reviews said the caramel lattes were really good! so, for that i am a fraud, but larchmont village is very cute and felt midwestern-y enough to feel like home.)
thanks again for reading!! <3

As we contemplate this season of gratitude, we take stock off our blessings and assess how well we have been living up to our core beliefs. We recognize that we truly have much to be grateful for in 2022. It has been a joyful year of growth and constant improvement. We believe that you should do something with joy, or not at all. We focused tremendously on creating spaces and products with love. We believe that beauty is not trivial, and that every product should have a story. We are grateful for our customers for your enthusiastic embrace of new products. We believe that retail is not dead. In June, we opened a new location, in Larchmont Village, Los Angeles (our seventh overall and third in the LA area). In October, we moved our Malibu store to a new permanent location (just a few doors to the left from our previous spot). We are grateful for your support for our creative brick-and-mortar explorations. We believe makers of well-made products deserve to make a fair profit & living wage. This year we expanded our Marrakech atelier. We now have more than a dozen full time craftsmen who make the beautiful products we design. We employ a co-op of women working exclusively for us who make our crochet and embroidered goods. We believe that small businesses are the bedrock of a strong economy. We have big ambitions and a very specific vision for the future. We have resisted outside investors because we don’t want people watering down our dreams or forcing us in a different direction. Our customers make everything possible because you literally make our growth possible. Wait til you see what’s next

In the hotel bar in NYC at the end of September. Multiple spottings in NYC, including w Jeremy Irons I believe in October. Multiple sightings of him in October out in LA, including hiking, at a dog park and at a restaurant. /
11/15 - in LA in a coffee shop - from TW didn’t say if he was alone or not. 11/12 - in LA at Silver Lake dog park with a ‘friend’ no dog - from DM 11/05 - LA at Donna’s. Joe Jonas there also - from DM didn’t say who Seb was dining with. 10/08 - in LA Larchmont carpark - from DM Said he was with AW but not shown in pic 10/1 - in NY with fan - from TW 9/24 - in NY at Sant Ambroeus WV ‘with couple of guys’ - from DM 9/17 - in NY at Mark Bar with 2 blondes - from DM
This gets us until he went to Toronto.
The Jeremy Strong (not Irons) spotting was much earlier than these.
So 1 in LA in October with AW, 3 in LA in November, 2 that could have been with AW since they didn't specify if he was alone or who he was with. I would imagine at Donna's on 11/05 he wasn't eating dinner alone.
If you know of one's I'm missing let me know with as many details you can remember and I will find the dates and where it was from

January is historically the coldest month of the year here in New York. With the onset of chilly weather comes a peak in the cases of seasonal illnesses as people spend more time indoors and the cold, dry air lowers our resistance to viruses. So, if it seems like you and everyone you know is currently sick, was recently sick or is in the process of recuperating from being sick, it’s most likely not your imagination as these types of illnesses are cresting right now.   Getting regular exercise, adequate sleep and consuming a diversity of fresh, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods, such as those found in the farmers market, is fundamental to boosting your immune system and keeping you as healthy as possible throughout the winter months. But, when you’re sick or under the weather, incorporating these traditional, food-based therapies featuring wholesome ingredients can help you feel better and get you back on your feet faster.  A Better BRAT The BRAT diet is an acronym that stands for its four food components -- bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast. This diet used to be recommended for people, especially children, experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea or gastroenteritis. Due to its restrictive nature, the original BRAT diet should be considered a temporary solution and is no longer recommended for extended periods of use beyond a meal or two. Instead, when mild tummy troubles arise, medical professionals now typically suggest consuming a greater variety of bland foods that are gentle on the stomach, along with plenty of fluids and electrolytes. If a bland diet is what the doctor has ordered, congee (Asian rice porridge) makes an excellent choice for an easily digestible, yet nutrient-rich, meal that has been used by the Chinese as a stomach remedy for thousands of years. Congee is made by boiling rice in a large amount of water or stock until the rice softens almost to the melting point, and the broth thickens with creamy rice starch. Adding small quantities of nutritious, stomach-friendly flavorings including minced garlic and ginger, and toppings such as shredded chicken breast will add extra appeal and goodness to your congee without aggravating your digestive system.  Gather all the ingredients you need at the farmers market this weekend to make this deliciously warming and soothing Ginger Chicken Congee recipe from Food and Wine Magazine:
1 cup Great Joy Family Farm long-grain white rice, rinsed
7 cups Yellow Bell Farm chicken stock or homemade vegetable stock
One-inch knob of Jersey Farm Produce ginger, peeled and sliced thin
Optional: 3 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded (Yellow Bell Farm, Roaming Acres)
1/2 teaspoon kosher or sea salt, plus more for seasoning
1/4 teaspoon sesame seed oil
Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
Sliced green onion from the farmstalls, for garnish
Chicken Soup for the Cold While a steaming hot bowl of chicken noodle soup isn’t necessarily a cure for a common cold, it can help relieve its uncomfortable symptoms and defrost you after spending time outside in the “common winter cold”! Not only will the vapor from homemade chicken soup relieve nasal congestion, the broth will rehydrate you, the noodles will provide instant energy-boosting carbs, and its nutritious goodness will feed your entire immune system.
Trisha, our long-time Larchmont Farmers Market Manager, shares her trusted recipe for healing chicken soup that can be made with either rice or noodles, depending on your personal preference:
Ingredients
1 whole chicken (Yellow Bell Farm, Roaming Acres)
3 cloves garlic (Jersey Farm Produce)
2 medium-sized Great Joy Family Farm purple or orange carrots
1 large leek (Jersey Farm Produce)
1 red onion (4E Green Farm)
1 large rib celery plus handful of leafy celery tops (Great Joy Family Farm)
1 bunch of parsley (4E Green Farm)
1 cup Great Joy Family Farm fragrant long grain rice or 1 cup La Trafila fresh pasta
Instructions
Roast chicken, when cooled, remove most of the meat but be sure to leave some on!
Place chicken carcass in a large pot filled with water.
Add garlic cloves (minced or whole), roughly chopped leek, celery, carrots and red onion to pot.
Season with salt, pepper, parsley and start a low simmer for 3-4 hours.
Taste occasionally, add seasoning if needed.
When done cooking, remove chicken carcass and remove its remaining meat.
Add chicken meat back into the soup. Add cooked rice or noodles.
Garnish with fresh parsley.
Serve piping hot!
Of course, consuming a diversity of fresh, healthy and delicious farmers market fare all year-round is the best way to make an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure! But, as the ancient saying goes, 'Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food', so, if need be, we hope these tried-and-true food-based remedies come in handy during peak virus season. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you ready to ward off the ‘cold and colds’ by bundling up well and heading out to the markets this coming weekend.

A mother has been arrested after allegedly abandoning her young child on the side of a California street.
Early Tuesday morning — in the middle of the night at 2.50am — a person walking in Larchmont Village in Central Los Angeles found a 3-year-old girl alone inside a stroller.
The youngster, found on the 100 block of North Larchmont Boulevard, was taken to hospital to be examined. She was found to be in good health.
The police searched the stroller and found an identification card belonging to Targie Alexandre, 24.
After this, police were able to locate the father of the child, but Ms Alexandre’s location was unknown.
"We’ve had a lot of resources devoted to this over the past day, from officers, detectives, we’ve had our bloodhounds out there," said Lt. Brian Churchill of the Los Angeles Police Department. "We’ve had no luck finding the mother so we’re asking for the public’s help right now."
However, Ms Alexandre was arrested on Wednesday night after police were waiting for her at her workplace, police said.
She has been charged with a felony of child endangerment and is being held on $105,000 bail.
Tumblr media
The felony punishment for child endangerment is up to six years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Earlier this year, a Georgia woman was arrested for the 2019 abandonment of her newborn baby after it was found alive in a plastic bag. The mother, Karima Jiwani, was charged with criminal intent to commit murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, aggravated assault and reckless abandonment.

There's something in the air. The girls are running around in summer dresses with their masks off and it makes me so happy. Larchmont Village smells like lilies of the valley. And the bookstore doors are opening. And it's finally happening. Ever since I fell out of love with you, I fell back in love with me. And, boy, does it feel sweet. Like a summer breeze. Ever since I fell out of love with you, I fell back in love with the city. Like thĐ” Paramount sign sparkling, sparkling just for me. You made me tradĐ” my violets for roses. You tried to trade in my new truck for Rollses. Don't forget all of these things that you love are the same things I hate. A simple life, I chose this. You made me trade my violets for roses. You tried to take all the pink off my toes, and God knows the only mistake that a man can make ois tryna make a woman change and trade her violets for roses. Ah la ha, ah ha. Trade her violets for roses. Ah la ha, ah ha.
Violets For Roses by Lana Del Rey
