He beat chronic myeloid leukemia in 2008, underwent coronary bypass surgery in 2015 and was open about his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2020.Three years ago, the six-time MVP penned an essay describing himself as "fortunate" to survive prostate cancer. He wrote about his medical experience as an ideal outcome, highlighting racial disparities in the healthcare system."I’ve been fortunate because my celebrity has brought me enough financial security to receive excellent medical attention," he wrote. "But while I’m grateful for my advantages, I’m acutely aware that many others in the Black community do not have the same options and that it is my responsibility to join with those fighting to change that. Because Black lives are at risk. Serious risk."Abdul-Jabbar retired in 1989 after playing for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers. He was a social justice champion throughout his career, an effort he has continued in retirement.

Subscribe to Ball Don't LieJake Fischer and Dan Devine get together to talk about Draymond Green’s indefinite suspension by the NBA, Giannis fighting with the Pacers over a game ball and the 1st place Minnesota Timberwolves. On this episode of No Cap Room, Jake Fischer and Dan Devine discuss Draymond Green’s indefinite suspension by the NBA and whether it is a sign of the end of the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty. Jake also talks about what the Warriors might be looking to do on the trade market.Jake is in San Antonio to watch the Spurs take on the Los Angeles Lakers (without LeBron James), and he has a lot of thoughts about what Gregg Popovich and the Spurs are doing as the team has lost 18 games in a row. The development of young players is the #1 priority in San Antonio, but are they getting too aimless and experimental?Giannis Antetokounmpo set a career high, and a Milwaukee Bucks franchise high, when he scored 64 points against the Indiana Pacers last night. But the big news story is how upset he was about not getting the game ball delivered to him after the win, which just adds more fuel to this budding rivalry that started in the NBA In-Season Tournament. Finally, the Minnesota Timberwolves are tied for the best record in the NBA (along with the Boston Celtics) and are finally seeing the potential that they hoped to achieve when they traded for Rudy Gobert before last season. Dan explains why this team is a real championship contender, and Jake talks about what the potential fallout could be if the T’Wolves can’t find success in the playoffs this year.🖥️ Watch this full episode on YouTubeCheck out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsThis article contains affilate links; if you click such a link and make a purchase, we may earn a commission.

Zach Lavine wants out of Chicago. He hasn't wanted to play for head coach Billy Donovan since last season and is just isn't making big wave about it. If Lavine isn't dealt, there is a poor likelihood that he'd return to the Chicago Bulls, either. The Bulls want to deal the disgruntled guard. So with all that common ground, where does the hold up lie?According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, "executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas is finding no real market interest in Zach LaVine."There are almost two months remaining until the Feb. 8 trade deadline, and month before Jan. 15, when many players signed in the offseason become eligible to be moved. For Karnisovas moving Lavine sooner than later would be optimal so Chicago can see what it has, what its team looks like with the players it received and where it stands in its ability to negotiate with star DeMar DeRozan. As of right now, the Raptors and Lakers are the two teams that keep being mentioned in the conversation for a possible Lavine trade. The two-time All-Star reportedly prefers the Lakers because of his Kluth Sports relationship, and he also spent one season playing for UCLA, too.At 9-16, Chicago owns the fourth-worst record in the Eastern Conference, while the Lakers are the inaugural winners of the NBA's In-Season Tournament. Los Angeles (15-10) is in fifth place in the Western Conference. After being drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014, Lavine has spent seven of his 10 years in the league with Chicago.

SAN ANTONIO — Gregg Popovich walked into Madison Square Garden for Victor Wembanyama’s New York debut in early November as if his Spurs had walked into the Sistine Chapel. There was a reverence in Popovich’s voice, speaking on the history and the setting, the opportunity for his French phenom and No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft to run that hallowed court with its iconic organ chiming from the rafters.A little more than a month later, Popovich did not approach the possibility of Wembanyama’s first clash with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday with nearly the same aplomb. Perhaps the grizzled head coach had learned that James, listed as questionable following a Tuesday night battle in Dallas after the Lakers’ sprint to the inaugural in-season tournament title, would not be dressing before Los Angeles returns to the Frost Bank Center on Friday. But Popovich nonetheless dismissed any extra gravity surrounding James and Wembanyama crossing paths.“I think more about trying to make 3-point shots and that sort of thing,” Popovich said. His team’s weaknesses have certainly been top of mind as the Spurs’ franchise-record losing streak has reached 18 games following their 122-119 loss to the Lakers. San Antonio did shoot 16-of-37 from distance to power a valiant comeback effort, but it converted just 5-of-41 from 3-point range in its previous defeat at Houston. Overall the Spurs came into Wednesday ranked 29th in the league in 3-point success, and their dearth of consistent marksmen — in addition to the team’s porous defense — has helped damper the promising early returns Wembanyama has delivered.Anthony Davis shoots over Victor Wembanyama in the first half at the Frost Bank Center on Dec. 13, 2023, in San Antonio. (Photo by Ronald Cortes/Getty Images)It’s reached the point where, after an offseason of confidence about slotting Wembanyama next to versatile center Zach Collins, the former Gonzaga big man’s particular struggles from deep forced San Antonio to pull the plug on the twin towers starting pairing after 20 games — despite its hopes of saving Wembanyama from nightly beatings that come against opposing brutes like Anthony Davis. Collins has connected on just 27.1 percent of his threes after drilling 37.4 percent of a career-high 147 attempts last season.“I think if we were shooting it a little bit better, I think it would have worked better,” Collins said. “The negative right now is spacing, so that’s a big reason why we went back to one big out there starting the game instead of two.”The other notable change in San Antonio’s approach has been the conclusion of their experiment with 6-foot-9 swingman Jeremy Sochan at point guard. Popovich had previously labeled that effort a season-long case study, evaluating an unusual passing gene from Sochan despite the No. 9 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft having never played the role of lead ball-handler at any stage of his basketball life. And yet the results were too paltry, the losses too frequent, the stakes of Wembanyama’s development too high. Especially as Sochan was and still is being tasked with blanketing opponents’ best guards. The Spurs are instead opening games without any nominal point guard. Five of San Antonio’s first-round selections over the past five drafts — Wembanyama, Sochan, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Malaki Branham — are all getting the chance to rip defensive rebounds and start breaks and learn along the way. Popovich left that unit on the floor for the first six minutes against Los Angeles before swapping in an entire lineup of reserves, including Collins.“Our spacing has been better,” Vassell said. “Even with all of us, even when Vic’s getting the rebound, he can push it up, too. So there’s no real stopping in play. We’re just kinda going and playing fast. And I think when we’re playing faster, we’re at our best.”The tweaks and adjustments are all emblematic of the greater vision Spurs staffers have deployed. No new idea has gone without further consideration as they create some form of basketball laboratory inside San Antonio’s magnificent new practice facility, which remains under active assembly 20 minutes north of downtown. A construction crew was hauling planks of lumber into the lobby and up the stairs during Spurs shootaround, while the team’s collection of prospects took turns shooting a pair of free throws at each basket around the exterior of the courts on the second level. The building is open despite the work in progress. This roster is far away from any lofty dreams of immediate playoff contention with Wembanyama at the center of the franchise. Perhaps that should have been the realistic expectation from the beginning with the 19-year-old stepping into the NBA with more jersey than muscle hanging off his wiry frame. There is no savvy veteran to direct traffic in the right direction while play is underway. Longtime Spurs assistant Brett Brown, who returned to San Antonio after overseeing the storied “Process” rebuild in Philadelphia that produced reigning MVP Joel Embiid, could have told you that from the wobbly opening moments of Wembanyama’s Summer League debut. Wembanyama is still learning the different geometry and pageantry of this game compared to anything overseas.“It’s not that easy. It’s not easy at all,” Wembanyama said. “Sometimes we’re looking at film, and we just think, ‘Yeah, we could do that every time.’ But the reality of the court is that we have to make some reads and improvise at times. But, of course, one of my goals is to repeat what works.”San Antonio’s defensive shortcomings were on full display against the Lakers as well. The Spurs offered wide-open triples to Los Angeles’ lineup of shooters, who circled the perimeter as if standing at a series of Pop-A-Shot terminals. Davis feasted for 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting in the first half, many of which came from inside the black painted area of San Antonio’s home floor. And yet there remain those tantalizing glimpses, when Wembanyama can reject a Lakers floater on one end and then sprint to flush an alley-oop on the other. When San Antonio can claw back from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit with stop after stop. The Spurs produced the poorest defense in NBA history last season but have seen their efficiency rise to 12th over the past 10 games at 114.2 points per 100 possessions, according to NBA.com, which San Antonio believes is largely due to Wembanyama’s exceptional presence around the basket. He is already providing elite rim protection, swatting six shots against the Lakers and leading the league in block percentage — an astounding 8.2% of opponents’ two-point attempts when he's on the floor. And it’s not just the metrics. San Antonio has seen plenty of film in which Wembanyama’s mere presence and the threat of his wingspan simply deters opponents’ typical moves as they attack the cup.“Everybody knows if you try to challenge Victor straight up at the rim, you’re gonna lose,” Collins said.At worst, Wembanyama – who totaled 30 points, 13 rebounds and three steals against the Lakers – currently projects as a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate. The gaudy totals and statlines will come anytime he takes the court, by his sheer athleticism with such a ridiculous 8-foot wingspan, which his first H-E-B commercial celebrates. It aired on the Jumbotron during one timeout, featuring Wembanyama walking into an apartment with a dozen red shopping bags draped along his interminable arms. And yet this teenager with the world before him still understands nothing will compare to when he’s leading the Spurs away from a long, long stretch of losing.“It’s going to look better when we win,” Wembanyama said. This article contains affilate links; if you click such a link and make a purchase, we may earn a commission.

The emotion that drove Draymond Green to the NBA's 2017 Defensive Player of the Year award, four All-Star appearances and four championships has been described any number of ways — "competitive spirit," "energy," "bravado," "the frenzy," "passion," "a fiery attitude," "aggression," and, yes, even "that rage."As former Golden State Warriors guard Leandro Barbosa told ESPN for a 2016 piece titled, "Golden State's Draymond Green problem," the forward is at his best as "the guy that always gets mad, the guy everybody hates."Everyone in the organization — front-office members, coaches, teammates and even the man himself — has spoken ad nauseam over the last decade about the importance of Green striking a balance between anger and action. The dynasty's success has depended on him straddling that line, they have all said."If you take my fire away, I may be a decent player because I can really think the game," Green told Howard Beck, then of Bleacher Report, in 2018, when the Warriors' wagon was rolling to its third title in four years. "I'd still have that, but if you take my fire away, I'm not near the guy that I am and the player that I am."This ignores Green's ability to play basketball. In addition to his anger and acumen was an athleticism — never elite by NBA means but enough to switch onto any position, help at the rim, recover to the perimeter. Enough to drop a 32-15-9 line in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. Enough to put his acumen into action. But what happens when his athleticism fades, when he cannot compete with his less "fiery" rivals, when he can no longer make good on his basketball IQ? The only thing left for Green to act upon, I fear, is the anger.Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been involved in a long list of incidents during his NBA career that have mostly been overlooked because of the four championships. (AP Photo/Loren Elliott)Every so often in the past, Green crossed the line between passion and destruction, and each time the Warriors defended it as a fuel that drives them, for better or worse. With increased frequency, it is for worse, and Golden State is running out of ways to excuse his antics in the name of competition. You only take the good with the bad when the good helps deliver hardware, untold fortune and a new arena for everyone.Seven years ago, in the midst of Golden State's record-setting 73-9 campaign, after Green reportedly threatened head coach Steve Kerr and his teammates during a heated halftime exchange overhead from the locker room, was the first we really heard of this familiar refrain from Green and Golden State — let Draymond be Draymond.Months later, as Green kneed and kicked former Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams' groin in consecutive games, unraveling in the 2016 Western Conference finals, and then punched LeBron James' groin one series later, partly costing his team the greatest single season in NBA history, it was the same.Green: "I'm never going to be careful. I'm just going to be me, and the game will play out how it plays out."And Kerr: "The dangerous thing is, if you try to temper him too much, are you taking away his edge?"After Green repeatedly called Kevin Durant "a bitch" during a November 2018 verbal altercation that spilled from a timeout huddle into the locker room, Durant reportedly warned Green, "Everybody keeps saying, 'Draymond's emotional,' and, 'That's just Draymond.' As your brother, I'm not giving you that out. ... That's an excuse that everybody's allowed you to have, and I'm not allowing you to use that excuse anymore."Then-Warriors general manager Bob Myers issued a one-game suspension and said, "Basketball is an emotional sport, these things happen, we dealt with it in the manner we thought fit, and so we’re going to move on." Green swore he learned from the incident, even as he described it as something to "get through" rather than fix. Durant left in free agency at the end of the season, and Green later informed us, "I laughed in their — literally laughed in their face," when the Warriors ask him to apologize for his behavior. When Golden State retreated from the NBA consciousness amid Durant's departure, back-to-back season-ending injuries to Klay Thompson and a 2020 tanking campaign, so too did Green's ire (though he still ranked among league leaders in technical fouls, despite his own injury concerns). He had nothing to compete for.And when the Warriors returned to championship contention in 2022, Green nearly derailed them again. His athleticism failing him, Green resorted to mucking up the NBA Finals, pushing Jayson Tatum, running over Grant Williams, resting his feet on Jaylen Brown, shoving him and trying to pull his shorts down. It got so bad that Kerr benched Green at the end of Game 4 for the most important minutes of the series. Yet, when Green summoned a throwback performance in a clinching Game 6, the Warriors once again lauded him as the Stephen Curry of their defense, and Green accepted credit for his intensity's impact on another title."Draymond, his personality and his energy, his imprint is all over our team," Kevon Looney said at the time. When it's good, it's good, and it hasn't been good for a minute. Last season began with Green punching then-teammate Jordan Poole in the face, for which he received no suspension, and ended not long after he stomped on Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis' chest, for which he received a one-game ban. After a second-round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Kerr said in one breath that Green's fight with Poole derailed their championship aspirations and added in another, "If Draymond is not back, we’re not a championship contender." So, the Warriors rewarded him with a four-year, $100 million extension in July.Green is now seven years removed from threatening Kerr and countless excuses from accepting blame. Forgotten is his alleged assault of a college student in July 2016. Remembered are his defense and titles.Except, the Warriors are slipping from championship contention, Green's outbursts are becoming more frequent, and the correlation is coming into focus. He violently choked Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert at the end of last month, earned a five-game suspension and expressed no regret or apology upon his return. Instead, we heard the same old song-and-dance routine from Green and Golden State."I'm going to play basketball the way I play basketball,” said Green, somehow thinking that is basketball. "The way I play basketball has gotten me here. The way I play basketball has brought me a tremendous amount of success, individually and from a team standpoint, so I will always be myself. But I do understand and know there is room for growth, and I need to be better in those moments in different situations."Kerr said, "Draymond was wrong. He knows that. It’s a bad look. The five games is deserved, and we move forward." Then added: "Our defense instantly gets better with Draymond; we know that."Draymond Green turns 34 years old in March. If there was growth to be had, we would have seen some by now. Instead, on Tuesday night, Green swung at Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkić's face, earned an ejection and declared, "As you know, I’m not one to apologize for things that I meant to do, but I do apologize to Jusuf because I didn’t intend to hit him." His past behavior eliminates that benefit of doubt. So, Green awaits another suspension. And we await the next incident. This may soon fall under the guise of competitive spirit. Or, the Warriors will fade from the spotlight, Green's ability to prevent it will succumb to his age, and all that is left for someone who views every slight as a threat to his manhood will be the anger. This article contains affilate links; if you click such a link and make a purchase, we may earn a commission.
