This - Maria isn't the one that died, but she knows that Shadow watched the real one bleed out. If she was capable of crying to Sonic, she would have, but she wasn't. So she was calm instead. Numb and not feeling much, empty and tinny and she knows that as soon as Shadow walks into the small apartment she's been staying at — where Sonic had told her to wait, I'll find him, you should rest in the meantime, he'd been scared of the empty he could see, she thinks — that she won't be calm anymore.

She's right. The door opens. Her eyes widen and she's staring at the person who is not her brother — who her heart knows is her family — because his sister died and he watched, and she's scared. But not the way she'd been before. Her lips part. She stands suddenly, takes a step towards him, then sits back down. She says, "I'm sorry," then winces. She is, but that isn't what she wants to say.
