It has been a sad day as the Center for Whale Research announced that L84 is missing from the Southern Resident community of orcas, along with J17 and K25, bringing the total population down to 73. News release at: https://www.whaleresearch.com/july2019population
Thanks to Cindy Hansen for sharing her thoughts below on the news of the loss of L84, Nyssa. ❤️ To help us through these losses, we must all gather our strength and continue to move forward doing anything we can to bring back the salmon for the Southern Resident orcas...
Oh Nyssa. 😪
The end of a matriline is a truly tragic event in a population full of tragedies. And what a beautiful amazing matriline it was back in the day. L5 Tanya with her big handsome sons L58 Sparky and L73 Flash. The three of them were so tight knit. Cousin L74 Saanich was usually nearby with his mother L3 Oriana. Those three boys were so impressive together and I looked forward to seeing them whenever I was on the water.
When L84 Nyssa’s mother L51 Nootka died, witnesses reported that they had seen Saanich and his nephew Nyssa trying to feed Nyssa’s orphaned sibling pieces of salmon. But L97 was an infant and he or she also perished.
They are all gone now. A wonderful family that is now an empty space in an ID guide that has more tombstones than photos of living whales. We thought L84 had beaten the odds by adopting a new surrogate mother and some new brothers after the rest of his family died. And I guess for a while he did. I’m glad he had them at the end. Such a sad sweet story.
Please don’t let them be forgotten. We have to keep these stories alive even when the whales are no longer here to show us. RIP Nyssa. You will be deeply missed my friend.

76 now back to 73...Today was a very somber day for me, and for us all upon the declaration that J17 Princess Angeline, along with K25 Scooter and L84 Nyssa, were all pronounced missing and presumed dead. The worst bit is I just adopted Princess Angeline, and she arrived in the mail one day before they officially pronounced her dead. I am deeply hurt by this and I am in a bit of woes of my own still, so I still will not be on here for a bit. But I wanted to honor the matriarch that I had come to love and admire. I am sorry I could not do her justice, but I wanted to somehow honor her, and get people out there aware of her, of her family, and the rest of the Southern Residents left and in need of help.
With so much worrying news and concerns for the Southern Residents, it is crucial we act now. We cannot keep sitting idly by as more and more succumb to starvation or worse. We cannot let her death go in vain, and we must strive to help what remains of this dwindling population.

Via @southernresidentorcas Today’s post is L117 “Keta”! - L117 “Keta” was born in 2010 to L54 “Ino” (b. 1977) and was her last known calf. - Keta has two siblings, L100 “Indigo” (2001-2014) and L108 “Coho” (b. 2006). His grandmother is L35 “Victoria” (est. 1942-1996) and through her, Keta has one aunt L65 “Aquarius” (1984-1994) and two one possible uncles L1 “Oskar” (est. 1959-2000 and L50 “Shala” (est. 1973-1989). - L88 “Wavewalker” (b. 1993), an unrelated orphaned adult male, travels with the L54’s permanently and Keta’s mother Ino seems to have taken over the mother role for Wavewalker. L84 “Nyssa” (1990-2019), another orphaned male, also used to traveled with Keta’s family but he has unfortunately passed away earlier this year. - As Keta’s mother Ino has only had male offspring and is currently 42 years old, she is likely post-reproductive which means Keta’s matriline will eventually die out. - L117’s name “Keta” is another word for chum salmon, a type of salmon that the Southern Residents eat. His brother’s name Coho is also a reference to a salmon species of the Pacific Northwest. - L117 “Keta” can be identified by his two open saddlepatches. - Do you love L117 “Keta”? Let us know why in the comments! - Photo credit in the comments https://www.instagram.com/p/B3KwMavikJ9/?igshid=1vottdky7oa5s

InkTober2017 nr. 18: L84 Nyssa, an adult male Southern Resident, born in 1990. He is the last surviving member of his matriline, the L9’s. These days he travels in the company of the L54’s, along with another orphan, L88 Wave Walker. The SRKW’s are starving and they need help fast. Please consider making a change; stop eating Chinook salmon. We don’t need salmon, we want it. We have a choice to catch or eat something different, they don’t. ORCAS FREED IN RUSSIA👏🤝🤗🍾🥂💙!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful news with us @maestro320 🙏🌈 - "The Dash To Freedom" - 🔵Maestro's Notes: As three of the Salish Sea Orcas ( Princess Angeline J17, Nyssa L84 and Scoter K25 ) passed away, three of their cousins in Russia ( Zoya, Tikhon and Gadget ) were given a second lease on life as they were released in the Sea of Okhotsk after a long journey from the infamous "Whale Prison". Look at these three Orcas speed away from the release barge then pause to savor their new found freedom. • Please pardon me for the translation from Russian to English. I would like to Thank the Delfa Center @delfacenter , Dolphin Project Russia @dolphin_project_rus and @freerussianwhales for tagging me. Please visit these pages for the original multi-posts in Russian. - @maestro320 This post courtesy of Greenpeace Russia @greenpeaceru - 🐋🐋🐋 Three killer whales, Zoya, Tikhon and Gadget, are free! This afternoon in Primorsky time, three killer whales from the so-called “whale prison” were released into the Sea of Okhotsk. Before release, they took samples and put satellite tags, according to which VNIRO staff will monitor the movement of animals. ⠀ All three killer whales were ready immediately after release to go far into the sea. The animals were prepared with a mesh “paddock”, but it was not needed; they were released through the crate immediately into the open sea. We watched from the shore, as three killer whales synchronously described circles near the shore, emerged and plunged into the water. That was incredible! ⠀ In the following days, the institute’s staff will especially carefully monitor the killer whale movement in order to understand where they are going. Let us hope that VNIRO and its subsequent releases of the remaining killer whales and belugas will also conduct it openly and harmoniously. - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B09hOe4gizK/?igshid=uesuxc1xp9od

*Long sigh*
Alright guys. I’m here with an angry post about this. Please bear with me.
Tumblr media
[x] This is a map of the Columbia Watershed. The Snake River is highlighted in yellow, the Columbia in blue.
Tumblr media
[x] This is a map of the dams on the Columbia and the Snake. Bonneville, The Dalles, John Day, and McNary are on the Columbia. Ice Harbor, Lower Monumental, Little Goose, and Lower Granite are on the Snake.
On February 6, 2021, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) proposed a " $33 billion infrastructure and community investment strategy that would breach the four lower Snake River dams and reorder much of the fish, energy and commodity transportation systems of the Pacific Northwest.”
[x]
Good news, right?
Yeah, it’s great news until you get to the part about the time frame.
“If turned into legislation, passed and implemented according to Simpson’s timeline, Lower Granite Dam would be breached in the summer of 2030 and the river that was swallowed by slackwater 55 years earlier would reemerge. The breaching of Little Goose, Lower Monumental and Ice Harbor dams would follow and the entire stretch of the river would return to its free-flowing state by 2031.“ That’s NINE YEARS. 9. N-I-N-E. The Southern Residents can barely find enough food now. There’s no way they’ll last 9 years and still be an even barely viable population (not that they’re a strong, viable population at the moment anyways).
Lets go over everyone who died from 2010-2020. 10 years, approximately how many years it will be for the river to be free flowing.

Twenty-nine dead. Sixteen of these deaths were under the age of 40. Twelve were males, two were unknown genders, fifteen were females.
Now, lets look at the births that survived within that same time frame (2010-2020).
J58 (Crescent), Gender unknown, born to J41 (Eclipse), her second calf, September, 2020
J57 (Phoenix), Male, born to J35 (Tahlequah), her third calf, September, 2020

L118 (Jade) Female born to L55 (Nugget), her fourth calf, January, 2011

L115 (Mystic) Male born to L47 (Marina), her third calf, August, 2010
K43 (Saturna) Female born to K12 (Sequim), her third calf, February, 2010
J47 (Notch) Male born to J35 (Tahlequah), her first calf, January, 2010
Eighteen were born and survived (to this point when I’m posting this- February 10, 2021). Eleven are males, two are unknown genders, five are females.
Now, we’ve lost 15 females over the course of 10 years and have only gained FIVE in that same time period.
Now that we’ve looked at the births and deaths, lets look at the current living population, shall we?
J pod has 10 adult females, (2 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 2 adult males; 8 young males; 1 unknown gender.
K pod has 7 adult females (2 post-reproductive); 1 young female; 7 adult males; 2 young males.
L pod has 15 adult females (5 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 6 adult males; 9 young males; 1 unknown gender.
Total Males: 15 adult, 18 juvenile
Total Females: 23 reproductive, 9 post reproductive, 7 juvenile
Total Unknown Genders: 2
Now, that may seem like a good number of females, but we have to keep in mind that they need to produce healthy, living, viable, FEMALE calves to keep this population growing. While all calves are loved and cherished in this population, we need more females. This population is on a downhill trend that can NOT LAST NINE YEARS WITHOUT ENOUGH FOOD.  “When the whales starve, their pregnancies fail. Southern Resident females used to give birth once every five years, just like females in other killer whale populations. But their average birth frequency has dropped to about once every ten years.“ [x]
For anyone who still might not be getting the picture, here. I have a picture for you. This is the population census that the Center for Whale Research updates on December 31 and July 1 each year.
Tumblr media
[x] Do you see the trend? It’s falling. This population was decimated by the capture era (1960s-1970s) and is now continuing to struggle FIFTY YEARS LATER.
Another point: Reducing whale watching will NOT HELP. Whale watching companies help keep recreational boaters away from the whales and help inform them on the laws. They also report sightings and help keep population tabs. If a whale isn’t looking good, they can report that. If they didn’t see a whale for multiple encounters in a row and the CWR hasn’t been able to get out with them, they can let CWR know. This is a community effort, tracking and monitoring the SRKW. Whale Watch boats also ensure that, when Sound Watch (which mostly operates off the West side of San Juan Island) is not around, that local recreational boaters follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines and keep their distance from the Southern Residents.
“The Southern Residents pulled through the shooting era and pulled through the capture era, but if Ken is right, they will not pull through the conservation era. They are long-lived animals, so they will still be here—yet they will be gone...“We’re at the point—we’re past the point—of no return.”“ [x]
I appreciate Rep. Mike Simpson’s efforts to try to breach the Lower Snake River Dams, but the time to act is now. We are watching extinction happen before our very eyes. Breach the dams in 2021! NO FISH, NO BLACKFISH! “What will we lose if we let the Southern Residents go extinct?” “Our minds.” [x]

So while I was looking through the Southern Resident Killer Whale family tree, I realized you can see very clear gaps where calves should have been born in the 60′s. Obviously these gaps were caused by the captures but for some reason being able to clearly see which mothers most likely had calves taken from them hit me really hard, so I compiled a list of the female orcas that had gaps in their family tree and a little bit about their family
J pod
J2 Granny (No 100% known calves, likely had them though)
J5 Saratoga (Mother of J17 Princess Angeline, aunt of J22 Oreo)
J7 Sucia (Original matriarch of the J16s)
J8 Spieden (No recorded calves, likely taken in the captures)
J12 Sissy (Potentially lost 2 calves, one being J24. Mother of J14 Samish)
K pod
K4 Morgan (Mother of K12 Sequim, her only recorded calf)
K8 Tumwater (Original matriarch of the K14s)
K11 Georgia (Mother of K13 Skagit, her only recorded calf)
K18 Kiska (Mother of K21 Cappuccino, the only member left of her pod)
L pod
L3 Oreana (Grandmother of L84 Nyssa, the only member left of her pod)
L4 Sonar (Had 12 grandkids from her 4 recorded calves)
L9 Hopi (Mother of L3 Oreana)
L12 Alexis (Grandmother of L41 Mega)
L21 Ankh (Original matriarch of the L47s)
L25 Ocean Sun (Potentially lost 2 calves, one being Lolita. Only member left)
L28 Misky (Mother of L85 Mystery, the only member left of her pod)
L35 Victoria (Mother of L54 Ino, very likely lost 1 or more calves to captivity)
L37 Kimo (Grandmother of L72 Racer, likely lost a calf in the Penn Cove captures)
We know for sure that 26 young members of the SRKW population were taken as well as others that it is unsure whether they were SRKWs. Around 13 known SRKWs died in the captures including mothers trying to get to their calves. It is very evident in K pod that mothers died during the captures as there were very few breeding females at the time that the study of the SRKWs started, yet there were quite a few members of K pod taken into captivity.
My next post will be about those whales who were taken captive and from what pod they were from (if it was known)

An unfortunate loss of three(!) orcas to the Southern Resident Killer Whales population just tells us how much our voice matters in this dire situation.. Speak Up! We must educate the public on these whales and bring to light thier daily struggles. These whales need Chinook Salmon and now. Inform governor Jay Inslee! - Rest In Peace: • J17 “Princess Angeline” (F1977-2019) • K25 “Scoter” (M1991-2019) • L84 “Nyssa” (M1990-2019) - 🐳: J56 (F2019) 📸: Hyazu Via @jkl_srkw https://www.instagram.com/p/B1O7zfPizDu/?igshid=ts3c8d438qk8

L84 Nyssa  1990-2019 L84 Nyssa. Adult male Nyssa was the only living member of the family group, the L9s, at the time of his death . He was often seen traveling with L-54 Ino and her offspring. On August 7, 2019, the Center for Whale Research declared Nyssa as Deceased.
