Opal! Our mineral contestant that is actually a mineraloid because it is amorphous silica (as opposed to quartz, which is silica but with a crystalline structure). Some opal (and the opal most people like) is the opal with all the shiny colorful bits, but opal does not necessarily have to have that. Included in this broad definition of opal is all varieties of opals, including opalized fossils!

LAKE SUPERIOR AGATE KEEPS WINNING!! I know opal is popular, but I am excited to see this showdown because I now really believe in Lake Superior agate. I think they could take opal down. If everyone continues to support it and its bright red and white bands. For those wanting actual information, Lake Superior agate is red because of iron STAINING. While amethyst is purple because iron is in the chemical structure, Lake Superior agate is red because it is actually stained from iron (which, y’know, is red when it rusts).

I have not had the chance to visit Isle Royale National Park but I have wanted to visit for many many many years. I lied, i did have the opportunity and as i readied to go i broke a toe.... and that kinda screwed me from going since the only way of getting around on the islands is walking and boating.

But I have heard nothing but good things from folks who have visited. And Lake Superior is one of my favorite bodies of water. And would go back to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in a heart beat if the opportunity showed itself. So go visit if you get the chance. And brush up on your rock knowledge before you go. There are some beautiful rocks on those shores including Lake Superior Agates (am the proud owner of a few), native copper and datolite.

Also if you go, make sure you also visit Keweenaw National Historic Park just a few miles up from the boat dock. It is a fantastic, little known, historic site in the NPS that talks about the copper industry in the US and the people it drew to the country from ALLLL over the world. At one point in the 19th century and early 20th century Calumet, MI was just as ethically diverse as NYC at the time.

No one else talks about it but the guy who copyrighted the term "yooperlite" is the shittiest guy ever and hes at EVERY SINGLE gem and mineral show in the great lakes area. And not to fucking mention he ended up JACKING UP the prices on Lake Superior sodalite and he ripped off the patent on another guys UV light! He's selling worse blacklights for WAY more than most of the other people on the market. Like absolute shit guy. If you want to sell LAKE SUPERIOR SODALITE you can't sell it as YOOPERLITE because the name is copywritten. ALSO LIKE FUCK HIM FOR REAL!!!

ordered meself a new pair of glasses since I lost my main pair at the forest preserve months ago when i switched to my sunglasses (lol) and my backup pair has a screw missing. leaning more heavily into the circle direction i was already pushing and got a tortoise frame with copper-ish gold for the metal bits
