The moon that once glistened under the spine of your body in an even hue had been replaced with low and thick rods of lightning, leaving their mark along your hips, thighs, and arms. You welcomed them silently, noticing the sudden itch you felt along your side and the lines that had slowly been etching themselves into your skin, unnoticed until they were some form of permanent.

You let them in, soaking deep into you with a slight color to them. They were dark at first, but you knew with time and the work of the sun that they would lighten. You ran your fingers along them sometimes, the texture something you found mesmerizing. Along with Ellie.

Her hands slowly crept up your shirt, her fingers dancing along that same spine that now was being lit up from the moon. The same one who had shined bright enough through the window to catch a glimpse of the sight.

Ellie’s arms wrapped around you, facing her as the two of you kept each other up far too late, talking.

“I think it’d be lonely, up there all alone…” you whispered, your skin continuing to hum with a warm buzz.

In the summer and you had the windows open to let some air into you and Ellie’s stagnant bedroom. Hence another reason you two were still up: it was far too hot to sleep.

The wind had just then nipped at the exposed slit of your back, drawing you in closer to Ellie as her hand shifted against you, feeling the beauty lines graze the pads of her fingers.

She let the sleepy smile grow against her lips, her eyes fighting to stay open. “I think it’d be cool. You could see everything. Gravity, be floating in the air. Don’t cha think that’s cool?” she asks you, and her fingers had begun to play with your skin, lazily running her fingers over and over and over the same spot.

“Maybe�� I'd wanna go with you, not by myself.” and you soften into her touch, melt even.

You unclasp your hands from their stiff position against your chest to reach up and place a palm against Ellie’s cheek. She hums against you, letting the warmth of your hand lull her further into a sleep state.

“Have you always had so many freckles?” you ask, and your voice is so quiet, so small, that you think she’s really fallen asleep this time. But her hand is still skidding slowly across your stretch marks. She’s awake.

“Hm?” she says, and her eyes slowly flutter open on eye at a time when your thumb begins to stroke her softly.

“Your freckles. Have they always been so… freckly?” and you laugh at yourself, the tiredness in your voice and body pulling you further and further into the mattress.

“More in the summer,” she whispers, and draws in a yawn.

“Mm.” is all you say.

And the two of you stay like that for a few beats, your eyes falling shut once again to drift off. You were so tired, but you wanted to keep talking, to keep Ellie talking about space, and her freckles, and the scars she had gotten.

There was a fear in you that this was all the time left in the world, these groggy hours staying up and mumbling small and nearly incoherent sentences back and forth while fighting the sleep that you knew would wash over you eventually. The sleep that would cause your breathing to fall even as you shuffled closer to Ellie. Despite the heat and starched air.

But before the gnawing feeling could creep up your throat and prick tears into your eyes, Ellie spoke up again.

“I like these,” she croaked. Her eyes had stayed shut but you knew what she meant from the adjustment her palm had made against your skin, rubbing her it against your stomach before resting flat, stagnant.

“You do?” your heartbeat begins to echo in your ears, the low quick thump thump thump sending a sleepy smile across your lips as you moved your hand to place it over your chest.

You had always known it… subconsciously at least. You knew when you and Ellie had hung out for the first time over a year ago, and you had caught her staring at you when your shirt had accidentally ridden up, reaching for something on a shelf. And you knew when you both had a bet going that ended up in Ellie losing, forcing her to jump in the river in the dead of winter.

She of course dragged you in with her. And after you swore curses at her under your breath and made it back inside to change, her eyes had lingered on you, watching the way you stripped off your only pair of clothes and were forced to sit around in your bra and underwear. She followed suit. Saying, “It’s only fair.”

And you knew even now, when she was saying it under her breath. Reeling you in as much as she could so your hips were sticking together like glue… you knew.

The confession sent a blossom of pride through your chest. As much as Ellie’s eyes can speak a thousand words, it of course felt good having three specific ones to let echo in your head.

“Yeah, always have.” and there’s another wave of wind that tumbles in through the window, catching just the tips of your toes. You curl your legs up and inward before letting one drape over hers with a small breath escaping your lips.

The thin sheet that is covering you both snags on your quick adjustment, but neither of you mind.

“Think they’re cool. Like snakes. Cool little snakes.” and Ellie kisses your forehead then, her other hand reaching for the back of your neck to tuck it under her chin. “Cool snakes,” she mumbles before the smile on your face fades and you and Ellie both finally fall asleep, the moon shifting in its place in the sky moments before she says goodnight.
