USAF selects Northrop Grumman for SiAW missile development for F-35

Northrop Grumman announced on September 25 that it received a contract of approximately $705 million from the U.S. Air Force to supply the Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) missile, which will equip the F-35 fighters.
In the first phase of the development of the Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) missile project, the U.S. Air Force awarded $2 million contracts to three companies: Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and L3Harris Technologies.
This initial phase lasted three months, during which each company demonstrated its missile capabilities using a digital acquisition approach that prioritized agility and innovation.

After selecting Northrop Grumman for Phase 2, the development program will maintain the U.S. Air Force's dedication to an initiative to acquire large intermediate-level weapons, with a focus on digital engineering, open weapon system architecture and agility, the company said.
The objective of the Air Force is to achieve initial operational capacity by 2026, with Phase 2 comprising two main components: Phase 2.1, concluding with a guided vehicle flight test, and Phase 2.2, covering three additional flight tests along with the delivery of SiAW missile prototypes and associated test means.

"Northrop Grumman's SiAW meets the desire of the U.S. Air Force for its first digital weapons acquisition and development program. With our specialized digital engineering capabilities, this next-generation missile represents an adaptable and affordable way for the Department of Defense to buy and modernize weapons,” said Susan Bruce, vice president of advanced weapons at Northrop Grumman.
The SiAW program aimed to develop a missile capable of allowing the Joint Strike Fighter and potentially other aircraft in the USAF fleet to engage on anti-access and area denial mobile platforms, with potential targets covering air defense systems, missile launchers, GPS blockers and anti-satellite systems. According to budget documents, the U.S. Air Force intends to allocate $1.9 billion for investments in SiAW by 2027.

Ukrainian military pilots are performing tasks that are not even technically provided by their aircraft and operating using modern tactics.
Ukrainian pilot Vadym 'Karaya' Voroshylov, in an interview with Ukrainska Pravda, emphasized that the F-16, which is one of the most mass-produced combat aircraft in the world, is very necessary at this stage. Ukraine will be able to receive this jet and, thanks to its Western partners, will not suffer a lack of ammunition.

"A lot can be said, but I will only say that we are performing tasks that technically were not foreseen even in the design phase of our aircraft," said pilot Vadym. "Taking advantage, the enemy operates according to the tactical and weapons training manuals. We operate using more modern methods that are not presented in any of the textbooks in any country in the world. Western-type fighters will help us fully develop our potential."
He added that Ukrainian pilots have very limited technical capabilities, but try to work efficiently in severe conditions. Voroshylov also agreed with the statement that NATO pilots will have something to learn from Ukrainians after the war.

"We can, of course, consider different types, for example, Gripen, Eurofighter [cas manufactured and used in European military forces]. They are more resistant to our aerodrome infrastructure, but despite everything, there is, let's say, no 'secondary market' for such aircraft in the world," Vadym added. "If you consider the time after the victory, there is a lot to choose from. Of course, there are aircraft that, I would say, are almost perfect in terms of combat capability. These are F-22s, F-35s. But at the moment, it is the F-16 that will greatly improve the situation and help our defense forces on many levels."
Vadym Voroshylov is a 28-year-old military pilot and one of the best Ukrainian fighter pilots. On October 12, Vadym destroyed 5 Russian drones in Vinnytsia and ejected it, taking the fighter away from populated areas to avoid civilian casualties. After Vadym's heroic feat, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy granted him the title of Hero of Ukraine, and the locals nicknamed the pilot "Ghost of Vinnytsia".

One of the reasons for the delay in the transfer of Western fighters to Ukraine is the long-term training of Ukrainian pilots accustomed to working on Soviet-type aircraft. The U.S. House of Representatives approved funding for the training of Ukrainian pilots in American fighters, allocating $100 million for this purpose.
Previously, the Ukrainian Air Force has chosen a group of pilots who can start training in modern foreign fighters, and it is now up to Western partners to decide on the types of aircraft that can be supplied to Ukraine.
