THE FIVE GREAT HOUSES OF ADILISTAN.

an introduction to the five major houses that make up the world of my wip.

HOUSE LAHARI.

House Lahari, the first house of the Noon dynasty, held the ports. Mounted in a castle that sat atop a lone hill overlooking Sand Bay, House Lahari manned all ships and overlooked all trade that concerned their sacred land.

Descended from Karamat Lahari, a sailor who was said to have won the Goddess Phauzia’s favour by presenting her with a lithe snake that sung and danced and coiled around her arm like a bracelet, House Lahari was the first of the Fated Five upon whom befell tragedy.

HOUSE PIRZADA.

House Pirzada, the second house of the Noon dynasty, overlooked infrastructure. Great temples with open roofs were built for the Goddess Phauzia, lest her rays miss all who came seeking her counsel. The Pirzadas were a simple people, more devout than most, and quiet in a way that left one wondering indeed if they were more foe than friend.

Their descendent, Sefa Pirzada, was said to have been a close companion of Phauzia, and one of her most trusted advisors and friends. It was a bond her blood refused to forgo.

HOUSE LAAL.

House Laal, the third house, were masters of swordsmanship. From the forging of steel to its expert wielding, House Laal dominated all. They sired the greatest warriors the Sol had ever known, including Ramineh Laal the Ruthless, their descendant who ensured a name for all that would share her blood.

Many whispered that she had been the one to aid Phauzia in the carving of the throne, that it had been Laal hands that welded the seat that now housed foreign and—some would argue—unworthy inhabitants.

HOUSE JAFARI.

House Jafari, the fourth, knew more of matters of expenditure than gold itself. Calculated and sharp, they sat the council of every Noon King and Queen to come into power as the doyen of funds. They worked closely with every house to ensure funds were equally distributed, for the betterment of the realm.

Yanik Jafari had been witty enough to yield the Goddess’ interests. It was his knowledge and quick calculations that kept them there, however, and no more quickly was she impressed by him than she had him placed at the head of her own council so that all matters of outlay pass to him.

HOUSE NOON.

Lastly, House Noon, the fifth and final house of the Noon dynasty, and the house that brought about its shining glory. House Noon yielded the greatest power of them all, one that irrefutably trumped all others: the blood of Phauzia. For while the Fated Five possessed the blessing of the Goddess, her very being flowed in House Noon’s veins.

The work of Phauzia’s carving rested beneath their fingertips, their bones, and its power was conclusive. Their blood was worthy; picked by the shining Phauzia herself when she fell in love with a comely village man by the name of Mumtaz Noon. Their love was one that singers and merchants alike prattled of on the shores of Sand Bay to ensure commerce. A man with no inheritance to ensure the great Phauzia even a semblance of luxury nor comfort, Mumtaz had only a slight ring, thin as wisps and dispensable for the likes of the Goddess. But she loved him for his character, not his glory, and they lived a life of prosperous rule, during which they sired multiple children and grandchildren to inherit the kingdom after them.

It was said that when a Noon sat atop the throne it glowed with sunbeams sent from the sky lands above, a boon from the long-departed Phauzia and her consort Mumtaz as a mark of their favour.

But the concept of pure birthright seemed to dwindle as more moons arrived and fled since the Golden Age. Illegitimacy festered in the swells of Adilistan and the houses grew restless. Gone were the days of prideful founders and come were the days of unsatisfied descendants who itched and yearned for more. The validity of the Goddess and mortal’s union was a greatly disputed matter, and factions rose that rejected the Faith, and the throne with it.

A Noon upon the throne was no longer a sign of stability for the realm, rather a mockery of those who kept it alight with no reward. Crimson rivulets trickled into Adilistan, carrying with them whispers of illegitimacy and caucuses that disputed behind closed doors the claims and rights of House Noon.

Zayn Laal: husband to Princess Fatimah Noon. Made King after her and the King’s deaths.

On The True Meaning Of Kali Standing Above Shiva – The ‘Dark’ Devi Uber Alles

“Kali is standing over Shiva with Tongue out in contrition and embarrassment. He is underfoot, having been trampled upon – as Her Fury had burned out of all control and stood the risk of initiating the unravelling of the Worlds Entire. Thus necessitating Her Husband, Mahadev, throwing Himself down into Her Path in order to sacrifice Himself to shock Her out of it and bring things to a safe conclusion. And thus the aforementioned expression of acknowledgement of an error and having been shamed via lapse of self-control.”

Except here’s the thing. That’s not actually how the story goes. At all.

Instead, what I’ve just relayed in the passage above is a kind of post-facto ‘reading into’ the overt symbolism of the iconography by persons who were evidently not acquainted with what these elements are actually intended to mean. Or who wanted to simply reinforce particular narratives – whether sexist or ‘merely’ sectarian – accordingly. Probably both.

Now, where there is a substantive point of agreement between the ‘pop-(mis-)perception’ and the authentic understanding is when it comes to Shiva. Namely, how He appears to be lying there like a corpse (‘Shava’).

The point of difference comes in terms of how He got there in the first place.

You’ve heard the rendition above wherein Kali and Her Insurmountable Rage effectively ‘kill’ Him.

Except in reality, it’s the opposite.

Kali is standing above Shiva as Shava because She’s bringing Him to Life.

Because, after all, without Her – well, the Purusha (‘Man’, ‘Cosmic Man’ – ‘Universe’) is not animate, is simply inanimate ‘matter’ lacking the investiture of Shakti that brings the universe to life.

This is the similar notion to that which is so eloquently expressed by Adi Shankara in his well-known Saundarya Lahari [‘The Waves of Beauty’] –

“sivah saktya yukto yadi bhavati saktah prabhavitum

na cedevam devo na khalu kusalah spanditumapi”

Which, to render word-by-word:

“Shiva with Shakti joined (Yukta), if (Yadi) comes to be (Bhavati) empowered / endowed with (Sakta) is able to influence / manifest / effect (Prabhavitum)

If Without (Na Cet), the God (Devo) is indeed (Khalu) not capable / competent (Kusala) even (Api) to ‘pulsate’ / ‘move’ / ‘engage in mental activity’ (Spanditum) .”

Or, in rather more conventional English:

“If Shiva is joined with His Shakti, then He becomes empowered to Manifest and Impel the Universe

But without Her, Even the Mighty God is indeed unable to even Move nor Mentally Conceive”

This also helps to explain, in a roundabout way, just why it is Kali Who is depicted in such a fashion.

The simple answer is to be found in Her Divine Complexion. It is the Night Before (and Between) Worlds. The Black Infinity.

Exactly as one should expect in the ‘poised’ time imminently afore the Universe at large should spring into being – and into Life.

To quote from one of my earlier pieces in this particular direction:

“Hence, that idea of the ‘corpse’ ‘stirring’ to life – and we would note the PIE *h₃er- – to ‘rise up’, to ‘stir up’, and yes, ‘to fight’; that has a likely expression also in the ‘Erinyes’ of ‘Demeter Erinyes’, or various other epithets and theonymics quite salient to our purpose here.

If we are to conceptualize the Universe as a ‘Body’ – then without Her, it is a Body not in motion. It is static, it is still, it is suspended and stopped. Indeed, we may go back steps further and note that it is a body that is not even extant to *be* in such a frame.

If we are to conceptualize the Universe and its unfurling as a Dream, a Vision – the ‘mental activity’ we had spoken upon earlier – then without Her, even Lord Shiva is unable to Dream, to experience and then actively bring to immanentize, His Vision.

Or, we may say – Her Dream, Her Vision – the one that She had Inspired Him to express !

It is a good thing, then, that She never truly leaves Him – not for too long, anyway.

His Shakti is always there – it is just simply a matter of divining how to reach out to Her again.”

So, given that we know Kali does not, in fact, bring about the corpse-like status of Her Husband (at that point in the cosmology and mythic cycle, at any rate), but rather is fulsomely engaged in preparing to bring about the exact opposite …

… what to make of the situation as to Her Outstretched Tongue? It cannot be a gesture of contrition, after all – She has nothing to be contrite for.

Well, for that we would suggest turning back to the major mythic episode in which Her Protruding Tongue is saliently mentioned: the Slaying of Raktabija.

There, Devi’s Tongue surges forth in order to be able to dart about the battlefield – intercepting each and every drop of blood of the demon Raktabija [‘Blood-Seed’] so as to disrupt the effect of a boon he had been given … that ensured another Raktabija should spawn every time a drop of his blood hit the ground.

The effective purport of meaning to this can be reasonably easily observed:

Namely – that Her Tongue ‘gets in everywhere’ (It has to – that was why this was deployed ‘gainst Raktabija, after all) and is unstoppable.

This, too, can be interpreted in multiple not-necessarily-exclusive ways. Whether in terms of being able to drink blood & receive offering in such a broad and pervasive, unrestricted fashion; or being, as we say, unstoppable and unable to be warded against and kept at bay (Death, after all, as with the onrushing maw of Nightfall – an Inevitability); or, at the risk of being somewhat ‘heterodox’ myself – noting that the Tongue is a ‘bridge’ , a ‘conduit’ of its own : one which does not simply go ‘up’ in the manner of consuming, but also radiates back out in the sense of communing.

It is fitting, we might suggest, that the same Tongue which is so all-pervasive in power and conquest against the demons (including the seemingly insurmountable Raktabija) … well, it is the significant organ in many ways for the production of Speech.

And, as we know – there is no mightier weapon in all of the universe. Not least because that is precisely what the universe is.

In short – we are used to hearing about these two salient features: Kali standing over Shiva (as Shava), and with Her Tongue Protruding out … with each as emblematic of Her being ‘limited’, ‘disempowered’, and otherwise ‘submissive’.

Yet upon closer and more perspicacious insightful inspection – we find it is the exact opposite. Kali is not ‘limited’ nor ‘disempowered’ – She is the Limitless [you shall recognize the Sanskrit theonymic reference there – Aditi] and Empowering. And standing tall in the opposite of a ‘submissive’ posture – yet at the same time, tacitly enabling Her Consort to also begin to Rise to Stand Up (and thence, of course, to dance) with Her in Union.

Many deemed Ellison Emerling too good to be true, and it seemed that he had finally tarnished and turned to brass since returning home. They were all right. The act must have ended, a play that even Ellis hadn't known he was apart of. It was almost as though he couldn't remember the lines or the blocking as he was lost to who he was when he had fallen into Mala's company and arms.

"I'm trying to help my family. All of this— this whole fucking mess is because of them!" Ellis protested, profanity foreign on his tongue but burning with a relishing in his chest. "I said I'd never come back here because of this, I'm sorry. As soon as it's over, we can go back."

Could they?

Ellis clenched his jaw, the tension still not enough to bring him into focus. He felt like he was on the path for another round of loss, and no promise of his family finally giving him the fortune they saved for him could pay the cost.

"You're not useless," He sighed, defeat pricking at his senses. "I'm doing this for my brother. He was suppose to do all of this. It was always going to be him, and it ended up killing him. I'm trying to do right by him. It wasn't suppose to be Elliott, but I let it and look what happened."

Elliott was the younger Emerling child, but he had proven to be the better heir to the old money legacy. He was as smart of a whip, sometimes too much for his own good, and Ellison had no problem breaking tradition to give his brother control. But Elliott's ambition and desperation to prove to their parents that he could save them all had lead to his death when he visited one of the oil rigs, took on a task he wasn't ready for, and it killed him.

This felt like an end, perhaps the end, for them. Ever since Ellis had given up on his own career and entrenched himself into his family's business, it was as though he'd been going through the motions with the rest of his life. With her. Where had the love gone? How had it all seemed to slip away so easily?

"Do you hear how robotic that sounds? You used to want to have fun and do things with me. It wasn't just about coming home after work, taking out the trash, having dinner, then turning in after we cleaned up. Our life hadn't been a routine." Hurt hit her gut and made Mala a little queasy with the words that followed as Ellis exited the kitchen. Away from her and this discussion. "Why can't you? What about your family — me? You made vows and promises to me, Ellis. And what, I'm just easily tossed away like a piece of garbage?"

The realization of what he was saying sunk in and Mala had stopped moving. Stood in place as she felt everything crumbling around her, "is that how little I mean to you?" The question was barely above a whisper, words barely made it past the lump in her throat.

"Why are you taking this all on your own? Why haven't you asked me for help? Do you think I'm useless, too?"
