The Commonwealth Scam: Political Games
Commonwealth Games are the heartbeat of every athlete, and Indian athletes have been raising the bar of excellence high with their incredible performance. They have brought fame and pride to the country with their accolades.
Commonwealth games are a buzz as they serve as a gateway for podium performances to Olympics. Every four years, a host country is selected for the Commonwealth Games. In 2010, India was voted the host country. India chose Suresh Kalmadi as the chairperson of the organizing committee.
This person took the competition a bit too seriously, created the biggest scam, and outperformed Harshad Mehta. A scam worth a whopping ₹70,000 crores brought disgrace to the country in every aspect. The reports justified the dialogue of Shatrughan Sinha from Kalicharan, “Aaj ke zamaane mein toh baimaani hi ek aaisa dhanda reh gaya hai ... joh poori imaandari ke saath kiya jaata hai.”
So, let’s learn about the events that took place because of the Commonwealth scam in 2010.
What was the Commonwealth scam?
"Corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion are global problems, not just challenges for developing countries" - Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
The Commonwealth scam is remembered infamously as one of the biggest scams. The Commonwealth scam involved astounding pilferage of ₹70,000 crores, Suresh Kalmadi's mastermind. The organizing committee led by Suresh Kalmadi made extraordinary plans initially, but all the promises turned out into a national embarrassment.
As grandiose and well-thought-out as the scam was, the games' set-up was menial and way below par. How? The companies that were chosen to organise the event over-quoted prices but supplied poor-quality goods. These companies were preferred against those who provided the best prices for better quality equipment. The Committee of Inquiries signalled that Kalmadi and all his aid workers were involved and arrested.
Did You Know
India bagged 101 medals in the Commonwealth games 2010, including 38 gold medals.
What happened in the Commonwealth scam?
The commonwealth scam was a deep well of conspiracies and corruption. Many irregularities were found according to many reports, including one by Housing and Land Rights Networks (HLRN) and investigations by the CBI. These irregularities were as follows:
1. Overall Security and Infrastructure
The Government of India, 2010, conveyed that they spent lots of money on enhancing the infrastructure, security, and development of 20 cities for the Commonwealth Games. This expenditure was planned to make the cities attractive as tourist destinations, but the estimate was never revealed.
The workers appointed for the infrastructure were exploited with ruthless working hours, unjust pay cuts, and bad working conditions. An incident of a footbridge collapsing 12 days before the event happened at the site of the games. This mishap drew a lot of attention and questioned the safety of the spectators and athletes.
The initial estimated sports infrastructure was marked as ₹1,900 crores, which increased to ₹11,000 crores. Compared to the amount, the construction of various venues was done poorly. The vinyl flooring at the weightlifting site was peeling off, while the false ceiling at the table tennis facility collapsed.
Lalit Bhanot, the Secretary General of the Organising Committee (OC), said to the athletes, "Some false ceiling has fallen, which means nothing. These things happen even at your home."
In addition, the OC failed to meet the targetted deadline of 1 August for enhancing and constructing specific venues such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium's swimming pools, fields, and stadium tracks. Many swimmers fell ill and complained about the water's quality. Many more issues sprung up as the games continued. Calacus Weekly Hit & Miss – Jordan Henderson & Narinder Batra
Every Monday we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the previous week.
HIT – JORDAN HENDERSON
Communicating with fans is fundamental for any sports club or player, particularly during these lockdown times where engagement is even more challenging
But the increase in online social media abuse has also become even more prevalent in recent months, with Thierry Henry declaring recently that he is deleting his accounts completely until platforms do more to combat the trolls.
Manchester United quartet Anthony Martial, Axel Tuanzebe, Marcus Rashford and Fred and Chelsea’s Reece James have also been targeted by racist social media abuse this season.
There have been reports that the Premier League and Football League might consider a collective social media blackout while Swansea City announced a week-long social media boycott last week on all platforms in response to abuse and discrimination.
The blackout includes all players, staff and the club's official accounts and comes after Jamal Lowe, Ben Cabango and Yan Dhanda have suffered racial abused in the past two months.
A Swans statement read: “As a football club, we have seen several of our players subjected to abhorrent abuse in the past seven weeks alone, and we feel it is right to take a stand against behaviour that is a blight on our sport, and society at large.
“We also want to stand with players from other clubs who have had to endure vile discrimination on social media platforms. As a club we are also acutely aware of how social media can impact on the mental health of players and staff, and we hope our strong stance will highlight the wider effects of abuse.”
Championship rivals Birmingham City soon followed Swansea’s lead and said: “The Club stands in solidarity with Swansea City Football Club…with this fight going beyond sporting rivalries and one that must be tackled in unison.
“Regardless of who such abhorrent abuse on social media is directed towards, Blues do not believe this should determine who speaks out against it and that making this stance together is paramount to ridding the game and society of this evil. This goes far beyond pulling together as Blues, but as football and society."
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has taken things a step further, giving control of his social media channels over to an anti-cyberbullying charity due to continuing online racist abuse.
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Naby Keita were subjected to racist abuse on social media following the Reds' 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.
That prompted Henderson to work with the Cybersmile Foundation, which aims to provide support for victims of cyberbullying and promote a positive use of the internet.
Taking to Twitter, Henderson said: “Online abuse has got to stop. Recently I’ve been thinking about what I can do, as an individual, to try and make a difference. I've seen friends, team-mates, other players within football and in wider society be on the receiving end of horrendous online abuse which is now out of control.
“The platforms should be doing more but as a society we need to be kinder to each other – that’s where it starts and stops. I have seriously considered deleting my social media accounts in the last few weeks but instead I want to use my platforms to try and drive positive change – people shouldn't have to boycott platforms or deactivate accounts just to avoid abuse.
“So I'm handing all my social media accounts over to @CybersmileHQ who I have partnered with to raise awareness of the impact that cyberbullying and online abuse can have on people. They'll be sharing stories of people affected as well as resources for education, reporting and how to get help if you or someone you know is struggling. Things have got to change. Jordan.
He added: “I partnered with Cybersmile for the People Not Profiles campaign because the problem of online abuse is continuing to destroy lives every day. It has been great working with Cybersmile to address such an important issue and it is my hope that this campaign raises awareness of how seriously online abuse can affect people and also lets people know there is help and support available to them.”
Henderson should be applauded for taking a proactive approach to addressing the issue of online abuse, especially with social media platforms seemingly impotent at policing the trolling that occurs on their channels.
Rather than simply complain or boycott them, Henderson is using his huge profile to highlight the importance of good behaviour online and the devastating impact has on those who are abused.
A Cybersmile statement added: “The campaign will run for a number of weeks and will be featured on The Cybersmile Foundation and Jordan Henderson’s Instagram, Facebook and Twitter - all driving content to raise awareness of the severity of the issue while providing support and education options to millions of people online.”
Dan Raisbeck, co-founder of the Cybersmile Foundation, added: “Everybody at Cybersmile is honoured to be working alongside Jordan on this important campaign, designed to serve as a reminder that behind social media profiles there are real people with real feelings.
“By effectively utilizing Jordan's powerful platform, we will be reaching millions of people with behaviour-changing insights into the effects that cyberbullying and online abuse has on people's lives, as well as offering potentially life-saving access to crucial advice and support services.”
Let’s hope Henderson’s support for the campaign highlights the realities of trolling and prompts some if not all the keyboard warriors to think twice before targeting those that they abuse.
MISS – INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT NARINDER BATRA
Lalit Bhanot has been one of the powerful figures in Indian sports throughout the 21st Century, but he has never been far from controversy.
A former secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Bhanot previously spent 11 months in jail on corruption charges linked to the New Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.
In May 2020, further questions were raised over Bhanot’s involvement in the IOA after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had insisted previously that officials facing charges should not be involved in the administration of the organisation.
Despite Bhanot offering his resignation in October, IOA President Narinder Batra did not accept the resignation, vowing that Bhanot will continue to serve on IOA commissions so long as he continues in his role as President.
“If anybody has a problem thank you very much,” Batra said, according to the New Indian Express. “I don’t care, he is my chairman. As simple as that. For me he is very important.
“If somebody does not like his face, they are welcome to go and bang their head. As long as I am President, he will continue. If I get elected in November, he will remain as chairman.”
Last month, the IOA Ethics Commission ruled that Bhanot will cease to be a member of any committee of the Olympic body with immediate effect as an interim measure pending a final adjudication on charges of impropriety in his appointments.
The Commission also sought details from Bhanot on his positions in the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
The IOA website, however, continues to list Bhanot as member of several committees including Chairman of the Tokyo Olympics Preparations Committee.
Given the ruling from the IOA Ethics Commission, Batra’s comments are entirely misplaced and raise further questions about his ability to run the organisation.
Suggesting that anyone unhappy with Bhanot should go and “bang their head” was clumsy language at best and incites unnecessary thoughts of violence and regardless of his views on the decision of the Ethics Commission, the way he communicated his thoughts fell short of what you’d expect from a President of a National Federation.
Rather than simply disregarding Bhanot’s resignation and calling out any critics, Batra should have explained why he felt Bhanot remained the right person for the job.
It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the coming months, particularly in the build up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and whether the decision will be taken out of Batra’s hands.

Sumariwalla set to become AFI chief for third term, Anju Bobby George to be senior VP | More sports News
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Incumbent Adille Sumariwalla is set to be elected unopposed as Athletics Federation of India president for his third term while former long jumper Anju Bobby George will be made senior vice-president in the polls of the national governing body on October 31. Sumariwalla and Anju were the only candidates who filed their nomination papers for their respective posts till the deadline of 4pm Wednesday. Returning officer Vijayalakshmy K Gupta issued the list of validly nominated candidates after the deadline. Sandeep Mehta and Ravinder Chaudhry have filed their nominations for the lone post of secretary. Mehta has also filed nominations for the lone post of senior joint secretary and it may be that he withdraws from contesting the secretary’s post. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is 6pm on Friday. Madhukant Pathak will be elected unopposed as treasurer while six candidates have filed nominations for five posts of joint secretary. Only eight candidates filed nominations for as many executive committee members. AFI Planning Committee head Lalit Bhanot is one of them. He was also an executive committee member last term. For Anju, the lone Indian to win a medal in the World Championships (a bronze in 2003), it will be her highest post in the AFI Executive Committee. She was in the executive committee of last term by virtue of being a member of the Athletes’ Commission. For Sumariwalla, the coming four year term (2020-2024) will be his last as AFI president as the National Sports Code of 2011 allows only three continuous terms as head of a national sports federation. He was first elected as AFI chief in 2012. The AFI polls will be held “in person” during its annual General Body Meeting at a plush hotel in Gurugram to elect one president, one senior vice-president, five vice-presidents, one secretary, one senior joint secretary, five joint secretaries, one treasurer and eight executive committee members. The AFI constitution mandates at least a woman among vice-presidents, joint secretaries and executive committee members. The elections were due to be held in April but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The AFI had in May deferred its elections and extended the term of its office bearers during a Special General Meeting, held online. At that time, the federation had said that elections can only be held “in person” and not online.

AFI Planning Committee asks athletes to take advantage of Olympic postponement - Times of India
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Monday urged athletes to stay mentally strong amid the nationwide lockdown and take advantage of the extra time they have got to prepare for the postponed Tokyo Olympics.
The Olympics, originally scheduled for July-August, has been postponed to next year in the wake of the fast-spreading COVID-19 pandemic.
AFI’s Planning Committee conveyed its message to athletes during an online meeting with the national campers, coaches and support staff.
As most of the elite athletes including the likes of javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, quarter-miler Hima Das, shot putter Tajinder Toor, race walker KT Irfan and India’s men 4x400m men and women relay team members are currently training indoors in their rooms at various national camps during lockdown.
The Planning Committee encouraged athletes to maintain their physical fitness and strictly follow their diet charts.
AFI President, Adille J Sumariwalla, told athletes, “We are really glad that all of you are fit and safe at the camps in Patiala, Bengaluru and Ooty. With Olympics 2020 being postponed to 2021 and World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in 2022, it will be a tough challenge for you all.
“We have to use this opportunity of delay to our advantage and you have to be mentally prepared for these challenges from today itself. With the changed scenario and back to back major events planned for next two years, we will have to adapt to the single phase of competition period.”
Sumariwalla said AFI is looking to resume sporting activities from September.
“We will try to resume our domestic competitions from September-October 2020 and for next year from March-April 2021. With the postponement of Olympics, we hope that now many young athletes also stand a chance to qualify for the Olympics 2021 while seniors need to focus on their existing fitness to grab this opportunity.
“At this stage we cannot say anything about any foreign exposure camp later in the year, but for sure, we will plan for international competitions-cum-training camps for 2021. We are monitoring the situation at the camps and when the situation allows, you will be allowed to train outside after the consultation with SAI,” he said.
The online meeting was attended by more than 50 athletes and around 30 members of the coaching team along with AFI Planning Committee Chairman Lalit K Bhanot, National Chief Coach Bahadur Singh, Deputy Chief Coach Radhakrishnan Nair and AFI High Performance Director Volker Hermann.

IOA takes stock of situation
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) preparations committee, headed by Lalit Bhanot, held a meeting with NSF representatives on Wednesday to take stock of the situation in light of the COVID-19 and decide the way forward towards Tokyo 2021.
While there was unanimity that the younger athletes who have already qualified for the Olympics would benefit from the delay by gaining experience, there…

NEW DELHI: World Athletics President Sebastian Coe on Thursday advised the track and field fraternity to work hard to attract younger audience to the sport. Opening an online seminar, Coe underlined the importance of holding the attention of audience in a complex entertainment landscape. He pointed out that one of the important elements of an early research, commissioned by World Athletics, was the finding that 75 per cent of fans wanted a change in the event presentation in stadiums, television and on other screens that they engage. “It made me realise that it’s probably more important now than ever to deliver young fans quality information in a consumable way, whether at the side of grass track or they’re sitting in an international stadium. “The speed with which you can convey that information and bring humour occasionally are pieces of great human interactivity,” he said. “If the experiences we provide them is anything less that they expect, they move on very quickly. Not just to another sport but also out of sport, to music, films and other things,” he added. He noted that consumption practices of young people “have become a-la carte”. “The entertainment landscape is so complicated that everybody is fighting for a few minutes of their attention,” said the double Olympic gold medallist in 1500m. Coe, who was recently elected as a member of International Olympic Committee, said the sport was not just about the God-given talents of the athletes. “It is crucially about the way that the crowd is brought into the tent, to the theatre and actually, on most occasions, be a part of and even maybe the central part of that theatre. That’s why today’s session (of the seminar) is so important,” he said. Athletics Federation of India President Adille Sumariwalla said the seminar for the ‘announcers and event presentation managers in the modern era’ was conceived to make athletics attractive to its fans at all levels. “AFI has been in the forefront to knowledge upgradation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This seminar is in keeping with our mission to give the fans a great experience at all levels, from National to district meets,” he said. The seminar, organised by the AFI in partnership with the South Asian Athletics Federation, the Oceania Athletics Association and the European Athletics, was participated by more than 1500 announcers and event presenters from 42 countries. SAAF President Lalit Bhanot said a correct event presentation was crucial in a commercial world. “The connect with all spectators has to be established right from the beginning and our attempt is to ensure that all our meets are conducted with this in mind,” he said. President of European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov and Oceania Athletics Association chief Robin Sapong Eugenio were also present.

CHANDIGARH: Retiring national chief athletics coach Bahadur Singh on Saturday lamented at the lack of a proper indoor training facility while also urging the administrators of the sport to focus more on the grassroot level. Speaking at an emotional farewell function organised by the Athletics Federation of India through a video conference, the 74-year-old Singh said, “We spend a lot of money in sending our athletes overseas when the climate at home does not permit training. India badly needs an indoor facility.” “But if our schools let our children play sports and give them the facilities, India can be a world power,” he added. Crediting the achievements of the Indian athletics fraternity over the past 25 years to collective efforts, Singh said, “If India has risen to be a leading nation in Asian athletics, it is not because of one man but because of team-work by athletes, coaches, the Athletics Federation of India, the Sports Authority of India and the sports ministry.” Also present on the occasion was sports minister Kiren Rijiju, who recalled that he had been motivated by Singh’s feat to be a shot putter himself in his school days. “Bahadur Singh has been an inspirational personality over five decades and rendered great service with his commitment, dedication and discipline,” he said. SAI Director General Sandip Pradhan also thanked Singh for his contribution to Indian athletics. Athletics legends Sriram Singh, PT Usha and Anju Bobby George shared their memories of the athlete-turned-coach. The 1976 Olympic Games 800m finalist, Sriram Singh recalled they had both started their Asian Games careers in Tehran in 1974 and completed the NIS coaching diploma in 1980. “Bahadur Singh had contributed immensely to the growth of Indian athletics,” he said. Usha, fourth in the 1984 Olympic Games 400m hurdles, recalled that she was a teenager when she travelled with Singh to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. “He was already a renowned athlete and inspired everyone with his hard work and dedication to training. As chief coach, he would motivate the coaches to do their best,” Usha said. Long jumper Anju Bobby George remembered her debut in the Commonwealth Games in 2002 when she was lying sixth with only one jump left. “We were trying to communicate in sign language but unable to understand one another, but he folded his hands in prayer and asked me to jump. I secured bronze,” she said. AFI president Adille Sumariwalla, who welcomed the online gathering, said he would remember Singh as the epitome of sportsmanship and for his will to fight to win. “He took over as chief coach when India got only three athletics medals in the 1994 Asian Games and steered the team to 20 medals in 2018,” he said. AFI Planning Committee chairman Lalit Bhanot who was AFI secretary general when Singh was made coach of the junior team in 1991 and of the senior team in 1994, spoke highly of Singh’s unmatched vision and honesty. “He would always put others’ interest before his own and dedicated his entire life to athletics,” he said.

Athletics | AFI targets September return
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is officially targeting a return to action by September even as the tenure of its office-bearers was extended till physical elections could be held when situation becomes conducive.
The AFI held its Special General Meeting via videoconferencing on Saturday to take stock of the road ahead in terms of planning and preparation of events and athletes. Prospective calendar
High Performance Director Volker Hermann, Chief Coach Bahadur Singh and Deputy Chief Coach Radhakrishnan Nair shared a prospective competition calendar, assuming resumption of domestic events in September.
“We had planned for competition in two phases but have had to draw up in one, delayed phase,” AFI Planning Committee chairman Lalit Bhanot said. IOA president Narinder Batra, attending the meeting, assured the AFI of support in securing contract extensions for overseas coaches and support staff.
The meeting also saw tributes paid to legendary coach Joginder Singh Saini, who passed away on March 1, and Sumariwalla announcing an online pre-Level 1 coaching module to provide proper guidance to parents and coaches of young athletes and avoid over-training and burnout.

AFI plans to revive activities by September
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is targeting a return to action by September this year, hopeful that the situation would improve enough by then to conduct domestic competitions.
“We will try to resume our domestic competitions from September-October 2020 and for next year from March-April 2021. With the postponement of the Olympics, we hope many young athletes stand a chance to qualify while seniors need to focus on fitness.
“At this stage we cannot say anything about foreign competitions-cum-exposure camps in 2020. Athletes would also be allowed to train outside (SAI Centres) after consultations once the situation improves,” AFI president Adille Sumariwala said after an online interaction with athletes, coaches and support staff on Monday.
The session was attended by more than 50 athletes and around 30 officials along with Planning Committee chairman Lalit Bhanot, chief coach Bahadur Singh, Deputy Chief Bahadur Singh High Performance Director Volker Hermann.
Most of the elite athletes including javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh, quarter-miler Hima Das, shot putter Tajinder Toor, race walker K.T. Irfan and the 4x400m relay teams are currently confined to their rooms in national camps at various SAI Centres across the country.
