If "Animaniacs" was featured in "Lego Dimensions", I would think the characters and environment would be cel-shaded. The characters from that show would be NPCs such as Mr. Plotz, Ralph the Security Guard, Hello Nurse, Dr. Scratchansniff, The Mime, and whoever else could easily be converted into Lego figures without issues. Not surprisingly, Yakko, Wakko, and Dot would be the only playable characters for this world, with Yakko having a level either based on an episode from the show, or a completely original story (Leave a comment for suggestions).

Dot: ♪Everything is awesome. Everything is cool, when you're cute just like me.♪
(For Dot's rant about her being the only cute one for "Lego Dimensions", I wasn't sure which attractive or cute character should be with Dot when she says her rant, aside from Blossom and Bubbles from "The Powerpuff Girls", Jenny from "My Life as a Teenage Robot", Gizmo from "Gremlins", Unikitty from "The Lego Movie", or even the "MAD!" version of Starfire. Feel free to comment your suggestion who you think Dot would say her rant to, or if there's a way to have Dot interact with those characters differently.)

[Review] Starlink: Battle for Atlas (NS)
An Ubisoft open world... in space! Also Star Fox is there!
Lylat Wars is one of my childhood favs, so I'll play anything if they put Star Fox in it. It just so happens that the Switch version of this open world toys-to-life game included a bunch of Star Fox side content as an extra, so here we are. Now it's taken me a few years to recover from Star Fox Zero, but the characters are handled very well here, enough for me to open my heart to them again.
At the very tail end of the Skylanders/Lego Dimensions/Disney Infinity craze, when shops were cutting back on the shelf space they had reserved for plastic figure after plastic figure of dubious usefulness, Ubisoft decided to launch their own entry in this space... for some reason. This being a customisable space ship game, their implementation involves large ship models that attach to a controller mount. The ships then have slots where different weapons and pilots can be attached, and each component can be swapped on the fly depending on the situation. In practice this is clunky and cumbersome, but luckily the physical models are entirely optional. Instead you can buy the components digitally and switch them around in a menu, and I was pleased to score a version off the eShop that included all wave 1 components at a good discount.
Locking weapons that have situational usefulness, or suit your playstyle, behind a purchase feels a bit scummy; especially when I stuck to just four of the 27 available (double gatlings and double missile volleys). Ships are helpful to have a handful of, as they essentially act as extra lives. The pilots are more understandable as optional DLC, but you do need ones from certain factions to unlock global upgrades and I think questlines. So there's a big FOMO component that feels exploitative, but it does make extra purchases feel helpful in-game. Beyond the "digital deluxe" set I also got the Star Fox team pack that adds Falco, Slippy, and Peppy to the base game's Fox (plus a new questline), and the monkey-like pilot Startail because she looked cool... sadly she had an annoying voice (she's not alone), but I still used her and Falco for most of the game thanks to their abilities.
But how does Starlink actually play? Funnily enough it feels a lot like a follow-up to Star Fox 2, Argonaut's SNES sequel that Nintendo cancelled then finally released 22 years later. You have a big star system map with various planets, where the baddies spread to over time. Strategy elements are present but light, where most of the progress comes from the player's direct action. Most of your time is spent ranging over planet surfaces, doing tasks and activities that get you resources and push back the army of robots. These build towards climactic battles with space battleships which you fly inside to destroy (again, very like Star Fox 2). Then follows much rinsing and repeating: this is an open world game, after all.
On the surfaces your ship becomes a sort of hover-speeder. I had more fun with the planet-bound sections than the space stuff, mainly because there's a much greater density of things to do there, and movement and combat is also more manageable when it's constrained by gravity and dimensions. Special mention must be made of how almost seamless it is to transition between ground and space by simply flying up; especially impressive on the Switch which handled the whole thing remarkably well, only chugging when there was an abundance of enemies on screen. The other platforms probably have better overall performance, frame rate, etc., but Star Fox is the winning draw (the other platforms don't have any equivalent extra content of this sort either).
Anyway, in the first few hours you'll get an idea of the loop: zipping around, building up outposts to get map information and resources, and fighting enemies to capture points of interest. All of this builds up a planetwide meter that represents your control vs. the evil alien robot whatevers. I settled into this groove and found it quite fun, never getting too bored of it, although this may vary with your tolerance for repetition. A scant few sidequests can give you some different things to do (and let you hear more voice lines from the actors other than the very oft-repeated expositionary chatter) but a lot of the time it's the ol' open world grind.
The plot is your standard YA sci-fi stuff, not much to write home about. The main team, a set of largely unlikable human schmoes, have uplifted themselves with alien technology to help an alien buddy, and in medias res arrive in the Atlas system. There's some uncomfortably heavy colonial vibes here, as the planets are all some variety of wilderness teeming with settlers, explorers, prospectors, and bandits, and your role as outsiders is uniting these folk under your banner—ostensibly to fight some monster guy and his robot army—and make big decisions about how the system is run before presumably jetting off again after the credits roll. Hmm.
The personal stories of the characters, especially the alien friends you make in Atlas, were the highlight for me, although I feel like they aren't always introduced effectively. As both a game where characters can be spawned in any time from the start and one with some open-ended elements, developments can feel abrupt and the pacing uneven. The Star Fox team and their story is actually integrated very well, although Wolf as the antagonist of this sidestory was, I feel, acting quite out of character from what I would expect. I see him as an amoral mercenary, while here he's set up as a would-be galactic conqueror. Ah well.
Otherwise the Star Fox stuff is excellent: you get a spiffy Starlink version of the Arwing, there's some nice covers of classic music tracks, and the team chatter is top-notch (again, when it's not just open world exposition). The voice actors have mostly carried over either from their original Lylat Wars appearances in a few cases, or the recasts that have stuck since the 3DS remake, and they nail it, especially because they're not just doing weird alternate takes on a reheated script (Zero still hurts my soul so much...). The team are integrated into prerendered cutscenes and there's unique events and missions, plus having them as an addition only makes the overall roster stronger. It's not a full new Star Fox game, but it's pretty much the next best thing. My only complaint is having the characters still trapped in this Lylat Wars/Zero-era setting, continuing the writing-out of Krystal, Sauria, Panther, the Aparoids, everything that Command introduced, etc... but I guess that wasn't really Ubisoft's decision. It's better than nothing, I suppose.
Anyway, Starlink was a pretty good time. As long as you resign yourself to spending more than the normal cost of a game to get a full experience. And you don't think too hard about the themes of the setting. And you don't mind a bit of open world repetition, or the uneven weapon balance, or that obnoxious influencer kid who's on the team for some reason. But let's not focus on the negative; there's a lot to like here. It's a cool sci-fi space game that integrates planet surfaces well, the core gameplay loop is solid and satisfying, and it has a very good crossover with my favourite rail shooter series. I wouldn't get my hopes up for a sequel though, as the retail toys underperformed and five years later the developer is now making Watch Dogs and Far Cry games (as if Ubisoft didn't have enough of those) or assisting on every other Ubisoft release.

Billy & Teddy Games!
I’ve had two posts now about defunct games featuring Billy & Teddy as well as the rest of the Young Avengers so I wanted to talk about some that were still playable!
Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 -
You play as Kate, Billy, Teddy or America in simplified minifigure form! Billy & Teddy even have a fun side quest about tracking down mother and saving the dimension from her again. With some fun voice acted dialogue about how Teddy didn’t like being a chair!
Marvel Future Fight -
Future Fight is a movie game that has somehow survived over the past few years and contains Billy, Teddy, America, and Kate as playable heroes. The game isn’t the most interesting but you can make a fun team of your three favorite Young Avengers!
Marvel Collect! by Topps -
This ‘game’ is a lot less interesting it’s essentially a virtual card collecting game that lets you collect and open digital cards and car packs. Billy & Teddy are featured in a few collections and pop up every few months along with most of the other Young Avengers.
Marvel Puzzle Quest -
This one is another simple mobile game that features marvel characters in a simple candy crush style match game that integrates a little action. I’m not one to love games like this but it does feature Billy as a playable character with Teddy as a ‘support’.
There aren’t many more recent Marvel games to include the Young Avengers but Billy is supposedly coming to the mobile game ‘Marvel Contest of Champions’, hopefully we’ll see more of them in newer games and games to come!

There’s a world of stuff out there...
Lego is possibly the best toy for a lifetime. As a child, it gives you access to an entire world of your imagination. As an adult, it can still do that but it can also be an artistic dream or in my case a fun hobby to collect. And over the years, I have collected a ton of Lego Minifigures. Some are completely custom. Others are rare. Some I just made myself by putting random parts together.
But over the years, I’ve learned to appreciate the Non-Lego competitors. Some are great, but some are definitely worse. So here are 10 minifigures I’ve owned, with 5 I would gladly say rivals that of Lego. And 5 that proves there’s a reason Lego is the leader of the brand.
Best 1 - Bootleg Sonic Figures
Lego and Sega did finally team up to release a few Sonic sets. One small one from Lego Dimensions and one Larger one in Sonic the Hedgehog. But sadly, the only Minifigures to come from it are Sonic alone. But thanks to World Minifigs, we got a bunch of them. While some are questionable stuff here and there (you’ll see a Sonic from there later) other characters felt perfectly nailed on! Two examples here being Cream the Rabbit and Infinite. They look amazing. Even if the others aren’t up to snuff, I do recommend getting the collection if you can. Just avoid the ones with the skateboards.
Worse 1 - Tyco Minifig
Tyco was a competing brand against Lego. They sell them for cheap and the minifigure shows. It looks like Morty. Besides that, when it comes to play features it's very limited. While it has arm, leg and neck articulation, the hands don’t move like Lego. And even worse, no holes in the back of the legs. So if you want this guy to sit down in a vehicle while playing you better make sure he is buckled up.
Best 2 - Snoopy by Linoos
While it has the same problem as the Tyco Minifigure when it comes to sitting, it does have its advantages. The hands have the full rotation like a Lego Minifigure. The Arms are on a ball joint so it has more movement options than even a Lego. And more importantly, it's Snoopy. Just being able to play with Lego and Snoopy at the same time is a big plus for any Peanuts fan.
Worst 2 - Pearl by McFarlane
I like Steven Universe. I enjoyed the brand’s Cuphead and FNAF figures. But if there is one flaw with those figures is that they have weak joints. The worst example being this Pearl figure. If the ankles don’t fall off, her leg will. And having her stand is extremely tricky. The South Park Minifigs don’t have this problem because they don’t have those connections like Pearl here does. In fact it only seems to be this Pearl Minifig that can’t keep her legs on.
Best 3 - The Rugrats from Snap and Switch by Well Played
In 2018, Basic Fun showed us their future releases of Minifigures based on Nicktoons. We were going to get Aah! Real Monsters, Rocko, Hey Arnold, Ren and Stimpy, and of course Rugrats. They were the ones who did Bendy and the Ink Machine Minifigures and outside Alice their Version 1 figures were neat. While their Exploding Kittens set was released, Nickelodeon decided to go for a cheaper deal with Well Played. But surprisingly, they look incredibly good. Even the TMNT ones look like it could rival Lego's attempts. Shame it's just these two.
Worst 3 - Family Guy from K’Nex
Remember when the Simpsons came out for Lego? Family Guy followed suit (or maybe came before?) via the K’Nex brand. And BOY were they ugly. Brian used the Yoshi body mold, Peter and Chris seem to be more wide than they’re supposed to be (probably used Bowser’s Mold), and poor Lois and Meg. They obviously used the Mario Molds and they look like they got stung by bees everywhere other than the arms. Stewie is passable, but that’s it.
Best 4 - Power Rangers from Mega Bloks
Before they were called Mega Construx, they were Mega Bloks. While that name still exists, it's usually for the smaller age demographic. These did two and came in two variants. One is a six pack to celebrate the Power Rangers 20th Anniversary (that if I didn’t open could have made an easy grand) that had removable helmets (but they all share the same head underneath). The other no removal of helmets. Still with the articulation close to the Mega Construx figures while still being closer to size with Lego Minifigs, this is a great way to have Lego sized Power Ranger fun.
Worst 4 - This Sonic Minifigure I got from E-Bay
Remember earlier when I said the Bootleg Sonic Minifigures are questionable, this Sonic is one of them. He looks more like Shadow than Sonic. But he’s still MILES better than the Sonic Minifigure I got from E-Bay before Lego released a real Sonic. I got him thinking two things: 1) Lego is never going to release a Sonic set. 2) The head is a custom piece. Well, it is custom but it’s more like putting a piece of plastic on a cylinder one by one piece. They don’t sell them like this anymore and thank goodness.
Best 5 - Transformers from Kre-O
While their building sets weren’t as good as Lego’s their minifigures are on point. Ball jointed legs, arms, wrist swivel and size of a Lego Minifigure. They’re frikkin awesome. I even got a G.I. Joe one of equal quality. I do wish Hasbro kept going with the Kre-O line and released stuff with My Little Pony and the like. But alas, they’re out of the brick building game and decided to lend out their licenses to others. For good, it gave us a Lego Optimus Prime. For bad…
Worst 5 - G. I. Joe from Forever Clever
Hasbro, instead of doing their own brick builds of G. I. Joe, gave the license to Forever Clever. While I found both these sets and the Rugrats sets from Five and Below, you can definitely tell which one is the more quality brand. You see that Gray Ninja? The packaging showed him white. So imagine thinking I got Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, I get a random Grey Ninja. Not to mention they look blocky compared to the others. Also the builds were pretty weak grip wise.
And that’s a small sampling of my collection. Want more?

I saw this making the rounds among the Self Shippers I follow, so I had to do one! I saw this on @shiny-self-shipping‘s page for reference. I did edit the name, though, because although these OCs all started as self-ships, now they look absolutely nothing like me. But, they were still created with the intention of shipping with a favorite character, and I think they count. I had to add a couple extra rows because I just have so many. I’ll put some info on each ship under the cut.
Kind vs Cruel--that’s my non-Hazbin version of Alastor (I use him in the Owl House instead) with an OC I haven’t fully decided on a name for. I’m still working on figuring out her story. Right now I’m thinking she accidentally brings Alastor from the Boiling Isles to the human world and has to teach him how to live there.
Morosexual and Moron--that’s another unnamed OC with Sun Wukong, specifically the version of him from Lego Monkie Kid. He’s an overconfident idiot with a good heart. What’s not to love?
Drive Each Other Nuts--Barbara Ann Berry, or just “Ann,” who works for King Dice at the casino. She’s always causing trouble, and he’s always getting onto her case for it, but they love each other anyway.
Dork and Debonair--my TF2 class, Snitch, with the red Spy. Gosh, I drew him awful. His face is surprisingly difficult to capture.
Criminal Pals to Lovers--Pepper, an alien from outside Star Command’s influence, rebuilds Nos4a2 and they become partners in crime.
Height Difference--Zoe and Troy are sent back in time to Borderlands 2 and become part of the Vault Hunter gang there, falling in love in the process.
Peppy and Grumpy--Dottie was originally Cad’s target, but she ends up helping him enough that they become partners. She’s a sweetheart and he hates it but he gets fond of her as time goes on.
It’s About Power--Layne is my Courier Six and is very smart and very strong. She won’t let Dean be in control like he wants to be. He very unexpectedly gets flustered by this.
Lit Major and Drama Major--Jill is a New Yorker with a calm outlook and thinks she’s very profound. Scarecrow is a perceptive ham who shows Jill that she isn’t as great as she thought she was.
Sunshine and Tsundere--Rynn Spicito gets the card pack instead of Luke and glitches the game out, getting physically sucked into it. She is enamored by P03 and refuses to leave him alone, and he won’t admit he likes it, even when he ends up saving her from the agent who came to kill her.
Mom Friend and Dad Friend--Barb runs into Sam and Max on a mission gone crazy (as usual) and ends up part of the team. She’s very maternal and is always watching after the two, scolding them when they’re particularly rotten and baking them cookies on the side.
Poised Perfection and Ditz--Sally May got pulled into the Dishonored games through Void shenanigans and the Outsider is baffled by it. She loves teasing him and running around like a headless chicken and it amuses him greatly.
Hurt/Comfort--Marylin, my Anti-Maria Robotnik, is knee-deep in the war with Zobotnik when her team captures Ztarline. He quickly realizes that, A, she is a Robotnik, and B, she is a kindhearted one who won’t betray him, and joins her side. He briefly is terrified when Finitevus turns her into Enerjak but honestly he finds it more enamoring. They’re there for each other when they weep over past memories in the middle of the night.
Nervous Wreck and Monster--Parcel was from the normal dimension on Earth and was pulled into the crazy side Hat Kid landed on. She is terrified of Snatcher, but he ropes her into a contract as his mailwoman and she’s too happy to have job security to complain. She catches Snatcher off guard by bonding with him through it.
Hermbo and Tired Cynic--Sarah is a half-Trill who ends up on DS9. Her inclusion changes the timeline and Weyoun ends up on the station as well, with her teaching him how to Person. She’s endlessly optimistic and it’s what keeps him going.

The 2012 version of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" also had ties with Lego, which I assume may have been the last Nick show to receive Lego sets and figures. Since the show ended in 2017, roughly around the same time Traveller's Tales announced that "Lego Dimensions" was cancelled, what better way to end the show by having them in "Lego Dimensions" had its final wave not been cancelled?

So I didn’t talk much about the Level Packs and such in my original review of Lego Dimensions. Since then I’ve played all but the Mission Impossible Level Pack and the Ghost Busters Story and Level Packs. I’m going to briefly discuss all of them and if they’re worth it along with some of the adventure world only characters.
Trophies/Achievements: Don’t expect quality here. Each Level and Story Pack has 3 bronzes and when it comes to achievements I assume the game score is also incredibly low as well. For the Level Packs you get one for your first mini-kit, one for getting rule breaker status, and one for completing the level. For the Story packs you get one for getting a rule breaker status in any level, one for completing the story, and another for completing a quest in the adventure world, which only pop up after you’ve finished the story.
The Simpson’s Level Pack: Part of wave one, the biggest plus to this is that it’s cheap on Amazon. Other than that I don’t know what I can really say about it. The level is based around Homer eating Chili and going on a mad trip. It’s relatively short with some not very ideal platforming sections where gravity shifts. For $10 it’s pretty decent, but I couldn’t recommend it at its MSRP of $30. Just to light on content.
Back to the Future Level Pack: If you’re going to get a Back to the Future character, it might as well be in the level pack. This might be the shortest level pack with 4 areas in the main path and a side area for a few extra mini-kits. It may just be that I’ve got to many characters at this point, but I was able to 100% this level on the initial play through in under an hour. I grabbed this for $15 and while the level was mediocre, I haven’t given the adventure world a shot yet. Back to the Future Vehicles are needed for a few puzzles and can’t be loaned out like characters so for that reason alone I’d say this pack would be worth the $15 if you plan on hunting down all the puzzle solutions.
Portal Level Pack: I can’t recommend this enough. It’s lengthy, fun, and plays like a Portal game. Not only is she exclusive access to Portal puzzles and the Portal world, but the builds and mini-figure are hella dope. I actually had this pack over a year before I bought the game just to have the figure. Not only is the level itself super long, but it has a bonus path early on that makes it even longer. I was satisfied with it at $30, but now easily found on Amazon for $10 or less this is a steal.
Doctor Who Level Pack: I’m not a Doctor Who fan, but at half off I grabbed this. Similar to Back to the Future, the Tardis is a special vehicle you’ll need for some puzzles, and here in this level it’s the entire crux of the level. To stop the evil robots you’ll time travel to solve puzzles in something I haven’t seen in any other Lego game. That being said the level only feels as long as it does because time traveling includes a 10 second loading screen. Some of the puzzles are also speed based which isn’t fun or explained. It’s not a terrible level, but I can’t say it’s worth $30, unless you really want Lego Doctor Who stuff.
Midway Arcade Level Pack: This is the worst level pack hands down. I don’t know who cleared this. The puzzles are bad, and progress requires you to get some level of high score in numerous arcade games emulated. While you do have the special vehicle aspect here, it only leads to more arcade game emulation that as far as I know doesn’t tie into any mini-kits. I got this for $15 and it wasn’t worth it.
Adventure Time Level Pack: Its fine. Like the above I got it half off and it was fine. Finn has a lot of abilities that he has access to and while I’ve never watched the show, the level pack does a good job keeping things surface level. For $15 it was fine, but I’m not sure how much more I would have been fine spending.
Fantastic Beasts Story Pack: This I got as a gift super late because it was back ordered like crazy. This is a really good Story pack. The campaign like I assume all the story packs uses the adventure world as a hub between levels. While not as frequently used as Lego Batman, these intermissions occasionally have some hub world puzzles to solve. The Levels are all really good and the story is told really well. While some audio is roughly ripped from the film, most of it sounds good enough that I never had an issue. $50 honestly isn’t too steep here.
Sonic Level Pack: I’m not a Sonic fan, but as a gamer I felt I need a Lego Sonic in my collection, so I nabbed him for $20 on Black Friday. This level pack is long. I ran into a few bugs while playing, but overall I had no major issues. If you like Sonic this is worth getting, but as far as I know the only content locked in here is the adventure world and level so it’s entirely skippable.
The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack: This was my first Story pack. For $35 on sale it was a solid investment. Unlike the other story packs you get two new characters in Robin and Bat Girl on top of a vehicle. The story is retold pretty well, and while the levels aren’t the best, the intermissions between levels are pretty meaty. $35 I was happy with my purchase, but even a $40 I would have been fine.
Goonies Level Pack: Grabbed this half off. While I’ve seen Goonies, I can’t say I’m a super fan. The level itself is interesting. While the figure include is Sloth, in level you’ll get to play as Chunk and Data as well who sadly can’t be played as outside the level. The builds are pretty cool, but the level itself was designed in such a way that as someone with all of these characters built up I only had to use the Skeleton Oregon at its required parts. I’d say this is at least worth $20.
Harry Potter Characters/Adventure World: I have Harry, Hermione, and old snake face. Despite my love of Hermione, Harry and Voldermort are the only snake speakers and they also have built in flight. I have them all because I love them all, but if you’re only going to get one, get the team pack.
Adventure Time Team Pack: This is a must. The amount of abilities covered in this pack is insane. On top of the exclusive BMO vehicle, you get Rainbow building and the Gyro sphere as well as a whole hell of a lot of other abilities both common and uncommon. Even as someone who hasn’t watched Adventure Time, the abilities in this pack make it worth full price.
Lego City Fun Pack: This is the most interesting character I’ve seen. Despite being listed as having all of these abilities, he doesn’t start with any of them. You actually need to unlock the suits that give Chas McCain his abilities. Haven’t had much time to explore the world yet, but it’s pretty huge.
Lego Chima: Does anyone actually care about these guys? I grabbed the Gator dude for $5 at my local Five Below (think dollar store with a little more flexibility). As a character with the dive ability he instantly gains value over the other Chima chumps since it means he is the only character who can do underwater Chima chargers. The map itself I explored for maybe a half hour and as someone with no connection to the franchise it did little to sell me on the series. If you are going to get a Chima figure the Gator boy is the one to grab.
Wizard of Oz: How could I forget the wonderful world of the Wicked Witch of the West? Being the only Wizard of Oz character, she is your only ticket to this world. It’s a cool recreation of the Wizard of Oz with a really cool area just off the side of the world. On top of the adventure world, old green face functions as a flying version of Gandalf with the addition of mind control, which means if you plan on grabbing that pesky “Speedy thing goes in” trophy, she can significantly cut down your time by avoiding whole rooms in some cases.
Scooby Doo: Scooby Doo and Shaggy are the only Scooby Doo characters you can get, and both are packaged together in a team pack meaning it’s the only way to get into their adventure world. The map covers the same environments that are covered in the Scooby Doo themed story level. It’s a fine adventure map, and Scooby Doo is a character who can dive which gives him an edge up on most characters. I was able to grab the pack for half off and I thought it was worth it.
