Things I Learnt at a Galentine's Day Event at the Strand Bookstore

The panelists were Sophie Lark, Xio Axelrod, Sara Cate, and LJ Shen, and moderated by KJ Micciche.

Sara Cate's inspo song for Mercy is Dress by Taylor Swift

The most interesting thing Xio Axelrod Googled in thr name of book research was the technicalities of banging in a tour bus bunk bed. LJ Shen's was "how to bury a body".

Sara Cate said the most romantic scene she's written is the wall painting vibrating butt plug scene. Sophie Lark's most romantic scene is when her hero in Stolen Heir has a Caesar-stabbing moment (in that he's stabbed. multiple times. by allies) and the heroine comes back to him when he's on the brink of death and that's how he regains the will to live— it's about the redemptive power of love.

Sara also said that she knew Beau's book (Mercy) was going to be the fourth book so she actually held off on making him truly awful in Praise. I thought that was really interesting because I loved how he was redeemed in his book after being such a shitty ex-boyfriend to Charlie, and I wonder how far she would have taken said shittiness if he wasn't a future hero.

There was a really fascinating conversation on sex positivity in romance novels; Sophie Lark and her husband were raised in a cult that was misogynistic and routinely slut-shamed women. Sara Cate shared an anecdote about how a teacher(!!) told her the more people she had premarital sex with, the more her "paper" would be torn until she'd have nothing but a crumpled up strip of paper to give to her husband on their wedding night. Escaping this kind of purity culture and later writing romance novels with sex-positive characters was their way of reclaiming that part of themselves.
