Iliad Helko
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Character 1 out of 2 for amber virus!)
Iliad seems to show signs of stiff movement from time to time. The mistress seems rather quiet, seeming to bask in the delights of Greek architecture, residing in her own temple. Made by some creatures (yet to be discovered), she seems to however only wander around with that drape over her eye sockets, it raises the question if she can see through it at all. She often walks with her hands resting gently clasped together in front of her mid riff as she drags her tail along the floor making soft scraping sounds as she passes along the empty halls. She wears gold covers for the tips of her clawed phalanges to preserve their sharpness and to avoid damage that cannot be restored.
The amber virus spreads through direct infection through the soul, specifically a bite to the soul. She avoids touch as much as she can. If the infection has taken temporary control she will chase you on all fours, hence the lack of shoes. She will also attempt to gore you with her horns if close enough to your throat. When she opens her mouth an amber liquid shifts around the edges of her mouth, sometimes dripping off. The end of her tail can be used to lacerate or cut in folds of the skin. The pattern on her ribcage resembles the virus, her tongue also seems affected gaining a more shell like texture becoming longer and more flexible. Not to mention the virus has severed her upper and lower jaw completely held by the constant circulating amber as it shifts and unhinges to extreme lengths. The variant infecting Iliad seems to become active from unfiltered light into the eye sockets. Hence the cover she wears on her face. And the fact she practically lives in isolation in her own hidden dimension pocket which she’ll sometimes come out of. She gets over defensive or hyperconscious when someone questions the choice of wearing the curtain over her eye sockets, she is also not fond of the smell of lavender or vanilla, showing a physical reaction to these smells such as hissing, tensing, or even just straight up disposing of the source.
Iliad was originally the ‘lure’ or rather attraction of the ‘Amber horns’ rumoured to be a large creature, reflected in her upper arm markings and vaguely lower arm markings, with a simple expression of the head is seen above the knee cap. This creature was said to be the bringer of light and fertility to the land, growing a bond with this deity creature she eventually became too connected to it, resulting in the turn of the virus infecting her straight from the source, the creature itself. She spent many years trying to fight for control, managing to find the weakness for her variant. Yet she keeps herself isolated as much as possible, sometimes she’ll go into the multiverse but it’s very rare as she knows the risk with this. She’s weary of crowds, given her self-isolation she’s very blunt and stubborn. However she doesn’t mean to be truthfully brutal as she is, due to the virus effecting her mouth she will never deem herself as ‘beautiful’ as she once was. If one was to break through all these walls she put up for herself, they would see just how scared she is.
(This is all I can think of rn lmao)

Live report by David Araneda (words) and Ricardo Santos (images)
SOEN, one of the revelations of the latest decade when it comes to prog rock, visited the Finnish capital two nights ago, after four years of absence in the context of the second European leg of their Lotus Tour. Due to the well-deserved critical acclaim received by their newest record, released last February, this was one of the most expected concerts for progressive rock fans in Finland. Together with the Swedes, we also got the chance to check out the current local prog-sensation WHEEL and the Italian ensemble THE PRICE. Because the concert was organized on a rainy Wednesday evening, people started showing up little by little to The Circus night club, located in the city center of Helsinki.
I arrived on time in order to witness THE PRICE’s show, which was received with a bit of indifference by the audience. The cocky, borderline insulting attitude of the vocalist Axel Capurro, who repeatedly complained at the Finns for being silent, made things a bit awkward. It is understandable that they want to see the audience excited, but they should try to make it happen naturally and not by telling the crowd what to do. They played the best tracks of their album “A Second Chance to Rise”, including highlights such as ‘Stormy Weather’ and ‘Tears Roll Down’. Even though their music was nice, it wasn’t so special for the vocalist to assume that people would go immediately crazy about it.
Things went completely different with the next act. After a short break, WHEEL came to the stage, and even if his vocalist/guitarist James Lascelles is originally from England and addressed the audience in his native language, the band was received very well from the start and they connected immediately with the crowd. Because their bassist Mikko Määttä is currently injured, the talented Jyri Helko replaced him, doing a great job. Although they are a relatively young band with only one full-length album so far (the excellent “Moving Backwards”), they showed confidence, virtuosity and professionalism throughout their set. James mentioned that they almost had to cancel the presentation due to vocal issues, but their overall performance wasn’t affected by that.
They started their show with ‘Lacking’, building slowly the atmosphere with its intricate rhythms. All the members of the band wore black hoods, adding an element of enigma to their performance. They kept their lightshow to the minimum. Next in line was ‘Vultures’, a track that synthesizes the best elements of their music. This song proves that you can write a three-minute prog-rock track without being derivative, while keeping the novelty and complexity. ‘Tyrant’ and ‘Where the Pieces Lie’ kept the energy flowing, preparing everyone for the big finale, which came with ‘Wheel’, a dynamic ten-minute song which worked as an effective display of their musicianship. They are clearly one of the most promising bands in the Finnish prog-rock scene.
When SOEN appeared, the crowd went instantly crazy. The impressive stage presence of vocalist Joel Ekelöf made everyone focus their attention on him. They opened their set with ‘Covent’, one of the finest tracks off “Lotus”, featuring a mesmerizing vocal performance and also great guitar work by Cody Ford. The sound was a bit too loud in the front row, as the bass drums and bass sounded a bit saturated. Otherwise, in the calmer parts the sound was very sharp and clear. Joel pointed out how long it’s been since their last visit to Finland, as they skipped Finland in the Lykaia Tour. They made it up by playing ‘Opal’, which stood out with its gloomy riffs and powerful chorus.
With ‘Rival’, they went back to their latest release, featuring a more modern sound and more aggressive drumming by Martín Lopez, waking up the audience and making them sing along the catchy phrase ‘for all the fire’ at the top of their lungs. ‘Tabula Rasa’ was the only song taken from “Tellurian”, with its angry beginning evolving into playful rhythm patterns. Next in line was one of the highlights of the evening, a brilliant interpretation of the magnificent ‘Lascivious’, which seemed to be the favorite of most people in the audience, including me. It is certainly one of their best tracks and it works perfectly in the live setting. An epic moment to remember for the rest of our lives.
‘Jinn’ calmed things a bit, featuring a softer vocal line and melancholic melodies full of middle-eastern vibes, creating a special atmosphere matched very well by the lightshow. The dramatic way to end the songs added some theatricality to their stripped-down stage setting. ‘Opponent’ brought back the energy, adding contrast to their set. It is a song that summarizes the essence of their current sound, more straightforward and modern. After a short introduction of the band members, they revisited “Lykaika” once again with an inspired rendition of ‘Lucidity’, becoming one of the most emotional moments of the show. I must remark the great contribution of Lars Åhlund, who, in addition to keyboards, guitars, and percussions, did some amazing vocal harmonies with Joel.
‘Martyrs’ was another crowd-favorite, played with great precision and loads of soul, with its intense riffing and drumming, progressing into a catchy chorus which was sung very loudly by the audience. The only thing that kept bothering me was the excessive volume of the low frequencies, which made a bit difficult to enjoy the music during the more intense segments. Before leaving the stage for a brief break, they went all the way back to their first album “Cognitive” with ‘Slithering’, featuring a more raw and darker sound, showing how the band has evolved during the last seven years. It is clear that their current style appeals a wider audience, with a greater potential to become a big international act.
The encore began with ‘Savia’ and its haunting vocals, complex rhythm and catchy chorus, including pitch-perfect harmonies. It stands out as one of the best tracks from their early days. An intense performance of ‘Sectarian’ brought back the modern elements of their music, featuring again plenty of vocal harmonies which sounded just like in the record. The cherry on top was the beautiful ‘Lotus’, interpreted with a lot of emotion and sensibility. I still remember when I first listened to this song in the bus on a dark winter day on my way home from work, and it still manages to move me the same way every single time. A true masterpiece and the perfect way to end the evening.
As usual, getting out of The Circus took quite a while because they insist in hiring four guys at the cloakroom to return hundreds if not thousands of jackets. Regardless of that, everything else went smoothly, people were in a great mood (except for the singer of THE PRICE, who maybe should work on his modesty). WHEEL and SOEN were a fantastic combo and I wish they keep touring together and releasing amazing albums like they did this year. Maybe next time I’m going to take a bit of distance from the stage since the bass was so loud. All in all, it was a great evening for prog-heads in Helsinki and a night to remember for the years to come.

Seeking God
Seeking God
We find a paradox when we speak of seeking God, for we are told that no one seeks after God and yet it is said that we should seek Him. “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God” (Romans 3:10-11). Paul is reiterating the words of David from Psalm 14:1-3: “The fool says in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.” While the fool lacks the sound judgment or good sense to seek after God, the children of man have purposely become corrupt by turning their hearts away from God. Regardless of the reason, foolishly or purposely, they all lack the understanding that might enable them to seek after God.
“And he (God) made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for in him we live and move and have our being …” (Acts 17:26-28). Men should seek God so that they may find him, but do they seek after Him? In this case ‘should’ could mean that it’s man’s duty to seek Him. It would be wise to seek after God in the sense that seeking Him is sound advice. However, in this instance, there is the possibility that some who seek after him do not find him. So often man lacks the common sense to do what he ‘should’ do. So how does one seek and find God?
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). In consideration of what Jeremiah writes, it’s possible to seek God but not with your whole heart. Without an earnest undivided whole-hearted seeking, God will not be found. A person’s entire heart and mind must be fixed and focused on God alone in order for him to be found. Since “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) So often man won’t seek after God; his heart is divided, hard and unwilling, swollen with pride. Without a change of heart is it possible to seek God with all your heart? No. One needs a new undivided willing heart. “And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them” (Ezekiel 11:19-20).
David instructs his son Solomon to “know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever” (I Chronicles 28:9). David lectures Solomon with his perception that in order to know God, he must be sought; but Solomon’s seeking after God is conditional – “if” he seeks after him. Since God searches and knows man’s mind, heart and plans, “if” Solomon seeks after God, it must be with a whole heart and willing mind.
“Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near …” (Isaiah 55:6). Here it’s implied that there is a time when God cannot be found; he may be far away from the seeker. Seeking God is time sensitive. There is a danger in seeking God half-heartedly in one’s own time. Seek him before it is too late; “For he says, in a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Time is of the essence; one should not delay seeking Him. “For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you” (Psalm 86:5).
Above all else, the seeker must have a willing heart and believe that he will find God. “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who (earnestly/diligently) seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). There’s a difference between a half-hearted curious seeking and an earnest pursuit of God. Seek him earnestly, energetically and draw near to him in faith believing. Can someone who persistently seeks God find Him? Yes, because of his love for us. “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me” (Proverbs 8:17).
Can those who don’t seek him ever find him? What would cause someone to find God if he never had the desire or inclination to seek him out? “Then Isaiah (Isaiah 65:1) is so bold as to say, I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me” (Romans 10:20). Wasn’t it Jesus who said, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” (John 6:44). Our English word “draw” is from the Greek word helko. The Greek meaning carries with it the idea that God’s drawing is coercing; an attractive power which drags, pulls and persuades one to come. It’s not like a simple whistle to draw someone’s attention, “hey, come over here.”
So then, there are those who seek him and don’t find him while there are those who don’t seek him and find him. But no one can seek after God and come to Jesus unless the Father draws them to him. So why does God draw people to Himself? Perhaps it is God who is really the ultimate seeker? “But the hour is coming and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him” (John 4:23). God seeks people who desire to truly worship Him with thanksgiving and praise. God as a loving Shepherd seeks out his sheep. “For thus says the Lord God: ‘Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out” (Ezekiel 34:11).
“And someone said to him, Lord, will those who are saved be few? And he said to them, strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able” (Luke 13:23-24). Many seek who are not able to enter because they fail to make every effort to enter through the narrow door. Seeking other doorways and pathways to salvation outside of Jesus Christ is a fruitless endeavor; Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9). Christ Jesus is the only entrance-way into God’s kingdom. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). “Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice” (I Chronicles 16:10).
Whether it’s God who seeks after man or man who seeks after God, they are both parallel truths. “But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, ‘where are you?’ And he said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself” (Genesis 3:9-10). God seeks man out of love while man seeks God in his shame. Regardless of your circumstances, “seek the Lord and live…” (Amos 5:6).
