number of unique chinese characters in a book

So there's this blog I read long ago on the number of unique chinese characters one uses. Say a person writes a 10k chinese novel. But how many characters are discrete?

Classical chinese poems and songs have me doubting my chinese ability as always, and that got me curious about how many chinese characters I know or write on a daily basis.

To answer this (and to very much knock my confidence like an idiot) I put together something to count the number of unique chinese characters in a passage. I use about... 2.8k characters in my general writing.

Then I wondered about the authors I read.

A quick search online suggests that a chinese user knows and uses 1000-3000 characters regularly, and after high school you are supposed to have taken in over 6000 characters -- something I'm pretty sure I didn't do.

That said, I got curious about the number of unique characters these authors I read usually use. That doesn't at all indicate writing competency, but well, it felt interesting regardless so I decided to go play with that a bit.

For reference, jinyong's wuxia novels are around 3.5k to 4.5k unique characters per novel.

you only need 2.5-3k characters to use chinese like natives do, it's not too much really!

I recorded some numbers and figures for something to work with with works I enjoyed. Fanfics I also included, which I saved on my computer a long time ago.

I made attempts to analyse the data in a fairer way, looking at the total word count and the highest frequency of "的"s (a very common chinese particle, think the letter "e") used in the passage. That sort of helped, but at the same time there are always outliers that manage to muddle up understanding every single time.

So now, observations. I categorised them into four levels according to the number of unique characters, from lowest to highest.

note: notable novels are highlighted in yellow for easy spotting, and fanfictions are shaded in grey. I added english titles for most of them because I didn't put them in when I first did the screencaptures.

first level: below 3.5k unique characters

Good authors don't always equate an extensive character set. Conversely, there are authors who basically cannot write well (subjective) and still end up with a surprisingly not-low unique character count.

Works like 靜影沉璧、瀟湘水冷、風骨同守 that adopted a more literary, classical chinese writing register had lower unique character counts than the others. This was not what I expected, considering these works were where I found most words I'm unfamiliar with and ended up questioning my chinese reading ability (sorry lol).

I was also surprised with 潭石、水千丞、覆水難收、木蘇里 (mu su li) because their writing are all pretty good, all achieved while using a much smaller lexicon range than what I've expected.

(不問三九 with good writing was also low and in this range, but I forgot to mark hers down so, shrugs.)

second: 3.6k to 4.5k characters

That said, some authors do typically reach a range of around 3.6-3.7k unique characters, which is a pretty wide character set. Supposing adding a book of an author increases the total number of unique characters the author has used, these authors tend to round up at around 4k+ words with 2-4 novels inputted.

With each book added, there would be an increase of a few hundred unique characters, but they tend to level off at about 4.3k etc., and that is likely their maximum unique character count.

Some do level off at around 3.7k though, which indicates a narrower range of lexicon employed.

third level: the weird level

weird because the unique character count increases by leaps and bounds with every new novel of theirs that I added, and we end up perplexed and baffled.

At around 1M to 1.5M words inputted from an author, I thought that the unique character count would be pretty steady already, similar to how the unique character counts for authors at the second level levelled off eventually.

That's not the case for these two authors here. It is perplexing because the settings of their books do not vary greatly, yet the choice of characters and words were, apparently, diverse enough to give a "forever"-going increase in unique character count with every book I added.

This category aggravates me so much I couldn't make head and tail of it honestly lol.

the final level: the eloquent and literate

Of course, in this world there are always very literate individuals, and verbose they may seem, some are good writers. Here are the authors who actually have a vast unique character range.

You may be wondering how this 3.7k differs from the ones in the second level, but bear in mind this is merely the result from a single work of the author, or that the author's book is, like, half the length of the other authors while achieving a far higher unique character count than others.

And there's meatbun at the top of the list; I used both 2ha and Yu Wu for her stats, but her 2ha alone was already higher than Royal Nirvana and any other book I tested, so she goes in this category.

And et voila. All of this may not make sense to you, I'm not even sure about how the reception of this would be, it was a passion project and an interesting evening that I had, and now that I have some (sort of subjective) results I hope to share it out. :)

JK live 5 August 1:41 am KST

Part 1

This one was a monster to tackle. One more of his 2:30 hr. lives. How this man does these lives is beyond me.

Truthfully, this could have fit into a one parter. But you see, there are just so many moments happening I didn't want you to miss out on, that I decided to split it into 2 parts.

So, lots to talk about, not so much as in heavy big substantial and more as in cute, entertaining and adorable.

And even though it's a long one, it's not one of those heavy lives where you need to be attentive the whole time. It's more about the vibe in this one, and that vibe can be described in one word:

A pleasure.

I lied. 2 words then.

JK started the live 5.8.2023 at 1:41 am KST.

So for number we have:

2+2+3+1+1+4=13

1:41 am a little early for him, eh? But this was him coming down (or perhaps not just yet) from the adrenaline rush of being on stage not that long before.

I was a little surprised at first him spending that high with us and not with JM, but then knowing that JM was performing the next evening, had a log day in front of him, not to mention probably not wanting to get him sick (you could feel the strain on JK’s voice during his performance), nor have JM deal with same voice issues he was dealing with before his performance, it made total sense that JK stayed away.

So JK is still hyped up from the performance and he’s doing the live from a new location at Brunnan, his room. He starts out the live by telling us that, and that he wants to do the lives from one location and he set this up especially for this purpose.

And let’s talk about this for a second now. He dressed the shelves up. He placed things on the shelves he wanted us to see. Perhaps taking off those he doesn’t want us to see. He’s pointing at the middle shelf, where Suga’s album is. This is his rookies autographed albums too. He knows we dissect every little thing w see in the lives. And he put that Silk sonic album right at the top, over his shoulder, so no one misses it.

Details that pop at you right away:

He has Burn it playing (he feels so guilty he forgot the lyrics while performing).

He has the Silk sonic album on the shelf behind him.

He has something from JITB on one of the shelves And Yoongi’s album as well.

Later on in the live he opens up Suga’s album, after laughing that he could have written something for him other than Jungkook, lol.

Also noticeable is what’s missing – FACE.

That one album he has been hyping for the past several months. But I guess you don't need a signed album when you have the actual singer at home with you.

JK opens with telling us he performed at Yoongi’s concert and he was so nervous, not being on stage like that for a while.

He was nervous so he messed up the lyrics at the beginning.

It’s amazing how hard he is on himself.

Like us, we don’t even care. We got to see him on stage. He sang with Yoongi and performed Seven. Win win. So, he forgot a few words at the beginning of the song, so what?

But to him, it's not only a fail, it's him letting down Yoongi, and it's eating at him. And he just cannot let it go.

Oh, and by the by he’s wearing the ring on the necklace again. Which he will be asked about further on during the live.

Yeah, so he’s being hard on himself.

He’s asked about his cold, says he’s taken medicine for it. And later he confirms that indeed he is still suffering from that pesky cold that will just not go away. Later on in the live JK is asked again about his cold, answers yes, he still has it but is taking medicine.

Since it was Suga’s concert he starts the playlist with D-day the album.

He’s so disappointed in himself, calling himself an amateur. He says he was overpowered by army’s screams. I just wish he would give himself more slack, but that’s just the way he is.

I guess he needed to come vent. But maybe also needed some of us to tell him it’s ok, which I’m sure there were those that did. More comment of that kind than he actually reads out aloud for us.

He goes off camera, breaks some dishes in the kitchen… I’m joking…or am I?

Comes back with his tumbler and his drink (probably his usual).

Takes him a bit (way more than a bit) to let go of it (his 'messing up'). He’s doing it all with a smile, but still not letting it go.

Next time he won’t make mistakes…

Hey JK, did you forget that you are human???

JK explains it took a while to go live after he got home from the concert as he was fixing up the internet and setting up the room for the live.

He wanted to go live to talk about the things that happened that day.

He had a recording and then did the concert.

*Interesting as of its own. Recording for the album? What kind of a recording? Of course he doesn't tell us.

He ends by saying the ending (of the day) wasn’t good and slaps his thigh (not the last time he does that, just one of those things one sometimes does when they are angry at themselves or disappointed in themselves).

He tells us that he has no schedule the coming morning.

But you see, he's too hyped up and angry at himself to rest.

Army try to tell him we didn’t even notice, he’s still not buying it, lol.

Do you think we didn’t get stupid ass comments during the live?

Of course we got them. Ian being one of them (and not only once either). No matter how many times he’s asked to stop with this stupidity, it just keeps going on. Once is funny. Twice amusing. Three times annoying. Anything more is just plain infuriating, even more so after asked to stop with it.

JK’s asked to play his favourite song for army but says he has to play Suga’s songs. Man is trying to repent, lol.

But he really is upset. He talks about while performing Seven, had one of his ear pieces out so all he could hear was the drum and he felt he was singing off key. He doesn’t think it was the sound system, but his mind was out of it.

He goes to look for the performance uploaded to YT by army (naughty) and watches it, and again so harsh on himself.

He’s not happy with his performance and stops it towards the end of Seven. He is amused though by the fans at the concert singing the “fucking” version…

So, JK is reading comments, not reacting too much. We’re close to 30 minutes in and there was a handful of comments maybe that he read out. Makes you wonder if it’s because he’s still caught up in the whole ��I fucked up” thing or that the comments are pure crap. Probably a combination of the two.

He wants to have a concert.

Me too JK. I want him to have a concert.

But he keeps going back to burn it. Should have practices more. Disappointed.

Do we see a theme to this live yet?

At this point you can see he’s getting even more upset.

And then he decides to change the angle of the camera cause his right side is better, lol.

You think he's done with the concert?

No sir.

At this point JK starts asking if he can do it again tomorrow.

He starts by throwing the question into the air several times. Then he asks staff members if he can have a chance to redeem himself, as he has a resting day the next day.

Nope, he's not done.

Because then he tries to get army to talk to the company.

Like what about suga? Shouldn’t he be the one to decide about this? Lol. Oh wait, then he tells army to call Suga. Lmao.

He goes on with a little emotional manipulation on us: “do it! We are friends. No?” Lol.

See what's going on here? Yeah, JK's terrified of Yoongi. Lol.

He continues saying that if it was his concert he’d be ok, but because it’s yoongi’s…it’s kind of rough.

For all those that are all about : if he’s JM’s bf he should have known JM is performing the next day. Well duh – of course he knows. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to redeem himself. He knows he probably can’t, that there is another member going on, and that’s why he’s ‘trying’ every way possible to maybe make it happen. He’s saying the words, but let’s be serious here for a second. He isn’t really expecting to get a yes as an answer. Wait a little longer, cause it gets better.

People keep asking him about food. Poor man. Just leave him alone, he's fasting. Well, trying to. Really really hard. And it's a real struggle too. Just wait and see.

Then he’s asked about the necklace.

Here's what JK had to say about the necklace.

Ok, so here are my thoughts about this one.

Let's start with the way JK says "I don't think so. It shouldn't be" the necklace from Seven while checking it out, is really strange.

And truthfully, it really does look more like the ring JM has on his necklace in Like crazy.

So, strangely ‘someone’ gave it to JK in the past, we don’t know when or what for, and it strangely happens to be very similar if not exactly the same as the ring on JM’s necklace which he wore for Like crazy MV. Story could very well be true. His reasoning for wanting it or liking it sounded a little, how should I put it? Ehm… odd. It’s also the facial expression while thinking what to say that felt a little off to me.

But here's the thing. The chain, it doesn't seem to be the same, but the ring, it looks really similar. We are assuming that the ring on the chain is JM's to begin with because we first saw it in Like crazy. What if the ring was JK's to start with? And JM wearing it in his clip was having a part of JK with him while filming the MV?

We already know that the ring on the chain JK is wearing in Seven is not the same s the one we saw on JM in Like crazy. What if that ring is actually JM's? What if that's why JK was so quick to say that the Seven ring "shouldn't" be the one he has on?

A lot of What ifs, and a lot of possible delusional thinking. And yet, I know I'm going to be on the look out for JK's Seven ring around someone else's neck or on his finger.

To those that thought maybe, or those who are spreading stories about a tour:

From the horse’s mouth.

Someone writes a lovely comment, which he thanks them for.

“Take care of yourself… I am worried but proud."

He says “thank you”, and

It was!

See? That’s how it should be. Not bloody Ian or touch your nose or marry me or other sorts of fuckery.

JK starts to explain that he has a gaming room. But since he doesn’t game anymore (there we have it one more time), he brought the Wi fi from the pc room into the living room. Brought it (I’m assuming the router) and connected it again. Wi fi didn’t really work well in the bedroom. He connected a Wi fi extender outside the bedroom and it didn’t work well. He put it into the bedroom and it’s working. So now he’s able to do lives in his room. “It’s so nice…” and wait for it, cause here it comes again…

And here I am asking myself why? Why not do the live in the pc room where you say you had proper working Wi fi? Was there something there you didn’t want us to see or was there something in the bedroom you wanted us to see?

Or, and here it comes again, is this all to tell us and show us how he has made a total disconnect from gaming.

Listen, you could have called me delusional the first time I said JK was adamant to tell us he has stopped gaming (with Tae and the Woogas), back when he first said he's selling his computer cause he ain't playing games anymore. Maybe even the second and third time he told us that and I was "yeah, this is clearly him sending us a message, hammering it in again and again". But now, seriously. If there is anyone that isn't seeing it they are wearing blinders. JK has been hammering this in for the last 4 lives at least:

"I AM NOT PLAYING GAMES";

"I AM NOT GAMING ANYMORE";

"I AM NEVER GAMING AGAIN";

"I DISMANTLED MY GAMING ROOM, DISCONNECTED THE ROUTER AND MADE SURE THERE IS NO MORE WI FI THERE";

"I HAD PROPER WI FI IN THE GAMING ROOM BUT DECIDED TO DISCONNECT IT ALL AND MOVE IT TO MY ROOM AND DO THE LIVES THERE, CAUSE I AIN'T GAMING NO MORE, LIKE EVER AGAIN AND IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEADS."

Oh, and did I mention that he repeated it twice here. That he doesn't play games anymore? Within a span of a minute or so?

So yeah, think what you will, JK ain't playing games no more. Like ever. And you know who he was connected to be playing games with in the past few months? No need for guessing. Tae and the Woogas. So guess who he ain't playing games with no more.

43 minutes in JK is still at himself for forgetting the lyrics.

And again wants to go back tomorrow, lol. Doesn’t need to sing Seven, just Burn it.

At this point we are almost ¾ of an hour into the live. Man is not giving up.

Ok, so now he’s talking about infiltrating the concert and just going on stage, lol.

And then this:

LMAO.

He’s hungry, wouldn’t have guessed it…

And he takes us on a walk through the house to the kitchen…

Ok, so now we know for sure the location of his bedroom.

Plays with the light in the lounge. I do get how when you have multiple light switches you can forget which is which, I do it all the damn time. And his reactions to the light.

So finally we reach the kitchen after a bit of a walkabout and then asks army to help him decide if to eat or not, or more so “is there any army who will stop me?” lol. He wants to eat. But he hopes army stop him.

he decides against eating something after remembering he already ate ‘today’, the 4th (well technically it’s the 5th already so he didn’t actually eat yet, lol). It ain’t easy this intermittent fasting, even more so his way of 1 meal a day. I think he said he’s doing 20-4 or 22-2 which are both super hard, especially for someone as active as he is.

And then remembers he has to wash his towels and put them in the dryer. But gets distracted and starts to vacuum. And where exactly he was vacuuming I have no idea, he went and disappeared into the butler’s pantry/laundry.

And then he’s talking to himself about having less towels than he thought he had, still off camera.

Towels in dryer (?) and now we are back, not eating and on our way back to his room.

We’re back in the room and he’s still dreaming about that makguksu.

He finally kind of lets go of it around 1 hour into the live, saying he really needs to let it go. Although he does still talk about it.

Happiest moment in life? “when I see army”.

The reason he likes concerts, of course he likes singing and dancing and performing, but army is the reason he likes it the most.

And this is when Yoongi makes an appearance.

My guess, she said laughingly – either staff or a one Park Jimin (who was supposed to be asleep) called Yoongi to tell him “go take care of this. End it once and for all”. Lol.

Yoongi in the comments.

JK asks again if he can come tomorrow and Yoongi says no, JK laughingly disappointed.

Answers yoongi of course he’s excited meeting army after so long. But then he’s upset about messing up, so how does he think he feels.

Sorry. Sorry brother!

He was scared by army screams, and it’s been such a long time he was overwhelmed and blanked out. He compliments yoongi, yoongi goes.

"Yoongi said I can’t go tomorrow. He said no. why can’t I?"

Ok, so I guess this is where I'll be cutting off part 1 of this 2 part post.

Should we call part 1 D-day regrets?

And if part 1 is D-day regrets, would part 2 be D-day blues? Or perhaps Makguksu blues?

people (including my interactive storytelling teacher) have told me im good at writing distinct characters/realistic dialogue! so i guess that! :,D

CONSISTENCY. finishing things. ending up hating what i’ve written like 3 months after it’s done.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

well,,, that’s what i always do. english is another language to me! cop out answer, lmao. but other than that, i guess i could be persuaded to write a few lines in spanish here and there. did study it for 7 years, after all.

overall, i thinks it pretty cool! as long as there is an ez translation somewhere, easy to understand without a translation, or if it’s not done in a way that bi/multilinguals absolutely would not speak B)

oh god. percy jackson. it’s still out there somewhere. i forgot my username and password so i’ll prolly never find it (thank god) but yeah. it was solangelo bc i was closeted and emo.

probably ‘mothman is real and he wants to kill me’. i had a lot of fun with it! i also really like ‘*cocks gun* manor’s haunted’ just because i based it off of the haunting of hill house which is like, one of the best books ever.

hiii, first off im gonna say I love your fics, and I love your analysis of all the NXX boys, it rlly made me wanna learn more about the non-luke characters lol. (plus that one fic of yours that was omega luke going into heat permanently lives inside my head)

I just wanted to say abt the ask that wonders if Rosa knows Luke's illness is chronic - he tells her explicitly that the doctors have told him he has less than three years of life left in story 3 of under the milky way. it's right at the start of story 3, in the letter he sends rosa.

which also leads me to a question about the canonicity? canon-ness? canonnity? of the cards. I'm sorry if I'm just completely out of the loop, I dropped ToT for a bit before coming back and I have a terrible memory. but are all the events in these cards canon? because like the asker said, it rlly would change the dynamic if Rosa thought the illness was just chronic. (also I forgot if he mentioned the 3 year thing elsewhere). post-utmw Rosa knows he only has 3 years left but does regular rosa know?

im so glad you like both my analyses and my fics (especially the omega luke fic gosh, it’s been so long since then, i almost forgot i wrote that HAHA)

now in regards to that ask youre mentioning, i fear there mightve been a misunderstanding! cuz in that ask, we were pertaining to the mc that exists within the Main Story Route. whereas the mc youre describing is the mc that exists within the Luke Personal Story route. forgive me if i misunderstood but to explain, eventually, main story and personal story (aka where all the respective cards, respective personal stories, and probably even the team events in a wibbly wobbly timey wimey way, exist in) diverges

to better visualize this, ive made a chart. but you caught me at a time i was doodling and had my drawing tablet plugged in so we’re all getting a taste of my bad handwriting

so if you look at this, you'll first notice how i forgot the number 6 in main story and then rushed to squeeze it in. but more importantly this is what i mean by diverging

based on what i remember, im pretty sure (....okay semi-pretty sure) that for all of the boys, main stories 1-5 has happened. this is because cards will mention dangerous/busy work (nxx work) and thus mc must be part of the team first for that work to happen. main stories 1-5 also must have happened because thats how she meets/works with (or re-meets, in luke's case) all of the boys one by one. after which, the personal story routes (along with all the cards) happens in a divergent timeline

there are some caveats tho. very very early cards of luke (and for this ask i will focus on luke's divergent personal story route timeline, just for simplicities sake.....should i abbreviate too? Luke's DPSRT = divergent personal story route timeline. Luke's MSRT = main story route timeline. perfect. that totally makes things less confusing!) mention mc not yet knowing where luke was during his 8 year disappearance, meaning that those cards MUST have happened BEFORE main story 5, when he tells the truth about where he went

barring little bits like those though, this divergence generally stands. the biggest proof of the divergence showed up in main story 9 because at that point, mc in Luke's DPRST already Knew about luke's illness. but mc in Luke's MSRT does not, and does not know as much as of the details as well.

another smaller proof that Luke's DPRST and Luke's MSRT are divergent is aaron. in Luke's DPRST, mc meets aaron for the very first time in bloom chapter personal story 4. but in Luke's MSRT, mc meets aaron for the first time in main story 9.

now on canonicity? my answer is yes

on like, everything.

barring the AU cards (like sott and gufeng cards, yknow), everything in all timelines is canon. just NOT at the same time. you can only choose one and---

i think the prologue is a dream sequence or some kind of metaphor or some kind of fever dream, yeah, but one that takes place in the Main Story Route Timeline specifically. and that something went wrong. terribly wrong, though idk what yet exactly.

the reason i think this happens in the MSRT in particular is cuz of 1) it's a prologue to main story in particular, i feel + 2) because of what we call "pulls" in this game: we use a Tear (of themis) to receive a pull of a card, which are called Visions.

all the cards of happier romances take place in divergent timelines, and these are visions because maybe it is MSRT mc who is having visions of these different possibilities that couldve happened, if only she werent in this timeline she chose, in the main story timeline where so many horrible things happen.

.....i feel as if ive said the word "timeline" way too many times to be making sense now, but theres my answers, anon 1 and anon 2!!

Scans from Railway Archive No. 19's print of "The H.L. Hopwood Collection 1901-1926 Part 2: The Furness Railway at Barrow in 1902"

Scanned these primarily for @angryskarloey, but posting them here along with some very basic explanations of the engine classes seen.

Original scans as pdfs available upon request.

Harold Hopwood was a rail photographer. He seems to have been particularly Useful for nabbing high-quality images of endangered railway engines. (You should get a load of how often RA managed to use the words "antiquated," "elderly," and "anachronistic" in the ~1000 words dedicated to its write-up and captions.)

Below Mr. Hopwood takes us on a day trip to Barrow Dockyards in the summer of 1902.

Just to orient the general reader: The original Bury Copper-Nobs are not pictured because three of them were gone and No. 3 was in storage, still awaiting the construction of a glass house.

However, have you heard of... Fairbairn Copper-Nobs?

The Furness Bury bar-frame engines were already so dated on arrival that, eight years later when the F.R. wanted to purchase more, Bury was out of business. To a normal railway this might be a sign to gracefully move with the times. But this is the F.R., lol. They knew what they liked, and Fairbairn's had inherited the blueprints, so Fairbairn's built them a total of 8 more from 1854-1861.

F in the chat for the two poor engines built to this design in 1861. I mean there's nothing inherently wrong with it—witness their useful 40+-year careers—but they definitely never got to be fashionable, lol.

The Fairbairn bar-frame engines were different from the original Burys in various small technical respects that are all too boring to get into (bit bigger and stronger, mostly). The most visible difference is the splashers—as one can see above, the Fairbairns had closed splashers with a handsome brass detail that RA calls "beading."

(The "closed splashers" probably mean you can actually get from the footplate to the buffers without hopping down to the ground, walking, and then hauling yourself back up again. Which is very useful for rail-sanding. Especially in tunnels.)

After Fairbairn's went out of business, the F.R. applied for its new 0-4-0 goods engines from Sharp and Stewart. However, S. & S. produced them from its own coppernob-less, bar-frame-less design, like the COWARDS they were—

Eight of this class were added to F.R. stock over the course of the 1860s. The preserved engines 20 and 25 are of this class, being of the six who were sold to Barrow Hematite Steel Company and rebuilt as saddletank engines between 1870-1873. The above picture shows one of the remaining two, No. 28, the youngest of its class.

The caption observes that 28 does not appear to have any lining. This would make No. 20's current paint job technically inaccurate, but who cares? She deserves it.

Here's a change of pace! There's a lot going on in this picture: a close-up of the tracks (TIL that this is called inside-keyed track), a flatbed, a little old tar tanker, some cattle trucks, and a Sharp 0-4-0ST, presumably built in 1874.

The caption claims that there is a great mystery as to why the engine's buffer appears to carry the number 4 instead of 94, but I think the answer is pretty obvious. She deliberately lost the 9 so that she could pay tribute to her old friend and mentor No. 4, at this point only a couple of years scrapped and its number unceremoniously handed to some new-fangled 0-6-0 who didn't appreciate it.

There is a good bit of discussion (both published and internet) about whether 94 is carrying a special hose as firefighting equipment. I can shed no light on the matter but I certainly prefer to think that she is.

Because it's more fun that way.

A 2-4-0 for ya! No. 58, est. 1871. There seem to me to be several questionable claims in the caption: 1) This is the only place I've seen it claimed that the Bury 0-4-0s were anywhere near regular passenger traffic as late as 1871 (I think RA just forgot the 2-2-2WTs existed), and 2) Given the mention of a new locomotive shed nearby (hey wait is this the same one whose roof D5714 would torch 60+ years later? lol but i'm really asking), I would not be so fast to assume 58 was awaiting shunting duty rather than a passenger train.

I'm going to go ahead and assume this source is right about everything, though. Laughing at the bit that's like yeah, you might think ol' 58 here looks to be in pretty fine nick, but if this were in Scotland in the same era the smokebox hinge and buffers would ALSO be burnished. Just sayin'!

This is an 0-6-0 "Sharpie" from 1866. I don't have much else to say that the caption doesn't: They're cuties, and the location here is close to the original Barrow station (which is where passengers used to have to terminate, before they built Barrow Central).

ok this is going to be an obnoxiously long ask jsyk ahead of time, i have a lot of little things to say/ask aoejrof. 1. this is our-library's main blog!! for context, since im sure youve seen us in your notifs lmao 2. related apologies for digging through so much of your blog we were really curious about you because weve been following you on sonicaspeed for a long time and we wanted to know more about you! 3. related again im about to ask a LOT of questions that youre totally free not to answer if theyre too invasive, but theyre all things were genuinely curious/confused about, so wed like to at least take the opportunity to ask! 4. i really hope you dont mind us jabbering at you like this too much alejfkfn we tend to yap ^^'

first thing were really interested in is how exactly an endogenic system works, talking as a traumagenic did (as far as we know) system, especially one thats partially endo and partially traumatic as you seem to be. in the past weve gone from negative (due to being around people who were very bitter about endogenic systems when we were first figuring ourselves out) to supporting it and knowing full well they exist but not understanding it, and wed like to go to understanding and supporting it, but thats really hard when we dont really have an example and looking things up, as always, leads nowhere.

this is of course a little more personal, but we wanted to ask about your subsystem a little, partially due to the fact that weve begun to form our own and arent totally sure how to handle them yet; i noticed a mention of a satellite subsystem within the solar subsystem? is that a nested subsystem? im both very curious, baffled, intrigued, and wanting to know in case it comes up for us, but either way, id love to know exactly how that organization works exactly!

Endogenic systems have as wide a variety of experiences as traumagenic systems do, so describing how they "work" generally is kind of impossible KWNFWK. The only thing to keep in mind is that endogenic systems and system members form for reasons other than trauma - maybe they were born that way, maybe it's neurodivergence, maybe it's spiritual beliefs, intentional formation, or any number of other reasons! Not all endogenic systems lack trauma or even disorders - You can be a system and then experience trauma which causes problems for you later on. Or you can experience trauma that doesn't cause plurality in you, and then discover or become plural later, too! If you don't know yet about Pluralpedia, it can be confusing to navigate but has tons of info about different system origins, traumagenic and endogenic alike. Plus lots of other info about plurality as well!

We consider our system to be primarily traumagenic, but with many individual endogenic members. Most of our endo members exist as introjects and come from the process of creating or experiencing art - our brain is just naturally inclined to make headmates out of characters we connect with qkdnskcn.

As for our subsystems: Yeah, the Satellite subsystem is nested within the Solar subsystem. Team Solar consists of me (Zephyr) and everyone from my world, including my own headmates from back then. The Satellite subsystem is the Shadow I know from my world and all of his headmates that basically got carried over with him. That includes Mia - his protector and introject of his sister - and some of the Black Arms that hitched a ride. The Satellite subsystem is a classic "system-within-a-system". They experience shifting fronting patterns and stuff like that just like we do generally, sometimes cofronting/coconsciousness too. The Satellite subsystem is traumagenic, and Shadow is considered the host for them. They have protectors, persecutors, trauma holders, etc that revolve around Shadow, rather than the system as a whole or any other particular member. We think this is because they are his alters specifically!

For the most part, we use subsystems as organizational labels first, just to communicate and remember who is related or connected to who. Shared sources is usually the deciding factor for whether we lump headmates together in a subsystem or not. Headmates that are 'related' in some way tend to be more likely to be close to front for us at the same time, if that makes sense? Like loose package deals. The Satellite subsys is probably the closest thing we have to a traditional Subsystem as described by the general plural community, probably because they were a system before entering this one (and so was I actually!).

In another ask, you added the question "What are 'exomemories'?". Sometimes known as 'pseudomemories' (we don't like that term personally for reasons we'll get into), they're memories of things the body didn't experience. "Memories from outside", exo-memory. For us these can manifest as traumatic flashbacks to source moments, or positive memories of our lives before being in this system, or just basic facts about who we are and our home worlds. I have a TON of exomemories. I'm very close to source and care about it a lot! Since you follow our art blog you probably already know how much of our work is based on exomems akdnwkfsnci. We don't like using the term 'pseudomemory' for ourselves because there's nothing 'pseudo-' about them. They feel just as real as any of my memories of this life and shape who I am even more!

Not going to lie - no one tagged me in this lol - but I am doing it .

1. How many works do you have on ao3?

2. What's your total ao3 word count?

Crazy number for me. I know some have literal millions but I can’t believe I’ve written that much in like the last two or three years??

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently Star Trek (TNG/VOY/PIC & some DS9). ER and Criminal Minds more so in the past. But ER I’ll never leave you.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Aster

- my labor of love - no pun intended.

- i WILL finish her (manifest it pls).

A Flame In Your Heart

- going to be honest writing post s3 isn’t something that interests me the most.

- however, this is a cute story and i wish i had some more ideas for it as i feel like i lack direction.

I Should Have Moved Moons For You

- a fic I really should have pre-written before posting but i do have fun with it.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Well…it would have to be either of the ones I killed Beverly in - Last contact or Too Late.

Not sure which is more angstiest?

However, as for a multichap ending that ends the most angstiest and wasn’t written to be a character-death-fic - maybe - A Lot Of Things Can Happen In Two Months. Which sucks cause it’s pretty much canon compliant LOL.

Hmm now I am tempted to write another multichap with a less than happy ending…

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics that have an ‘ending’ are WIPS that I haven’t finished yet lol.

But maybe Our Turn - it’s just Beverly and Jean-Luc enjoying everything wonderful in their lives <3

8. Do you get hate on fic?

Not really - I doubt anyone cares enough lol. But I am ‘fortunate’ that some of the more ‘controversial’ ships I may write have had writers come before me and take the brunt of any crap :(( but they’ve created a lovely sandbox for the rest of us to play in <3

9. Do you write smut?

Not often but I have yeah…and *deep breaths* … I have no idea if I am even acceptable at it LOL. It’s definitely something I sometimes want to add to my fics and lately I’ve been giving in a little.

It’s not my go to thing but yes I have. Including the fusion ER/TNG fic that three people have probably read (but three people I love).

Nope.

No but that would be cool as!

Yes! With my lovely and supportive ER fic buddies ❤️

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Not sure how best to answer this. It is very dependant on my current hyperfixation and I am one of those sapphics that very much is into the woman more than the man in terms of interest in f/m ships…

However, at the moment it’s Beverly/Jean-Luc and I can say I am definitely more invested and interested in Jean-Luc’s character than I have been with other men in f/m ships. So that’s another reason.

But I love to read/write Crusher/Janeway ❤️ and LOVE those characters. Kerry/Sandy too is special to me.

Can honestly say apart from helping me give Emily Prentiss a baby in my fics I never cared that much for any of her ships I wrote (sorry 😭).

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but probably won't?

Probably better I don’t answer this. It stresses me out cause I want them all to be done 😭

I’ll answer with a WIP I never posted which was a dystopian AU with Kerry and Sandy. Field medicine, babies (it’s me so ofc) and friends trying to survive together.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Hmm - I think I can come up with some good ideas. I can be good at description and introspection … probably more than dialogue.

And I am very strong in the art of giving Beverly Crusher lots of babies. And also making her go through angsty stuff. But I make up for that with the babies I think.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Long intricate plots ? I would love to be better as balancing many themes and plot points in one story. I struggle with dialogue sometimes as well.

Also I am very word count preoccupied at times which is a hindrance as a writer. I sometimes really struggle to get anything out in a session then can overcompensate later by writing too much? But honestly either way I just let myself go with the flow these days otherwise I stress about it.

Yeah and I probably need to edit better.

And smut.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Is this controversial?? I don’t have any issue with it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

These are both not what I would consider my best work (idk what that even is) but probably Gone (Ice)fishing or It Takes A Village.

Both were written as gifts and out of my comfort zone (for different reasons) but I am really proud of them both.

But I also love some of my Kerry/Sandy one-shots I did here on this blog. And Aster is definitely a personal accomplishment in terms of length as a writer. I love it too ❤️.

Oh, also - To Build A Home - cause it’s tragic & angsty but also BABY🥹 - it’s just my brand.

The Mysterious Benedict Society Liveblog Season 2 Episode 8 "A Two-Way Street"

Alright, let's just cut to my worst fear: this finale description sounds very final, and I really really hope that this is not the last season and they just couldn't get SQ's actor back or the funds to continue and are ending it right here. If that is what is happening, it's hardly the show's fault, and it won't be the first time a hyper-fixation was struck down prematurely. Who knows. Maybe this time instead of deleting my accounts and vanishing into the night, I'll actually use this account for the next fixation. I already have one that's coming back that I think some of you might like, but that's a subject for another day. I will be sad if this is the last season, but in the event that this episode throws in a cool twist that keeps me invested, I will also be giving an appropriately unhinged rant which I know is why you are all here, so either way everyone wins. On to the episode.

1:00- Ah morning, is Curtain up? Oh yikes, he's gonna wake up with a massive headache after Milligan turned the van like that.

2:00- well well well. Nicholas and Constance please their joy is too much. Wait her name is actually number in this universe? "MOM HAD BEEN BRAVE ABOUT YOUR ABANDONMENT". Okay, side note: your children, grandchildren, nieces/nephews, etc. cannot "abandon" you. You can say they decided to cut contact with you or put up boundaries. But "abandoned", really? You're the adult. Already skeptical of this family. What is with this family's names.

3:00- HAHA- not Jillson/Jackson and Jeffers fighting over authority. I love their sideplot. If the show is cancelled I will happily support their spin-off show. Oooo... "interim director" and he said it so carefully too look at Jeffers throwing fancy titles around. "Self-appointed" oooo burn.

3:20- Awe, he said he's very proud of number 2. I'm glad Nicholas is looking out for her.

4:45- "I'm gaining so much understanding" Yes that's how I feel when I meet my friend's families. Milligan gets it.

5:40- Is Reynie advocating for um... "ending Curtain"? Thank you Ms. Perumal.

6:10- speaking of, there he is fast asleep. What a weird way to wake up. PFT- inspired. "Betrayed" oh calm down Curtain. "that's beneath you" YOU DID EXPERIMENTS ON KIDS CURTAIN. "Away from the yes men" That's what I've been saying!

7:00- It feels so good, but it's bad. Nicholas does have a clear view. Is he overcoming the brain washing? Haha... "it's more like 12 miles" Curtain does do his homework.

8:00- Wait Curtain actually cares... oh no. Well, there you go Curtain. You can escape while the theme song is playing. Maybe you can find the son that you totally forgot about. Unless Nicholas is faking it to see how you react.

9:30- Lol, the mom wants grandkids. Wait "chaotic out there" are they doomsday preppers? Wow, she didn't send letters or answer calls. "new people: terrible prioritizes" YOU JUST WANT HER WORKING THE FARM. Don't like number 2's mom.

11:30- "Can I offer some observations" "mind tricks" lol

12:00- "I need you to wake up" oh Curtain is gonna lose it

12:30- "Everyone perhaps except Constance" wait if she goes back to the house, then we'll have our family reunion, we just need SQ and the whole Benedict crew is there.

13:00- "A lovely 2,000 piece jigsaw puzzle" well that should keep her busy. I love that they are showing the puzzle in the montage.

13:45- "Please I don't know what to do" "Somehow if I could convince you it was good you'd think I was good" oh yikes, this could be the last season. Curtain's redemption arc isn't due for a while. He isn't falling asleep though so he must still be holding something back.

14:50- Wow Constance has done great work on that puzzle. Honestly impressive. She really does have a gift.

15:00- They've arrived! Time for home-alone style traps. I love that the traps didn't work on Jackson and Jillson. They really should be promoted.

16:00- "you tricked me" see now he feels betrayed. "the only way to get through was if you thought you lost me" yikes. Oh, the device worked? That's actually pretty clever. "It changes nothing" "I don't believe you that was real". Awe Nicholas apologized for the blowdart.

17:00- Wow that shot where you think Curtain might try to hug him and he just moves past him to look out the window. "They're here" oh Curtain don't be so ominous only one van got through, wait where did all these people come from.

18:30- "Stand down" "I've been Possibly approaching things the wrong way". Well that is an understatement. "Blinking in code" oh my gosh Jackson. "Please discover who you are": That line was meant for SQ. I wish he was here. Oh dear, he broke them. Oh no, are Jackson and Jillson gonna start a cult? Okay Jeffers, go off.

20:30- SHE NEVER FINISHED THE PUZZLE. NO.

21:00- "Insert an electrode" "well there are worse things" it's nice to see Curtain hasn't changed much. Even as a 'good guy' he keeps his personality. I think he and Constance would get along great.

22:00- Maybe you could restore Constance's happiness by promising a third season. And no, Nicholas you make her happy. "Remember when you broke the Whisperer with your brain, good times" *cuts to Curtain* I love it.

23:20- Insulting people makes Constance happy. Very good Reynie. Get Curtain to admit he's a theater kid. That will do it. OH MY GOSH NICHOLAS' MONOLOGUE, BAH HA HA- Curtain's like "ok Nicky, a bit much".

26:00- "Thank you for saying goodbye before you abandon us again" ma'am please get help for your abandonment issues, do not project them onto children.

26:30- Okay so Curtain is unfreezing his followers. Is he gonna finally see his son again? OR MENTION HIM? HELLO? Honestly, I think Curtain might have also faked (or understated) his redemption since Nicholas faked his brain-washing. And Curtain didn't fall asleep. Don't think I missed that.

27:45- Awe they're wrapping all the little conflicts up. Except SQ's. Yes I'm still mad. Don't play the happy music, that boy could be at the bottom of a well right now. He could be frozen. Well, I guess that doesn't matter because they won a wood-cutting competition and Sticky wrote Reynie a letter.

29:30- YES THEY ADOPTED THE ALPACA. Who knows what happened to SQ, but at least the alpaca made it out ok. Also, Constance's letter is fantastic.

30:00- Is she going to be adopted now? Oh, we're doing this? We're getting Constance's parents? Season 3 let's go!

30:30- "well I look 46" okay Curtain. "joining the society". Perfect, now we can have the Curtain/Constance banner I want- wait. WAIT WHAT. WHAT. WHAT.

Uh oh, looks like the director saw the fourth season of Sherlock and was like "oh I want to do that, but better, like actually develop it. Maybe that will distract from the fact that SQ's actor stormed off the set". THAT's IT?

Well, consider me fully re-invested. I have so so so many thoughts and will be blogging like mad the next few days so be prepared.

But for starters, why is Curtain not in jail? Redemption is nice but he still kidnapped and brain-washed people and ran experiments on children. Maybe I should give an emotional speech to the cops about family and learning lessons next time I get pulled over and they'll let me drive off without a ticket.

Also, is SQ at college? I swear they'll get the actor back for like season 5, and be like "he was in art school the whole time". (I actually have multiple theories on how he comes back into the plot, will be making posts)

2022 Writing Evaluation

thank you for my amazing friend taylor @jbhmalumm for tagging me in this!!! i totally forgot i wrote (even if it's been like half a year yikes) and can actually be tagged in those things so im excited <333

1. number of stories posted on ao3: a whole 3 fics!

2. word count posted for this year: 17,741 words!!

5. story with the most kudos/bookmarks/comments: all three of these categories go to three that's the magic number <3

6. work i’m most proud of (and why): im proud of all of them! just the fact that i actually sat down this year and wrote something AND posted it?!!?!!!! i think that's something to be proud of!

7. work i’m least proud of (and why): i love all my kids!

8. share or describe a favorite review you received: ok so there's this comment @ghost-of-you left on my mashlum fic that just said "I don't think I've ever laughed this much at a fic before. This awesome." and i remember smiling and thinking about that comment all day so thank you anna <3

9. a time when writing was really, really hard: idk a lot of times i found myself really frustrated that i couldn't just sit down and write 5k in a sitting, or i was feeling i wasn't getting the tone right and then tried to compare myself to others? but once i let that go, stopped looking at other fics and just setting myself smaller goals i think made the difference!!

10. a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: the ending scene of malum in the daylight fic!!!! when i started to write that scene i totally planned for it to go in a different direction, a much more funny way (michael finding out calum is a vampire because he found him drinking blood smoothies lol), but as i was writing it the words just flew into a more angsty approach and i liked it so!!! it stayed <3

11. a favorite excerpt of your writing: i still think the delivery of “I need to know, who came first? The chicken or the egg?" and the response after it was incredible on my part <3

12. how did you grow as a writer this year? actually finishing a fic and posting it!

13. how do you hope to grow next year? honestly just hoping to set little goals and maybe write some more, maybe try other fandoms and see how i do!

16. any new wisdom you can share with other writers? literally just write for yourself! i can't even count the amount of times i reread my own fics because it's exactly to my taste!!

17. any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year? there's a song fic i wrote for cashton that is mostly done that i do wish to finish at some point!!!! also coach calum fic would be amazing if i ever finish it so hopefully that!!!! plus not 5sos but i have this idea for a buddie (911) fic that haven't left my mind since i thought of it and im hoping maybe start and finish before they come back from the hiatus!!!

I love how as a fandom, though we ship Jake "Hangman" Seresin with different people, the one thing that we all agree upon is that he is so totally not straight. 😊

(And to those of you who are seeing the connection between Hangman and Phoenix...you are valid and accurate; there was definetly something there that was/had been happening between them...👀)

I was so excited to see Top Gun: Maverick that though I have in fact seen the original many times before, I didn't rewatch it before I went to the theater.

Last night I rewatched it again after seeing TG: M three times (so far!!). I'm embarrassed to admit this but here we go: I totally forgot about the part where they're in the bar and Ice comes over to Goose and Mav and greets Goose by saying, "Mother Goose!" 🥺🤧

It's an important part and means so much to me, especially because of how broken up Ice later is when he's telling Maverick how sorry he is about Goose. 😭

Y'ALL:

This is from a Buzzfeed article (read it in full here: 17 Times "Top Gun: Maverick" References "Top Gun" https://buzzfeed.com/evelinamedina/top-gun-maverick-then-vs-now) and when I read the above I literally screamed out loud because basically, this article is confirming that yep, all of us did indeed see what we saw when it comes Hangman and Rooster. 🤩

Look, interpret this piece of information (that we all knew anyway lol) however you want, just know that I am loosing my fangirl mind right now.

Addtionally, on a somewhat related but also kind of random note, I would like to point out that I personally see Hangman as an Ice-Maverick hybrid because he kind of looks like Ice, but he follows the rules like how Maverick did (or didn't, rather...). Looks aside, I also get Ice vibes after he saved Mav and Rooster at the end of the movie!!!

And Bradley is very much his father's son, but still makes sure to follow the rules, always and of course (as we all saw!) is the first to point out whenever people are being unsafe and leaving their wingman when they aren't supposed to (Ice vibes for Rooster, anyone?? 🥺💙).

My #1 post of 2022

Thinking about how Jake would call Bradley "baby" as a pet name has me going absolutely feral.

Not to mention all of the different ways he can say it and the context of when he uses it.

Just imagine them waking up next to each other and Jake's usually unheard southern accent slips out when he utters, "Morning, baby," because it's still early and he hasn't had time to adjust quite yet.

Or when he gleefully shouts, "Hey, baby!!" from across the room when he sees Bradley again for the first time after either one of them has been away on an assignment.

And of course, when they are in the heat of the moment and Jake pants out, "Yeah, baby, right there, that's the spot."

Yeah. 😌😍

Bradley is Jake's baby for now and for forever. ❤️
