There are a lot of What-ifs when it comes to jason todd. What would've happened if bruce didn't take jason in? what if jason was taken in by selina and became stray? what if jason didn't die?what if jason was found before the lazarus pit? but one that i don't see at all is what if jason didn't come back and just stayed with the All Caste?

The Lost Days arc would go about the same as in canon (without the talia thing because ew), but after the car bomb thing doesn't pan out jason just starts looking into the batfam more. He sees his dad for the first time in years. He forgets everything and considers coming back home.

But then he finds out how his death was handled

Of course he'd still be pissed off about tim becoming robin, but more than that bruce and dick spun it so people though tim was the second robin. Jason's whole identity was usurped, and was prompted by alfred of all people. Add to that the memorial case and the victim blaming, as well as him not having a memorial in titans tower and tim talking shit about him every chance he gets and jason starts to lose hope. But these things could be fixed! These could all be explained away as emotionally incompetent people compartmentaling in order to get over their grief! right?

Then he finds the footage of dick killing the joker for tim. Sure, the joker taunted dick using jason's memory, but it was him thinking tim was dwad that really set him off. The final nail in the coffin would be bruce reviving the joker. Jason now has proof that 1. tim was indeed his replacement, and 2. Bruce's morals and dick's clean hands are worth more than his mangled corpse.

He scraps all of his plans because now he KNOWS that bruce would never kill the joker for him. Disillusioned with bruce and gotham in general, he sneaks into arkham and pits a bullet in the joker's skull, then goes to the all caste for training. If they didn't care about him, why should he care about them?

I think ducra would be less wary about training jason in this au, since his drive for revenge had dissipated, and he wouldn't "bring great evil into this world."

Since ducra wouldn't really show favouritism to jason, since he isn't as much of a flight risk or a time bomb, i think his and essence's relationship would go way better than in canon. Their main points of contention were jason leaving the caste and ducra's favouritism, and without those 2 factors, their relationship could actually flourish.

Due to the all blades being linked to the soul, it would make sense if the caste taught soul magic. This would make jason a way better fighter than any baseline vigilante or assassin. Maybe he could use his abilities to hide his body language to avoid shiva and cass' ability? The all caste doesn't get massacred here, so he learns how to really socialise, talk with people with different experiences, so he could occasionally go back to the alley or the hill to reconnect with his old friends, like dana or numbers, since he wouldn't push people away like in canon.

The untitled wouldn't be as big of a threat as they were in RHatO since there are way more people available, and jason being super trained, so maybe jason would adopt a new vigilante identity to help people on a more personal level. He considers going by Red Hood, as a taunt to the man that killed him, but he doesn't like it. It's a remnant of a past he'd rather forget. Maybe he'd go by cardinal, but he doesn't want to be associated with a bird anymore. I think marauder would be a really good name for him, a man who goes around looking for things to steal and people to fight.

You can have him interact with some justice league dark members, especially Constantine since I really like their dynamic, and he could deal with hellspawns since he wields the allblades now.

JayEssence is a rarepair, which is a shame since i think these 2 could have a really interesting dynamic if written properly, so I'd probably go with that as the endgame ship, but you could work in so many of his ships. JayRose? childhood friends on the titans who reconnected after jason studied under slade for a bit. JayEddie? same thing but they reconnect in hell. Jaytemis? they could run into eachother during a mission and they'd recognise death anywhere. enemies to reluctant allies to lovers. JayDana? classic childhood friends to lovers. The possibilities are endless

There seem to be many curses the universe has cast upon Willis Todd.

Being always just a little too late is apparently one of them.

A little too late to give Catherine more time. A little too late to be a better dad to Jason.

A little too late to save Jason.

His side still burns in agony with every movement he makes, slowing him down, no matter how hard he tries to push through it. He is losing precious seconds. Precious seconds that he can't loose. He needs them. He needs them to be in time.

He needs them to not be too late for the second time.

Damn the Bat, damn the Joker, damn the both of them. Willis had had the shot, he had been so close, but of course, the Bat had just managed to get there in time to save the monster once again. Not that Willis is even surprised by it, anymore. Like calls to like, after all. Willis just wishes that Jason hadn't needed to get tangled into that whole mess.

He wouldn't have, if it wasn't for the Bat. Not that Willis could blame anyone else but himself for it. If he had been there, the Bat wouldn't have gotten his hands on Jason.

He should've started on the Bat. Put out the power that insists on keeping the flame burning.

It's too late for it.

Willis feels the explosion a moment before he hears it. It's a rumble through the air and then the rush of noise arrives on its tail, and then the fire and smoke is rising as a tower against the darkened sky.

He's never going to make it in time.

Still, he keeps going.

Still, he counts every second in his head, every strangled breath he takes as he pushes himself towards the end of the timeline.

When Willis arrives there, there's nothing but destruction left.

He keeps going, still.

He doesn't know why he keeps going, anymore. He's never going to be in time, after all, since he is Willis Todd, and he is always a little too late.

Still he keeps going.

He remembers the time the power had went out from the apartment. There had been a flash of a lightning, a loud bang as the powerline had been cut, and then just darkness all around.

Jason had been scared of the dark, back then, and he had woken up at the noise and found himself all alone in the darkness, and by the time Willis had made his way to the bedroom and scooped him up, he had been crying his little heart out. The only thing keeping him calm had been Willis clinging to him just as hard as he had been clinging to Willis, with his tiny fingers gripping onto the front of Willis' shirt with the strength of a giant.

He's not sure why he remembers it right now.

Perhaps to remind himself that he had once had everything.

It doesn't leave him alone. He keeps hearing Jason cry, crying out for him, crying out for his dad to save him, save him from the scary thing all around him, and he wonders who Jason had called out for during his last moments.

If he had screamed dad, had it been him he had called for anymore?

Willis looks around. There is nothing but destruction around him.

"Jason?" He calls.

He keeps hearing his son's cries.

"Jason!" He cries, he cries, he cries, right to Willis' ear and inside his head and inside his heart where Jason still lives, all this time and always will.

Cries for his dad who is never there and when he is, it's always too late.

He hears something.

Later he cannot tell if he actually did hear something then, but it had been real at that moment, and it had been enough.

Enough for Willis to run towards it, every pain in his body forgotten, and drop on to the smoldering ground and put his hands into the smoking ruins and start digging.

He doesn't know what keeps giving him the strength to continue. It is something almost primal, something that comes right from his core. He thinks it's desperation.

He thinks it's love.

The gloves on his suit keep the heat away as he pushes his hands deeper into the destruction. He would've done so even with his hands bare.

He digs and digs, deeper and deeper, like he is digging into a grave, hoping that the body in the coffin would miraculously still be breathing like in all of his dreams and nightmares.

He digs and digs, deeper and deeper into the destruction, until he finds Jason.

Jason isn't crying when Willis finds him.

He is completely silent, covered in smoke and dust blood, laying still like bodies lay in their graves.

Willis should leave him be. It is unbecoming to disturb the dead.

He can't. Jason doesn't belong here, buried amongst all the destruction. No, Jason belongs somewhere soft and beautiful, like he has always deserved to belong.

Willis is his father. It is his duty to bring him there.

Jason is no longer the newborn, the baby, the small child he had been the last time Willis had held him. He is a man now, all things considered.

None of those things matter. It is all the same, as Willis pulls Jason into his arms.

There he is.

His Jason. His boy. His little prince.

Willis would've done anything to get to hold him again, but now that he is here, he wonders if his wishes are curses, too.

There is so much dust and blood on Jason's face. Willis brushes it away. His hand leaves streaks on Jason's skin, the imprints of the texture of his glove evident in the marks. That's not right. He pulls his glove from his hand and tries again. His hand is covered in dust and blood now. That's better. Willis should be the one covered in it, after all, not Jason.

There is smoke in the air. Willis finds that he doesn't care, anymore. He removes his mask and and buries his face in Jason's hair. It smells like smoke and dust and blood. He doesn't care. He holds Jason close and he cries.

He still remembers Jason drawing his first breath. It had been a raspy little thing, followed by another, louder, stronger one.

He remembers it when Jason draws in a breath. A raspy, little thing. Then there is another, louder, stronger one.

Willis stops breathing.

Another breath. He can feel Jason shifting in his arms with it. Another one. Willis doesn't dare to move, to look, to do anything, so the spell doesn't break and plummet him back to the grim reality.

Another breath. Willis can't take it anymore. He has to see.

Jason's eyes are not open, but he is breathing. Small, raspy breaths, that all seem to be a struggle for him. There is new, fresh, crinsom blood pouring out on top of the old blood and dust.

Willis needs to-

He needs to get Jason out of here.

"C'mon." He pulls Jason even closer in order to climb to his feet and not lose his hold on him. "Let's go, Jase."

He steps over the destruction around them, hurries through the smoke still rising in the air.

There are fingers grasping onto the front of his suit.

"D-a..a." Jason is barely able to get the sound out. His fingers are only just able to hold on to Willis. "D..aa..d..."

"I'm here." He holds onto Jason hard enough for both of them. "I'm here. Let's go home."

He doesn't have a home, anymore, but it doesn't matter. He might not have a team anymore, either, but it matters even less.

He has Jason.

That's all that matters.

Okay so Rimmer's middle name being Judas *does* make sense in the context of traditional Christian beliefs because he is hated by his parents, his father, from the start. What better middle name to call the child your wife had through the betrayal of adultery than that of a man infamous for betraying a person considered a savior in your religion? Arnold is marked from the beginning, Judas is destined to be damned, etc. etc.

But then we get the episode "Lemons" and we learn that Rimmer's middle name actually has a positive connotation in his mother's religion, which is why she named him that. And that's odd, right? Rimmer's mother, who seems to have as much contempt for him as his father does, who makes it clear she prefers her other sons more, who openly tells him she wants to "sue the sperm that made" him, apparently didn't name him after a reviled figure in her faith, but a revered one.

I'm not too inclined to believe that she harbored any sort of secret affection for him- though, if she ever did, she might have been forced to hide it in the face of her husband's dislike for this child that isn't his; I doubt he was much better as a husband than he was as a father. Was it a positive name given to Arnold to keep up appearances? Perhaps his brothers didn't get the name first because their father decided on their names (which seems likely to me, given how controlling his nature seems) but he cared so little for Arnold that he left his naming to his wife? Maybe the name was an act of aggression/defiance, a dig at him from his wife? She probably had to give up or tone down her faith to take on his; the name might possibly serve as a reminder of the difference/division between them- the kind that could drive her to have her affairs.

y’know. with toranosuke being a hope’s peak graduate, successful businessman, and the eventual goddamn prime minister. did takaaki ever grow up with the mentality of him needing to be the most perfect successor of toranosuke’s legacy drilled into him?? i mean, he must have.

i think him going into law enforcement and investigative work instead of business and/or politics was a big act of rebellion for takaaki. based on that conversation they have in udg about him, he was already a cop before the scandal. so it’s not like he couldn’t follow in toranosuke’s foot steps. it sounds like he actively chose not to. maybe it’s because he hated that world and what it turned his father into, or maybe it’s because he felt like he wouldn’t be a good fit to begin with (maybe the fact that he himself never got accepted in hope’s peak was a clear indicator of that). either way, good for him. still, must have put a big strain on his and his father’s relationship, if there was ever a good one to begin with.

do you think toranosuke kept telling his son how much of a disappointment he was for not wanting to carry on his legacy? how the glory that comes with the ishimaru name will die with toranosuke and it’ll be takaaki’s fault it can’t go on? of course that sentiment will change once it’s revealed just how corrupt toranosuke is. takaaki might have a few choice words to say about that, let me tell you. and now it’s takaaki’s job, the one that miraculously didn’t let him go after the news broke out, that’s keeping them afloat. how ironic.

also. i wonder how takaaki felt watching kiyotaka grow up and eventually want to become prime minister like toranosuke. of course, his reasons for becoming prime minister are different. and what he wants to accomplish with that position is different. but he still can’t shake that bad feeling in the back of his mind. still, he knows kiyotaka. he knows that he’s a good and smart kid. so he can’t help but also feel some hope that he reaches his goals. at the end of the day, that’s his child. and he’s going to try to support him to the best of his ability. still, kiyotaka being accepted into the same school that launched toranosuke’s career feels like both a good and bad omen.
