Swanson: From Kobe Bryant’s death to wildfires, LA unites in times of crisis

LOS ANGELES – We all remember where we were. In our kitchens, in our cars, coaching our kids. Just waking up after a night out, or sitting down to eat, or about to paint a set piece for my daughter’s middle school play … Kobe Bryant. Helicopter crash. Dead. A hoax, we assumed. A mistake, we presumed. There was just no way. Five eventful years later, we can all still vividly recall those moments…

With the ongoing LA wildfires I have a few resources and updates to share. Firstly, I hope you all are safe. Thank you to everyone who has checked in with me, I am safe.

We have cancelled our January classes at the academy. Our February drag wig styling class is still on.

Monday Motivational - Thanks to the helpers who are doing what they can in Los Angeles

i just need to vent so if u wanna scroll please do

the city i was born and raised in is burning

its so devastating how i have a list of friends and family who have lost their homes

my sister evacuated

the smoke in the air is making it hard to breathe

its so hard to even begin to say how i feel -depressed anxious scared don't due it justice

my lungs hurt my stomach is in knots

i have gotten used to the sound of helicopters flying overhead

it's been so traumatic to see the places i have happy childhood memories in burn to the ground

its so frustrating how the winds are expected to continue, It's frustrating how people are using AI to make the hollywood sign look like its on fire or how some people are using this crisis as an excuse to exploit and loot,or to take fucking selfies or to pretend that they were displaced or lost everything when for views

we have some containment but so many people have been displaced

the people i love have lost everything they have worked so tirelessly for

their homes their cars

it's infuriating how some people are making jokes about it

when i was in grade 7 my family had an arson fire, the panic i felt as a 12?13? year old i can't even imagine feeling it now being able to fully comprehend it

i know what its like to have to rebuild from the ashes-to loose everything so dear and cherished

it fucking crushes your spirit

having to be strong now as a 26 year old teacher for my kiddos has been so challenging to not break down when they ask can why is it snowing or when can we go outside

it's just fucking awful and i just have been crying and praying and crying again

i haven't been able to sleep or really eat

just numb

im safe but im so scared

IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THIS!

The tragedy of the LA fires can't be understated. We're still grieving, processing and mentally bouncing back. We can not fathom what it must be like for those who lost something due to the fires.

We hoped to start doing more posting this year but -- the fires, bring about a need for healing. Next week we will release a Four Part Podcast called "Fire On The Mountain" where we discuss the landscape of LA, these fires and the aftermath from a personal and local angle. Please watch for it!

Despite the hard times, LA is, and will still be, a vibrant, positive, admired city. It hasn’t lost any luster for tourists, American dreamers and hard-working immigrants. LA is one of the most visited and revered cities in the world. That’s not changing. It’s the entertainment capital of the world - also not changing.

LA is often called the dream factory, a city of champions and a magical town -- we’ll need all that to come together nicely to blossom again and imagine a new Los Angeles! ❤️ With Love, Hollywood Love
