The clouds rolls in in the early evening, draw a shining golden curtain across the mountains. It's warm outside, a heavy sort of heat stirred only by the breezes that draw closer with the coming rain. They whisper in the cattails and the tall prairie grasses; farther off, the white crowns of still-blooming Queen Anne's lace bob and sway.
You step outside, to the edge of the porch boards, and sit down with your feet dug into the short, green grass of the lawn. This close to the edge it's prickly with weeds: thistles and bindweed vying for space among the pea gravel. It's soft all the same under your feet, against the blisters and hot spots your shoes brought up yesterday—old shoes, shoes you haven't worn since the last time you were home, shoes your feet are no longer used to fitting into.
The rain creeps towards you slowly, silvery in the slanting sunlight. Already you can see the glints of the first drops in the air, the shimmer where they catch in the grass.
Slowly, one at a time and then with gathering speed and frequency, the drops begin to land on your bare forearms and upturned face. They're cold, bright points against your skin, and as the breeze begins to feel more like a wind you begin, just slightly, to shiver.
The drops come heavier now; three at a time, seven, eleven. They They tumble against your closed eyelids, begin to soak through the cotton of your shirt. Around you the wind and the rush of rain in tossed grass is all there is; the afternoon is bright behind your eyes. You sit still in the midst of it, at once present and very far away. Some ancient instinct at the back of your mind longs for a real storm, the rolling growls of thunder over the foothills that you remember from your youth.
This rain is simple—no thunder, no storm, just the draw of the dark clouds overhead and the clear of the sun in the middle of them. It won't last—they never do, here—so you savor the feel of it, the presence in your skin, until the drops begin to slow and you blink to open your eyes.
The lawn glitters, sun caught in rain caught in grass that is still green even this late in the summer. You look down at your arms, your hands (yours, yours, this is your body, your skin) and see that they're glittering just the same, raindrops hanging in fine-gold hairs. Around you, the boards of the porch are speckled dark.
The rain has passed, drawn on above you and out over the plains, and you slowly come back to yourself. When no new drops land on your skin, you stand and, with a last longing look at the shimmer of rain over the plains, turn your back and step back inside.

note: this title has also been published in at least 28 other languages. for almost every language, the title is either completely the same or a transliteration of Cinder. occasionally, it is that language's name for Cinderella (i.e. the Russian Золушка, Vietnamese Lọ Lem). the Traditional Chinese and Thai translations call it "Robot/Mechanical Cinderella" (機器灰姑娘; ซินเดอเรลล่าจักรกล). only the Simplified Chinese and German translations use completely different names: 暗月之影 ("Dark Moon Shadow"); Wie Monde so silbern ("As Moons So Silver").
