#LIBRE Action
Text
Daniel Marans at HuffPost:
LANGHORNE, Pa. — In a hotel conference room a little over 20 miles northeast of the Philadelphia venue where the two major parties’ presidential nominees were set to debate hours later, a conservative group was preparing to rally its supporters Tuesday morning behind a Republican candidate locked in a tight battle for Pennsylvania votes. No, the candidate w,as not former President Donald Trump. Americans for Prosperity Action, or AFP Action — a libertarian-leaning conservative group funded by the Koch network of conservative donors — and its Latino outreach arm, Libre Action, were instead holding a canvass kickoff event for Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund manager and Gulf War veteran engaged an uphill battle to unseat U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.). “We’re fighting for our American dream — the American dream that is slipping away from us,” Jennie Dallas, the Harrisburg-based strategic director of the affiliated Libre Initiative, told the multiracial crowd of staff members and paid canvassers clad in light blue organizers T-shirts. “And we know that David McCormick knows that.”
AFP Action’s Tuesday event in the heart of suburban Bucks County — one of the most contested counties in a critical swing state — offers a window into what a non-Trump-aligned right looks like in 2024. It means waging campaigns more focused on tax cuts and deregulation than on mass deportation or populism, and focusing on Senate and House races with more conventionally conservative candidates. A win for McCormick, who is considered far more of an underdog than GOP Senate challengers in Montana and Ohio, would virtually ensure Republican control of the Senate come November. While Democrats have a 51-49 edge in the chamber now, they are certain to lose West Virginia and their best pickup opportunities are long shots. GOP control of the Senate could prove especially critical for conservatives if Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris defeats Trump in the White House contest, according to Emily Greene, a senior adviser to Americans for Prosperity Action who runs the group’s Pennsylvania operations.
[...] Shaping — and, more recently, surviving — changes in the Republican governing coalition and policy agenda are nothing new for Americans for Prosperity and its political spending arm, AFP Action. But the Koch network — as AFP/AFP Action, The Libre Initiative/Libre Action, and their affiliate partners are often known — now finds itself in an extended period of ideological exile from the highest levels of Republican power. AFP opposes Trump’s trade tariffs, has a much more moderate approach to immigration policy than Trump and, unlike Trump himself, continues to defend the bipartisan sentencing reform bill he signed in 2018. Americans for Prosperity’s surviving founder, the oil and manufacturing billionaire Charles Koch — who co-created the group with his late brother, David Koch — has made his aversion to Trump abundantly clear. AFP Action decided not to endorse a candidate in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, dedicating its federal resources to electing Republicans to Congress. And in June 2023, the Kock network announced that it had raised $70 million to help the Republican Party move away from Trump. When Trump eventually emerged as the Republican presidential nominee this year, despite AFP Action’s $31 million super PAC spending on primary opponent Nikki Haley’s behalf, the group once again pivoted to Congress.
[...] To American progressives, Charles and David Koch were once the country’s chief ideological villains. They bankrolled the tea party movement, which gave birth to a hard-line faction of congressional Republicans committed to obstructing then-President Barack Obama’s policy agenda. But while many rank-and-file tea party activists were actually more concerned about immigration than their budget rhetoric would suggest, and welcomed Trump’s nativist program with open arms, the Kochs — and the cadre of right-wing libertarian activists and intellectuals they cultivated — were not ready to make the jump.
With programs like The Libre Initiative and Libre Action, the Koch network is also betting that appeals to Latino voters’ pocketbooks and interest in upward mobility would be more effective than Trump’s personality-centered populism — regardless of what polling suggests about his inroads with Latino voters. The Libre Initiative has, for example, argued that the Biden administration’s attempts to make it harder to classify workers as independent contractors would “hurt Latino workers,” since half of Latino workers fall under this category. “They’re opening up, and they’re seeing what’s most important to us now is our prosperity,” said Dallas, the strategic director. “It’s about being able to prosper in America.” At the same time, Libre’s moderate rhetoric on immigration, which combines calls for strict border enforcement with support for legalizing Dreamers and other bipartisan reforms, also hearkens back to the time period after Republicans’ loss in the 2012 presidential election, when the GOP began looking at softening its stance on immigration to appeal to more Latino voters.
The Koch Brothers, determined to stay in the GOP apparatus of influence, are focused on the #PASen race in a quest to flip control of the Senate.

This is for the DB fans, Indie fans, and all 6 Kinnikuman fans on this site.
My homebrew Matchup Idea: Kinnikuman vs. Juan Aguacate
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Both are mask wearing, pro wrestling heroes who belong in a superhuman class of there worlds (Chojin and Luchadores)
-Both started out as practical nobodies who's dream was to become one one of said superhuman wrestlers while living in a less than ideal house named after themselves (Kinnikuman was considered the worst superhero in the world and lived in a shack attached to a public restroom (The Kinniku House) and Juan had his dreams broken of being a luchador and lived in a tequila distillery Casa de Juan))
-Both wear special masks that hold special properties (Kinnikuman's mask is a family tradition and if he lifts it up his face produces a magical light nicknamed the "Kinniku Face Flash" while Juan's mask is a magical artifact that allows him to switch between the World of the Living and the World of the Dead)
-Both have a large variety of enhanced wrestling moves that consist of powerful wrestling techniques and more absurd moves (Kinnikuman has awesome moves like the "Kinniku Buster" and the "Kinniku Driver" while also having moves like "A$$ Cheek Scissors" and "Trunks Driver") (Juan has super powered moves like "Rooster Uppercut" and "Frog Splash" but also has absurd moves like "Fresh Breath" or "Dashing Derp Derp")
-Both learned their techniques from legendary masters (Kinnikuman learned his moves from Prince Kamehame while Juan learned his moves from Uay Chivo)
-...I will add more connections later.

The Luchador: 1000 Fights of El Fuego Fuerte has lucha libre action, undead Aztec vampire women, and urban fantasy adventures in Mexico City. This is my review.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, I like to wait a little bit before I review certain audio dramas. I want to make sure they don’t pull out any sudden surprises right as I’ve finished the review. However, sometimes there is an audio drama that just demands to be reviewed. No, I’m not talking about when people ask me to review their shows. What I means is that I listen to a show, and I know that I have to share it with everyone as soon as possible. Such is the case with The Luchador: 1000 Fights of El Fuego Fuerte.
In Mexico City, generations of masked wrestlers, known as luchadores, have been the champions of the people. From the noble tecnicos to the jeering rudos, these athletic whip-smart warriors set aside their rivalries of the ring to keep their city safe from the dangers of this world, and beyond. Of all the luchadores, of all the ages past, none were as brave or as strong as El Fuego Fuerte: The Might Champion of Mexico City. These are his battles. These are the 1000 Fights of El Fuego Fuerte, The Lachador.
Series creator Daniel Valero Fletcher says that The Luchador was largely inspired by lucha movies from the 1970s. Admittedly, most of my exposure to lucha libre has come via cartoons. However, I thought that The Luchador was awesome, and I had a great time listening to it. Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar with lucha libre, that won’t effect your enjoyment of this audio drama.
In many ways, you can think of El Fuego Fuerte and his fellow tecnicos as, basically, superheroes. As with any good superhero, El Fuego adheres to a strict moral code. In this case, the rule of lucha libre. For example, during a car chase, El Fuego Fuerte refuses to shoot at the pursuers, for a tecnico is never the first to introduce a foreign object to the match.
Of course, ever superhero needs villains For season one, El Fuego Fuerte faces off against undead Aztec vampire women known as cihuateteos. They are actual creatures from Aztec Mythology, and are said to be the spirits of women who died in childbirth. There’s a part where El Fuego pleads with the cihuateteos, and tells them that they are mighty warriors. Aztec women who died in childbirth received the same funeral rights as men who died in battle. The Aztecs viewed the act of giving birth as rescuing a hostage from enemy territory. So, El Fuego wasn’t wrong to call them warriors.
Each season also brings the opportunity to win tickets to real life wrestling matches. This is part of El Fuego Furte’s Luchador Crime Club. At the end of each episode, a secret word is revealed. You then email the word to The Luchador’s email address, which you can find on the website, and you are entered for a chance to win the tickets.
Season 1 was an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to see what future season have in store for us.
Have you listened to The Luchador: 1000 Fights of El Fuego Fuerte? If so, what did you think?

Writing Weapons (7): Unarmed Combat (Hand-to-Hand Fighting)
In a fight situation with no weapons, characters will stick with the kind of fighting they're familiar with: grappling or striking.
Grappling
Martial arts: judo, wrestling aikido, jiu jitsu, sambo, lucha libre, glima
Suitable for: entertaining fight scenes
Aim in lethal fight: chock or strangle
Words to use: grapple, wrestle, twist, pull, pin, roll, throw, toss, squeeze, press, chock, strangle
Holding the opponents down to the floor is called a "pin"
Striking
Martial arts: boxing, kick-boxing, karate, muay thai, capoeira, taekwondo
Suitable for: entertaining or gritty fights
Aim in lethal fight: blow to head
Words to use: strike, hit, box, kick, punch, chop, slap, kick, chop, hammer, pound
Mixing Martial Arts
Some martial arts combine grappling and striking techniques.
A skilled martial artist is probably an expert in eiher striking or grappling, but also has basic skills in the other.
Easier to stick with one group for one character - the hero's friends can complement each other if they have different martial art backgronds!
Investing a Fantasy Martial Art
Spiritual Elements connected to the general magic/religious system of your story world.
Mental Focus that allows the martial artist to amplify the effectiveness of attacks.
Small rituals, like bowing to the guru before and after every fight to obtain some kind of "blessing"
Restricted admission to pretigious martial arts academies
Specialist techniques that require combining physical action with spells, or a symbolic act that activates magic.
Exams: students must prove themselves through a series of tough (life threatening) tests to obtain access to the most important lessens of the practice.
Special garmetns
Secret codes between members
Winning Factors
Skill - the most important. A skilled fighter can take on someone who is much larger than them, but unskilled.
Size
Ruthlessness
