Even with the conveniences of tuk tuks and the thoroughly affordable rental mopeds we chose to make our way up to Pam Bok Waterfall by foot. The journey was long but made the plunge into the brisk water a rejuvenating and worthwhile experience. It gave us the energy to continue further up the road to the outskirts of a tiny village where we enjoyed lunch and re-hydrated on local beer. It was clear to us this town would be spectacular in wet season when the rice terraces are vibrantly green. We stopped at a farm known for a crack that formed after an earthquake on our way back toward Pai. The special part of the experience was not the Land Split but instead the hospitality of the farmer offering juice and fruit straight from the land. Not sure if we should have trusted the ice but it was too hot not to!

When an earthquake created this land split in the 2000’s, it made farming land unusable. Now the farmer lets people explore it and try a variety of foods grown on the land and just asks for a donation in return. We were greeted by very friendly locals and recommend stopping by here!

Foods: Roselle wine, roselle tea, nuts, banana chips, roselle jam, tamarind, banana with honey, sweet potato with salt.

Pai

Na een dagje luieren en hangmatten en lezen, willen we er met de scooter op uit. Het huren van een scooter neemt ons enorm veel tijd in beslag, want hoewel er ontzettend veel verhuurders zijn, blijken er maar 2 of 3 bedrijfjes echt eerlijk te zijn. Het internet staat vol slechte reviews van toeristen die plots meer moeten betalen voor schade aan de scooter die er al was.

We bezoeken een landsplit, een stuk grond die van de ene dag op de andere is opengebarsten. De eigenaar, een boer, is hierdoor een deel van zijn opbrengst kwijt en verwelkomt nu dus toeristen met organische vruchtensapjes uit zijn eigen tuin.

Iets verderop bezoeken we de Pembok waterval. De inkom bedraagt er 40 baht (iets meer dan een euro) maar het stelt niet veel voor.

De canyon van Pai is een prachtige plek om te genieten van de zonsondergang. Helaas zul je er ook steeds omgeven zijn door toeristen.

Ondertussen krijgen we slecht nieuws vanuit Chiang Mai. Blijkbaar heeft mijn fiets extra schade opgelopen de voorbije maanden. Ik zou deze extra kosten kunnen betalen om deze fiets rijdende te houden, maar in plaats daarvan beslis ik te investeren in de fiets waar ik al bijna een jaar van droom. Door de ervaring die we nu hebben was ik immers op zoek naar mijn ideale reisfiets, een allrounder, die geschikt is voor elke soort ondergrond. Het blijkt een Surly Troll te zijn. En de eigenaar van Triple Cats kan deze fiets bestellen vanuit Bangkok. Eigenlijk bestelt hij enkel het frame en zullen we de meeste onderdelen van mijn fiets gebruiken. Het grote verschil is de maat van het wiel. Ipv 28 inch zal ik nu met 26 inch rijden.

In 768 Kurven - von Chiang Mai nach Pai (Teil 2)

Weiter ging es mit unseren Rollern zur Bamboo Bridge. Die Straße dahin war wirklich der Horror 😅 In Deutschland wäre dieser Weg nicht mal im Navi eingetragen 😆

Uns führte eine ca. 500m lange Brücke durch die wunderschönen Reisfelder - allerdings in der prallen Sonne 🙄☀️

Aber für diese wunderschöne Landschaft nahmen wir das gern in Kauf. Auf der Brücke haben wir eine Gruppe von 4 deutschen Jungs getroffen und uns bisschen mit ihnen unterhalten und noch aus Spaß gesagt „vielleicht sehen wir uns ja noch einmal wieder“ :D (mehr dazu später)

Auf dem Rückweg hatten Moni und Ela ihren ersten Sturz mit dem Roller, aber kein Wunder bei dieser Strecke. Zum Glück ist alles gut gegangen. (Nur der Roller hatten ein paar Schrammen-wofür natürlich gezahlt werde durfte).

Wir hielten noch am Landsplit an. Hier hat sich 2008 & 2011 die Erde durch ein Erdbeben geteilt. War spannend anzusehen und allgemein alles drum herum. Hindurch die Bananen-, und Papayabäume 🍌

Wir wurden auch schon herzlich empfangen und bekamen einige Sachen zum kosten, wie z.B Bananenchips, ungeröstete Erdnüsse, oder Hibiskussaft. Am Ende wurde man gebeten eine Kleinigkeit zu spenden.
