That's the thing though bc there would be portions ga who aren't here for the queer storylines are good with buck and hen have queer partners chase those partners aren't mains and so it's sort if a out of sight out of mind things but if you have 3 of the 5 mains as queer (not that more representation isn't good) it becomes a queer show and that would put more people off that it would join bc a lot of the fandom has a fundamental misunderstanding of the bulk of the audience that brings in the ratings
I agree with you ! I'm also gonna use this to bounce off of to talk about how having Buck and Eddie together would change the dynamic within the firehouse which I would say is probably one of the top reasons many people watch this show for. Whether you watch more for the emergencies or the personal moments, the dynamic between the team is the foundation to making those part work as well as they do. Changing this could affect ratings.
Rest under the cut because it got way too long
First, it's very unlikely that in the real LAFD that Eddie and Buck could work on the same shift. There would be a conflict of interest there, as much as everyone should be professional, there is always that chance that they may in times of distress priotise their romantic partner and not on the job. It's like in medicine. For example, it is against most policies to carry out any kind of procedure, examination, or consultion on a family member. Having them seen by a non related professional reduces the chance of bias, thus reducing the chance of harm or exploitation. Having them on the same team could also mean that they bring home life disputes into work, which distracting them and going on to cause harm to civilians, co-workers, or themselves. While yes, 911 is not a perfect example of the real world, I don't think this is something they would necessarily forgo. It's fun in fanfics to have it explained as okay by mysterious paperwork, but irl and in the show, it would not happen this way. (I do understand that in ls Nancy and Mateo are together while in the same firehouse, but they are also under different captains and work in different teams. As such they spend much less time together in comparison to what Buck and Eddie would be doing as they do not exclusively work on the same team and will be going on different calls and in different vehicles compared to Buck and Eddie, who work on the same team and also go to scenes in the same vehicle).
Having two main characters who are within the same team would also mess with the balance of the show. Obviously, bathena are both main characters, but they do not both work for the same service and also arguably the main characters of 911, so they will get more screen time and focus as they bring in the GA audience. Eddie and Buck are both within the fire service, and Eddie is also the bottom billed main. The focus would be off, and with how some fans see it, they want the focus to be on their relationship, ignoring that they are not the main draw of the show and thus turn away GA. The show would not feel quite right as more of the firehouse scenes may feel like there is a focus on those two rather than the whole team, and tbh I wouldn't want that. Also, realistically, as they would be likely working the same shift (in the world the shippers want), they would be around each other a lot. That would put strain on any relationship and also parenting Chris (which I will not go into as i am not a parent myself so do not understand all the nuances of it but as a child of a parents who had to work longer hours and spent time in both breakfast and afterschool clubs its hard to not be able to spend that much time with them and also increases the cost of childcare, once my dad got into teaching summers and breaks were a lot more fun because he was around more. Tldr it would be hard on chris to not be able to see both guardians for long periods if they both worked on the same shifts). Holidays all together would be hard as it is likely harder for both of them to get time off at the same time. There would be a lot of strain and stress in that relationship, of course people could make it work but as Eddie has been shown to struggle to communicate issues that would make it harder to work through issues before they turn into serious problems and Buck also has his own issues when it comes to relationships and would likely burn himself out trying to make sure the relationship worked and likely struggling with abandonedment issues etc.
I think a lot of this would lead to not fun drama to watch on the show or it would have to be handwaved away to make it all work. I wouldn't want that, and I doubt the GA would either. They don't watch the show for Buck and Eddie. I think the change in dynamics would turn away people from the show and would definitely turn away the less tolerant people. The GA also, like Tommy and Buck together they have had a good response to that, so why would they throw it away for a part of the online fandom. Buck and Tommy will be here to stay for a little while due to that alone and I think many people now (including the GA) want to see Buck settled down in a long term relationship and to see Eddie get a partner that he can settle down with, without breaking up Buck and Tommy.
It's amazing how many queer stories and characters we have gotten in 911, and while yes, I would love and be accepting of more, I don't think Eddie will be one of them.

Anon recced the Rewrite Series on ao3, written by ProsperDemeter. Buck was more than happy to make a bookmark out of dried yellow roses and sunflowers for it!
Tumblr media
The series contains the following works:
glue
buck/eddie | teen and up | 85.5k words
A month away from graduating the LAFD Academy, Evan Buckley gets introduced to new recruit Eddie Diaz and things certainly change for both of them after that. -- Another season one rewrite.
stuck
buck/eddie | teen and up | 166.3k words
It's been two months since we last left off and both Buck and Eddie are in for an adventure as they navigate being in a not-relationship (situationship, if you ask Buck) and working together at the same fire station. -- Or, the season two rewrite.
collision
buck/eddie | teen and up | 173.3k words
After the truck bombing the dynamics change as Buck learns that some trauma can't be outrun and Eddie learns that some betrayals are just waiting for the right moment to come to light. Or, we rewrite season three.

buck/eddie | teen and up | 212.9k words
“I’ve got you.” Eddie walked him backwards, a hand careful on the bow of his back to help him stay steady while Buck wasn’t looking where he was stepping. “Our kid’s happy and healthy.” He shrugged. “For once, our world doesn’t feel like it’s on the brink of disaster.” Eddie chuckled and Buck answered it with a quiet laugh of his own. “I love you,” Eddie told him seriously. “And I want to make sure you know how much I love you.” “Come on, Eddie,” Buck softened, his fingers stroking a careful pattern into the tiny end pieces of his hair. “I know how much you love me.” -- Another season four rewrite.
foundation
buck/eddie | teen and up | 2/10 chapters. WIP
Eddie's healed from being shot, but he's not really healed, is he, when he keeps forgetting he's not in Afghanistan. Buck's still healing too, though it's easier when Eddie's working at dispatch instead of in the field. The boys are engaged, they've got a wedding to plan and family to grow closer to. It's season five... let's see just how strong these foundations are.
Thanks for stopping by Buck & Eddie's flowershop. I hope you enjoy the dried flowers bookmark! Have a nice say!

the "brotherhood". it's always the fucking "brotherhood".
national fallen firefighters foundation shares a documentary about LAFD station 9, and suggests that every firefighter in the country watches it. started watching it, but only made it a few minutes in, because the whole intro is guys from 9 talking about the "brotherhood" and the "camaraderie" and the "closeness of the fire family" and how every day was just so awesome because of all that...
and that's not what i experienced in my 12 years as a full time firefighter. but i had tits, and i wasn't the "cute one" or one of the lesbians, but i'm sure that had *nothing* to do with how some days i dreaded going in to the firehouse so much i got physically sick. i'm sure that that has nothing to do with the scars i have from being assaulted with fireworks, or the joy of having one of my first captains tell me that he "didn't believe that women should be there", so I'd best "stay the fuck out of the way if I didn't want to die". for the record, the "cute one" was just told by him to sit down and shut up and keep to herself, rather than having her life literally threatened... but apparently i *imagined* those threats (yeah, that's what the "cute one" said to me... couldn't even get the other women to back me up). just like i *imagined* the third degree burns i got from my own fucking academy classmates setting off bottle rockets in my fucking lap. or the battallion chief that night *laughing* at my bloody injuries and walking away.
i wish that i hadn't been married at the time, so i could have pretended to be a lesbian. they were afraid of the dykes... afraid that they'd get their asses sued if they so much as sneezed in their direction. i was the only non-lesbian, non-attractive woman on the job, though. that made me fair game.
so, yeah. i won't be finishing that documentary. when my own "brothers" couldn't be fucked to so much as send me a sympathy card when my dad died, when my house burned down, when i lost everything... when i wasn't even allowed to attend the funeral of one of the guys i went through paramedic school with, and who really *was* a real Brother to me, because I "didn't belong there"...
nah. stick your "brotherhood" up your ass, folks. because it *is* a BROTHERhood, and *sisters* need not apply.
.
.
(tonight brought to you by the fact that my shoulder is a worse aching ball of shit than usual, and all that "we are a family you wouldn't understand" shit was quite frankly triggering in a very real and painful way)
and as a post script to the women out there who are working at becoming firefighters... it's better now than it was 10+ years ago when i left. but just watch your six, because you have tits, which means that you really can't trust anyone else to watch your six, until you can. and if you end up in a shithole like i was? document. every. fucking. thing.
you never know when you might end up needing it.

Buck & T@ylor: Blurred Lines
T@ylor's actions in 5x17 will ruin the 118
Tumblr media
For the entirety of season 5, Buck and T@ylor's relationship has shown that they were never compatible.  Trust has always been the one glaring object that keeps cracking their foundation.  It's preventing them from being totally committed to each other. He couldn't trust her after the things she did to him and the 118 in 2x6 "Dosed" and 2x8 "Buckctually " and she can't trust him because of his kiss with L×cy in 5x11 "Outside Looking In".  Neither of them are good at separating themselves from their work.  They don't know how to keep their personal and professional lives separated which keeps leading them down the path to destruction.
Tumblr media
Throughout seasons 1-3 it was very apparent that all Buck had was his job.  In 1x1 "Pilot", Buck told Bobby after he was fired for having sex with random women inside of the firetrucks that "I need this job, I love this job. Don't do this to me".  In 3x4 "Triggers" he filed a lawsuit against Bobby and the department so that he could return to work.  He told Eddie in 3x6 "Monsters", "I needed my job back. I missed being here, being part of the team."
Tumblr media
He's matured somewhat since then and finally realized in 4x14 "Survivors" that he's more valuable than his job when Eddie told him "you act like you're expendable but you're wrong".
Tumblr media
Buck knows his found family will love him anyway even if he's no longer with the 118. Eddie is proof of that because both Buck and Bobby were there for him in 5x14 "Dumb Luck" and that was months after he had left firefighting.
Tumblr media
All T@ylor has is her job and Buck. According to her own admissions, she doesn't have any family or friends. In 4x8 "Breaking Point" she told Buck "I could really use a friend these days" and in 5x9 "Past is Prologue" she told Buck all about her Arrested Development of a childhood regarding how her father murdered her mother.  Her interactions with the 118 have been less than stellar because Buck didn't treat her like he did Abby.  He didn't invite her to have lunch at the firehouse and even though she was at the Grant-Nash house for brunch in 4x12 "Treasure Hunt", she was the outsider.  Her one interaction with Bobby in 5x10 "Wrapped in Red" was about which sweater she should choose to get Buck for Christmas.  Finally her interactions with Hen and Chimney in 5x17 showed they don't trust her.  Buck had to speak up on her behalf before they elaborated on the Jonah situation.
Sneaking behind Buck's back to run the Jonah story was scandalous and if he hadn't caught her she more than likely would have run it.  He asked her to promise him she wouldn't and she didn't but the problems started when she jumped ahead of all the other news outlets with her phrase "sources close to the case" while she was reporting the story. In an earlier post titled "Breaking News: T@ylor Ke!!y is a Liar", information about how her job could come into play to hurt the 118 was included.
Tumblr media
The 118's involvement is going to be how things get messy.  It's not going to be a stretch for people to figure out Buck works for the LAFD and how him being linked to her explains how she obtained all of the information from sources who are close to the investigation.  Is this Buck's fault? Partially it is because if he had stayed away from her this wouldn't have been an issue. He keeps making the same mistakes with her because he doesn't want to be alone.  If Jonah escapes like Jeffrey the rapist did and comes back for more revenge, T@ylor's story just put them all back in danger.  Chimney is Buck's niece's father and is like a brother to him.  Hen is like a sister to him and if the leaks T@ylor mentioned gets investigated by the department, it's all going to come back to the 118 and to Bobby.  This story has come full circle and everything will come back to Buck's found family. In 3x5 "Rage", the 118 was previously on the wrong side of a lawsuit before and that was all thanks to Buck.  Now pending an investigation, the 118 will be on the wrong side thanks to him again but this time it will be due to the woman he lives with. Bobby was suspended once before by the LAFD in 2x16 "Bobby begins again" for withholding information about his past in Minnesota so who knows how it will end since he hired Jonah. There could be repercussions that surpass anyone just losing their jobs because victims' families will more than likely sue the department for millions. That will include more shame for Bobby who's already spiraling from the fact that he hired Jonah.  He said to Athena in 5x17, "I brought him into my house" foreshadowing for Bobby's guilt that will likely play out well into Season 6.
Tumblr media
Buck should be able to trust her but now he knows that he can't and while he will have a family regardless of his job, T@ylor won't.  When they break-up all she'll have is her job and that may be the reason she clings to it just like she's been clinging to him.  Her actions could ruin his job, his dad Bobby and his found family.  And that friends is how and why Buck was so furious when he saw her on TV reporting on the Jonah of it all.
Tumblr media
It's a good thing Eddie was in Texas while this train wreck was happening🙃😉🤪.
Tumblr media
They both need therapy to deal with their pasts but being in a relationship hasn't worked for them and it never will.  It has to be exhausting for both of them because they are constantly at odds about their work.  Blurring the lines in any type of relationship causes things to get messy.  Whenever it's difficult to see when said line is being crossed, several questions need to be answered so that the line can come back into focus.  Where will their relationship be after 5x17 "Hero Complex" and at the start of 5x18 "Starting Over", only the coshowrunner KR and the writers know but a BT breakup can be seen on the horizon.

Okay but the choice to give Eddie a briefcase is actually so good.
Because what do you picture when the good all American suburban dream dad of 1950s sitcoms carrying when they go to work? A briefcase.
What does it Eddie have in it? Because what would he need to carry to and from work? He has a desktop and why would he need to take any files home? It just doesn’t add up in my head.
But to have him forcing himself into this picture perfect working dad, exercising, learning to cook, bringing his little reusable mug to work a 9 to 5 job running the lafd Twitter, where he has little routines with adjacent co workers. And he’s not satisfied. He can’t sleep. He is pushing himself to stick it out. Until Chris says “I never said that” breaking the foundation of everything.

Text Transcript:
Dear Friends,
There are often rumors that Los Angeles Firefighters are in need of donated food or supplies, such as blankets, wipes, water, energy beverages, snack bars, toothpaste or eyedrops during wildfires.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
We're honored to be your Fire Department, and plan extensively to support in every way possible, those who proudly protect you, to make sure they always have or can easily get all they need to remain battle ready.
You trust the men and women of LAFD to protect you at life's most difficult times. Please also trust us when we say that should we ever have a functional need, we would never hesitate to ask!
While there are long term organized campaigns to supply special equipment to LAFD crews via the non-profit Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation - - the well-meaning spontaneous physical donation of goods, including personal care items, food and water on the fireline, at command posts or neighborhood fire stations is thankfully NOT needed or desirable.
Please know we deeply sense your appreciation, but want you to know that nothing could mean more to us than simply seeing you and your family safely in front of your undamaged home. Your smile, a friendly wave or a simple hand-scrawled "Thank You" sign
means more than words could ever describe.
Sadly, we're not only emotionally overwhelmed with your profound kindness during wildfires, but logistically as well. To the point that the well-meaning donation of physical goods (71 unsolicited pizzas delivered day-and-night over a three day period to a single fire station as but one example) can clearly challenge our operational abilities.
Like the military, your LAFD crews purposely prepare (and pack) for extended deployment. They are mentally and in all ways operationally prepared for battle.
To return to the fire station and find 600 unsolicited gallons of bottled water - - a 5,000 lbs surprise that has to be quickly moved from where the fire engine must be parked - or the 200 cubic feet of perishable food items we sadly can't refrigerate - - are examples of things that truly touch our heart, but quickly become physically and emotionally unmanageable tasks that take us away from caring for you - or each other.
Add the concerns related to COVID-19, and our inability to warmly welcome casual visitors, and you soon see the challenges we can face from such well meant kindness, especially during a major event.
So... if you encounter someone telling you to bring "badly needed items" to a Los Angeles Fire Station, please direct them to this message. We're touched to the point of tears by your kindness, but truly are not in need of anything more than a wave or a smile. If that should change, we pledge to let you know.
Thank you for allowing us to serve!
NOTE: If giving is part of your DNA and truly unavoidable (we do understand), please consider a Random Act of Kindness to a stranger in our honor, or a small monetary donation to any well established and highly accountable charity that touches your heart.
Among the charities doing great good right now, is the American Red Cross, and other non-profits active in disasters, such as those found here: https : /  / www . nvoad . org / current-members /
Since someone will likely ask, here is a short list of well established 501(c)3 charitable organizations related to your local fire service:
supportlafd . org → the "equip your LAFD folks"
www . wodff . org
firefamilyfoundation . org
We hope this helps, and again - Thank You!
Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
Brian Humphrey Firefighter/Specialist Public Service Officer Los Angeles Fire Department

tl;dr Please STOP Donating Stuff to the local fire department!
They don’t need it, and dealing with ways to offload the donations just causes more work for them.

I was bored this weekend so I rewatched season 4a. Spoilers ahead.
Honestly, I don't think things get popping until episode 3 [but weren’t actually nearly that great until the last 3 episodes tbh] and I am not even being Buddie biased or Buckley-Diaz family unit biased [this might be a bold face lie, but on second rewatch, I noticed I was paying more attention to everything else as well]. 4x03 is just a really good episode. Good old emergencies, mixed in with Eddie's paranoia over Hildy. Then from there it's Buck Begins and the whole Buckley family secret. Then of course, I feel like when we get to Jinx that starts some kind of path. The universe path, you know? There Goes the Neighborhood also continues on this path. Buck is still trying to work through some stuff; a terrible date, the bit about SAFE SPACES. Then Breaking Point. Everyone has one right? Even Christopher and getting angry or as Buck put it “ I heard you blew up at your Dad” and that’s not over yet though. Taylor needing a friend. Nearly Buck reaching one, but he managed to repair it. Eddie for the sole fact Christopher runs away. Hen and Karen actually not having a breaking point until... Chim and Maddie breaking and repairing it in regards to how Baby Mango arrives in this world. Athena and Bobby just being parents to everyone as usual.
Fun fact. Breaking Point was on as I typed this and it's the one on one scene between Buck and Chris. "I don't want to miss anyone else," Christopher says after he names all the other people he misses first. Buck is probably also telling himself, don't make it about you Buck, this isn't about you, but you are going to promise, "I'm not going anywhere." The last three episodes (Jinx, There Goes the Neighborhood, and Breaking Point) were like some kind National Treasure bullshit; *Nicolas Cage voice* "The secret lies with Charlotte." "Paul Revere went by horse and it was two lanterns not one" or some bullcrap that movie talked about (not going to lie, I once thought it was comedic), but I just mean the overall premise of National Treasure being about secrets or coded messages and a Treasure Hunt (which if I'm correct is also a name of a potential 911 episode...?)
Can I backtrack a moment to 4x07? You know the awkward double date that Buck invited Taylor to? Buck is sitting awkwardly in that chair, wondering about his life choices and little bit of a song played. The lyrics, "There's someone else for you." Just that bit of the song, for the record and I don't think it was already playing in the previous scene to end so coincidentally over Buck’s face?
I'm also not over Taylor talking about looking for a miracle in which Buck gave to her and Eddie also called Buck a miracle worker.
Okay, the end of Breaking Point: Ana comes over to the house, like some awkward new beginning parallel to Madney being cute as they prepare for Baby Mango. Buck patches things with Albert. Then the not so happy crescendo/breaking point for Hen and Karen. Adopting Nia may not happen.
It's really coded like a treasure hunt and if there's an episode named that, well, that'll be hilarious. I'm forever going to hang onto Future Tense as a way of showing us the future, Buck and Eddie have yet to realize. So when they do realize it, it'll be soo damn good. So if the presumed treasure hunt the universe sends the boys on (with everyone else on their own kind)- but if Buddie doesn’t end with them figuring out what connects them and how they want to be connected...like if they don’t meet in the middle at the X marks the spot (or the universe tether aka Christopher) then I really am just creating this treasure hunt out of thin air and it doesn’t exist like the Dad profusely told Nic Cage’s character in National Treasure...or maybe it’s also like PLAYING DETECTIVES? Cagney and Lacey inspired True Crime podcast brought to you by Buck and Eddie two LAFD firefighters and best friends occasionally featuring their Captain of the 118; plus Bobby’s friend Michael and his partner David who reluctantly participates in these shenanigans but could provide key medical evidence/research. In my mind, they read [mostly Buck and Eddie] their cases/script for this made up podcast as 1940s detectives. Smoky voice Buck: “It’s a locked room mystery.” *1940s detective music* Smoky voice Eddie: “Correction. It’s a locked yard mystery...” Anyway...
Did I mention the clowns to ya'll? We didn't forget abut those clowns did we (Jinx might actually be my fav episode of the season after FUTURE TENSE). The clowns are so pointedly shot after Eddie mentions Ana to Buck. Okay. Then there's also the love languages thing. That's a book Buck’s therapist would've recommended right now or for some reason he’s choosing to read it? As we can see, I think the show might be reeling it back in for Buck. As Eddie put it "I don't know what inspired this software upgrade." Coincidentally, Buck 3.0 is looking to the FUTURE. Anyway, the love languages. NO one immediately thinks about the coffee machine prank. Absolutely no one so I won't even make that a thing, but I notice in that scene Buck "outs" Eddie by telling the team about Ana.
Hen: Ana who?... Is this the one you yelled at? Eddie: I apologized for that. Chim: Yeah okay and you still didn't ask her out? Eddie: She's Christopher's teacher. Bobby: I thought you said she got a new job. Buck: *crickets*
What's the intention behind Buck bursting this supposed secret and then not have him encourage Eddie? Like in his way, Buck could’ve said well, does she do this or that? Words of affirmation? Gift giving? Are yours and her love languages truly compatible? Oh, wait, there’s implications behind the book Buck is reading but also...there's implications behind Chim and Bobby's statements. They're implying okay so go for it. Neither Hen or Buck really do that. Why don’t we have Hen jumping on the encouragement train either? Instead she brings it back to that one unfortunate moment any of them really remembers of Ana... Hmm, it's secrets and coded messages and the one thing that Buck has said from this entire season that truly resonates with me:
Buck (directed to Eddie): The universe is screaming at you and it's like you're not even listening.
Irony is. Neither is he.
Oh wait, another line that resonates with me (and I made a recent post with it too):
Bobby (directed to Eddie): They're so focused on what they don't have that they might miss out on the chance to have something else, something real.
Something real.
You really want me to think this line is about Ana Flores, even if Eddie thinks it somewhat is? And the foundation of it is to encourage Eddie to think about moving on, to stop being so STUCK (2x04 anyone?). If it really is about Ana then we're actually painting Bobby as the character who has no idea...? None whatsoever as to HOW CLOSE Buck and Eddie could be, if that's what they wanted. Seems fake, but okay. Bobby's line actually should highlight that they both are looking in the opposite direction when in fact the SOMETHING REAL is right in front of their faces. The something real is what Eddie came home to after his supposed date.
Just saying because to me it looks Buck and Eddie are still looking in and RUSHING INTO the PAST TENSE and have yet to understand the FUTURE TENSE.

The first firefighting robot in America is here -- and it has already helped fight a major fire in Los Angeles

The first firefighting robot in America is here -- and it has already helped fight a major fire in Los Angeles
The Thermite RS3, the first robotic firefighting vehicle in the United States, was scheduled to arrive at the news conference the morning of October 13, but it was diverted to a major emergency structure fire in the fashion district in Downtown Los Angeles earlier that day.
“It was exciting to see this unique piece of apparatus put into action on its first day in service,” said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott.
“What we had was a large one-story commercial building, it was housing piles of textiles, multiple rolls of fabric,” Scott described. The Thermite RS3 helped push piles of smoldering wet debris, creating a path for the firefighters to operate safely.
“We got some dirt on the tires before the press conference,” Scott added.
The Los Angeles Fire Department is the first in the nation to add a robotic firefighting vehicle to its fleet. The roughly $277,000 purchase was made by the LAFD Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting the department.
“It was about 6 to 8 months to get the fundraising done,” said Liz Lin, the president of the LAFD Foundation. They used funds from larger grants provided by donors such as the Tides Foundation and the Musk Foundation, Lin told Appradab.
The RS3 will be housed with the Urban Search and Rescue team at Fire Station 3 in Downtown Los Angeles and will be deployed to incidents using a trailer towed by a pickup truck, according to Scott.
Almost as big as a Smart car, but weighing 3,500 lbs, the RS3 has treads like a tank, a v-shaped plow capable of pushing debris — including vehicles — out of its way, and a winch that can pull up to 8,000 lbs, according to the LAFD. The frontal nozzle can shoot or spray either water or foam at 2,500 gallons per minute, Scott said. The vehicle, which is remote-controlled by trained firefighters, is equipped with cameras, he added.
The RS3 is manufactured by Howe & Howe, a subsidiary of Textron Systems specializing in advanced robotic land vehicles, including combat vehicles, according to their website.
“The sale and delivery of our Thermite RS3 to the Los Angeles Fire Department represents the first commercial robotic firefighting vehicle in the United States,” Paul Ford, program manager at Textron Systems Corp./Howe & Howe Inc., said in a statement. “We continue to work with multiple other large municipalities within the United States regarding implementing this technology,” Ford added.
LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas decided to procure this new technology for the department after seeing a similar device in action during the Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris last year, Scott explained.
The tool will be used in situations where risk to firefighters would be high, for example in the case of buildings that become structurally unstable, or when hazardous materials are involved.
“The point is we cannot afford to lose firefighters. We would much rather lose a piece of machinery, so we would put this into situations we would not put firefighters in due to significant hazards,” Scott told Appradab.
There have been at least 72 firefighter fatalities in 2020, according to the US Fire Administration. The National Fire Protection Association tallied more than 58,000 injuries to firefighters in the line of duty in 2018, their most up-to-date estimates. Of those injuries, more than 47,000 were connected to exposure to hazardous conditions, the report says.
Just last spring in Los Angeles, an explosion in a building downtown forced firefighters to walk through “a fireball,” injuring 12 of them.
According to Scott, the RS3 will be important in many situations, including commercial fires, fires involving under-construction wood-framed structures, fuel tanker fires and auto storage fires.
The machine could assist during wildfires, pulling hoses up steep hillsides or protecting homes threatened by flames. It could also be used for large animal rescues, or in situations involving barricaded subjects, Scott explained.
The list of potential uses is “endless, and dependent upon imagination and need,” he said.
“The important thing is that we are reducing risk to firefighters,” Scott said.
