A big upside to the way superheroes drape and conduct themselves... In a world like this it would be very, VERY easy for Superheroes to start a revolution. They're symbols, living and breathing and too powerful to shut up. Freedom Fighters 2

She's my new favorite now— from Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Tumblr media
Polina Petrova!
Not gonna lie, her story is oddly similar to Farah's: destroyed home by invasion, family members dying in the war, a brother who's weaker than her, a father that taught her how to use guns, infamous with the invaders and being a complete badass.
There's many differences, of course. Polina is living in Stalingrad when the Soviet Union was still together. She doesn't go through the ten years of imprisonment. She had more time with her father. She's also much older when her story starts, already an adult. Unfortunately we don't get much of her life before the present, other than that her mother died a decade before.
She's also independent, never connecting with anyone that isn't her family. She's a sniper known as Lady Nightingale. She's based on a real person. Farah isn't but she was definitely inspired by real life freedom fighters.
Comparisons aside and returning to sanity, she's awesome. I'm sad that we don't get her life after the game ends. But I suppose that makes writing fanfics easier.

Is it true that the reason Uncle Sam and several other WWII-era superheroes disappeared even before the whole McCarthy-HUAC debacle because they went to an alternate universe where the Axis won in order to continue the fight against Fascism?
The one hand, it sounds kinda crazy, even for superheroes, but in the other it sounds in-character for Uncle Sam.
Yep. I mean like you said its fucking ludicrous, even for the kind of lives that these heroes lead but its just true in this case. The Multiverse is a really hard idea to wrap your head around outside science fiction but sometimes it will come roaring in whether we like it or not.
Tumblr media
(Propaganda poster of the Freedom Fighters produced in 1946)
The Freedom Fighters were already a very insular and embattled part of the Squadron. Their specific mandate was to support resistance movements against fascism all over the world along the periphery of Axis territory where Uncle Sam's considerable influence could stave off the Spear of Destiny while they worked in secret. Their main ports of call for most of the war were in Burma, the Phillipines, China and the southern Mediterranean.
Because of the secretive and intensive nature of their work, they became a very opaque bubble within the Squadron, tightly bonded to one another with their locations and activities often unknown even to the Squadron at large for weeks or even months.
Soon after the war (as in, ON V-J Day) they became aware of the alternative universe you mentioned where the Axis managed to not only win the war but hold dominion over most, if not all, of the world.
During the entire period between the end of the war and the early days of the Justice League they were embattled as the main resistance in that universe, eventually turning the tide and overthrowing Nazi rule with the JLA's help, where they returned to our world. (Not the Firebrand on their team was the Earth X version of original Firebrand Rod Reilly, who died during the Pearl Harbor attacks on our world and did not survive the Fighters' final battle on Earth X)
I DO want to talk about Uncle Sam at some point though because as you implied he is a fascinating figure. (I've actually met him. Like, legit spoken to him, he comes into the museum like...once or twice a month. I think he knows my name)

SMASH COMICS #14 (September, 1940). Cover by Gill Fox.
This issue presented the origin and first appearance of The Ray, one of Quality Comics' powerhouse superheroes.
Tumblr media
The Ray first appears, albeit without pants. He would have those in the next issue, but then mysteriously be missing his distinct head fin. Art by Lou Fine, who signed his work on The Ray "E. Lectron."
The Ray would later become more well known as a member of the Freedom Fighters in Justice League of America (vol. 1) #107 (October, 1973), almost two decades after DC Comics had acquired all of Quality's characters when that company went out of business in 1956.

Do you have any thoughts on Phantom Lady and Black Condor, of Freedom Fighters fame?
By far my favorite iteration of the Freedom Fighters was 'Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters' by Gray, Palmiotti and Acúna. And it so happens that Phantom Lady and Black Condor were my favorite characters in that book... especially the John Trujillo version of Black Condor (he's a super fun and interesting character).
Tumblr media
Phantom Lady is fun too. Her costume is a bit much (imagine it takes a lot of spirit glue to keep her boobs from falling out of that get-up). Still, her powers are very cool and it was fun that she purposefully dressed in a provocative fashion because it distracted her adversaries and gave her an advantage.
Tumblr media
If I recall correctly, there was an animated about the Freedom Fighters. I haven't seen it, but would definitely be down for checking it out. Anyone know if it's a good watch?

Avatar: the Last Airbender - Vigilante AU
Do you ever think about that one time Katara became a vigilante eco-terrorist called the Painted Lady? I feel like that’s not talked about enough.
Here, Katara and Zuko become Best Friends/Vigilante Buddies without knowing each other’s identity
Platonic Identity Porn. If that wasn’t a thing before, it is now.
Sokka & Aang never discovered Katara’s identity as the Painted Lady but Toph knows all.
This could also be a modern AU, in which case all the Gaang are Vigilantes.
- Katara’s the Painted Lady; her mom, dad, and papa (Kya/Hakoda/Bato) were/are part of a secret group investigating and gathering proof of Ozai’s many violations of Native land rights treaties. Kya got badly injured or killed while investigating and Katara isn’t about to let that slide, even if her parents don’t want her involved. She becomes an ecoterrorist targeting Ozai Incorporated.
- Toph’s the Blind Bandit; she ran away from home and is homeless, surviving by being the champion of an illegal fighting ring. She helps out other homeless people whenever she can but doesn’t go out of her way to patrol or anything.
- Zuko’s the Blue Spirit; after being burned, Iroh discovered the abuse and took custody (which wasn’t hard since Ozai didn’t fight for him). Despite this, Zuko feels it’s his responsibility as a son to stop his father’s economic imperialism.
- Sokka’s a Kyoshi Warrior; part of a vigilante team led by Suki. By day, this team is just a Scout Troop that teaches self-defense.
- Jet runs a gang that doubles as anti-hero vigilantes called the Freedom Fighters. He takes in any homeless or abused kid he can and will do anything to keep them fed, happy, and avenged.
- Azula, Mai, & Ty-Lee are a bounty hunter trio hired by Ozai (a corrupt CEO). Azula’s still his daughter, but being in modern times didn’t stop him from molding her into a child soldier to assassinate his enemies.
- Aang’s a new vigilante trying to avenge the monasteries destroyed by Ozai’s corporation. He’s an exchange student living with Katara, Sokka, Hakoda, Bato, and/or Kya.
- Teo (the Mechanic’s son from the Northern Air Temple) kits out all the vigilantes’ gear, tech, and outfits with help from Sokka.
Credit to @symphony_sonata on Instagram for their modern civilian lives. Link: https://instagram.com/symphony_sonata?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)
I also got a lot of inspiration from searching “the blue spirit avatar” on pinterest if you want concept art.

That's...that's just real cool. I don't know how people feel about the Golem being a nazi stomping kaiju, other people will have opinion on that. But that's such a neat idea with all of them in general. Freedom Fighters 12
